        Progressive Architecture

      - New York - Reinhold Publishing Co. 1950 - A continuous 23 year run of selected sections from one of the 20th century's most significant architectural magazines, uniformly bound by Bayntun Riviere of Bath. The sections included from the magazine are those concerning the design of either real, planned, or hypothetical buildings. Sections such as the 'newsletter' or 'manufacturers' literature' are not included. Thus there is a streamlined focus on design content. The relevant sections from each month's magazine are bound together by year, with each volume running from January to December as one would expect. The pagination istruncated as a result: for most months the pagination will run from roughly 50-120. Thus there are twelve separately paginated sections in each volume, corresponding loosely to those figures. Replete with illustrations, both photographic and draughted. Colour photos become more frequent from the 1957 volume onwards. There is a general American focus, but the wider world is not neglected. Every imaginable sort of building is covered, from schools to hotels to offices and houses. Contemporary design is rigorously and intelligently discussed in the accompanying articles, which situate the featured buildings within their wider social and practical context. New materials and technology are explored, and ambitious theoretical designs are analysed. The architectural discussions, by their very nature, provide a fascinating angle on the wider cultural, economic, and political world of their particular year. For example, one will find the design and utility of bomb shelters discussed at the height of the cold war, and then 'omnibuildings' eagerly anticipated in the late 60s. In 1969 there is a feature titled 'Machine Art Past and Technology Art Present', while in 1970 the influence of modern technology on the design of movie theatres is explored. A beautifully boundunparallelled primary source for the history of architecture, as well as for socio-economic history, in the midto late twentieth century. Condition: In half morocco by Bayntun Riviere. Externally excellent with just the occasional light mark to the boards. The 1955 volume has a small bookseller's stamp to the front pastedown. Internally, generally clean and bright, and firmly bound. Overall: FINE [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Scamp (Inscribed And Signed By The Author In The Year of Publication)

The First UK printing published by John Lehmann in 1950.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD condition. There is some pushing to the spine ends with some light bumping to the lower corners. The orange colouring of the spine has faded but the green faux label remains bright. The covers are lightly marked in places. There is light toning of the text block and end-papers.Light creasing to the pages in places.A couple of pages have some small splash marks to the page edges. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near FINE condition.A little toning to the spine with some mild edge wear affecting the spine ends. The edges are a little nicked with one small closed tear to the upper cover. The rear panel remains remarkably clean for its age.The JOHN MINTON designed wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival protector. The wrapper is incredibly scarce to find in any condition and this is certainly one of the nicest examples that we have ever handled to date. One of the iconic wrapper designs of the 1950s! The book has been Inscribed and Signed by the Author to the title page: 'To Opal, from Roland Camberton with best wishes and affection, October-1950'. Roland Camberton (aka Henry Cohen) wrote only two novels before disappearing into relative obscurity. This was despite winning the prestigious Somerset Maugham Award for the title 'Scamp'.The author Iain Sinclair has been largely responsible for championing the recent revival in Camberton's works which are now back in print.A highly collectible very scarce title.

The Second World War, six volumes written out in manuscript longhand

Contemporary quarter leather; volumes one and three large 4to (49 x 41cm), volume 2 folio (47 x 30cm). The six volumes of the Second World War, written out in manuscript longhand in two large day books and a ledger, by an unidentified hand, probably dating from the 1950s. A right-sloping very neat hand in blue or black fountain pen with occasional red. An unabridged transcription (except some sources typed on separate loose sheets), written on both sides of approximately 800 leaves of the three ledgers, final volume following straight on with unabridged transcriptions of four other of Churchill's works, 'My Early Life', 'Thoughts and Adventures', 'Great Contemporaries' and 'Step by Step'. Together with a folder of related typed leaves supplying many of the quoted sources for which coded references are left in the manuscript. A unique Churchill item, which could be compared with Borges' story 'Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote'. Borges' "review" describes Menard's efforts to go beyond a mere "translation" of Don Quixote by immersing himself so thoroughly in the work as to be able to actually "re-create" it, line for line, in the original 17th-century Spanish. Pierre Menard is often used to raise questions and discussion about the nature of authorship, appropriation and interpretation. This manuscript raises questions of authorship and more particularly motivation. The Second World War alone totals over 1.5 million words and the motivation to rewrite all this verbatim in longhand defies all logic. The handwriting is not Churchill's, nor any of his known secretaries, according to the Churchill Archives, Cambridge. The ledgers came to light around 15 years ago during a large house clearance near York. There are two clues as to who the author may be, both possibly in the same hand as the manuscript itself: The name 'Philip H. [?] Richings' appears on the front free end paper of the second day book, and a three-page manuscript poem ('An Ode to Sir Barnes [Wallis]'), included with the folder of typed quoted sources, is initialled 'P.H.R.' at the end. The two ledgers have some soiling and wear, with a printed stationer's labels of Arthur Wrigley, Leeds. The middle volume is damped stained to the foot and a little frayed.

1950. Zusammen 13 SS. auf 9 Bll. Gr.-4to und qu.-8vo. An seinen Biographen Otto Conzelmann, den Herausgeber zahlreicher Dix betreffender Werke, vielfach in Ausstellungs- bzw. Veröffentlichungsfragen. A) "[...] Dr. Passarge [d. i. Das wäre also / I. die Nationalgalerie / II. Moritzburg in Halle und III. Mannheim. Das gibt auch wieder eine komplizierte Organisationsarbeit [...]" (18. I. 1950). - B) "[...] (7. I. 1955). (16. I. 1967). - G) Den Versand einiger Werke betreffend: "[...] B.         29 autograph messages and one autograph letter signed ("Dix"), two of which have hand drawings. N. p., [c. 1950].

1950. Various formats. Highly perfunctory letter, probably to the violinist Hanni Rocco (1896-1990), whom Dix had met in the 1940s in the Höri artists' colony and who had lived in Hemmenhofen with her friend Maria Proells until 1953. Dix informs her that she can obtain his work from the Klihm Gallery and requests her not to bother him with trifling matters, in view of his laziness and copious correspondence. - The messages, most of them rather short, are probably to Roccos companion, the pianist and painter Maria Proelss (1892-1962), and concern forthcoming visits, various requests, etc. (with occasional references to "Miss Rocco"). Some of these are written on clipped slips of paper (including 3 military letters and 2 fragments of cigarette boxes); one postcard bears the drawing of a little girl with a flower.
