        Six Modern One-Act Plays

London: University of London Press 1950 - FIRST EDITION, thus. SIGNED BY JOHN LENNON. Octavo, pp.160. Publisher's softcovers. Some soiling and associated reading wear. An interesting school text-book borrowed by Lennon whilst a student at Quarry Bank School, Liverpool. Lennon has signed the lending stamp to the inside cover 'J[ohn] W[inston] Lennon, IVC', and dated this '1955'. The details have been crossed through by the subsequent reader in 1961-2. This signed library book represents an especially early autograph from the future Beatle, at this time aged just 14; 'The Quarrymen' band was formed by John aged 15 and was named after the high school noted within this volume. Music aside, the subject of the book has a clear link to his later career as a dramatist; Lennon co-wrote the play 'A Spaniard In the Works' with Victor Spinetti and starred in the film 'How I Won the War'. An important item, accompanied by a statement of provenence from Paul Wane one of the world's most respected Beatles specialists. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Der zweite Weltkrieg * 10 Bände, jeweils als H A L B F R A N Z B A N D / H A L B L E D E R - H a n d e i n b a n d

Hamburg, J.P.Toth Verlag, 1950. The Chronicles of Narnia Set: The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician's Nephew, The Last Battle. Copy

Geofrey Bles 1950-1956, London - First British editions of each of the seven volumes in the author's acclaimed Narnia Series. Octavo, 7 volumes. Each is finely bound in full red morocco, raised bands, gilt titles to the spine, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Illustrations throughout by Pauline Baynes. Octavo, seven volumes. An exceptional set. The Chronicles of Narnia is "unforgettable not only for the excitement and suspense of the adventures but also for the strong emotions they describe so well [and they are] further enriched by Lewis' skillful use of language" (Silvey, 406). "Each book has something new and different to offer and there is no weakening of either inspiration or interest" (Eyre, 132). It is interesting that Lewis' inspiration came from a dream: "At first I had very little idea how the story would go. But then suddenly Aslan came bounding into it. I think I had been having a good many dreams of lions about that time[O]nce he was there, he pulled the whole story together, and soon he pulled the six other Narnian stories in after him (On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature, 1980). Lewis was "concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction to re-imagine thestory in an exciting narrative context [The Narnia books are] intoxicating to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative of readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th-century author" (Carpenter & Pritchard, 370).         Photo Album]: 1950 Automotive Road Trip

1950 - Quarto commercial album. Measuring approximately 10.25" x 7.25". A total of 88 leaves with the first 37 containing 123 black and white photographs and photo postcards dry set in corner mounts on the versos and rectos (the final pages are unused). Overall very good plus or better. Album of photographs and real photo postcards chronicling a 1950 road trip, primarily along U.S. Highways 66, 180, and 83 through Eastern New Mexico then South through Texas, following the U.S.-Mexico border capturing scenic views in and around areas including Carlsbad, Pharr, El Paso, and Corpus Christi. Many images taken across the dashboard of a 1937 Plymouth Coupe, in a classic "through-the-windshield" style, beautifully capturing life on the road in the American Southwest. A quintessential album of postwar automotive Americana, embodying the spirit of the open road and eerily evoking Kerouac's *On the Road*, written at roughly the same time and inspired by many of these same highways.         Autograph letter signed "Benjamin [?]Br" to the noted English composer, broadcaster, and writer on music Antony Hopkins.

2 pp. Octavo (ca. 176 x 137 mm). Dated July 6, 1950. In ink on stationery with "4 Crabbe St. Aldeburgh, Suffolk" printed at head. Britten warmly thanks "Tony" for writing an overture for the Aldeburgh Festival, which Britten, Peter Pears, and Eric Crozier had founded in 1948. He apologizes for not writing sooner, and for not spending more time with Hopkins and his wife, Alison, during the Festival. "... [the Overture] made an extremely brilliant effect, and was a perfect opening piece for what, I think, turned out to be a nice concert. I especially admired the restraint & skill in writing for the small body of performers. The performance seemed fine - I hope you were pleased... I was sorry not to see more of you & Alison - but the whole social business of the week gets a bit out of hand... Thank you again for your kindness, promptness & skill in writing the overture." Slightly worn and soiled; creased at fold and slightly overall; minor foxing to small area of verso. / Hopkins's Festival Overture was first performed at the Aldeburgh Festival on June 24, 1950, in Aldeburgh Parish Church, conducted by the composer. Of the work, Hopkins writes: "Judge of my surprise when I received a letter from Benjamin Britten asking me to write a short Festival Overture for the then comparatively new Aldeburgh Festival. It was to be for a tiny band - just 11 strings and 2 trumpets. I had earlier dedicated my first opera to Britten and this may have been a kindly reciprocal gesture. I duly wrote this piece and tried to finish it triumphantly, despite the small resources. My 'triumph' was received in total silence - I had forgotten that the performance was given in the local church, and in those days applause wasn't allow in churches. Surely the angels wouldn't mind? Anyway, to this day, it was the biggest anti-climax of my life, and I slunk out of the building a broken spirit." From Goodmusic Publishers online. After its first publication, the Festival Overture was named Aldeburgh Festival Suite. "[Britten] and his contemporary Michael Tippett are among several pairs of composers who dominated English art music in the 20th century. Of their music, Britten?s early on achieved, and has maintained, wider international circulation." Philip Brett et al. in Grove Music Online.

[Photo Album]: 1950 Automotive Road Trip

[Circa 1950]. Quarto commercial album. A quintessential album of postwar automotive Americana, embodying the spirit of the open road and eerily evoking Kerouac's On the Road, written at roughly the same time and inspired by many of these same highways. .

Edge of Doom (Original Film Pressbook)

Los Angeles: Samuel Goldwyn Company / RKO Radio Pictures, 1950. Original pressbook for the 1950 film noir. Based on the 1949 novel by Leo Brady. Written for the screen by Philip Yordan and Ben Hecht. An RKO release that flopped at its premiere, so much that the producers at Goldwyn had Ben Hecht write framing scenes to be added to the wide release. Essential noir, with Catholic overtones and optimism, about an impoverished family and the depths to which a frustrated young man (Farley Granger) can sink, culminating in murder (Silver, et al.). 12 pages, with one insert (folded once), 12 x 18 inches, saddle stitched. Very Good plus, with a faint horizontal fold crease at the center of the wrapper and pages, a few short closed tears at the edges, light soil, and a tiny chip at one corner of the insert. Neibaur 252. Selby (1984) 122. Silver, p. 104. Spicer, p. 409.

        [Photo Album]: Florida Air Station

Key West, Florida. 1950s. A collection of 108 black and white photographs most measuring 3.5" x 4.5" from an American military base during the Korean War. Based on a single caption it would appear that at least some of the photographs were taken at the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. The assemblage documents the comings and goings on the naval air base with pilots working on equipment and posing in uniform on aircraft. Also pictured are midair photos of helicopters from the Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 1 and aircraft carriers. Eight pictures show the wreckage in the aftermath of a plane crash. It has anecdotally been suggested these are the work of Edward Steichen, although we could find no evidence to support this. A splendid and varied group of photos showing the Navy at work. .

Ball from 1941 World Series later signed by Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean

[Detroit], August 1, 1950. "Baseball Signed “Dizzy Dean.” Signature, light, 2/3 strength. Toned, scuffed, surface tear. No markings visible, unable to identify manufacturer. Handwritten in unidentified hand on side panel “1941 / World Series / N.Y. Yanks / and / Brooklyn Dodgers” so this apparently was a ball used at the ’41 World Series. Handwritten in another hand, near Dean’s signature, most probably indicating when the Hall of Fame pitcher signed it, “August / 1st 1950.”On October 5, 1941, Brooklyn had won game four of the 1941 World Series 4-3 when, with two out and no one on base, it seemed that pitcher Hugh Casey had struck out Tommy Henrich ending the game, tying the World Series at two games each. But the ball got past Dodger catcher Mickey Owen and Henrich was safe at first base. Then DiMaggio singled, Keller doubled, Dickey walked, Gordon doubled, and Rizzuto walked before Murphy grounded out to end the inning. The Dodgers were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth and the Yankees had won the game 7-4, giving them a commanding 3-1 game lead. New York won game 5 and the 1941 World Series the next day.Dizzy Dean was a sportscaster for the New York Yankees in 1950. On August 1, 1950, the Yankees lost to the Tigers 7-3 in Detroit."

"Visions of Gerard". Corrected typescript signed

1950. Signed in pencil "John Kerouac" at the end of the last page. 4 pages, single spaced carbon typescript on onion-skin paper, with extensive manuscript revisions by Kerouac on the first page, and a few on the others, totaling 45 words in his hand. This draft typescript, identified by Kerouac on the first page as a "short short", is the germ of the novel of the same title, and probably the earliest extant fragment of Kerouac's "Legend of Duluoz". In our typescript Kerouac tells the stories of his saintly eight year-old brother Gerard who died in 1926, when Jack was four years-old: Gerard feeding birds which flocked to his windowsill, and his rescue of a mouse, which his cat then ate. Here Kerouac uses the name Daoulas as his family name; connecting this draft with his unfinished Michael Daoulas book, written in 1945; he'd also used that name before settling on "Martin" for the family in "The Town and the City" and before adopting a more French sounding version "Duluoz". In a lengthy confessional letter to Neal Cassady, dated 28 December 1950 - Jan. 3, 1951, Kerouac tells these same stories, writing of the cat and mouse story: "My mother heard every word of it; the text has been translated to me a million times, now it's garbled. If I could only have heard his exact words. Don't you see, Neal, I never told you, I believe my brother was a saint...I could not live without this confession". On stylistic grounds our typescript appears to precede this letter which was among his first experiments in spontaneous prose, although identical sentences appear in both. Folded twice as for mailing. Provenance: Jonathan Goodwin - Maurice Neville.

Hokuseido had published a large amount of Hearn's writings since Hearn's death in 1904, and was a close friend of the Koizumi family. * While Kazuo's name only appears at the end in the limitation colophon being Hearn's son, he sanctioned this by signing it for each of the 350 copies issued. * Printed on hand-made watermarked Japanese vellum paper with Hearn's crest. Bound in gold-stamped title on the covers, in decorated boards with silver flecked Washi paper. Contains 10 page facsimile of Hearn 's manuscript with his cinnabar Hanko [chop] seals. Below the stamped number, there is Kazuo Koizumi's brush-signed signature in Japanese, along with two of his square cinnabar Hanko [chop] seals. * A special copy contains his English signature along side the Japanese signature, which was numbered one [of 350 in all], and was a special presentation copy to a friend.
