Edge of Doom (Original Film Pressbook)

Los Angeles: Samuel Goldwyn Company / RKO Radio Pictures, 1950. Original pressbook for the 1950 film noir. Based on the 1949 novel by Leo Brady. Written for the screen by Philip Yordan and Ben Hecht. An RKO release that flopped at its premiere, so much that the producers at Goldwyn had Ben Hecht write framing scenes to be added to the wide release. Essential noir, with Catholic overtones and optimism, about an impoverished family and the depths to which a frustrated young man (Farley Granger) can sink, culminating in murder (Silver, et al.). 12 pages, with one insert (folded once), 12 x 18 inches, saddle stitched. Very Good plus, with a faint horizontal fold crease at the center of the wrapper and pages, a few short closed tears at the edges, light soil, and a tiny chip at one corner of the insert. Neibaur 252. Selby (1984) 122. Silver, p. 104. Spicer, p. 409.

        [Photo Album]: Florida Air Station

Key West, Florida. 1950s. A collection of 108 black and white photographs most measuring 3.5" x 4.5" from an American military base during the Korean War. Based on a single caption it would appear that at least some of the photographs were taken at the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. The assemblage documents the comings and goings on the naval air base with pilots working on equipment and posing in uniform on aircraft. Also pictured are midair photos of helicopters from the Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron 1 and aircraft carriers. Eight pictures show the wreckage in the aftermath of a plane crash. It has anecdotally been suggested these are the work of Edward Steichen, although we could find no evidence to support this. A splendid and varied group of photos showing the Navy at work. .

Ball from 1941 World Series later signed by Hall of Famer Dizzy Dean

[Detroit], August 1, 1950. "Baseball Signed “Dizzy Dean.” Signature, light, 2/3 strength. Toned, scuffed, surface tear. No markings visible, unable to identify manufacturer. Handwritten in unidentified hand on side panel “1941 / World Series / N.Y. Yanks / and / Brooklyn Dodgers” so this apparently was a ball used at the ’41 World Series. Handwritten in another hand, near Dean’s signature, most probably indicating when the Hall of Fame pitcher signed it, “August / 1st 1950.”On October 5, 1941, Brooklyn had won game four of the 1941 World Series 4-3 when, with two out and no one on base, it seemed that pitcher Hugh Casey had struck out Tommy Henrich ending the game, tying the World Series at two games each. But the ball got past Dodger catcher Mickey Owen and Henrich was safe at first base. Then DiMaggio singled, Keller doubled, Dickey walked, Gordon doubled, and Rizzuto walked before Murphy grounded out to end the inning. The Dodgers were retired 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth and the Yankees had won the game 7-4, giving them a commanding 3-1 game lead. New York won game 5 and the 1941 World Series the next day.Dizzy Dean was a sportscaster for the New York Yankees in 1950. On August 1, 1950, the Yankees lost to the Tigers 7-3 in Detroit."

"Visions of Gerard". Corrected typescript signed

1950. Signed in pencil "John Kerouac" at the end of the last page. 4 pages, single spaced carbon typescript on onion-skin paper, with extensive manuscript revisions by Kerouac on the first page, and a few on the others, totaling 45 words in his hand. This draft typescript, identified by Kerouac on the first page as a "short short", is the germ of the novel of the same title, and probably the earliest extant fragment of Kerouac's "Legend of Duluoz". In our typescript Kerouac tells the stories of his saintly eight year-old brother Gerard who died in 1926, when Jack was four years-old: Gerard feeding birds which flocked to his windowsill, and his rescue of a mouse, which his cat then ate. Here Kerouac uses the name Daoulas as his family name; connecting this draft with his unfinished Michael Daoulas book, written in 1945; he'd also used that name before settling on "Martin" for the family in "The Town and the City" and before adopting a more French sounding version "Duluoz". In a lengthy confessional letter to Neal Cassady, dated 28 December 1950 - Jan. 3, 1951, Kerouac tells these same stories, writing of the cat and mouse story: "My mother heard every word of it; the text has been translated to me a million times, now it's garbled. If I could only have heard his exact words. Don't you see, Neal, I never told you, I believe my brother was a saint...I could not live without this confession". On stylistic grounds our typescript appears to precede this letter which was among his first experiments in spontaneous prose, although identical sentences appear in both. Folded twice as for mailing. Provenance: Jonathan Goodwin - Maurice Neville.

        A DROP OF DEW.

[Tokyo 1950, Hokuseido]. Buff boards, slipcase, very clean,. 21 x 27.5 cm., double signed by Kazuo Koizumi Hearn's son,. silver flecked paper covers, gold stamped, deckle edge paper.. FIRST AND ONLY LIMITED NUMBERED EDITION OF 350 DOUBLE SIGNED. The work was inspired by Hearn's son, Kazuo Koizumi [Hearn] as a tribute to his father. The work was then meticulously designed, printed and executed by the publisher friend at the Hokuseido Press. Hokuseido had published a large amount of Hearn's writings since Hearn's death in 1904, and was a close friend of the Koizumi family. * While Kazuo's name only appears at the end in the limitation colophon being Hearn's son, he sanctioned this by signing it for each of the 350 copies issued. * Printed on hand-made watermarked Japanese vellum paper with Hearn's crest. Bound in gold-stamped title on the covers, in decorated boards with silver flecked Washi paper. Contains 10 page facsimile of Hearn 's manuscript with his cinnabar Hanko [chop] seals. With an important four-page English postscript by his son, Kazuo [Hearn] Koizumi. The work was 21 x 27.5 cm. in size and is contained in a buff boards slip-case with title on the cover, else unadorned. * The "CERTIFICATE" or colophon page cites the fact that this book was LIMITED TO 350 NUMBERED COPIES, printed by Hokuseido Press, Tokyo. Below the stamped number, there is Kazuo Koizumi's brush-signed signature in Japanese, along with two of his square cinnabar Hanko [chop] seals. * A special copy contains his English signature along side the Japanese signature, which was numbered one [of 350 in all], and was a special presentation copy to a friend. The balance are otherwise numbered, signed in Japanese and with the two seals in red. Ours being this one is numbered:"1" [of 350] indicating a special personal copy presented to a friend. Double signed by Kazuo Koizumi, the compiler, Hearn's son. * CONDITION: This is an excellent copy, with out any flaws to speak of, in the original matching slip-case, which has some very tiny points of wear, but solid as issued. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: Not in : P.D & Ione Perkins: LAFCADIO HEARN A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HIS WRITINGS: * BAL 8050 * Color scans can be sent by email.         The Town & the City.

New York: Harcourt, Brace & Co. 8vo (20.5 cm; 8"). [3] ff., 499, [1] pp.. (1950) First edition of Kerouac's first book. An advance review copy, this distinction being printed on its wrapper; there apparently was no distributed "proof copy" for it. A fictionalized account of the author's life and family and friends, the novel is somewhat conventional but contains the seeds and hints of things that will mature, expand, and dominate in his later writings. Publisher's printed salmon paper wrappers, rear cover with a slim crease to paper (in production?); a fresh, unworn copy. Cryptic pencilled characters (totalling 13) on endpapers and rear endpaper with one very short tear. Housed in a quarter green morocco clamshell box.

Vernon E. Duroe's Photographs of New York City and Upstate New York, together with Photographs of the Duroe Family

[New York] 1950 - A large collection upwards of 1200 black and white photographs, the bulk of which were taken by the Brooklyn-based photographer and teacher, Vernon Everett Duroe. Born in 1872 on the family farm in Norwich, New York, Duroe developed an early interest in both portrait and landscape photography, and was an active member of the photography department at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences. This collection of his prints divides roughly into three parts: fine art photographs (some of which were published in the early 1920s); landscape and architectural studies; and family snapshots and portraits. Most range in size from 5" x 7" to 11" x 14", with several hundred smaller size images. Included are gelatin silver, platinum, albumen, and matte collodion prints, several of which are identical images printed in variant tones and sizes. Also included are a few tintypes, cartes de visites, etc., and several dozen cabinet cards. Most of the prints in the collection are loose, with about a quarter mounted (on original commercially produced cardboard mounts or Duroe's custom-made mounts, or in folded paper portfolios). With few exceptions, most prints are undated and unmarked. Overall very good or better, with some light to moderate curling among some of the loose prints. A detailed list of the photographs is available upon request.

Cfr. Cramer 59; Monod 10794.(vedi riproduz.)

Washington, Wallace Simpson, Duchess of Windsor, Theodore Roosevelt, John Philip Sousa, Ezra Pound, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Dreiser, William H. Taft, Auguste Rodin, Jack London, and Many Others

1950. other. Very Good. Large group of 170 letters and other documents written to and collected by early 20th century editor and publisher Ralph Tracy Hale (1880-1951). Mr. Hale first worked for Bobbs Merrill (1904-1908), then Small, Maynard, (1908-1919) and finally as partner in Hale, Cushman, and Flint (1927-1947). Along with his editing efforts, Hale taught, wrote articles for periodicals, and edited books on Vermeer and Rodin. With Robert Bartlett, he co-wrote 'The Last Voyage of the Karluk', an account of the disastrous Canadian Arctic expedition claimed the lives of eleven men. Hale had a personal interest in polar exploration, and corresponded with Vilhjalmur Stefansson, Canadian explorer and leader of the Karluk expedition. He was also an editor for poets John Whitcomb Riley and Madison Cawein. As demonstrated by this collection, Mr. Hale collaborated and corresponded with an array of writers, poets, politicians, artists, and other public figures, including Theodore Roosevelt, Jack London, Orville Wright, Booker T. Washington, Theodore Dreiser, and William H. Taft. The letters date between 1900 and 1950, and are housed in a hardcover green cloth autograph book which Hale kept, or loose in backed mylar sleeves.         Dubonnet. Vin Tonique au Quinquina.

Original lithographed poster. Signed A.M. Cassandre [19]32. Printed c. 1950. 66x45 cm.. Printer brand cut off in lower margin. Cassandre became successful enough that with the help of partners he was able to set up his own advertising agency called Alliance Graphique, serving a wide variety of clients during the 1930s. He is perhaps best known for his posters advertising travel, for clients such as the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. His creations for the Dubonnet wine company were among the first posters designed in a manner that allowed them to be seen by occupants in moving vehicles. His posters are memorable for their innovative graphic solutions and their frequent denotations to such painters as Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. In addition, he taught graphic design at the École des Arts Décoratifs and then at the École d'Art Graphique. [Wikipedia]

        [The Chronicles of Narnia:]

London: Geoffrey Bles [and] The Bodley Head,, 1950-1956. The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The Horse and His Boy; The Magician's Nephew; The Last Battle. 7 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in full morocco, various colours, titles and pictorial centre tools to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, floral endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a dark blue leather entry slipcase. With colour frontispieces and black and white illustrations by Pauline Baynes. An excellent set. All first editions, first impressions. A complete set of the much acclaimed Narnia series. "The immediate inspiration for 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' was a series of nightmares that Lewis had had about Lions. More seriously, he was concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction trilogy... The Narnia novels are not allegorical; they are entirely in keeping with the belief, shared by Lewis and his close friend and Oxford colleague Tolkien, that stories in themselves, especially of the mythical type, can give spiritual nourishment without imparting abstract meaning... As Naomi Lewis has written, the books are 'intoxicating' to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th century author".

FIVE EARLY APPEARANCES IN SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE - 1950-1953

Triangle Publications, Inc. 1950-1953, New York - Five large quarto issues (33.75cm); photo-illustrated wrappers; 144, 172, 128, 192, 200pp; illus. Publication sequence as follows: November, 1950; May, 1951; October, 1952; March, 1953; April, 1953. Light wear overall, with creasing and short tears to extremities, and minute loss to spine ends on three issues; Nov.1950 issue with dust-soil and foxing to front wrapper and text edges; Very Good-Very Good+. After receiving 50 rejection slips from an assortment of publications before a single piece of her creative writing was accepted, Plath was informed during her final term in high school that Seventeen would publish her story "And Summer Will Not Come Again" in their August, 1950 issue. The magazine would be the first mainstream publication where Plath's poetry and short fiction would be exposed, printing her work on eight occasions between 1950-1953. Her contributions in the present group include "Ode to a Bitten Plum," "a short, Keats-inspired poem in which the narrator, contemplating a plum, decides its seed represents more abstract concepts like time and eternity" (November 1950, p.104); "Den of Lions," a story based on her failed love affair with a boyfriend while attending Smith College (May 1951, p.127, 144-145); "It's All Yours" (story, October 1952, p.76, 100-104); "The Suitcases Are Packed Again" (poem, March 1953, p.91); and "Carnival Nocturne" (poem, April 1953, p.127). An attractive and uncommon group of early appearances. (See Alexander, Paul. Rough Magic: A Biography of Sylvia Plath, p.60, 65-77).

        Savrola.

Monaco: A La Voile Latine,, 1950. Roman. Traduit de l'Anglais par Judith Paley. Illustré par André Collot de bois gravés en couleurs et en noir. Quarto (280 × 225 mm) Sheets loose in light card wraps within pale grey card chemise in matching card slip-case as issued. Original glassine jacket on the wraps, and the suite of plates "en noir" in the original glassine sleeve. Coloured wood-engraved frontispiece, and 22 similar half-page head-pieces, tail-pieces in black and white; original pencil and water-colour drawings for two of the head-pieces window-mouted in light card and loosely inserted, together with an additional suite of the illustrations in black and white. The slip-case a little tanned, slightly rubbed and starting on the joins, spine of the chemise similarly tanned, some offsetting from the illustrations, but overall very good. First edition thus, the second French edition, limited to 950, this number 12, one of twelve copies on "pur chiffon à la forme", accompanied by two of the original drawings, signed in pencil, and a suite of the illustrations "en noir". Far from Churchill's finest hour in literary terms; "He devoted only one paragraph in My Early Life to Savrola, concluding: "I have consistently urged my friends to abstain from reading it" " (Rose, The Literary Churchill, p.68). However, this edition is widely considered to be "the most elegant of all Churchill 'A' titles" (Cohen, "The Bibliography of 'Savrola'", in Finest Hour, 74, 1992, p.33), Cohen further describing this as a "magnificently illustrated edition". And Langworth stresses its importance to collectors: "The finest presentation of Savrola Â… this magnificent edition is overlooked by many collectors because it is not in English. They are missing a great deal. No serious Churchill library is complete without it". André Collot, the artist who provided the stylish suite of illustrations for this edition - which were in the St. Augustine's Press re-issue, published in association with the Churchill Center in 2003 - was a highly thought of illustrator who worked on editions of such classics as Kipling's Jungle Book, The Three Musketeers, Letters from my Mill, and Barbusse's La Feu, but is probably best known for his sometimes quite brutal erotica. Having utterly disowned Savrola in the past, on receipt of his copy of the present edition Churchill wrote to Collot expressing himself "surprised and greatly pleased to have received the beautiful edition of my little novel of sixty years ago Â… I am glad to find it is still alive. It will have an honoured place in my library" (Finest Hour, 120, 2003, p.41). An excellent copy of the tête de tirage of this superb edition.

        Six Modern One-Act Plays

London: University of London Press 1950, 1950. FIRST EDITION, thus. SIGNED BY JOHN LENNON. Octavo, pp.160. Publisher's softcovers. Some soiling and associated reading wear. An interesting school text-book borrowed by Lennon whilst a student at Quarry Bank School, Liverpool. Lennon has signed the lending stamp to the inside cover 'J[ohn] W[inston] Lennon, IVC', and dated this '1955'. The details have been crossed through by the subsequent reader in 1961-2. This signed library book represents an especially early autograph from the future Beatle, at this time aged just 14; 'The Quarrymen' band was formed by John aged 15 and was named after the high school noted within this volume. Music aside, the subject of the book has a clear link to his later career as a dramatist; Lennon co-wrote the play 'A Spaniard In the Works' with Victor Spinetti and starred in the film 'How I Won the War'. An important item, accompanied by a statement of provenence from Paul Wane one of the world's most respected Beatles specialists.
