"Road Floozie" was banned in England and Darcy Glinto, pioneer of British hardboiled fiction, was arrested, pled guilty and paid his 100 pound fine - thereby sealing "Road Floozie's" fate as a cult favorite. "Road Floozie's" history and marvelous vintage cover art has generated its own key ring and postcard industry. Retro enamel "Road Floozie" key ring bears great looking reproduction of the cover and we thought book buyer would enjoy receiving it as a gift. Square/Tight/Clean but for a few small pencilled numbers @ top right corner of first free page; top corner of p. 61 shows small crease. The road floozie on front cover looks great w/ some ageing traits on background (visible in scan); edge bump next to "E"; slight lift of upper right corner & about first 20 pgs; light stress line across "Grim" & just below "Truths" (these are visible in scan). Both volumes ingeniously slipcased in one box. Each is copy #39 of 1500, and each is SIGNED by the designer with his initials. One of the more imaginatively designed books of the press.         The Land of Little Rain

      Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1950. First printing thus. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 132 pp., square 4to. Austin's classic text, with an introduction by Carl van Doren, and reproductions of 48 photographs by Ansel Adams. Internally about fine, in lightly handled cloth with a touch of fading to the spine. In a supplied dustjacket, price-clipped and with edgewear and small closed tears, but still very good. This copy inscribed on the halftitle by Ansel Adams to Louise Boyd, and dated in the year of publication. Louise Boyd (1887-1982) was an early explorer of Greenland and the Arctic, an author and photographer, and the first woman to fly over the North Pole, among other distinctions. Boyd and Ansel Adams had a long and interesting friendship. The camera that Boyd took on her first expedition in 1926 -- a Kodak Eastman with standard wood construction replaced by aluminum to make it usable in the Arctic -- she later sold to Adams, who used it for many years. In interviews, discussing his equipment, Adams speaks of that camera and an aerial camera that he also purchased from Boyd; both received extensive use and are responsible for numerous iconic images. Incredibly, Gordon Fountain (who was with Byrd on the second expedition to Antarctica) relates in a 1996 interview that Boyd wrangled Adams into photographing her furniture for insurance purposes! Adams: And then I sold the Folmer view camera and got Miss Louise Boyd's Kodak eight by ten camera, which was of aluminum, made on the same pattern as the wooden view camera. Silliest piece of engineering. I still have it, but it's just ridiculous to look at. But it worked beautifully. . . . Adams: Then I have also Louise Boyd's aero camera, the five by seven Fairchild camera that she used in her exploration of Greenland, which is a rather extraordinary outfit. She got some very interesting stuff with it. It's big and as heavy as sin, you know. Teiser: How did you happen to have her camera? Adams: Oh, we've known her for a long time and she was disposing of her equipment. I sold quite a few things for her some very elaborate navigation instruments. These things went rather cheap. They were not worth much financially, but now they have historic value. And a set of optical glass filters that are hard to come by now. Grade A glass, about 1/2 inch thick. Absolutely flat plane. (from Bancroft Library Regional Oral History project) BS: Louise Boyd. You were a friend of Louise's? GF: Oh yeah. I've got a couple of her books. And Marjorie had quite a bit to do with her in her later days when she was in hard times and in a bad way physically. She was in a rest home for a while and Marge used to go up and see that she ate her lunch and things like that. In fact, we had some photographs and stuff from Louise. Let's see. What's the name of the photographer that took Louise's furniture pictures? MF: Ansel Adams. GF: Yeah, Ansel Adams. MF: Nobody else but Louise would have got Ansel Adams. GF: Yeah, he took pictures of all her furniture for insurance purposes. She hired him or talked him into it. I don't whether she paid him or not. MF: She talked him into it. Stated First edition book with the scarce original stunning near fine dust jacket. Only 5,000 copies of the first edition were printed of this iconic title in which Asimov's "Three Laws of Robotics" were postulated for the first time. The book is in beautiful condition with crisp red boards, with a black robot emblem to front, and black titles to spine. The boards are clean and a vibrant red still maintaining their original sheen. The book has sharp corners with no edgewear. The binding is tight and square. One small corner bump. The end papers are clean, with one tiny splash mark to the corner, otherwise no inscriptions, no bookplates, and no bookstore stamps. The internal pages are clean and bright with No marks, No stains, No writing, No handling marks, and No foxing. A beautiful clean, fresh example of this landmark title! The original first edition dust jacket is in stunning condition having benefited from some very slight restoration to the spine tips by an expert paper conservator and presents as a near fine example. The jacket is bright with vibrant colors and without the usual fading to the spine (the red tones are most often found faded to a grey). The stunning dust jacket has No rips, No chips, No edgewear, No stains, No rubbing and No foxing. Even the white rear panel and flaps are still a bright white without any age toning! Original pressbook for the 1950 film noir, "No Man of Her Own," directed by Mitchell Leisen, based on the 1948 novel "I Married a Dead Man" by Cornell Woolrich writing as William Irish. Written for the screen by Sally Benson and Catherine Turney, and starring Barbara Stanwyck, John Lund, and Lyle Bettger. A pregnant woman (Barbara Stanwyck), on the run from her gangster boyfriend (Lyle Bettger), assumes a new identity when the train she is on crashes and the newlywed couple sitting next to her are killed. 12 pages, saddle stitched, 12 1/4 x 15 inches. In a strong Very Good plus condition. Faint horizontal fold crease at the center of the wrapper and pages. Wrappers are lightly soiled with a few small, scattered stress marks. Tiniest hints of separation to the top and bottom of hinge fold. "Fervent, suspenseful woman's noir that actually seems to elevate its Woolrich source material." Selby 285. Silver and Ward, p. 395.

Lacks the dust jacket as is often the case with this book which was used by a generation of engineers as a standard reference. An important book by Shockley who, with Bardeen and Brattain, co-invented the transistor and were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956 ''for their researches on semiconductors and their discovery of the transistor effect''.

An excellent copy in the rubbed and nicked jacket with tanned spine panel which is split cleanly down the upper fold and repaired with tape to the verso. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For my friends Dr. and Mrs. "Tex" Burnett, from an "ole Lincolnite" – Langston. New York, November 27, 1950". With the original typed mailing label from Hughes to Burnett loosely inserted. "Lincolnite" refers to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, where Hughes earned his undergraduate degree in 1929 before returning to live in Harlem.

      Los Angeles: Paramount, 1950. Original pressbook for the classic 1950 film noir, "The File on Thelma Jordon," directed by Robert Siodmak, based on the story by Mary Holland. Written for the screen by Keeti Frings, and starring Barbara Stanwyck, Wendell Corey, and Richard Rober. An Assistant DA (Wendell Corey) is drawn into a conspiracy of robbery and murder by a mysterious woman (Barbara Stanwyck). 20 pages, saddle stitched, 12 1/4 x 15 inches. The pressbook and all promotional material and advertising samples contained within refer to the film by the alternate title "Thelma Jordon." Very Good plus condition. Moderate horizontal fold crease at the center of the wrapper and pages. Hinge is worn with tiny creases but lacking any of the separation common to pressbooks. Wrappers slightly edgeworn with some light rubbing overall. A dark and morally conflicted film by Siodmak, here at the top of his considerable directorial skills, and a powerful performance by Stanwyck, who invests Thelma with more ambiguity and sympathy than is found in the stereotypical femme fatale. Quelques piqûres marginales en bord d' un ou deux feuillets, à peine visibles. L'un des 185 exemplaires numérotés sur B.F.K. de Rives. Ravissant illustré bien peu fréquent malgré le tirage relativement copieux (totalisant 265 exemplaires toutes catégories confondues), oscillant entre imagerie naïve et sobriété japonaise du plus pur zen évoquant les estampes traditionnelles. Nous ne connaissions jusqu'alors que le petit livre de Cendrars ymagé par cet artiste "L'Eubage.", paru au Sans Pareil un quart de siècle plus tôt. Et, depuis, nous savons aussi qu'il fit paraître deux portefeuilles de suites de burins, "Paris" et "Croquis d'animaux" dans les années 30, tout à fait admirables - venez juger de visu !.Un contrepoint en noir de la version couleur qu'en donna notre graveur Robert Hainard quatre ans auparavant pour l'éditeur Gonin à Lausanne, également visible à notre céleste officine comme dit un vieux (et aimable) fidèle.

        Two-Page HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM JOSEPHINE TEY TO HER PUBLISHER

      London, 1950. "Tey, Josephine" aka "Daviot, Gordon" pseudonyms of Elizabeth Mackintosh (1896-1952), Scottish Golden Age mystery writer, literary author, and successful playwright best known for her small but brilliant oeuvre which included the creation of Scotland Yard Inspector Alan Grant and her classic detective novels: THE MAN IN THE QUEUE (1927), A SHILLING FOR CANDLES (1936), MISS PYM DISPOSES (1947), THE FRANCHISE AFFAIR (1948), BRAT FARRAR (1949), and THE DAUGHTER OF TIME (1951, voted greatest mystery novel of all time by the British Crime Writer's Association in 1990; The Franchise Affair was 11th on that same list). EXCEEDINGLY RARE HANDWRITTEN LETTER (Signed "Gordon"), 2pp, over 200 words entirely in her holograph,(20 Cavendish Square, London W1, n.d. but October, 1950) in black ink on small plain notepaper, one corner just slightly torn with no loss of text , folded at one time, but otherwise in Very Good condition. TO HER PUBLISHER Nicholas "Nico" Davies (of the firm Peter Davies Ltd., which published most of her Tey mystery novels). A HIGHLY DESIRABLE and exceeding uncommon HANDWRITTEN LETTER from the reclusive author, containing information on her working methods as well as a description of her personal feelings re: the difference between how she views herself as an author versus as a playwright. It reads, in part: "When he [a fan] first wrote to me about The Franchise Affair he began: ' Dear Josephine (almost certainly Miss!) Tey' - and being no feminist I took that as a compliment." "In police matters I go to the horse's mouth (the local Chief Constable) and abide by what [he] says." "And he misread the bit about the doctor who did not know his patient was a woman: of course the doctor knew as soon as the woman was dead". "It was so nice to see you both again. I always enjoy my Davies luncheons." "P.S. It is a very strange thing but I got more kick on seeing Tey in the middle of the 'Times' [Times Book Club] window than in seeing my name in front of the New [Theatre]. Age, I suppose." [With:]Two letters from Nico Davies, signed, to a fellow publisher, both written a few short years after the author's passing. The first letter reads in part: "Nearly all our letters from Josephine Tey were typewritten and I am pretty sure what you really want to see is her writing, so I have pulled out from our files a letter written in October 1950. She is talking about of one of the many letters she received from a Tey fan and mentions, as you see, THE FRANCHISE AFFAIR. I think the two most interesting things in the letter are a hint of her methods in the third paragraph; and a nice P.S. in which she compares her feelings at seeing copies of the latest Josephine Tey book on display in the Times Book Club with seeing the name of Gordon Daviot in lights outside the New Theatre where her RICHARD OF BORDEAUX ran for many months. (You know of course that Josephine Tey and Gordon Daviot were the same person: she always signed her letters to us - and was called by us---Gordon. Her real name was Elizabeth Mackintosh.) I hope you will be pleased with this "Tey" gem." The second letter from Nico Davies gives a complete list of all her publications, some insider info on Tey publication matters, and imparts this useful fact vis a vis the scarcity of her works: "Apart from her plays. Two small (largest approximately 0.25" X 0.5") chips to upper edge of wrapper, not affecting images or text. Two slightly larger (largest approximately 2" X 0.5") chips to edges rear wrapper. Interally clean. The Gorey illustration is bright and unfaded. This issue of the Harvard Advocate marks the first published illustration of Edward Gorey, the American illustrator and author famed for his striking, macabre style. The cover illustration features two dapper men tossing sticks at smiling heads mounted on pikes. Gorey's first book, the Unstrung Harp, did not appear until three years after this illustration. This authoritative text and bibliography on the French “Game of the Goose” and its derivatives is illustrated throughout with images relating to the game, including many whimsical geese. The plates are printed across two-page spreads, showing examples of game boards. The “Game of the Goose” is a circular race game similar to “Snakes and Ladders” with its origins in sixteenth-century Italy. The game was very popular and quickly evolved from a gambling game played by adults in taverns to a form of family entertainment. Bound in paper-covered boards printed with the design of a game board, the edges and corners of which show some discoloration and wear; else fine, with some uncut pages.

A very good copy with some very minor spotting to the inner half of the title and half title pages. Previous owners neat 2 line inscription on the front blank endpaper, otherwsie a very good, bright and clean copy throughout. Publishers green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Some areas of fading, mostly to the spine and light 'ghosting' of the illustration of Mr. Tumnus from the spine of the dustwrapper. In the publishers original first edition dustwrapper, with original price (8s, 6d Net) on inner front flap. Rear inner flap is blank except for the very small publishers printed code (APT S537) at the bottom. The wrapper has had some expert professional restoration but only to the plain grey paper, mostly just at the very edges. All of the lettering and the illustrations are original. Overall a very nice copy that shows extremely well. The first book in the Narnia series.

First English edition. Featuring original illustrated dustwrapper. The essay is considered a seminal piece of literary criticism. Although Chandler's primary topic is the art (and failings) of detective fiction, he touches on general literature and modern society as well. Chandler had an immense stylistic influence on American popular literature, and is considered by many to be a founder, along with Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain and other Black Mask writers, of the hard-boiled school of detective fiction. Condition: In original publishers' cloth binding, andoriginal unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, cloth is sound, with only some very gentle rubbing. Dustwrapper is bright, although with chipping and rubbing to extremities. Some light marks to the rear.       Paris: Acanthe Gallery , 1950 This is a very good set of two packs of playing cards and a carrying case for them + a prospectus. There is a folded sheet of heavy green card stock:a "Prospectus" in very good condition with just a slight crease to front and back not affecting the two original cards tipped-onto the front of the Prospectus which show an example of the face card and its obverse (the patterned side of the card). Inside there is one double-page tipped-in text in French discussing Surrealism, games of chance and the work of Leonor Fini. Original clamshell box with 2 compartments for 2 decks of cards and slipcase cover. Printed paper title label: Leonor Fini - Jeux de Cartes. Each one of the face cards of each suit: Jack, Queen, King and a Joker have fanciful designs of men and women on them, the colors still very bold and bright. All designs typical of Fini's work of this period. The cards have all gilt edges. One pack has a purple "sponge" patterned back, and the other has the same type pattern in green. Light soiling to spine of box and to slip case. Small stain to corner of slip case, splits to head and tail. Overall in very good condition, with all cards very clean, no marks or creases. Both decks are complete. Bibliographical reference: Uwe-Volker Segreth, Spielkarten, Jugendstil und Art Deco. Edition Christian Brandstetter, 1994. pg 152-53 for reproductions of face cards, and also an important note concerning the number of cards per deck issued in this edition. It states 52 cards + 1 Joker per deck. Box is 5.5" high X 3.5" wide X 1" thick. Prospectus is 4to size, 11" high X 8" wide. A beautiful set. . Very Good.
