Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1950 - Octavo, boards. The second Lew Archer novel. "A noirish, centrifugal amorality pervades Archer's world and The Drowning Pool does not conclude nicely or neatly. Original black limp calf, publisher's red and gilt device to front cover, spine lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. In a suede-lined burgundy morocco drop-back box with gilt-lettered morocco label to spine and front cover by Bayntun-Riviere. Wood-engraved illustrations by Eric Gill. Ownership inscription of H. T. Spencer on front pastedown. Head of spine chipped, head of front panel separating slightly at spine, minor foxing to edges, internally fine. A very good copy. Signed on the front free endpaper by Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson. All three actors appeared together in the film version of Richard III (1955), Olivier repeating his star turn as first seen on stage in the Old Vic London season in 1944. "With Ralph Richardson as a Buckingham wittily described by Paul Dehn as 'a Mr Baldwin who has read Machiavelli' (Dehn, 76) and John Gielgud as an exquisitely lyrical Clarence, the film also had a star power impossible to achieve at the Old Vic" (ODNB). It is more than likely that this book was signed by them during filming. The edition is the New Temple Shakespeare, first published thus in 1935, this impression dated 1950. From the library of John Gielgud, sold after his death.

        [The Novels:]

London: J. D. Dent & Sons Ltd,, 1950-55. Pride and Prejudice; Sense and Sensibility; Northanger Abbey; Persuasion; Mansfield Park; Emma. 6 works, octavo (180 × 117 mm). Near-contemporary red crushed morocco, spines lettered in gilt with gilt motifs, gilt rules to boards and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Frontispiece and 15 colour plates to each volume. Spines sightly faded, internally fresh; an excellent set. An attractively bound set of the charmingly illustrated novels. C. E. Brock (1870-1938) first appeared as an illustrator of Jane Austen within Macmillan's 1895-7 series (with introductions by Austin Dobson), Brock illustrating only Pride and Prejudice, and Hugh Thomson illustrating the other five titles. That series was illustrated in black and white, which better suited Thomson's skilful use of line. A decade later, J. M. Dent, realising Brock's potential as a colourist, commissioned him to redo the Pride and Prejudice suite, this time in colour, and to create colour illustrations for the other five Austen titles. Dent's "Series of English Idylls" thus presents the first Brock illustrations for the complete Austen set and the first in colour. Brock was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour in 1908, and certainly his vision of Austen's world, its gentle graces and sharp ironies, is best expressed, as here, in colour. Furthermore, the colourful costumes and interior decor depicted in these illustrations are reputedly accurate to the Regency period, for Charles Brock and his brother Henry collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.
