Electrons and Holes in Semiconductors with Applications to Transistor Electronics

New York: D. Van Nostrand Company. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN EXCEEDINGLY RARE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET of Shockley's enormously influential work, "the first textbook of the electronic age" (Shurkin). "Electrons and Holes in Semiconductors, published in 1950, was Shockley's only book and became a classic of twentieth century science texts. In 551 pages, many of them crammed with formulae and graphs, mundanely bound inside a dull blue-gray and black dust cover, Shockley captured everything then known about semiconductors, even pushing the knowledge about five years into the future with his detailed description of the junction transistor concept. Almost every electrical engineering class in the English-speaking world and most solid state physics classes used it either as a text or at least as a reference book" (Shurkin, Broken Genius: The Rise and Fall of William Shockley). New York: D. Van Nostrand Company, 1950. Book near-fine with a little fading to top edge of cloth; dust jacket with some fading to spine and light edgewear, three small pieces of tape (reinforcement) on verso. Extremely scarce in the original dust jacket.

Trade Catalogue -- Sample Catalogue of Designs for Promotional Playing Cards] Special Playing Card Department.

Brown & Bigelow, St. Paul, MN - N.d., circa 1950. Binder: 30.5 by 26 cm. 23 two-sided sleeves, containing a total of 260 distinct playing cards. The samples are of playing cards the company printed for various businesses, which typically would distribute them to their customers, patrons, business associates, guests and/or employees as complimentary favors. The playing cards themselves are the standard 52 card deck, plus probably jokers. The businesses that would distribute them include hotels, airlines, train lines, gas stations, ocean liners, and really any conceivable manufacturing, utility or other business that might see the value in cultivating its client base with giveaways of this kind. The designs themselves, on the facedown side, could relate to the specific business, and thus might be a picture of the particular hotel, train, airline, etc., or it could have a company logo or just its name, or the design might just be a pretty picture, such as of a horse, a dog, another animal, a boat, a pretty view, a geometric, etc. Most of the cards represented in this album are samples of actual cards the company had already made for its clients, but clearly the album was offering general concepts that a customer could adapt to his liking as welll as specific design choices to which the only customization would be to smack its own business name onto the cards. The firms represented in the album include Esso (now Exxon), Roh Light Lager Beer, Golden State Dairy Foods, Miller High Life, Pepsi-Cola, Adams Orange Juice, Northern Pacific Railway, Great Western Railway, TWA, Boeing, Gruman Albatross, Edgewater Beach Hotel, Hotel Jaragua, the Hotel Roanoke, the Mark Hopkins Hotel, and on and on. The padded faux leather binder has intaglio vignettes, including of a globe, and the title impressed in gilt. Brown & Bigelow was founded in 1896 and remains very much a leading purveyor of business promotional materials such as calendars to this day. It is still based in St. Paul. This is a most unusual, and highly colorful, sample catalogue. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Six Watercolor and Gouache Drawings of Underground Paris Drinking Clubs in the Early 1950s

1950. Color watercolor and gouache illustrations on textured paper. 8.5" x 9.75". Overall near fine with some light wear and scattered light creasing, with one image subtly rubbed at a few places. Vignettes of couples in various stages of inebriation, dancing, and flirting, with dogs and mice in each illustration. The dogs, either French poodles or schnauzers, are (variously) lifting their leg, up at the bar drinking the cocktails through a straw, or dealing with the mice. The walls of the club are covered in graffiti and cobwebs. The graffiti spoofs Existentialism and Bebop culture. One club is called "La Rose Noire [Cafe Existentialiste]" with the band called "l'Ensemble Be-Bop." The cartoon is entitled "La Nausee" referencing Sartre, with the clubgoers looking hungover. Another is entitled "Indigenes de St. Germain de Pres," with two beboppers at the bar. Other graffiti is playful: "Alcool Tue Lentement [Alcohol Kills Slowly]." "Vive Sartre et le Coca Cola" is crossed out, with "vendu aux U.S.A. [Sold to the U.S.A.]" underneath. Other graphics include hearts with girls' names, nude women, and a gallows. Apparently the work of the mysterious artist, Tabou & Cie, with each work titled and numbered on the verso. A charming and vibrant collection of humorous French illustrations. .

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Northern Campanulatum

Published in 1933-1950 - A wonderfully detailed hand colored lithograph from Henry John Elwes book “A Supplement to Elwes' Monograph of the Genus Lilium”, published from 1933-1950. Overall this print is of superior quality on crisp white paper with dimensions of 14.5”x21.5”. In very good condition with some light foxing and staining. H. J. Elwes published the original “Monograph of the Genus Lilium” in 1877-80. In this monumental work a series of magnificent plates represented all the lilies at that time in cultivation in Great Britain. The illustrations were all drawn from living specimens. Elwes recognized that his work was incomplete, as many other species had still to be introduced into European cultivation. It was characteristic of his enthusiasm and energy that immediately on publication of his monograph he began the long and laborious task of collecting material for a supplement. This he pursued for many years, and although unfortunately he passed away before its completion. Arthur Grove, an associate working with Elwes to assemble material for the publication continued with the project. Grove had devoted a long life to the cultivation and study of lilies. Mr. D. Cotton, keeper of the Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, was also instrumental to its publication as .was Lillian Snelling who illustrated the book. The result of these endeavors was a valuable supplement, which was produced in the same form as the original monograph.
