The Town and The City

New York, NY: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. This is the first edition of the first published novel by John Kerouac, before he became known to the world as Jack with the release of On the Road seven years later. Written in a relatively conventional style heavily influenced by Thomas Wolfe, it nevertheless fictionally recounts his adventures with the small group of disaffected, searching young people who formed the nucleus of the Beat Generation. William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Herbert Huncke & himself among others are represented with fictional names. The seeds of what later would later become notorious, then popular, & finally legendary are to be found amidst this sweeping family epic based on his family & life up to this point, still in his twenties. A superb highlight among our offerings, and an essential component of any serious Kerouac collection. In exceptionally fine condition, increasingly rare, among those we have encountered. Book fine, with only very slight rubbing to lower corners of rich-red cloth covers & spine, very light browning to edges & margins of pages, a few very tiny spottings to rear end paper, some scratching & a very shallow horizontal gauge at dark-colored top edge, & a feint curved vertical mark across lower edge near & parallel with spine that may be a remainder mark (the book did not initially sell very well in its first edition). Dust jacket in near fine condition, much better than usual, with mild rubbing & soiling to front, back covers & spine, moderate creasing & chipping at all edges, esp. upper spine-front cover corner & top right corner of front cover, front flap very clean with mild creasing at top edge, esp. right corner, rear flap soiled & sunned at top & right edge, otherwise very clean. All corners of front & back flaps clipped, (probably) as issued. Charters, Ann. Jack Kerouac: A Bibliography, New York, NY: The Phoenix Bookshop, 1975. A1(a.), pg. 15.

A beautiful â??test print photographâ? of Winston Churchill, printed from Philippe Halsmanâ??s famous original portrait

n.p.: , [1950]. Silver gelatin photograph of Winston Churchill by the photographer Philippe Halsman (Russian-American, 1906-1979), featured on the November 2, 1953 cover of LIFE magazine. "First edition" photograph, 8 x 10. Circa 1950. Fine Condition. The former owner explains that the print was found among the remains of a long since closed and neglected studio in a small town in the Midwest. Due to slight imperfections in the processing of the image, the owner believes that the photographer attended one of Halsman's workshops and was given the imperfect "throwaway print" as a gift. The print is not signed, which is typical of test printing.

A Fine set, consisting of eight volumes housed in three matching slipcases. Black spines gilt, with beautifully designed and decorated brown boards. Illustrations by Sidney Paget and others. THE FIRST THREE VOLUMES STILL RETAIN THEIR ORIGINAL GLASSINE DUST JACKETS. Volumes Four and Six have a tiny bit of abrasion to the spine but are otherwise as pristine as all the rest. The three matching slipcases are original and just slightly worn. Unsigned Edition of 1500 copies of which this set is uniformly #239. Heavy water damage to red cloth covered boards, causing mottling and waviness to cloth, bleeding to paste downs and free end papers, on the verso of the dust jacket and just slightly on the side edge of the page block. The cloth looks worse in reality than it does in the photographs, as they did not pick up too much detail. Binding strained at front. Text and pages are clean. The dust jacket shows rubbing, chipping, soiling, light creasing and wear along the folds and edges. The hardcover is fair due to water exposure, though the book on a whole presents somewhat well wrapped in the original dust jacket. First Edition.

        Colonel Crockett

1950 - A striking and lovely image of a central figure in the mythology of the American West. Davy Crockett (1786-1836) remains the archetype of the early American frontiersman: fighting Indians, guiding settlers, and leading cattle. Though tied to the land that he helped to tame, Crockett was an active volunteer in the War of 1812, serving as a scout for General Jackson's army. Later, he became involved in politics and served in the Tennessee state legislature, 1822-1827. Crockett held a seat in Congress from 1827 until 1835, when he joined the movement for Texan Independence, and met his death in 1836 during the heroic defense of the Alamo. John Gadsby Chapman (1808-1889) had met Crockett in the early 1830s and had painted a portrait study. Crockett's death defending the Alamo in 1836 immediately made him a national hero, and Chapman worked up a full-length portrait. This was exhibited in the fall of 1838 at the Apollo Gallery, an exhibition space which had just been founded in New York by a group of artists including Chapman. This painting was acquired for the State of Texas and hung in the State Capitol, where it was later destroyed when a fire consumed the building. Another version was obtained from the artist; this picture now hangs in the Harry Ranson Research Center, University of Texas at Austin. The engraving states that it was published by the Apollo Gallery, New York, in 1839 (though this is a mid-20th century impression from the original plate). This is consistent with the entry in a catalogue issued by the Apollo Gallery in October 1839, which describes an engraved version (number 240). There was an engraver of portraits in mezzotint named Charles Stuart working in New York in 1841, who must be the engraver of this portrait. In the portrait, Crockett stands in his buckskins, looking to his left, his right arm outstretched, holding his broad-brimmed hat. In his left arm he cradles a long rifle, and a knife is tucked into his belt. Three obedient dogs gaze up at him and he stands in a small clearing with a shock of wheat and some trees behind him. The original 1839 version of this print is so rare as to be unobtainable, and is lacking from most major institutional collections. The last we can trace for sale was one offered by the Old Print Shop on the front cover of the Portfolio , in May 1963 for $ 200. (this at a time when the major Audubon prints were still in three figures). Hand-coloured mezzotint, engraved by Charles Stuart. Beautifully printed in the mid-20th century from the original 19th century copper plate, with wide margins, on hand-made paper.

        THE TOWN AND THE CITY

Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York 1950 - A Fine, bright copy of the book with just a few spots on the top-stain, otherwise pristine. In a Fine dust jacket with only the most trivial wear at the extremities and slight browning at the top of the flaps. A book that is rarely found in such lovely shape. A fantastic example of Kerouac's first book. This work was heavily influenced by the writing of Tom Wolfe and intensely edited. The following year Kerouac would write his second novel, "On the Road," marking a dramatic shift in writing style to the quintessential voice of "Beat" literature. An interesting first novel from one of the most important and influential writers to come out of the mid-twentieth century. "In this big, rambling first novel, John Kerouac tells of a Massachusetts family that is gradually dissolved by the recent war, the forces of modern life and the passage of time. a rough diamond of a book." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine in Fine. dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

Fayer,, Wien, 1950 - Wien, Fayer, o. J. [um 1950]. Fotographen-St. a.

Octavo. Original tan paper boards printed in black. With the pictorial dust jacket. With 80 black and white photographs, 10 by Robert Doisneau, and diagrams in the text. Joints split at upper end, some light spotting to boards, front and rear inner hinges starting, endpapers and text leaves slightly tanned. A very good copy in a chipped, rubbed and lightly creased jacket with tape repairs to verso, especially to split spine panel. First edition, first impression, of this mesmerising anthropological study of tattoos in late 1940s Paris. The book's author, the poet, novelist and journalist Robert Giraud (1921–1997), introduced his friend Robert Doisneau to the Parisian underworld as early as 1947. "With him I met people on the edges of society. People who were complete outlaws. Bob loved listening to prostitutes and pimps; I thought they were all rather stupid. Whores telling dirty stories, it wasn't really my thing. But the pseudo distinction of working for Vogue wasn't neither, I'd had enough of that job. All things considered, I was actually getting over my depression as a high society photographer with the energetic help of my friend Giraud!" (Robert Doisneau).
