        Tee-Pee-Gee (The Prison Game)

Milwaukee, WI: Tee-Pee-Gee Company, n.d. but ca.1950. "The fascination of this game lies in the variety of ways, chances, and combinations in which it can be played. For instance - a player may decide to play all the men on the straight and narrow path to freedom by being pardoned, or take a shorter but more risky method as a fugitive. The trials of fate and temptation may enter at any time and upset all plans. This novel game, which may be played by two to six players, illustrates the separation of prisoners from the outside world and their discipline and reformation. It is a game of chance and skill and the possibility of your opponents' chance to win depends upon where and how you make your moves. It will hold you spellbound from beginning to end" - opening statement from instruction booklet. A prison-themed board game with a phantom manufacturer; our research has failed to reveal much information about either one, though in theory and objective, it bears remarkable similarities to the much later (ca.1990's) board game The Slammer, produced by Ruppert Games. Tee-Pee-Gee can be played by up to six players, and while it appears fairly easy at first glance, the dynamics are quite complicated, with game pieces representing inmates, messengers, guards, and visitors. The possibility for numerous moves exists, dictated by the roll of the dice, cards chosen, and each players respective positioning on the board. Prisoners can be released or can choose to escape, with or without the help of visitors. The winner of the game is the player with all their prisoners outside the walls, either as "pardoned" or "fugitives," and their visitor(s) "in good standing" with the prison officials. Rare; we find no example for sale at the time of this writing (March, 2015), and no record in OCLC. Board game, consisting of one (1) game board (21.5" x 22"), set of two (2) red acrylic dice, 41 round and square painted wood pieces in black, white, green, red, yellow, blue, and brown (one black piece replaced), 17 game cards (2.25" x 3.75", printed on rectos only), and original instruction manual (6" x 4"). Dice, game pieces, and cards housed in the original manufacturers two-piece box. Game board is hinged with linen, lightly worn at extremities with some occasional board exposure; instruction manual is browned overall, folded in half, with some splitting along spine fold and holographic notes to front and rear wrappers. Box for entire game not present, though it is unclear whether or not one was issued. Presumed complete.

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA [Fine Art Print, The Historic Work to Celebrate Szyk's Adoptive Home of America.]

New Canaan, CT.: Arthur Szyk, 1950. The first printing of this masterwork collotype lithograph, called the "New Canaan Edition". This printing is much larger then the 1953 posthumous reprint authorized by the artist's wife. Beautifully done in the style of a medieval manuscript but with more modern themes and imagery. The document with which the fledgling United States proclaimed its independence from Great Britain, this illumination features a portrait of George Washington, scenes of the Revolutionary War, and national symbols such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the bald eagle. The complete text of the Declaration of Independence is framed by iconic elements excerpted from the great seals and flags of the U.S. states and territories: 41 along the top and right, 13 others adjacent to the names of the Declaration?s signers. Image size measures 29 inches x 23 inches. Sheet size measures 37 inches x 29 inches., on fine heavy cream stock. In very fine condition. THE SCARCE PRINTING OF SZYK'S LARGEST AND MOST MAJESTIC ILLUMINATION. Polish born Jewish artist Arthur Szyk originally gained popularity through his World War II caricatures, in which he often depicted the leaders of the Axis powers. After the war, he devoted himself to political issues in his beloved new home of America. Szyk?s profound respect for America, its history, and its people culminate in this majestic illumination of one of the nation's most important documents. The original artwork of The Declaration was dedicated in New Canaan, Connecticut, in a festive celebration on July 4, 1950; it is the largest of all Szyk?s illuminations and was one of his last works before his death in 1951. Alongside the signers of the Declaration Szyk provides a visual history of the United States flag. The left column shows three flags said to have flown during the Revolutionary War. The predominantly blue one is called the Bunker Hill flag, whose upper left corner contains symbols both of new country (the pine tree) and of Great Britain (St. George?s cross). The pine tree appears also on the flag below with the phrase ?An Appeal to Heaven.? Adopted in 1775, this banner was designed by George Washington?s secretary, Colonel Joseph Reed. The pine tree is prominent because it was a longtime symbol of New England, and sacred to the Native Americans. ?An Appeal to Heaven? is a reference to John Locke?s political writings which defended the right to revolt. The Gadsden flag (designed by General Christopher Gadsden) features a rattlesnake and the words ?Don?t Tread On Me.? The rattlesnake, like the bald eagle, is unique to America and representative in that its rattles, like the U.S. states, come together to sound warning when disturbed and while it will not attack unless provoked, its strike is deadly. The right column is topped by the Continental Colors flag (also known as the Grand Union flag). Considered the first U.S. flag bearing resemblance to the Stars and Stripes, it combines Great Britain?s Union Jack in the upper left with the stripes of the United States, and was in use from December 1775 to June 1777. Below is the famous Betsy Ross flag, in use from June 1777 through May 1795. Last, but not least, is the nation?s flag in its contemporary form. It is said that this work and his Proclamation on the Statehood of Israel hung side by side in the Szyk household until his death in 1951.

Photographs - Korean War - British Army Support of 29th Independt Infantry Brigade

South Korea, 1950. South Korea, 1950-1951. Album of snapshot photographs from the Korean War, taken by an officer of British 29th Independent Infantry Brigade, serving with the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME), Telecommunications Section. Contains 76 photographs taken at Seoul, Chonan, Pyeongtaek, Sosa, Osan, Uijeongbu and Tokchon, each mounted with clear corners onto taupe cardstock leaves separated with tissue guards, with detailed manuscript captions. Oblong 8vo. string-tied album measuring approximately 31 x 22 cm, green cloth boards with gilt border. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 4,5 x 5,5 cm, and the largest 12 x 8,5 cm. Small and insignificant indentation to boards, otherwise in Very Good Condition, with vivid memorable photographs. Firsthand snapshot images by a British officer as he was participating in the Korean War between North and South, show various temporary work sites and tent camps established throughout South Korea, military men at work, as well as Korean civilians observing the foreigners while attempting to restore villages, homes and familiar routines. Serving in the British Army, and ultimately assisting the United Nations and the United States of America defend and protect South Korea, manuscript captions date these images from 5 November 1951, on the approach by sea toward Pusan Harbour on November, to the end of May 1951 whilst stationed in Seoul following the Battle of the Imjin River. The earliest photograph taken on land is at Cheonan, where a group snapshot of the "TECS" section pose together in front of the 10th Infantry Workshop, 4 February 1951. [As a transportation center, this was the site of an early engagement in the Korean War, the Battle of Cheonan.] Captioned 22 February 1951, one month the Battle of Kumyangjang-Ni which took place on 25 and 26 January 1951, a soldier is creating some sort of apparatus, aided by a young boy named Chang, near Kumyangjang-Ni, known popularly as K-Town. [During the Battle of Kumyangjang-Ni, the Turkish Brigade repulsed a Chinese force three times its size, although the brigade was ultimately decimated by repeated attacks by North Koreans and Chinese.] In Seoul, men are working near a school that had been shot with cannon fire, and a small photograph shows the Hangang bridge which crossed the Han River after it had been collapsed on 28 June 1950 by the South Korean Army itself, which ended defence of Seoul but saved the army from attack. [The bridge was filled with 4,000 refugees when it was bombed, the South Korean government estimating that 800 people died in the blast. The South Korean Fifth Division was also cut off from its retreat path. At 11:00 am, the North Korean Army reached the bridge and captured the city of Seoul.] We also find two photographs of the Seoul Capitol building, which has since been demolished due to its association with Japanese occupation. A single photograph captures early stages of construction of the America-built Pin Tail bridge over the lower Imjin River, at this time being a simple pontoon bridge which connected the Belgian infantry battalion with Route 11, the 29th Brigade?'s main line of supply and communication. [In April 1951 the Chinese People's Volunteer Army attacked United Nations (UN) positions on the lower Imjin River in an attempt to recapture the South Korean capital Seoul. The Battle of the Imjin River took place in the region defended primarily by British forces of the 29th Infantry Brigade, consisting of three British and one Belgian infantry battalions supported by tanks and artillery. Despite being greater in number, the Chinese were halted.] In May 1951 at Sosa, a small town near Ascom City, a photograph shows a street with bombed buildings and a wrecked military water truck was recovered in the night hours. Another truck is recovered in much better condition. An American vehicle is being off loaded for assistance. From these images, it seems that recovery of damaged equipment was a large part of this brigade's purpose, and, presumably making necessary repairs to get them back into immediate service. Alongside a riverbed near Osan, the officer photographed large trucks that served as a radar station. Elsewhere, camps and mechanical shops are setup at Chonan, Uijeongbu, Osan, Tokchon, and Pyeongtaek being represented herein. The British 29th Independent Infantry Brigade, whose endeavours are seen in this album, saw action during the third Battle for Seoul in late December 1950 and in the Chinese Spring Offensive (the Battle of the Imjin River) in April 1951. In July 1951, it was re-organized as 29th British Infantry Brigade and absorbed into the 1st Commonwealth Division, the brigade finished its tour of duty in November 1951. The 29th Brigade was an infantry brigade unit of the British Army, formed in August 1914 as part of the 10th (Irish) Division, of the first wave of Kitchener's Army (K1). It saw service during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, being re-mustered in 1950 after the outbreak of the Korean War as 29th Independent Infantry Brigade to reinforce the United Nations war effort. Upon arriving in Korea, in December 1950, it comprised the 1st Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, 1st Battalion, the Gloucestershire Regiment, 1st Battalion, the Royal Ulster Rifles, 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars, C Squadron, 7th Royal Tank Regiment (specialised armour), 45 Field Regiment RA, 11 LAA Battery RA, and 170 Mortar Battery RA, plus supporting units. It also incorporated elements from non-British forces, including the Belgian United Nations Command. The brigade saw action during the third Battle for Seoul in late December 1950 and the Chinese Spring Offensive (the Battle of the Imjin River) in April 1951. In July 1951, it was re-organized as 29th British Infantry Brigade and absorbed into the 1st Commonwealth Division, the brigade finished its tour of duty in November 1951. The Government-General Building (1916-26), also known internationally as the "Seoul Capitol", was the chief administrative building in Keijo (English: Seoul) during Japanese rule in Korea and the seat of the Governor-General of Korea from 1926 until 1945. After independence the neoclassical building was the scene of numerous important events for the South Korean government, housing first the South Korean National Assembly, and later the National Museum of South Korea. As it was long felt to be a symbol of Japanese imperialism, and it impeded reconstruction of the Gyeongbokgung complex landmarks, it was demolished during 1995 to 1996. . Very Good.

        War or Peace

New York: The Macmillan Company 1950 - 8vo., blue cloth lettered in red; chipped dust jacket. First edition, first printing. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Phil Jessup, whose wise planning and sound execution provide good hope for lasting peace. With the high regard of John Foster Dulles, March 31, 1950," on the front endpaper. ---- Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice and veteran U.S. diplomat, served as a U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a member of the International Court of Justice at The Hague. He also served as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. Eisenhower's Secretary of State, Dulles had participated in The Hague Peace Conference and the 1946-49 Assemblies of the United Nations. In "War or Peace," Dulles discussed Jessup's major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. An extraordinary presentation copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1950 - The reminiscences of Dr. Cox commence with his adventures on Bicycles, initially the Boneshaker he rode in 1876 progressing to the High Wheeler, Ordinary (Penny Farthing) in 1886 (both in photos) and through to his first motor car in 1904 and a 1894 Panhard 7hp of the type that had won the very first City to City Races. Called 'Pretty Jane' she was the transport for two years and 10000 miles. She was replaced by 'Victorine' the New 15hp Panhard. Signed dedication to the Author's own Wife reads: " For my dear Wife. The perfect Companion and Helpmate. W.S.C. Xmas 1950" - Another period penned inscription reads To Margaret from Mrs Pendel. The book bears the Number 43 which maybe the particular number of this book from a very small numbered run.The many photographs incorporated are original prints 'tipped in' to the pages. 275 pages + approx 50 photographs affixed to plain pages. The book is Blue Leather and Cloth bound with Gilt embossed Titles and in VGC. I imagine you really won't find another! [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        8 letters signed.

Milan, 27 July 1949 through 16 February 1950. - Nine pages, on eight quarto and octavo leaves. In Italian. Occasional creases and minor isolated foxing, very good. Accompanied by typescript translations. Manzù here writes extensively to Marcelo de Ridder, gallery owner and art dealer in Buenos Aires, concerning the nuts and bolts of an exhibition of his works de Ridder is organizing for late 1949. Always polite, but frequently exasperated, Manzù deals with burdens he feels are de Ridder's responsibilities (customs, shipping, etc), and is justifiably upset when, on 27 December 1949, he writes: "La mia mostra si è aperta e chiusa a mia insaputa senza nessure sapere dagli organizzatori la minima notizia, e questo nonostante le mie risetute preghiere, alle quali non è mai stato risposto. Non ho avuto nemmeno il Catalogo della mostra. Di tutto questo sono veramente stupito, veda di avvicare a quel minimo di gentilezza informandoni almeno dove si trovarro ora le mie opere [.]" ("My exhibition has opened and closed unbeknownst to me, and without my having received the slightest notification from its organizers, despite my repeated requests which were never answered. I did not even receive a catalogue of the exhibition. I am truly amazed at this, could you try to at least have the courtesy to let me know where my works are now [.]", transl.). The 16 February 1950 letter is far more conciliatory and grateful, perhaps as a consequence of having received the exhibition documentation and photographs, with which he is pleased, as well as received proceeds so far of "two hundred thousand lire". - Manzù is most widely known for his public works of sculpture, including the bronze doors at St. Peter's Basilica and two reliefs for Rockefeller Center, but was accomplished and prolific in other media as well. During WWII, his anti-Fascist drawings forced him underground, and in 1968 he was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize for his public stance against Western policies in Southeast Asia.

Original full-length role portrait photograph of Callas as Anna Bolena at La Scala, signed in full, inscribed to Bill Scott, dated 1970.

With handstamp to verso: "Copyright by E. Piccagliani." 148 x 105 mm. . Maria Callas was the most famous and also the most glamorous opera singer of her time. Her fame was enhanced by her attractive physique, and her early death turned her into an almost mythical figure. Initially performing dramatic roles including most of Wagner's soprano parts, she later focused on the Italian belcanto repertory. "Of CallasÂ’s artistic pre-eminence there can be no doubt. Among her contemporaries she had the deepest comprehension of the Classical Italian style, the most musical instincts and the most intelligent approach. There was authority in all that she did on the stage and in every phrase that she uttered." Desmond Shawe-Taylor in Grove Music Online. Erio Piccagliani worked as a photographer at La Scala from 1950 to 1979. Bill Scott may have been the American voice actor (1920-1985).

        The Invisible Glass

New York: Greenberg. (1950). First. First edition. Octavo. Slight bumping and wear to spine ends, else about fine in rubbed and price-clipped very good dustwrapper with a few small nicks and tears. Laid in is a Typed Letter Signed ("Loren Wahl") to Dr. Noel J. Cortes dated in 1951, responding to Cortes' inquiry of the publisher inquiring about purchasing the manuscript of this novel; Wahl offers to discuss it with him. Wahl published a second novel in 1959, Confetti For Gino, under the name Lorenzo Madalena. Like John Horne Burns' The Gallery, The Invisible Glass is set among American service personnel serving in Italy during World War II. A doomed love story which breaks three taboos: love between men, love across the racial divide, and love between an officer and an enlisted man. Contemporary critics were dismissive of the novel's gay content, preferring instead to commend it (where they commended it at all) for its sympathetic and insightful handling of the role played by black servicemen during the war. A better than usual example of a very scarce title, one much more candid in its treatment of homosexuality than The Gallery, which it resembles. Slide, Lost Gay Novels, p. 46. .

        Der zweite Weltkrieg * 10 Bände, jeweils als H A L B F R A N Z B A N D / H A L B L E D E R - H a n d e i n b a n d
