After being threatened with imprisonment by the Nazis in 1933 for his satirical cartoons, Schleifer and his wife fled to New York in 1934, where he resumed his career. Schleifer became a United States citizen in 1940 and changed his name to William Sharp.

Original prospectus and other advertising material laid in. Publisher's vellum gilt [vols. 1 and 2], publisher's vellum-backed boards [vol. 3]. Vol. 3 with publisher's plain dust wrapper. Publisher's board slipcases. A fine facsimile of the Book of Kells: one of 400 numbered copies, this copy number 149. The first two volumes, which constitute the facsimile, were strictly limited to 400 copies, according to the prospectus laid in; the third text volume was limited to 500 copies. The prospectus reads: "A reproduction of the entire manuscript in facsimile -- a task never before attempted -- is now in hand and is here offered for subscription ... The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript on vellum, containing the four Gospels in Latin. Its date has yet to be precisely determined; some writers have placed it as early as the sixth century, others as late as the end of the ninth century. The Book of Kells has been in the possession of Trinity College, Dublin, since the year 1661. Its text has been classed as Vulgate by some experts, but it differs so widely from the accepted Vulgate that perhaps it should be viewed rather as an Irish variant of the 'mixed' or 'old Latin' text. Some of the variant readings are of peculiar interest. The glory of the Book of Kells is the amazing beauty and infinite variety of its illumination and ornament. For grandeur of conception and delicacy of execution several of its illuminated pages merit the term sublime. Taken as a whole the Book of Kells is a supremely beautiful document, surpassing all other works of the kind, and by far the finest example of early Christian art in Ireland ... Complete as issued. German-French sculptor, painter and poet. Jean Arp (also called Hans Arp) was born in Alsace and studied at the Strasbourg School of Arts and Crafts, at Weimar (1905-7) and the Academie Julian, Paris (1908). In 1912 he went to Munich where he knew Kandinsky and exhibited semi-figurative drawings at the second Blaue Reiter exhibition in 1912, and 1913 he exhibited with the Expressionists at the first Hebrstsalon (Autumn Salon) in Berlin. Aware of the developments within the French avant-garde through his contacts with such figures as Apollinaire, Max Jacob and Robert Delaunay in 1914, Arp exhibited his first abstracts and paper cutouts in Zurich in 1915, and began making shallow wooden reliefs and compositions of string nailed to canvas. In 1916 he was a founder member of Dada in Zurich, he participated in the Berlin Dada exhibition of 1920, and in 1923 he visited Schwitters in Hanover. In Paris, Arp began to evolve his personal style of abstract compositions through an organic morphology, frequently sensuous in form, and began to experiment with automatic composition (automatism). In 1925, he participated in the first Surrealist exhibition in Paris, before breaking with Surrealism to become a founder member of Abstraction-Creation in 1931, when his characteristic organic forms became more severe and geometrical. At a time when he began to turn towards full 3-D sculptures, Arp insisted that his sculpture was 'concrete' rather than 'abstract', since it occupied space, and that art was a natural generation of form: 'a fruit that grows in man', as he put it.A dominant personality within Dada, Surrealism and abstract art, his reliefs and sculptures had a decisive influence upon the evolution of 20th Century Art." - Bullfinch.         Box of Textile Swatches

      New York: Knoll Associates, Inc. This is a very good cardboard container with 332 textile samples produced by Knoll during the late 1950's. The box itself, like other Knoll advertising and promotional work from this period, was designed by Herbert Matter. The design is a geometric pattern in blue, black and white (see photograph). The box is in reasonable condition: the top of the box shows the colorful design clearly and has just a few tiny abrasions. The sides are also printed with the same blue, black and white pattern. There are various small defects to the edges and corners, which are rubbed, or show wear. Also at some time there was tape was used to secure the sides to the bottom of the box, these applications have left some residue to the sides. The textile samples themselves are all in very good condition. The individual white printed cards with the Knoll logo and "320 Park Avenue" address, each have swatches of original textiles stapled to them. The cards do not identify the individual designers, but carry the name of the textile design, its' Knoll number, the fiber it is made of, the size of the roll it is produced in, and the finish. A wide range of textile designs is represented in this collection. The colors include solids and plaids, and more complex weaves. The variety of colors includes blacks, grays, tans, beiges, cream-colors, sand, yellows, greens, blues, reds and purples. The box bears the title "Textile Swatches" and the company name "Knoll Associates, Inc." and was most probably issued to retailers of Knoll products to help customers select fabrics for their Knoll furniture. This is a unique and invaluable resource for an institution or perhaps even a collector. The box is 11.5" square X 3.5" high. Call or write for more details and photographs. . Very Good.

        The Town and the City [Inscribed to the Mother of "Tim Gray"]

      NY: Harcourt Brace. (1950). His first book, a novel published seven years before On the Road and the only book Kerouac published using his given name, John, rather than the more casual "Jack" under which his Beat novels were published. Inscribed by Kerouac in the year of publication to the mother of his friend Ed White ("Tim Gray" in On the Road): "To Mrs. White -- The wonderful mother of my wonderful friend/ Thanks for everything, and the most gracious hospitality in your home/ From yr. admirer and absorbéd guest/ Jack Kerouac/ June 4, '50/ Denver." A notable association copy: Ed White was, in some ways, Kerouac's best friend, according to Speer Morgan, who edited for publication the correspondence between the two. They exchanged letters from 1947 to 1969, the year Kerouac died. White was reportedly the first person Jack wrote to when The Town and the City was accepted for publication, and he is credited by Kerouac as being one of his most important and formative literary influences by virtue of his suggestion that Kerouac carry around a notebook and "sketch words" as they occurred to him, encouraging him to take a more spontaneous approach to writing than before, and not treat it as a laborious effort to achieve a "literary" effect. By following White's advice, Kerouac virtually re-invented American fiction, or at least opened up a new range of possibilities, giving it the kind of free form and flow that he had associated with jazz music. Front flyleaf excised (inscription on next blank); small bump at lower board edge; a few spots to top stain; else a very near fine copy in a very near fine dust jacket with just trace rubbing at the extremities. Illustrated with twelve color lithographs by John Buckland Wright, all but one of them full-page. A presentation inscription on the front blank dated September, 1958 reads, "To Anne & Georg, a story of the seas -- your loving Aunt Marie." Princess Marie Bonaparte was the great-grandniece of Napoleon I of France and an amateur psychoanalyst, who maintained a friendship with Sigmund Freud. She married Prince George of Greece and Denmark, and the inscription is probably to her cousins-by-marriage, Prince Georg Valdemar of Denmark and Iceland, and his wife, Anne. Bound in lime-green vellum with an image of a mermaid in gilt on the front cover and gilt titling to spine. Some sunning to spine and edges of front cover, else a fine copy of a handsome book. A delightful image of Shepard's childhood, which originally appeared in his autobiography, Drawn from Memory (1957), and was later reproduced only once, on page twenty-seven of The Work of E.H. Shepard by Rawle Knox (1979). Found on page thirty-three of Drawn from Memory, it is captioned, "My little fingers never seemed to be in the right place." "Once a week we all three of us [siblings] had a music lesson. We had violins of different sizes and were taught by Mr. Cruft... It was dreadfully tedious having to play scales and my fingers never seemed to be in the right places, but it was better when I was promoted to Boccherini's Minuet. First edition, first printing of the first title in the Narnia chronicles, illustrated by PAULINE BAYNES with colorplate frontis plus numerous full page and smaller black & whites. This is a lovely copy of a book in high demand.

        Diary of Erika Walbrun: Original Manuscript Diary covering the Bombing of Berlin by a Teenage Girl; Archive of Related Material

      n.p.: n.p., 1950. Handwritten diary/album approximately 6 by 8 inches, 180 pages, with pasted in photographs and watercolor paintings by the author. Erika was born in 1929, making her about 16 when Dresden fell in 1945. The diary was completed in 1950. It starts with pictures of Erika's parents, her childhood, and schooling. Around page 70 it starts to speak of the war years in Dresden where she lived with her parents and grandmother. By page 85 she discusses the latter days of the war in detail: She had to clean rubble from air attacks on Dresden; her mother had a miscarriage; she had to work among refugees as a red cross volunteer. Starting February 13, 1945, she describes in detail the bombing of Dresden. She watched the cathedral collapse form her window. She describes the dead lying in the streets, the low-flying aircraft shooting people trying to flee. "Don't get buried alive: that's all I could think of." The next day they started to walk to Bavaria and safety. She describes her journey and happenings along the way. The later parts of the diary describe happier, postwar times. With pictures, letters and clippings laid-in. Together with another journal captioned 'Dresden", undated. Only the first 30pp are written in, along with pictures and original sketches of Dresden landmarks. The diary ends abruptly with the note that on the night of February 13/14, 1945, Dresden was bombed. Photographs, clippings and memorial cards are laid in as well. together with a 3rd journal dated 1951 with photographs and descriptions, also with letters and cards laid in. All in German with only a bit of English at the end; all in very good condition.

Seven volumes complete, published between 1950-1956, comprising, "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe", (1950), 172pp, [2]; "Prince Caspian", (1951), 194pp, [2]; "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", (1952), 223pp, [1]; "The Silver Chair", (1953), 217pp, [1]; "The Horse and His Boy", (1954), 199pp, [1]; "The Magician's Nephew", (1955), 183pp, [1] and "The Last Battle", (1956), 184pp. Original cloth / buckram in DJ's. DJ's often with small tears and nicks, Lion Witch has a couple of small tears to upper panel, but no real loss, the Voyage of the Dawn Treader being the worst, with splits to the backstrip and chipping to the corners, Silver Chair and Prince Caspian are chipped to spine ends with small amounts of loss, remaining three slightly rubbed but no loss or tears. The books are generally fairly bright and clean, Lion Witch has the usual 'ghosting' to the spine, Dawn Treader spine is browned (as often). Lion Witch and Dawn Treader have a previous owners name to endpaper and reverse of frontispiece respectively, Last Battle has small numbers in pen next to the list of titles on the reverse of the half-title. A decent set. Hooper A20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 27 and 29 respectively. First Edition. Hardback. Very Good/Good. Illus. by Baynes, Pauline. 8vo.

A lovely first printing of the book, in Near Fine condition with a minor bump to one corner and foxing along the outer edge of the page block and at the end papers. In a vibrant dust jacket, easily Very Good+, with hardly any toning to the spine panel. Jacket with minor wear at spine ends and corners and minor foxing, mostly at the rear panel and along flap edges. This copy SIGNED by Asimov directly on the rear end paper. A book that is typically seen with the spine faded to grey. & & The author's second work, a collection of nine interwoven stories dealing with a futuristic world where humans and robots interact on a daily basis. Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics" first appear in this book, creating a framework that would be used in all of his robot fiction, how a robot interprets those laws becoming a driving mechanism for many of the works. Adapted for several television and film programs, the most famous, "I, Robot" starring Will Smith was loosely based on themes from the book and Asimov's "Three Laws."
