        My Stocking

[New York]: Harper and Brothers. (1950). First. First edition. Small size (approximately 4" x 3"). Canvas bound printed paper over thick card. Fine. A "Riffle" or flip book of Santa Claus filling up a Christmas stocking, but which has the unfortunate and presumably inadvertent effect of making it look like Santa is abusing himself. This might account for the scarcity of the book. OCLC locates only two copies, at the Detroit Public Library and National Library of Scotland. .

        U no es Ningú

500 copies (deluxe) numbered 76 to 575clothboundsigned by the artist and the poetSigned book  This book is a veritable bibliographical landmark, due in equal measure to its intrinsic value and its special significance. Antoni Tàpies produced the suite of drawings between 1950-1951, the culminating moment of his oneiric period, when the hallmark of Surrealism and the consolidation of his own personality were crystallizing in works that reached extraordinary heights. Joan Brossa s prose poems, written at the same time as Tàpies was working on his drawings, comprise a parallel vision of the world expressed in literature, and contain a profound lyricism and originality that in themselves justify the prominent position that this poet holds in Catalan literature.

The Word Problem in Semi-Groups With Cancellation

Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Alan Turing's (1912-1954) last paper. Turing gained posthumous fame for his work in early computer theory and the practical application of those theories in the development of the Colossus computer that was responsible for the breaking the German Enigman codes during World War II. After the War, Turing began to contemplate his earlier paper, "On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem," (Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, 2 (1937) 42 (1)) and his conclusion that the halting problem is unsolvable.& & The Halting Problem is the problem in knowing if a machine programmed to solve a problem will finish running or continue running forever. Turing began to wonder if that same hypothesis word transfer to word groups--undoubtedly influenced by his work on the Enigma code breaking project at Bletchley Park during the War. This paper is Turing's conclusion that, in fact, his earlier paper was correct and that theory of the Halting Problem was also unsolvable with word problems.& & Turing is back in the news with the November 2014 biopic, "The Imitation Game" with Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing. Annals of Mathematics, Second Series, Vol. 52, No. 2, September 1950. pp. 491-505. 4to. Ex-Library. Red cloth library binding with gold embossed titling to spine, call number pasted at base, library stamp at head and foredge of text block. Library bookplate on front pastedown, card pocket at rear.         Strike Through the Mask! New Lyrical Poems

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1950. First. First edition. Faint tidemark at the bottom of the pages, a good only copy in good plus dustwrapper with several modest chips and tears. Inscribed by Viereck (who won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry the year before for his book Terror and Decorum) to fellow Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks (who won in 1950 for Annie Allen): "To Gwendolyn Brooks with gratitude and admiration for her art. Peter Viereck." While by no means a "condition copy," a very notable association. .
