The Cocktail Party - a comedy

Faber and Faber, London., 1950. First edition, first state. Octavo. 171 pages. A three-act verse play. One Appendix.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: ''Inscribed for Gerald and Mary Graham by T.S. Eliot''. She writes in her capacity as editor of Eliot's letters and asks about the correspondence Graham had with Eliot. She mentions that the first volume is ready to go to Fabers. It was eventually issued in 1988. There is also an intriguing reference to ''your black beauty's poem annotated by Tom, but is she still around to take offence? I am afraid that in today's climate the humourless might consider it racist. Oh dear!''Top edge spotted. Free endpapers tanned and a bit spotted. Very good in good, rubbed, chipped and torn dustwrapper darkened at the spine.

        I, Robot

Gnome Press, Inc., New York 1950 - First edition, wrappered issue, or possibly second printing (see additional information below). Pages browned, two small chips to the wrappers, a very good or a little better copy. One of reportedly 2500 copies (we have also heard the figure of just 200 copies from another source, which seems to be discredited) of the first edition sheets bound up by the publisher in wrappers duplicating the dustjacket art. The intention and publication history of this variant is disputed: it was done either as an "Armed Services Edition" or as a short-lived experiment in paperback publishing. The publisher also issued three other titles thusly, but quickly abandoned the project. One source asserts that these were reprinted in 1951 from the original printing plates (retaining the first edition statement). At any rate this is far rarer than the hardcover issue of the first edition. Basis, or more properly the inspiration, for the 2004 film directed by Alex Proyas and featuring Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, and Alan Tudyk. A rarity, the fragility of the construction assured that few of the copies survived. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Simon and Schuster, New York 1950 - Quarto (10 1/4 x 7"). 144pp. Original photo-illustrated wrappers with white lettering to covers and spine. Title page inscribed and signed by Robert Capa: "To Rona, hoping that he won't have to pay for my Paris hotel bills again. Capa." the inscription refers to Capa's early years in Paris, at a time when he didn't have enough money to pay for his hotel rooms. At one point, the manager of the hotel he stayed at confiscated his shoes, thus Rona had to bail him out (Whelan, 1994.) Rona was also a Hungarian émigré who owned the ABC Press photo agency in Amsterdam, which represented photographers like Capa or László Moholy-Nagy, later the Magnum Photos in The Netherlands. This book serves as a photo-document of the then newly founded state of Israel, capturing the already diverse cultural, sociological and physical landscape. By the time this work was published, Robert Capa was already an acclaimed war photographer, photojournalist and one of the founders of Magnum Photos. Subjects ranging from politicians and military leaders, to new immigrants, farmers and the Ultra-orthodox community are featured. Irwin Shaw's text provides relevant and informative information to accompany and give context to the stunning b&w photographs taken by Capa. Wrappers rubbed along joints and edges. Head of spine chipped. Wrappers in overall good-, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
