Benedikt was a German Jew who fled first to France, and then England before the war, along with Elias Canetti with whom she had both a personal and professional relationship.         Ethiopian-Coptic Orthodox Anaphora

      Ethiopia: Manuscript of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church Complete with 40 text and 4 hand-painted icons (St. George, Madonna and Child, Crucifixion, and Jesus Arisen) on 44 parchment pages. Typical binding with crude leather over wood boards; covered spine. Pages are bound in two gatherings of 2 icon leaves, one gathering of 8 leaves, and two gatherings of 6 leaves. Text is in red and black and written in Ge'ez, a no-longer-spoken Semetic language that is still used for liturgical purposes. One of the fourteen different Coptic anaphoras. Until the 19th century these anaphoras (often referred to as "Bibles" but really liturgical prayer books) were produced only as hand-painted manuscripts by individual clergymen for use within their parishes. It wasn't until 1950 when Emperor Hailie Selassie decreed they would be printed in both Ge'ez and Amharic that all of the works were finally published. It is almost impossible to date these liturgies as they remained unchanged over many centuries. (See "The Liturgy of the Ethiopian Church," translated by Rev Marcos Doud.) This text and the icons were probably painted in the 1800s and perhaps rebound near the beginning of the 20th century. Quite attractive with expected wear. Scarce.. Leather. Inscribed by Eliot to Margot Coker on the title page: "Inscribed for / Margot Coker / by T. S. Eliot [rule] / Bicester House July 20, 1951." In addition to the inscription, Eliot crossed out the titles Essays Ancient and Modern and After Strange Gods on the preceding page. Further inscribed with Eliot's notes on page 29 in regard to the first issue misprint, which Eliot corrected by crossing out the second "e" in "here": "T. S. E. / (coquette found / only in a / small no. of / copies of the / first printing, / and never / explained)." Publisher's light green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; original gray dust jacket. About near fine, with light wear to the extremities, toning to the spine, a hint of faint spotting to the end papers, former owner Margot Coker's inscription "Margaret R. Coker [rule] / 1950 [rule]" to the front free endpaper, bright and clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with wear and minor chipping to the extremities, a few short tears to the edges, some toning to the spine. An attractive copy, rich with association. Margot Coker was the last living resident of the Coker family estate at Bicester House in Oxfordshire, where the Coker family had resided since 1582. Prior to living in Bicester House, the Coker family lived in the village of Coker in Somerset not too far from Eliot's ancestral home in East Coker. Known for her relatively transcendental lifestyle and generous hospitality, Margot Coker housed many visitors, including Eliot. He wrote at least one of the poems in Four Quartets while staying with the Coker family, and the title "East Coker" from the same set underscores the location's significance to Eliot. First performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1949, The Cocktail Party is the most popular of Eliot's seven plays. Partially based on Euripides' play Alcestis from Ancient Greece, The Cocktail Party tells of a squabbling married couple who resolve their issues with the help of a stranger. In his typical fashion, Eliot uses absurdist elements to make larger philosophical statements about human interaction and relationships.. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. An original copy of Faulkner's famous "Beer Broadside" containing four arguments for legalizing the sale of beer in Oxford. The Beer Broadside was Faulkner's direct challenge to an earlier broadside distributed by a group of clergy calling for the sale of beer to remain illegal. Contains the blemish to "because" in point 1. According to Petersen, there were likely two impressions of the broadside, the first without the blemish to "because" and the second with the blemish. Others have suggested a single impression, with the blemish merely due to type batter that might have occurred during the print run. "Tey, Josephine" aka "Daviot, Gordon" pseudonyms of Elizabeth Mackintosh (1896-1952), Scottish Golden Age mystery writer, literary author, and successful playwright best known for her small but brilliant oeuvre which included the creation of Scotland Yard Inspector Alan Grant and her classic detective novels: THE MAN IN THE QUEUE (1927), A SHILLING FOR CANDLES (1936), MISS PYM DISPOSES (1947), THE FRANCHISE AFFAIR (1948), BRAT FARRAR (1949), and THE DAUGHTER OF TIME (1951, voted greatest mystery novel of all time by the British Crime Writer's Association in 1990; The Franchise Affair was 11th on that same list). EXCEEDINGLY RARE HANDWRITTEN LETTER (Signed "Gordon"), 2pp, over 200 words entirely in her holograph,(20 Cavendish Square, London W1, n.d. but October, 1950) in black ink on small plain notepaper, one corner just slightly torn with no loss of text , folded at one time, but otherwise in Very Good condition. TO HER PUBLISHER Nicholas "Nico" Davies (of the firm Peter Davies Ltd., which published most of her Tey mystery novels). A HIGHLY DESIRABLE and exceeding uncommon HANDWRITTEN LETTER from the reclusive author, containing information on her working methods as well as a description of her personal feelings re: the difference between how she views herself as an author versus as a playwright. It reads, in part: "When he [a fan] first wrote to me about The Franchise Affair he began: ' Dear Josephine (almost certainly Miss!) Tey' - and being no feminist I took that as a compliment." "In police matters I go to the horse's mouth (the local Chief Constable) and abide by what [he] says." "And he misread the bit about the doctor who did not know his patient was a woman: of course the doctor knew as soon as the woman was dead". "It was so nice to see you both again. I always enjoy my Davies luncheons." "P.S. It is a very strange thing but I got more kick on seeing Tey in the middle of the 'Times' [Times Book Club] window than in seeing my name in front of the New [Theatre]. Age, I suppose." [With:]Two letters from Nico Davies, signed, to a fellow publisher, both written a few short years after the author's passing. The first letter reads in part: "Nearly all our letters from Josephine Tey were typewritten and I am pretty sure what you really want to see is her writing, so I have pulled out from our files a letter written in October 1950. She is talking about of one of the many letters she received from a Tey fan and mentions, as you see, THE FRANCHISE AFFAIR. I think the two most interesting things in the letter are a hint of her methods in the third paragraph; and a nice P.S. in which she compares her feelings at seeing copies of the latest Josephine Tey book on display in the Times Book Club with seeing the name of Gordon Daviot in lights outside the New Theatre where her RICHARD OF BORDEAUX ran for many months. (You know of course that Josephine Tey and Gordon Daviot were the same person: she always signed her letters to us - and was called by us---Gordon. Her real name was Elizabeth Mackintosh.) I hope you will be pleased with this "Tey" gem." The second letter from Nico Davies gives a complete list of all her publications, some insider info on Tey publication matters, and imparts this useful fact vis a vis the scarcity of her works: "Apart from her plays. Collection of 16 black-and-white portrait photographs by Carl Van Vechten, printed on card stock, many as postcards, all but three with his blindstamp to the lower portion. Six of the photos contain the subjects' names in holograph ink on the verso, two of which are also dated, with a seventh photo was used as a postcard, with a franked stamp and a holograph notation by Van Vechten, dated March 21, 1959, on the verso. After switching from writing to photography in the 1930s, Van Vechten became one the leading photographers of the era, taking portraits of many actors, artists, writers, and musicians. Among his hundreds of subjects were Thornton Wilder (with "in The Skin of Your Teeth" on the verso, in character as Mr. Antrobus), Ruth Ford (in a dress by Pierre Balmain), Tallulah Bankhead, Carol Channing, architect Philip Johnson, impresario/art connoisseur Lincoln Kirstein, and potter Grace Barnsley (here under her married name, Emily Davies, and dated "Paris, 1930"), all present in this collection. Van Vechten was also interested in African-American music and literature, and was an early supporter of the Harlem Renaissance. This collection includes four photos of Ethel Waters as Hagar from 1939 Broadway premiere of "Mamba's Daughters," and photos of choreographer/actor/dancer Geoffrey Holder, Harry Belafonte, actress/singer Bertice Reading, and writer Owen Dodson, who has briefly inscribed his photo on the recto.         Typescript Draft of "The Window"

      [c. late 1940s]. Bradbury's ten page signed typescript draft of his short story "The Window," which was first published in Collier's on August 5, 1950 and then revised again for publication as a chapter of his 1957 novel Dandelion Wine. Inscribed by Bradbury to his longtime friend and later publisher, Roy A. Squires: "For Roy - Remembering about thirteen years of memories, friendship, and various associations - with my best wishes always from Ray Bradbury." Twelve leaves; double-spaced; with one title page and one blank page for ten total pages of text. With Bradbury's annotations and emendations: multiple word changes, a running tabulation of word count, and the cutting of text to bring the count from 2179 to 1749 words (as totaled by Bradbury on the title page). The largest single cut is the opening 1-1/2 page section, in which Bradbury describes a nightmare in which a man has come to disconnect the telephone, which is the elderly protagonist's lifeline to his youth in Mexico City (a place Bradbury had visited in 1945). In the published version, the sequence is replaced by a description of the man waking abruptly and commenting "I don't like that dream." Another two dozen or so sentences were excised from this draft by Bradbury (and further changes were made between this amended draft and publication). One hole punched to pages in the upper corner; paper clip shadow at upper edge; near fine or better. Bradbury was the author of the classics Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man: his first book was a collection of stories, Dark Carnival, published in 1947. By the time of his death in 2012, he was one of the most honored American writers of all time, winning a World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement, and lifetime or Grand Master awards from the Science Fiction Writers of America, the Horror Writers Association and the Science Fiction Poetry Association, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, a special citation from the Pulitzer Board, and the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation, to name a few. An early version of one of Bradbury's earliest stories, with a substantial amount of unpublished material still visible. .

There is unlikely to be a better set anywhere.David Brower, Chairman of the Sierra Club Editorial Board, describes, in his "Preface to the Second Printing", the reasons and process behind this rare set: "The five volumes of the Sierra Club Bulletin completed before 1906 have long been out of print and exceedingly difficult to obtain; the type, the plates, manuscripts and photographs, the overrun, and many individuals' files were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and fire. Spurred on, perhaps, by Ronald Clark's pleasant description of the Bulletin in The Splendid Hills, where he speaks of it as "that model of all mountain periodicals," the Sierra Club has brought the early volumes back into print, thus enabling important libraries, whether individual or institutional, to complete their files of turn-of-the-century description of exploration and conservation in the Sierra Nevada. Reproduction of these volumes is by photo-offset, and the text remains exactly as it was. The trim size of the first two numbers has been increased so that they will conform with the rest of the series; some of the line drawings are reduced in size to eliminate tip-ins; the plates are rescreened and assembled as signatures; and some advertisements are omitted - reluctantly - to keep the volumes of uniform size.       1950. ROSS,MARGARET. MR. BADGER'S SUCCESSFUL PLAN - 13 WATERCOLORS & MORE. Offered here are 13 wonderful watercolors used to illustrate Ross's book published by the Museum Press in 1945. Ross was an extremely successful author / illustrator in the 1940's and 1950's. In her books she created a world of humanized animals. Apart from her books, her illustrations were also available separately in a series of color prints. In Mr. Badger's Successful Plan shes has created a world of humanized animals much like Graham'e Wind In The Willows: Mr. Badger prevents disaster from occurring at Mrs. Brown Mouses's birthday party saving Whisker Fox and Rascal Rat from an intruding dog and its owner. Offered here are 13 original watercolors used in the book. Each piece is on paper 10 inches wide by 7 1/2 inches high. Each page is completely filled with color illustraions detailing the lives of a variety of humanized animals. Included with the art is a copy of the book that is signed by Ross with her address. It is also inscribed by her in an elderly hand reading "My dear / With love for Christmas / Margaret Ross/ (I was 30 years too late! / The last copy, please forgive." Also included are 3 pieces of ephemera relating to her book and two typed letters heavily corrected in Ross's hand, each with a charming pen drawing.

Drafted by Robert Ardrey. Never produced. Before Ardrey returned to academia for a respected career in anthropology, he was a noted screenwriter and playwright. His credits include Madame Bovary, The Three Muskateers, and Four Horsemen of the Apocaylpse among many others. This screenplay is undated, but likely written in the 1950&#39;s. Very good condition, Sheets brad-bound into thick paper covers.

        Six Watercolor and Gouache Drawings of Underground Paris Drinking Clubs in the Early 1950s

      1950. Color watercolor and gouache illustrations on textured paper. 8.5" x 9.75". Overall near fine with some light wear and scattered light creasing, with one image subtly rubbed at a few places. Vignettes of couples in various stages of inebriation, dancing, and flirting, with dogs and mice in each illustration. The dogs, either French poodles or schnauzers, are (variously) lifting their leg, up at the bar drinking the cocktails through a straw, or dealing with the mice. The walls of the club are covered in graffiti and cobwebs. The graffiti spoofs Existentialism and Bebop culture. One club is called "La Rose Noire [Cafe Existentialiste]" with the band called "l'Ensemble Be-Bop." The cartoon is entitled "La Nausee" referencing Sartre, with the clubgoers looking hungover. Another is entitled "Indigenes de St. Germain de Pres," with two beboppers at the bar. Other graffiti is playful: "Alcool Tue Lentement [Alcohol Kills Slowly]." "Vive Sartre et le Coca Cola" is crossed out, with "vendu aux U.S.A. [Sold to the U.S.A.]" underneath. Other graphics include hearts with girls' names, nude women, and a gallows. Apparently the work of the mysterious artist, Tabou & Cie, with each work titled and numbered on the verso. A charming and vibrant collection of humorous French illustrations. .

        [Oil Painting]: Fishes

      Oil painting on laminated panel. Approximately 26 x 20.5cm. (10" x 8"). Unframed. Signed in the lower left. Slight rubbing at the edges of the boards, near fine. Old (circa 1950?) label on back from Mortimer Levitt Gallery in Manhattan stating price at $75 (later lower to $65). Partly representational, partly abstract depiction of a school of fish rendered in a heavy impasto style. According to the website of Riverside Community College, which holds her papers: "Mine Okubo was born in Riverside, California, on June 27, 1912, to immigrant Japanese parents. She attended Riverside Junior College, (now Riverside City College), and subsequently obtained a bachelor's degree in fine arts as well as a master's degree from the University of California, Berkeley. She won a fellowship in 1938 to study art in Europe, and returned to the United States just before the outbreak of World War II. She was employed doing public art projects through the federal WPA in the San Francisco area, and worked with Mexican muralist Diego Rivera for the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay. She was working on a mural when war with Japan was declared. She and her brother were incarcerated briefly at Tanforan Relocation Camp and subsequently transferred to the Central Utah Relocation Camp in Topaz, Utah. While in the camp, Mine Okubo taught art and did numerous pen and ink drawings depicting life in the relocation center, which later provided the material for Citizen 13660. She entered a magazine contest with a drawing of a camp guard, and Fortune magazine, recognizing her talent, offered her a job in New York that led to her release from the camp. With some help, she found an apartment in Greenwich Village where she would live for the next 50 years, vigorously participating in the New York art scene and creating works of art that were exhibited from Boston to Tokyo. Her book, Citizen 13660, published in 1946, was the first account of the wartime Japanese American relocation and confinement experience, and is regarded as a landmark work." Okubo died in 2001 at age 88. .
