Three accordion-style oblong folio albums (355 x 230 mm.), containing 114 finely colored nihonga-style drawings of Japanese desserts on washi paper, by Eisen (Osamu) Kato, a prominent Kyoto artist, each with his seal (in two versions) stamped in the blank portion of image, various sizes (153 x 230 mm. to 127 x 180 mm.), mounted in the albums

Ca. 1950-59. A magnificent collection of 114 original drawings of regional traditional Japanese desserts, most of them manufactured for tea ceremonies, by Eisen Kato. Kato, born to a samurai family, was a well-known Kyoto artist most famous for his portraits. He received important portrait commissions of prominent people and several of these works are now in the Kyoto National Museum. He was the disciple of Bairei Kono (1844-95), the famous painter, book illustrator, and art teacher at Kyoto. Kato was commissioned, amongst other important projects, to ornament the Seigen Temple near Kyoto and to provide paintings to the Higashi Hongan Temple in Kyoto. The first volume contains the most finished illustrations - 56 in all - of the desserts and are all executed on mica-impregnated washi paper. Each contains Kato's notes regarding the name of the sweet, name of the maker and location, and a stamp with the artist's name. Many of these companies are still manufacturing these sweets. The other two volumes contain another 58 slightly less-finished drawings of desserts on regular washi paper. Each of these contain Kato's notes, again in his hand, describing each confectionary product, its name, and the manufacturer's name and place. All the illustrations bear an illegible stamp but we believe it to be another version of Kato's chop. The illustrations in all the volumes are highly detailed and richly colored. Japanese desserts (wagashi), so disappointing to some Western palates, are one of the glories of the Japanese table. These albums can be dated by the mention on one of the illustrations of Crown Prince Akihito's wedding which took place in 1959. Preserved in a very elegant wooden box.

Pict cloth, 8¼x10¾, 48p, DW ($2.00), some chips. A ginger cat and a red-haired boy become friends after a series of parallel adventures in this superb union of story and image. Publishing the book was a brave act in an America terrorized by Senator Joe McCarthy. We all saw on televison every day the hearings in Washington that destroyed careers and lives of people we knew. It was a really bad time, in retrospect, worse than today. Congress passed laws to restrict civil liberties in the name of security. The Cincinnati Reds baseball team changed their name to the Redlegs. Many bookstores refused to sell the book and a large display (set up by the (set up by the young window dresser, Maurice Sendak) had to be removed from F.A.O.         Likero-Vodochniye Izdeliya. [Wine and Liquor Products]

N.p.: Ministerstvo Pishevoy Promishlennocti, 1950. Octavo-sized, accordion fold (25 x 18 cm.), [24] pages. Illustrated with seventeen color plates by C.B. Popov. First edition. A trade catalogue of Russian liquors, issued by the Russian Ministry of Food. The spirits are of all types, with a wide range of vodkas, but also a rich variety of cordials, brandies and dessert liqueurs. The handsome color plates all stand out for their single color backgrounds, and the printing process would appear to have been a hybrid combining photolithography and lithography and then colored. Whatever one makes of the Soviet cultural landscape in general, it did attain high standards in some fields, and in a modest way, this trade catalogue is a proud reflection of its aesthetic achievement. Clean and bright within. Textured wrappers with debossed copper lettering and gilt ruling; lightly soiled and with wear and some separation at spine. Good. [OCLC locates no copies].

Autograph Album of Julia C. Mack of Garnet-Patterson Junior High School

Washington, DC: Garnet-Patterson Junior High School. 1950. Oblong 12mo. Blue cloth over padded boards with name of the school printed in silver, with zipper closure along the edges of the boards. Zipper is partly detached, boards are rubbed and worn, internally near fine, overall about very good. Partially printed autograph album with title page and frontispiece pictures of the school and the principal, with blank leaves for autographs and black leaves for photographs. Ownership signature of Julia C. Mack dated at the end of the 1950 school year. Most of the leaves have been autographed with sentiments, all over the course of three or four days in June, and many embellished by Mack with what look like small yearbook-type photographs, and which seem to confirm that the students were almost all (or perhaps were all) African-Americans, and with indications of who each student was - her boyfriend, her best friends, basketball players, etc. Several of the students have also indicated what high school they were bound for - most often Dunbar High School or Cardozo Senior High School (Mack went to Dunbar). Additionally the album is signed by several faculty members, and near the end the album contains the autograph of jazz legend Louis Armstrong: "To Julia, Ol' Satchmo, Louis Armstrong." The black album pages at the end contain other yearbook-type printed images. A nice little slice-of-life illuminating the school years of a young black teenager. .
