        Drawings by C.F. Hill

Paris, Albert Skira, Éditeur,, 1950. Quarto. Text and plates loose, as issued, in publisher's printed stiff wrappers, glassine dust jacket, in original ecru rough linen clamshell box. Colour frontispiece and 25 fine colour reproductions of drawings, in window mounts, illustrations to the text. Near fine. First Edition, edition of 625 copies "375 are for sale numbered 1-375, and 250 copies numbered I-CCL", this copy XV. Born in Lund, Sweden, Hill travelled to France in 1873 in search of his artistic ideal, which he came to feel that he had discovered at Barbizon, falling under the influence of Daubigny, Theodore Rousseau, Corot and Courbet. For a while he painted landscapes in a style very close to that of Corot, and had a painting accepted for the Paris Salon in 1875. But by 1876 he had adopted a lighter, airier "unfinished" style and his entry was refused by the Salon. His originality had been noted by the Impressionists who invited him to show with them in 1877, but it was in that year that he suffered his first mental crisis. In January 1878 he was placed in an asylum in Paris where he stayed until he was sent home in 1880. From then until his death in 1911 he was cared for by his mother and sisters at home in Lund, for thirty years steadily turning out thousands of ink and crayon drawings straddling the border of naturalism and the fantastic, possessed of a uniquely concentrated visionary quality. In 1994 interest in him revived when Georg Baselitz produced a book on his work for the Danish publishers Bløndal. A beautifully produced monograph, text printed by G. Girard and plates engraved by Guezelle and Renouard.

Farmer Giles of Ham, The Rise and Wonderful Adventures of Farmer Giles, Lord of Tame, Count of Worminghall and King of the Little Kingdom, 1st US Edition 1st Impression with Original Dustjacket, Signed By Illustrator Pauline Baynes

Riverside Press Cambridge: Houghton Mifflin, 1950. 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. Original Cloth. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus. Pauline Baynes. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Farmer Giles of Ham, The Rise and Wonderful Adventures of Farmer Giles, Lord of Tame, Count of Worminghall and King of the Little Kingdom, by J.R.R. Tolkien. This is his second major published work, preceded only by the Hobbit. Published in 1950, printed in Great Britain, this is the 1st impression of the 1st Edition, published by Houghton Mifflin. A Very Good Plus book, signed to the title page by the Illustrator, Pauline Diana Baynes. This was her first commission for Tolkien, who famously said of her Farmer Giles work, that it had "reduced {his} text to a commentary on her drawings". The covers are clean with a moisture mark to the front lower board reaching the lower spine area. The corners are a little bruised with a minor amount of wrinkling and color loss to the dustjacket. The book has a tight binding, with no names or writing, no foxing or offsetting noted. Some light fading to the spine of the dustjacket, with original dustjacket being price clipped to both front and rear flap. Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition, showing a little edgewear, mainly to the top of the spine. The blue and orange colors are bright and clean, no spots or soiling. Textblock is clean and tight, without any foxing, no names or writing, other than the illustrator's signature to the title page. Features two color plates by Pauline Baynes, as well as being illustrated on almost every page with her line drawings. Highly collectable in this signed state, this is a lovely copy for any Tolkien fans collection. Housed in a custom leather slipcase, featuring Tolkien's line drawing of Chrysophylax, gilt stamped to front and the JRRT Monogram to the rear. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.

The Black Slip case is in very good condition, also good and strong... there is some rubbing to the edges. Volume 1 is the text and volume 2 the commentaries. Volume 1 has notes on the free end and paste down that completely fill those 2 pages, mostly in Pencil but some blue pen, doesn't appear to have any other notes or marks in the books. Both volumes have a personal Library card pocket in the back of each book. Overall a nice set for this rare edition! CAME FROM THE ESTATE SALE OF A SMOKER!
