Farmer Giles of Ham, The Rise and Wonderful Adventures of Farmer Giles, Lord of Tame, Count of Worminghall and King of the Little Kingdom, 1st US Edition 1st Impression with Original Dustjacket, Signed By Illustrator Pauline Baynes

Riverside Press Cambridge: Houghton Mifflin, 1950. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Original Cloth. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus. Pauline Baynes. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Farmer Giles of Ham, The Rise and Wonderful Adventures of Farmer Giles, Lord of Tame, Count of Worminghall and King of the Little Kingdom, by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is his second major published work, preceded only by the Hobbit. Published in 1950, printed in Great Britain, this is the 1st impression of the 1st Edition, published by Houghton Mifflin. A Very Good Plus book, signed to the title page by the Illustrator, Pauline Diana Baynes. This was her first commission for Tolkien, who famously said of her Farmer Giles work, that it had "reduced {his} text to a commentary on her drawings". The covers are clean with a moisture mark to the front lower board reaching the lower spine area. The corners are a little bruised with a minor amount of wrinkling and color loss to the dustjacket. The book has a tight binding, with no names or writing, no foxing or offsetting noted. Some light fading to the spine of the dustjacket, with original dustjacket being price clipped to both front and rear flap. Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition, showing a little edgewear, mainly to the top of the spine. The blue and orange colors are bright and clean, no spots or soiling. Textblock is clean and tight, without any foxing, no names or writing, other than the illustrator's signature to the title page. Features two color plates by Pauline Baynes, as well as being illustrated on almost every page with her line drawings. Highly collectable in this signed state, this is a lovely copy for any Tolkien fans collection. Housed in a custom leather slipcase, featuring Tolkien's line drawing of Chrysophylax, gilt stamped to front and the JRRT Monogram to the rear. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.

A "Riffle" or flip book of Santa Claus filling up a Christmas stocking, but which has the unfortunate and presumably inadvertent effect of making it look like Santa is abusing himself. This might account for the scarcity of the book. OCLC locates only two copies, at the Detroit Public Library and National Library of Scotland. .

        U no es Ningú

500 copies (deluxe) numbered 76 to 575clothboundsigned by the artist and the poetSigned book  This book is a veritable bibliographical landmark, due in equal measure to its intrinsic value and its special significance. Antoni Tàpies produced the suite of drawings between 1950-1951, the culminating moment of his oneiric period, when the hallmark of Surrealism and the consolidation of his own personality were crystallizing in works that reached extraordinary heights. Joan Brossa s prose poems, written at the same time as Tàpies was working on his drawings, comprise a parallel vision of the world expressed in literature, and contain a profound lyricism and originality that in themselves justify the prominent position that this poet holds in Catalan literature.

The Word Problem in Semi-Groups With Cancellation

Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Alan Turing's (1912-1954) last paper. Turing gained posthumous fame for his work in early computer theory and the practical application of those theories in the development of the Colossus computer that was responsible for the breaking the German Enigman codes during World War II. After the War, Turing began to contemplate his earlier paper, "On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem," (Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, 2 (1937) 42 (1)) and his conclusion that the halting problem is unsolvable.& & The Halting Problem is the problem in knowing if a machine programmed to solve a problem will finish running or continue running forever. Turing began to wonder if that same hypothesis word transfer to word groups--undoubtedly influenced by his work on the Enigma code breaking project at Bletchley Park during the War. This paper is Turing's conclusion that, in fact, his earlier paper was correct and that theory of the Halting Problem was also unsolvable with word problems.& & Turing is back in the news with the November 2014 biopic, "The Imitation Game" with Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing. Annals of Mathematics, Second Series, Vol. 52, No. 2, September 1950. pp. 491-505. 4to. Ex-Library. Red cloth library binding with gold embossed titling to spine, call number pasted at base, library stamp at head and foredge of text block. Library bookplate on front pastedown, card pocket at rear.
