        The Town & The City

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company,, 1950. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a green cloth box. Minor repair to the rear hinge, spine a little dull. Very good in dust jacket supplied from another copy. First edition, first printing. A fine contemporary presentation copy with the author's signed inscription to the half title leaf, "To Arni and the Missus with best wishes From Jack Kerouac". The recipient was the photographer who took the portrait of Kerouac for the jacket of this edition. Signed copies of this title are not as infrequently seen as other of Kerouac's works, as he did some signing sessions for it. However, those copies are almost signed as John, not Jack, in keeping with his name as given in the book. Early personal presentation inscriptions signed as Jack are rare.

Fourth-order corrections in quantum electrodynamics and the magnetic moment of the electron' in The Physical Review, vol. 77 no. 4 (15 Feb 1950)

The American Physical Society 1950 - AN IMPORTANT EARLY USE OF FEYNMAN DIAGRAMS. Karplus and Kroll were amongst the very first to use Feynman diagrams in performing Quantum Electrodynamic calculations, and in this landmark paper they refine earlier work by Dirac and Feynman himself (on the behaviour of an electron in an external electromagnetic field). Feynman diagrams had been introduced only two years previously, in 1948, and in fact Karplus and Kroll make more of their debt to Freeman Dyson than Feynman, Dyson having written key papers on the technique in the interim. Offered here is a single issue of The Physical Review, in the original and distinctive green wraps. Good to very good condition: covers a little marked (but see photograph), and with a very small nick to the top of the spine (5mm or so); faint pencil ownership inscription to the top of the front cover; internally very good, clean and bright throughout. Ron Hubbard and is practiced by followers of Scientology and separate independent Dianeticist groups. Hubbard coined Dianetics from the Greek stems dia, meaning "through," and nous, meaning "mind". Dianetics has achieved no acceptance as a scientific theory, and is an example of a pseudoscience.Dianetics divides the mind into three parts: the conscious "analytical mind," the subconscious "reactive mind," and the somatic mind. The goal of Dianetics is to remove the "reactive mind," which Scientologists believe prevents people from becoming more ethical, more aware, happier and saner. The Dianetics procedure to achieve this is called "auditing". Auditing is a process whereby a series of questions are asked by the Scientology auditor, in an attempt to rid the audited person of the painful experiences of the past, which Scientologists believe to be the cause of the "reactive mind".Background:Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (March 13, 1911 ?" January 24, 1986), better known as L. Ron Hubbard and often referred to by his initials, LRH, was an American author and the founder of the Church of Scientology. After establishing a career as a writer, becoming best known for his science fiction and fantasy stories, he developed a self-help system called Dianetics which was first expounded in book form in May 1950. He subsequently developed his ideas into a wide-ranging set of doctrines and rituals as part of a new religious movement that he called Scientology. His writings became the guiding texts for the Church of Scientology and a number of affiliated organizations that address such diverse topics as business administration, literacy and drug rehabilitation.Condition:Condition is Very Good.  Small wear to edges/jacket, few small white spots to lower front board, pages/hinges/text block are very good for over 60 years old!!!
