The Marihuana Story (Collection of 15 still photographs from the 1950 film)

Sonny Amusement Enterprises, Inc. / S. A. C. L., Los Angeles 1950 - Collection of 15 vintage black-and-white still photographs from the 1950 Spanish-Argentine film. The financial success of the 1949 exploitation film "She Shoulda Said No," a morality tale involving the use of marijuana, prompted distributors to import this film from Argentina for distribution in the US. It was a success on the exploitation circuit (drive-ins, grindhouse cinema, etc.), and was even entered at Cannes.Pablo Urioste (Lagar) is a respected surgeon forced to experience a nightmarish world after his wife, a marijuana addict, dies in a nightclub. He unwisely elects to investigate on his own, and through flashbacks he tells his story to the police, about how he was ultimately drugged, beaten, blackmailed, and currently experiencing some bad-trip flashbacks. Klimovsky founded Argentina's first film club in 1929, directed several Spanish horror films (including "La noche de Walpurgis," said to have started the Spanish horror boom of the 1970s), an 1954 Argentine film called "Witchcraft," and the entire 1979 TV series "La barraca."Set in Mexico. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm).         A Bibliography of John Dos Passos

Normandie House, Chicago 1950 - Octavo (23 cm), pp. 94, [2]. Signed and inscribed by Dos Passos to his editor at Lovell Thompson on free front endpaper: "For Lovell & K- When you get sick of it you can turn it over to the research dep't of Houghton Mifflin - it's gotten up by a very nice young guy in Chicago who seems to have done a good job. Yrs ever, Dos." Limited edition (#12/365). Brown cloth with gilt spine titling and Dos Passos facsimile signature on upper board, deckle edge. Includes Addenda of periodical articles tipped in on recto of final leaf. Boards have mostly light edge and corner wear and some rubbing, with two indentations at top of upper board. Glue from Addenda has bled through onto verso of final leaf.A unique association copy. Dos Passos was called "Dos" by his friends, and often signed books to them in this manner. Thompson, who was head of HM's trade division for most of the 42 years he spent there, was called a "brilliant conceptualizer" by his colleagues upon his passing. In addition to Dos Passos, he worked with Bernard deVoto, Anya Seton, John Kenneth Galbraith, and Andrew and Betsy Wyeth. In his introduction to this volume, Dos Passos reflects that "It's hard to imagine what anybody could possibly say to introduce a volume of bibliography . listing his own works. It's like asking a man to engrave the plate on his coffin after he's been laid away in it by the undertaker." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Progressive Architecture

      - New York - Reinhold Publishing Co. 1950 - A continuous 23 year run of selected sections from one of the 20th century's most significant architectural magazines, uniformly bound by Bayntun Riviere of Bath. The sections included from the magazine are those concerning the design of either real, planned, or hypothetical buildings. Sections such as the 'newsletter' or 'manufacturers' literature' are not included. Thus there is a streamlined focus on design content. The relevant sections from each month's magazine are bound together by year, with each volume running from January to December as one would expect. The pagination istruncated as a result: for most months the pagination will run from roughly 50-120. Thus there are twelve separately paginated sections in each volume, corresponding loosely to those figures. Replete with illustrations, both photographic and draughted. Colour photos become more frequent from the 1957 volume onwards. There is a general American focus, but the wider world is not neglected. Every imaginable sort of building is covered, from schools to hotels to offices and houses. Contemporary design is rigorously and intelligently discussed in the accompanying articles, which situate the featured buildings within their wider social and practical context. New materials and technology are explored, and ambitious theoretical designs are analysed. The architectural discussions, by their very nature, provide a fascinating angle on the wider cultural, economic, and political world of their particular year. For example, one will find the design and utility of bomb shelters discussed at the height of the cold war, and then 'omnibuildings' eagerly anticipated in the late 60s. In 1969 there is a feature titled 'Machine Art Past and Technology Art Present', while in 1970 the influence of modern technology on the design of movie theatres is explored. A beautifully boundunparallelled primary source for the history of architecture, as well as for socio-economic history, in the midto late twentieth century. Condition: In half morocco by Bayntun Riviere. Externally excellent with just the occasional light mark to the boards. The 1955 volume has a small bookseller's stamp to the front pastedown. Internally, generally clean and bright, and firmly bound. Overall: FINE [Attributes: Hard Cover]
