Dipole Transitions in the Nuclear Photo-Effect" [Bethe & Levinger, pp. 115-129] WITH "Identity in Quantum Electrodynamics" [Ward, p. 182] in The Physical Review, Vol. 78, No. 2, April 15, 1950

American Physical Society, Lancaster 1950 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF TWO PAPERS OF SIGNIFICANCE TO THE THEORY OF THE ATOMIC NUCLEUS AND ELEMENTARY PARTICLES: Bethe and Levinger's sum rule calculations demonstrated the total integrated photonuclear cross section, an important quantity demonstrating that the giant resonance, a "high-frequency collective excitation of atomic nuclei", is caused, in the main, by absorption of electric dipole radiation" (Wikipedia). John Clive Ward's introduction of the 'Ward Identity' (or 'Ward's Identities'), now known as the Ward-Takahashi Identity. "Low lying giant dipole resonance provided the first evidence of a strong nuclear photoeffect, with an integrated cross section of the order of one classical sum rule, scaled by the ratio of the nucleon to the electron mass with respect to the atomic case" (Christillin, Nuclear Photoreactions, 1). The theoretical interpretation of this was first given in 1948 by Goldhaber and Teller. Two years later, Bethe and Levinger "apply sum rules to calculate under certain approximations the integrated cross section and the mean energy for photon absorption by heavy nuclei" (Abstract, Physical Review 78, 1950, p. 115). Attributed to the onset of the electric dipole absorption, the sum rule they developed is independent of any particular model of the nucleus. Significantly, Bethe and Levinger realized "that an important modification to the electric dipole sum rule with respect to the atomic case was due to the presence of exchange potentials in nuclear physics" (Christillin, 2). John Clive Ward was a British-Australian theoretical physicist whose contributions helped shape the post-war quantum era particularly with regard to particle physics and renormalization theory. In his second published paper, Ward, on the heals of work by Dyson, wrote about "the equivalence of the quantum electrodynamics theories of Feynman, Schwinger, and Tomonaga (Duarte, The Man Behind an Identity in Quantum Electrodynamics, AP 46, 6, 2009). "The Ward Identities have their origin in a 1950 paper [the paper offered] published in Physical Review. This was a succinct master piece authored by J. C. Ward? Building on previous work by Dyson this elegant letter proved in seven steps one of the most important and celebrated results of renormalization theory. In a following paper, published in 1951, Ward extended the initial result to a set of identities. Today, the Ward Identity or Ward Identities, are standard teachings in theoretical physics and continue to be the focus of considerable research activity. Some four thousand journal physics papers have been published with Ward Identity or Ward Identities either in their titles or abstracts" (Duarte, Optics Journal Portal, Tunable Lasers).         Archive of over 45 Photographs from the Collection of Harold Colee, Long-time VP of the Florida State Chamber of Commerce

Jacksonville: Original, 1950. Original Photograph. Folder. Very Good. Nearly all of the photographs are ORIGINAL 8X10 B/W shots. Nice archive of 47 photographs and one TLS (on Atlantic Coast Line stationery) from the private collection of Harold Wilfred Colee. Colee was the long-time Vice-President of the Florida State Chamber of Commerce. As his position with the organization demanded, Colee traveled Florida and the United States in an effort to entice both more business relocations to Florida as well as push existing businesses to expand within the boundaries of the state. Colee was active in Florida commercial real estate as well as having been important to Industrial relations in the state. Many of the photographs included in the archive document advertising or promotional events for the State of Florida. At least three of the photographs feature Governor Millard Fillmore Caldwell. Other photographs in the collection include: The signing of the Freedom Scroll, the Chamber building in Jacksonville, the opening of the Harry Anna Memorial Crippled Children's Hospital, the 1952 Annual Convention of the Society of Industrial Realtors (in Miami) and a shot of Colee with the visiting Italian Ambassador circa 1950. A few of the photographs are signed. Overall, a nice assemblage of photographs documenting mid 20th Century Florida Industrial expansion. It was exactly this sort of activity that stirred Walt Disney to visit as well as start acquiring land in Florida in the early 1960's. Condition - Each of the photographs shows a bit of wear, some more than others. Condition overall is graded at Very Good. A few of the photographs are stamped and/or identified on the verso. All photographs are B/W.

Original unpublished typescript: Bird's Nest Caves & Other Limestone Caves in North Borneo

n.p., n.d., 1950. Quarto typescript, approx. 60 pages, with an 8-page legal-size mimeograph insert, and a 10-page legal size carbon insert, both by H. G. Keith, and both signed by him ink; and a 2-page quarto insert in pencil citing references; also with 40 original black & white photographs; all in a 3-ring binder. Also included are 4 related offprints by Chasen, 1931-33, former curator of the Raffles Museum and a noted expert on the bird's nest caves of Borneo. At the back of the notebook are reports by G. S. Brown on the birds' nest of Berhala Island, and 2 reports on the Mandagawan Cave and its coffins, a number of which were found there, some dating back as far as the 14th century. An interesting study of the famous bird's nest caves (the birds are swifts, by the way) of North Borneo, with a series of striking photographs of the caves, the harvesting and native harvesters of the birds' nests, and the harvesters' dwellings. The photographs are largely 6¼" x 4¼" and are mounted in slits (i.e. removeable); 6 photographs are smaller and pasted in and several others are larger. "In 1931 the curator of the Raffles Museum in Singapore, F. N. Chasen, prepared a report for the North Borneo government on the birds' nest caves in the territory [a copy of which is among the offprints]. He argued that creating forest preserves were an important way of isolating the caves from human disturbance. He believed that the birds' nest industry could be exploited further, benefiting both collectors and the government who charged a tax on the trade in nests. Using Chasen's report to support his case, Keith was able to reserve 45,000 acres of forest specifically for the protection of the swifts' habitat. Preserving the forests near the birds' caves also allowed the nest collectors easy access to bamboo and rattan canes used for scaffolding to access the birds' nests" (N. Martland). The caves at Madai, Mantanani, and Gomantong are famous as a source for swiftlets' nests used in bird's nest soup. For more than 400 years, bird's nest soup has been one of the most expensive foods in the world, and even today a single bowl costs between $30 and $100, quality depending. Bird's nest soup can only use the edible nest of the cave swiftlet, a nest made entirely from the birds' saliva. Twice a year (between February and April, and between July and September), licensed collectors risk their lives climbing to the roof of these caves using only rattan ladders, ropes, and bamboo poles. It is a special festival event for the local Idahan villagers, who have held the rights to the caves for over 20 generations. The present cache of material in this composite notebook is Keith's own report on the reserve and the bird's nest caves, together with related materials. In 1925 he was appointed the Assistant Curator of Forests for the government of North Borneo (now Sabah, Malayasian Borneo) under the Chartered Company, based at Sandakan, and was promoted to Conservator of Forests in 1931, and later to Director of Agriculture and Wildlife. He was also Honorary Curator of the Sandakan Museum. Keith was concerned with the economic importance of non-timber forests in North Borneo, including the edible birds' nests. These nests are produced from the saliva of several species of swifts and swallows that nest in the limestone caves found throughout Borneo, and elsewhere in maritime Sourtheast Asia. The nests are prized by the Chinese, both in China and in the communities of the Chinese diaspora, for their culinary and medicinal uses. Singapore and Hong Kong are still main centers of trade in birds' nests. Keith's views and work, often in conflict with the logging companies' interests and not always appreciated by the India Office in London, showed the benefits of enlightened forest management practices in a colonial environment. The offprints included are: Chasen. Report on the Birds' Nest Caves and Industry of British North Borneo, with Special Reference to the Gomantong Caves. Jesselton, North Borneo, 1931. Signed by Kieth. Chasen. On Bats from the Limestone Caves for North Borneo. Singapore: Raffles Museum, 1931. Chasen & C. Boden Kloss. On a Collection of Mammals from the Lowlands and Islands of North Borneo. Singapore: Raffles Museum, 1931. Chasen. Notes on Bornean Mammals. Singapore: Raffles Museum, 1933.

Papermaking by Hand in America

Colored frontis. and over 150 tipped-in illus., facsimiles of paper specimens and ream wrappers, & photographic illus. Large folio, orig. cloth-backed decorated paper boards, printed paper label on spine. Chillicothe: Mountain House Press, 1950.Limited to 210 (?, see below) numbered copies, signed by Hunter who, for this book, made his own paper, type, and ink, and set all the type himself. "The most authoritative history of early American papermaking is Dard Hunter's sumptuous, large folio Papermaking by Hand in America, a tour de force on one-man bookmaking, set by the author in a handcut type and hand-printed on handmade paper manufactured at the author's own mill…Hunter spared no expense to record and evoke the paper mills of the preindustrial era."-Bidwell, "Paper as evidence, artefact, and commodity" in The Book Encompassed. Studies in Twentieth-Century Bibliography (1992, ed. by Peter Davison), pp. 75-76.A fine copy preserved in a red morocco-backed box. Bookplate of Haven O'More.❧ Schlosser 41-"The last work of the Mountain House Press and the author's magnum opus, this book provides a history of American papermaking by listing and describing the first paper mill in each state from 1690 until 1811, six years prior to the introduction of the first paper machine into the United States. There are in the book 123 facsimiles of documents and watermarks and forty-two reproductions of labels used by these early paper manufacturers. The thick folio volume was to have been issued in an edition of 210 copies, but the author's own bibliography says that only 180 were completed. The book is printed on Dard Hunter's paper.".

Autograph Album of Julia C. Mack of Garnet-Patterson Junior High School

Garnet-Patterson Junior High School, Washington, DC 1950 - Oblong 12mo. Blue cloth over padded boards with name of the school printed in silver, with zipper closure along the edges of the boards. Zipper is partly detached, boards are rubbed and worn, internally near fine, overall about very good. Partially printed autograph album with title page and frontispiece pictures of the school and the principal, with blank leaves for autographs and black leaves for photographs. Ownership signature of Julia C. Mack dated at the end of the 1950 school year. Most of the leaves have been autographed with sentiments, all over the course of three or four days in June, and many embellished by Mack with what look like small yearbook-type photographs, and which seem to confirm that the students were almost all (or perhaps were all) African-Americans, and with indications of who each student was - her boyfriend, her best friends, basketball players, etc. Several of the students have also indicated what high school they were bound for - most often Dunbar High School or Cardozo Senior High School (Mack went to Dunbar). Additionally the album is signed by several faculty members, and near the end the album contains the autograph of jazz legend Louis Armstrong: "To Julia, Ol' Satchmo, Louis Armstrong." The black album pages at the end contain other yearbook-type printed images. A nice little slice-of-life illuminating the school years of a young black teenager.

        A HORNBOOK FOR WITCHES.

Arkham House 1950 - Another of those "handful" of truly elusive issuances from Arkham House/Mycroft & Moran, although the colophon states 553 copies, aparently the authoress took half the edition back to her hometown of Evansville and distributed copies amongst her friends and acquaintances! Hence only a few hundred were offered thru Arkham House. A Fine fresh copy that bears a Hannes Bok designed bookplate of Harold C. Worden, and the tidily written number in ink, "K126." D.j., just the merest trace of age at spine—barely noticible. A lovely example. A listing from the Richard M. Jefts complete Arkham House collection. #RMJ15. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Poems: 1950.

The Cleaner's Press, Galveston, Texas., 1950. First edition. First issue in reddish boards with pale blue title labels on front and spine. Octavo. pp [x], 55. One of 1000 copies. The author's second book. The poems include Sonatas, Odes, Overdrafts, Chomei at Toyama etc. The five-page Preface by Dallam Flynn, which Bunting greatly disliked, is missing from most copies. Most of the sheets were sold to another company, who subsequently issued the book in wrappers without the Preface. On the front free endpaper is a gift inscription by Omar Pound, Ezra's son and a great friend of Bunting's: "To: J.F. Fearnley. April. 1953. Omar S. Pound".Tail of spine slightly rubbed. Very good indeed. No dustwrapper, but it is by no means certain that all copies were issued with one. Scarce.
