Six Watercolor and Gouache Drawings of Underground Paris Drinking Clubs in the Early 1950s

1950. Color watercolor and gouache illustrations on textured paper. 8.5" x 9.75". Overall near fine with some light wear and scattered light creasing, with one image subtly rubbed at a few places. Vignettes of couples in various stages of inebriation, dancing, and flirting, with dogs and mice in each illustration. The dogs, either French poodles or schnauzers, are (variously) lifting their leg, up at the bar drinking the cocktails through a straw, or dealing with the mice. The walls of the club are covered in graffiti and cobwebs. The graffiti spoofs Existentialism and Bebop culture. One club is called "La Rose Noire [Cafe Existentialiste]" with the band called "l'Ensemble Be-Bop." The cartoon is entitled "La Nausee" referencing Sartre, with the clubgoers looking hungover. Another is entitled "Indigenes de St. Germain de Pres," with two beboppers at the bar. Other graffiti is playful: "Alcool Tue Lentement [Alcohol Kills Slowly]." "Vive Sartre et le Coca Cola" is crossed out, with "vendu aux U.S.A. [Sold to the U.S.A.]" underneath. Other graphics include hearts with girls' names, nude women, and a gallows. Apparently the work of the mysterious artist, Tabou & Cie, with each work titled and numbered on the verso. A charming and vibrant collection of humorous French illustrations. .

[Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Northern Campanulatum

Published in 1933-1950 - A wonderfully detailed hand colored lithograph from Henry John Elwes book “A Supplement to Elwes' Monograph of the Genus Lilium”, published from 1933-1950. Overall this print is of superior quality on crisp white paper with dimensions of 14.5”x21.5”. In very good condition with some light foxing and staining. H. J. Elwes published the original “Monograph of the Genus Lilium” in 1877-80. In this monumental work a series of magnificent plates represented all the lilies at that time in cultivation in Great Britain. The illustrations were all drawn from living specimens. Elwes recognized that his work was incomplete, as many other species had still to be introduced into European cultivation. It was characteristic of his enthusiasm and energy that immediately on publication of his monograph he began the long and laborious task of collecting material for a supplement. This he pursued for many years, and although unfortunately he passed away before its completion. Arthur Grove, an associate working with Elwes to assemble material for the publication continued with the project. Grove had devoted a long life to the cultivation and study of lilies. Mr. D. Cotton, keeper of the Herbarium at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, was also instrumental to its publication as .was Lillian Snelling who illustrated the book. The result of these endeavors was a valuable supplement, which was produced in the same form as the original monograph.

Two Hydrogen-Bonded Spiral Configurations of the Polypeptide Chain" in The Journal of the American Chemical Society, Vol. LXXII [72], September-December 1950, 5349

      - FIRST EDITION OF LINUS PAULING AND ROBERT COREY'S FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT OF THEIR SEMINAL MOLECULAR BIOLOGY FINDINGS REGARDING THE THEORETICAL ALPHA AND GAMMA HELIXES, TWO CONFIGURATIONS OF THE ARRANGEMENT OF ATOMS IN PROTEINS. The authors "must have realized the bombshell they had dropped on the scientific world. Knowledge of the inner workings of proteins -- molecules often referred to as the building blocks of life -- would be the key to understanding biology at the molecular level" (Brownlee in PNAS Website). A full decade before x-ray crystallography first revealed the structures of proteins, Pauling and Corey deduced their main structural features: the alpha and the gamma helix. Their work had the same significance for proteins as the Watson and Crick papers, published two years later, had for the structure of DNA. In the short letter that published in this volume, the two scientists clearly state "that they had come up with two spiral models; they mention their hydrogen bonding scheme and assert that there was evidence that the proposed structures were present in a variety of proteins. They hinted at a molecular model for silk. They said nothing about the discrepancy between their models and the x-ray data. They ended with the promise that 'a detailed account of this work will be published soon'" (Special Collections and Archive Research, Oregon State). "Pauling and Corey's research, now over a half-century old, guides today's biotechnology revolution and the search for hundreds of disease cures -- drugs that may someday conquer Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, Mad Cow disease and many forms of cancer" (Brownlee). Linus Paulingwon the 1954 Nobel Prize in Chemistry "for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the elucidation of the structure of complex substances' (Nobel Prize Committee). CONDITION & DETAILS: Easton: American Chemical Society. Full volume. Quarto (10.25 x 7.5 inches; 256 x 188mm). Bound in maroon cloth with decorative paper boards. Gilt-lettered, green morocco spine label. Minor rubbing and scuffing at the edges. Tiny spot on spine label. Tightly and very solidly bound. Bright and clean throughout. Very good condition.

What's the water like? Looks pretty cold!

      c. 1950 - Sheet size: 255 × 327 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Autograph Quotation / Broadside / Publicity Photograph.

      - American poet and Lincoln biographer. A stunning trio of items archivally matted and framed together. First, the scarce broadside "Ever Normal Turmoil," 10½" X 15", printed at San Francisco's famed Peregrine Press in October 1950 in an edition of 200 copies. Very good. Sandburg composed this meditation upon war and peace on July 9, 1944. Alongside this is an appropriate autograph item: a small, unsigned Autograph Quotation in pencil, reading in full: "The first world war came and its / cost was laid on the people. / The second world war -- what will / be its cost and will it repay the / people for what they pay?" Very good. Mild age toning. Next to this is the third item, a scarce large publicity portrait of Sandburg by Robert Buchbinder. Near fine. A tremendous trio, simply and tastefully presented.
