Archive of Drafts of Letters and Documents relating to Saroyan's separation and divorce from his wife Carol Marcus, and her affair with cartoonist Al Capp

[New York], 1949-1950 - A Saroyan archive of essential biographical importance. In 1943, Armenian- American author William Saroyan, at the peak of his success and fame, married the 17-year-old socialite Carol Marcus. They had two children, Aram (b. 1943) and Lucy (b. 1946), but by 1949, as this archive painfully documents, the marriage was clearly breaking up. In July 1949, the couple agreed to separate; in September of that year they divorced; and Marcus, as a letter here reveals, began an affair will the cartoonist Al Capp. Eventually, Saroyan and Marcus remarried in 1951, but they quickly divorced again in 1952. This archive contains the following letters and documents relating to the marriage and its break-up: 1. Several typed and carbon drafts of Saroyan's request for annulment of the marriage, with several autograph corrections and insertions by Saroyan. The essential ground of the complaint was Saroyan's assertion that Marcus deceived him as to her origins, and pretended to be the daughter of a Catholic couple from Long Island, of Scottish, and French-Russian descent, rather than the illegitimate daughter of a Jewish mother, as she later admitted. 14 pages in all 2. Carbon copy of the separation agreement of July 1949. 6 pages. 3. Draft Typed Letter signed to Al Capp, Jan. 8, 1950. 3pp., with several autograph corrections. 4. Draft of the same letter. 1 page 5. Another draft of the same letter. 1 page. 6. Carbon copy of the final letter to Capp, Jan 8, 1950. 4 pages. A painful and moving letter to Capp regarding Capp's affair with Marcus, a warning to Capp that Marcus had a psychopathic personality ("she tells lies and believes them, makes false accusations, and lives in a world of fantasy"); and his belief that Capp is "wittingly or unwittingly helping this woman to plunge deeper and deeper into a life of fantasy which must eventually bring her to the urgent need of hospitalization, and to her children terrible suffering and heartache -" Carol Marcus later married the actor Walter Matthau; Aram Saroyan became a writer in his own right; and Lucy Saroyan became an actress 4to. In all, 29 pp. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Miraculous Fish of Domingo Gonzales

W.W. Norton, New York 1950 - First edition. Illustrated by William de la Torre. Small bookstore label on the front fly, and old tape shadows on the pastedowns where a previous owner had affixed the flaps, else fine in an attractive, very good dustwrapper that has been laminated, has corresponding shadows on the flaps, and has suffered some modest fading at the extremities. The last of the author's four novels, and his only non-mystery. Comic and sly novel about a sleepy Mexican fishing village where the only catch is sharks. The village achieves the luxuries of modern civilization when an American buyer of shark livers moves in. Goldsmith, a novelist and screenwriter, is best known for his classic noir novel *Detour*, which was made into the seminal cult noir film. Very scarce. See this book in 3D on our site.         Strangers on a Train.

Harper & Brothers, New York 1950 - First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original cloth. Light wear to the spine tips, else near fine in a very good dust jacket that shows some of the endemic fading to the spine panel. Inscribed by the author. Housed in a custom quarter morocco clamshell box. Very rare signed and inscribed. "For eliciting the menace that lurks in familiar surroundings, there's no one like Patricia Highsmith" (Time). The success of Strangers on a Train allowed Highsmith to quit "hack" writing for magazines and devote her energies full time to fiction. "Her books evoke a quiet tension, a persistent apprehension, which is all the more terrifying and suspenseful for its aura of plausibility" (Vinson, 643-44). It was adapted as a film in 1951, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Farley Granger and Ruth Roman. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Men Against the Stars

Gnome Press, New York 1950 - New York: Gnome Press, 1950. First Edition. Introduction by Willy Ley. Edited by Martin Greenberg, this copy signed, inscribed and presented by him to Arthur C. Clarke. Octavo, 351 pp. Purple cloth-backed gray cloth boards, with silver spine titling and blindstamped launching-spaceship and star motif on purple margin. Pictorial dustjacket by sci-fi illustration luminary Edd Cartier. A near fine book, with only minor page edge soiling and a trace of partial spine fade, in a Very Good + jacket, showing light perimeter wear. Singular copy, inscribed and presented to Arthur C. Clarke by Greenberg, with provenance of unimpeachable order accompanying the book. An increasingly classic collection of short stories by some of the now-timeless sci-fi names. Willy Ley: "Here is a different type of anthology. This book, taken in its entirety, tells a story: the conquest of space. Moving from man's first attempt to reach the moon to the exploration of the ends of the universe, these stories are among the finest ever published." - Willy Ley. Hailed by critics at the time of its publication as a quantum leap forward in both quality and concept for science fiction anthologies, Martin Greenberg's thematically edited Men Against the Stars is a collection of twelve lengthy stories whose authors read like a Who's Who of Golden Age sci-fi, including Isaac Asimov, Murray Leinster, A.E. Van Vogt, L. Ron Hubbard [Hubbard's "When Shadows Fall" is here], and E.M. Hull. Not a slap-dash aggregation to get to the printer quickly, Greenberg's collection was a thoroughly contemplated and planned project, a selection of the very finest available stories on theme, ranging back as far as 1939. Nicely complimented by a Cartier's funky pure genre period stylization jacket. A sci-fi presentation copy of the highest sort, that of a veteran and astute editor to a future superstar. Arthur C. Clarke's reputation at the time was already becoming established, and Greenberg shows the admiration in his skilled critical eye for Clarke's sci-fi talents in his presentation remark.       London: The Cresset Press, 1950., 1950. First U. K. edition of her first and best known novel brilliantly filmed by Alfred Hitchcock, from a screenplay written in large part by Raymond Chandler. Publisher's File Copy with slip affixed to front fly leaf. Near fine in dust jacket with some light professional restoration to the spine ends and corners. In her first novel, Highsmith revels in eliciting the unsettling psychological forces that lurk beneath the surface of everyday life. Two men meet quite casually on the Washington-to-New York train, Guy Haines, a tennis star, and Bruno Anthony, who makes an offer to exchange murders. Bruno Anthony, will kill Guy Haines' estranged wife if Guy will kill Bruno's hated father. Guy doesn't take Bruno seriously until his wife, Miriam, is found murdered in an amusement park. Guy becomes the chief suspect, which threatens his tennis career; his romantic involvement with a U.S. senator's daughter, Anne Morton; his hopes for a political career; and even his life. When Bruno realizes that Guy isn't going to kill his father, he tells Guy that he intends to establish Guy's guilt by planting his monogrammed cigarette lighter at the scene of Miriam's murder. With Anne's help, Guy attempts to stop Bruno after rushing through an important tennis match and racing to the amusement park. Filmed in 1951 and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the movie starred Farley Granger as Guy Haines, Robert Walker as Bruno Anthony, Ruth Roman as Anne Morton, Kasey Rogers as Miriam Haines, and many others. An exceptional copy of a difficult title.
