The title is derived from the last words of Confederate General Thomas J. (Stonewall) Jackson. The novel opens on the last day of Colonel Richard Cantwell's life. He is duck hunting in Trieste, Italy, his thoughts presented in a protracted flashback, with Cantwell thinking about a young Venetian woman, Renata, and about his experiences during World War II. Not long before writing the novel during a trip to Italy, Hemingway met young Adriana Ivancich, with whom he became infatuated; he used her as the model for the female character in the novel. The novel's central theme is death, and, more importantly, how death is faced. One biographer and critic sees a parallel between Hemingway's Across the River and Into the Trees and Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. The novel is built upon successive layers of symbolism, as in his other writing, Hemingway employs here his distinctive spare style (the iceberg theory), where the substance lies below the surface of the plot. Background:Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 ?" July 2, 1961) was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short story collections, and two non-fiction works. Additional works, including three novels, four short story collections, and three non-fiction works, were published posthumously. Many of his works are considered classics of American literature.Hemingway was raised in Oak Park, Illinois. After high school he reported for a few months for The Kansas City Star, before leaving for the Italian front to enlist with the World War I ambulance drivers. In 1918, he was seriously wounded and returned home. His wartime experiences formed the basis for his novel A Farewell to Arms (1929).Condition:Condition is Very Good.  Some wear to edges of jacket, pages/hinges/text block are very good/excellent for over 60 years old!!!

VERY GOOD CONDITIONS. ORIGINAL ARTWORKS BY A FAMOUS AND UNKNOWN FEMDOM ARTIST, CIRCA 1950. (c) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Wot 'cher Jack, 'appy New Year!

      c. 1950. Sheet size: 195 × 231 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

In a lovely example of an incredibly garish uncredited Mervyn Peake dustwrapper (?) in which he duplicates one of his images for The Rime of The Ancient Mariner, so something of a pay the rent job presumably (or a bit of absolutely shameless copying to style by someone with an almost admirable degree of gall). It's a riot of neon green and purple with merely light edgewear to detract from its nauseous grandeur. Internally clean. A lovely copy of an edition that seems considerably rarer than the US first.

[Monsterbeskyttet Kaj Kjeldsen] No date, circa 1950 - The game board with an impressive pop-up circus tent featuring Dumbo in the center preparing for his famed "burning building leap" and decorated with colorful characters from the movie. Included game pieces featuring colourful characters and an instruction sheet in Danish. 19 by 19 inches, fold-up cardboard game board, and a colorful pictorially decorated paper-board box containing the Dumbo playing pieces, a die, and an instruction sheet. One sheet of playing instructions in Danish. The pop up board is in lovely condition, some wear to the small box of playing pieces. A WELL-PRESERVED DISNEY GAME and one featuring one of the studio’s most beloved animal characters. Dumbo is of course the baby elephant who could fly. Although the rules are in Danish, the game is fairly simple to figure out and appears to be essentially complete. The main attraction here however is the fabulous pop-up circus scene which serves as a centerpiece to the playing-board.

        [Group of Five Typescript Poems]

[Np: The Author, no earlier than 1950].. Ten leaves, quarto. Typed on rectos only. Some tanning and modest finger soiling, some old folds from having been mailed, but in good order. An interesting lot of typescripts of early poems by Ginsberg, originally from the papers of his friend and fellow writer, John Clellon Holmes, and likely sent or given to him for his comments. Four of the typescripts are dated in black ink at the conclusion of the poem, ranging 1945-1950. The poems are as follow: a) "An Early Poem Revised," with a previous dedication scratched out in black ink ("for Richard W[illegible]"). 1 page. Dated "1945 - 1950." This is a draft of the poem printed as "An Eastern Ballad" in the CP of 1985, and includes a stanza not present in the galleys of that collected final version. b) "Stanzas Written at Night in Radio City." Two pages, undated. Apart from alteration of one word, this typescript conforms to the text printed in CP 1985, but does not include the two final stanzas (likely a concluding page is missing). c) "The Song of the Shrouded Stranger of the Night." Two different typescripts, on three leaves, one with the title shortened, omitting 'of the Night,' with Ginsberg's typed name at the top, and with one pencil correction. The other typescript is dated in ink, 1949-1950. The text is the rhymed version, and both typescripts present a state of the poem substantially different from that collected as "The Shrouded Stranger" in CP (1985), where it is dated "1949-1951." d) "Ode to the Setting Sun." 2 pages. Dated '1949' in ink at conclusion. Compared to the text included in the CP of 1985, this draft includes a substantially longer explanatory "Note" after the title, and includes several important differences in diction and sentence construction. e) "In Judgement." Two pages, dated in ink at end "1950." This typescript presents a significantly variant form of the poem collected as "In Memoriam" in the CP of 1985. While assuredly apprentice work, and not of the caliber of his poetry of a half-decade later, this is a textually important and interesting lot of typescripts.

Born in Lund, Sweden, Hill travelled to France in 1873 in search of his artistic ideal, which he came to feel that he had discovered at Barbizon, falling under the influence of Daubigny, Theodore Rousseau, Corot and Courbet. For a while he painted landscapes in a style very close to that of Corot, and had a painting accepted for the Paris Salon in 1875. But by 1876 he had adopted a lighter, airier "unfinished" style and his entry was refused by the Salon. His originality had been noted by the Impressionists who invited him to show with them in 1877, but it was in that year that he suffered his first mental crisis. In January 1878 he was placed in an asylum in Paris where he stayed until he was sent home in 1880. From then until his death in 1911 he was cared for by his mother and sisters at home in Lund, for thirty years steadily turning out thousands of ink and crayon drawings straddling the border of naturalism and the fantastic, possessed of a uniquely concentrated visionary quality. In 1994 interest in him revived when Georg Baselitz produced a book on his work for the Danish publishers Bløndal. A beautifully produced monograph, text printed by G. Girard and plates engraved by Guezelle and Renouard.
