Each volume is near fine to fine in very good dust jackets. A very nice set, uncommon in this condition. One of the epic works on the Confederate armies, these exhaustively researched and brilliantly written volumes deserve to be read by all Civil War students. Freeman employs an amazing quantity of information, much of it gleaned from Confederate sources in Richmond, and he is an interesting and intelligent writer, offering insights into a multiplicity of actions and personalities. The three hefty volumes cover the period following Sumter to the end of the Peninsular campaign, Second Bull Run to Chancellorsville, and the Gettysburg campaign to war's end" (Eicher 971).

      Heinemann, London 1950 - First edition. Tiny lightened spot on topedge and very slightly cocked, else near fine in near fine dustwrapper with tiny nick and tears at the spine ends. A scarce title, the first printing of Greene's novel, written prior to the screenplay in order to secure permission from Viennese authorities to film on location. Greene, director Carol Reed, and producer David O. Selznick had enjoyed great critical and box-office success with their 1949 film *The Fallen Idol*, based on Greene's story "The Basement Room" and starring Ralph Richardson as a kind butler whom a child believes must be protected from a murder charge. Joined by producer Alexander Korda, Greene, Reed, and Selznick immediately set out to make another film together. *The Third Man*, an inspired classic of film noir, arose from a series of serendipities, from Greene's conversation with a British intelligence officer about Vienna's sprawling sewers and its black-market in penicillin, to Trevor Howard's discovery of zither player Anton Karas outside a restaurant, right down to the final shot, which everyone, including Joseph Cotten during the filming of it, expected to end differently. Supposedly it was the only film Orson Welles made which he bothered to watch when it came on television ("Carol Reed and I have something in common," he once remarked, "We are both awfully patient with me."). Rollo Martins comes to Vienna, a city still controlled by the four occupying powers, expecting a job from his old friend Harry Lime, only to arrive in time for his funeral. Angered by hints of his friend's involvement in the black market rackets and confused about conflicting reports of the hit-and-run accident that killed Lime, Martins decides to conduct his own investigation. The 1949 film, THE THIRD MAN was directed by Carol Reed, with Graham Greene as the screenwriter. The film starred Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton, Trevor Howard, and Alida Valli. The Third Man Theme music was by Anton Karas. THE FALLEN IDOL was also made into a film in 1948, with Carol Reed as director and Graham Greene, Leslie Storm, and William Templeton as screen writers. It was originally published in 1935 using the title of THE BASEMENT ROOM. The title was chosen by the film distributors and is the story of a murder by a somewhat pathetic man who is unwittingly betrayed to the police by a small boy.

      - Freud writes to the long time family housekeeper, Paula Fichtl. In full, "My dear, good Paula, Only yesterday I received your letter of the 5th, the first one came much faster. I am sorry that you are freezing so much, but it does not surprise me. One reason is the different climate the other that we are so spoiled in the evenly heated house. Just walk rigorously to warm you. Sure, vacation in the summer would be quite a different story but who knows if it would have worked out. I feel sincerely with you, that your poor father is miserable. Old age altogether is not good, that I know myself. Here winter hasn't arrived yet. Mr. Green did not come twice, can you imagine? We don't know whether he is ill or whether his fear of not being as well looked after in your absence causes it. Otherwise, everything goes its regular way. I'll be glad, however, when you, well rested, will be back in the house fidgeting about. I shall enjoy the thermometer, but don't spend so much money. We are not that badly off here. Good bye and all the best." She signs, "from your Old Mother Freud." Letters of Martha Freud infrequently come on the market. The Freud family moved to Marsfield Gardens from Vienna to escape the Nazis after the Anschluss in 1938. Martha and Sigmund were married for 53 years.

Near fine in a very good or better unclipped dust jacket, with the jacket showing very slight edgewear, rubbing; a 1/4 inch closed tear to the upper front panel, a spot of soiling to the rear panel at mid fore edge. All in all, however, an uncommonly sharp example, with the added benefit of being signed twice by the poet: once on the first blank, and again on the title page. While a later printing (August 1950, Edelstein A1c2), still a signed copy of what is --in the opinion of many-- the most profoundly influential and accomplished work by an American poet in the latter half of the 20th century. And, as such, really quite scarce.

      1950 - Archive Relating to David O. Selznick and George Cukor on Filming Fitzgerald's "Tender is the Night" with John O'Hara writing the screenplay. 1950-1960. Very good. Items include: 1) Three telegrams from Selznick to Cukor, March 11 and March 18, 1950. 2) Two telegrams from Cukor to David O. Selznick, March 13 and March 18, 1950. 3)A long three page single spaced typed letter (file copy) from David O. Selznick to Cukor May 18, 1960, still trying to get the work brought to the screen with cast including Jennifer Jones, Jane Fonda, and Glenn Ford. The film was finally made in 1962 starring Jennifer Jones and Joan Fontaine. Henry T. Weinstein was the producer (not David O. Selznick); screenplay by Ivan Moffat. See David Thomson's "Showman" p.633 for details on the filming, most of which took place in Zurich. Memos from David O. Selznick continued to fly during the 1960 filming including one of sixty pages, to the screenwriter.

      American poet and Lincoln biographer. A stunning trio of items archivally matted and framed together. First, the scarce broadside "Ever Normal Turmoil," 10½" X 15", printed at San Francisco's famed Peregrine Press in October 1950 in an edition of 200 copies. Very good. Sandburg composed this meditation upon war and peace on July 9, 1944. Alongside this is an appropriate autograph item: a small, unsigned Autograph Quotation in pencil, reading in full: "The first world war came and its / cost was laid on the people. / The second world war -- what will / be its cost and will it repay the / people for what they pay?" Very good. Mild age toning. Next to this is the third item, a scarce large publicity portrait of Sandburg by Robert Buchbinder. Near fine. A tremendous trio, simply and tastefully presented.

Margaret Sullavan, Wendell Corey, Viveca Lindfors, Natalie Wood, John McIntire, Ann Doran, dir: Rudolph Mate; Columbia. The ultimate woman's self sacrifice melodrama with Margaret Sullavan the perfect choice to play such a heroine. This film was the great star actress' swan song to the silver screen. She would appear in just three television dramas during the next few years. The story was about Mary Scott, who is diagnosed with an incurable illness. (The word cancer is actually spoken on screen). She has 10 months to live and wishes to live them to their fullest and take care of the future of her husband (Corey) and 10-year-old daughter (Wood). When she discovers that her husband is having an affair with his secretary (Lindfors), she takes it upon herself to become friends with the woman and ensure that her daughter develops a relationship with her as well. Certainly a great dramatic role for Sullavan, and this is a superb poster portrait of her by the great artist Ballester. Likely the finest Margaret Sullavan poster image of all time.
