1939. Stalinsk: Iubil. komissiia po organizatsii prazdnovaniia 10-letiia Kuznets. metallurg. zavoda im. Stalina i goroda Stalinska, 1939. 288 pp.: ill., 2 portraits. 25x18,5 cm. In original red cloth with mounted photograph and gilt lettering on the front cover and spine (faded). Slightly bumped, small ink stain on t.p., otherwise mint. First and only edition. One of 10 000 copies. Extremely rare. Design by Buzovertov and Popov, photographs by Burakov and Rukavishnikov. A triumphal edition published in the 10th anniversary of a major coal mining and industrial center in the 1930s - Kuznetsk Iron and Steel Plant - and settlement around it. Since 1929 workers were bringing to life a project of a huge metal plant under Kuznetsk town. Being classics of that time, a gardencity for workers was founded nearby construction the same year. The newly formed socialist settlement increased and merged with the old one, being renamed together into Stalinsk (the name was changed to Novokuznetsk in 1961). The founder of the plant and its first director was a revolutionary Sergei Frankfurt (1888-1937). In 1935 he had written a book 'Birth of Steel and Man' about this industrial site but in 1936 he was executed - no wonder that our edition kept silence of his name. Except for that, the book is full of different names: authors of the articles were blast furnace workers, steelworkers, engineers, newspaper editors, teachers, and others. The curious point is that people of Novokuznetsk considered Mayakovsky their countryman because his poem 'A Story of Kuznetskstroi and People of Kuzn … [Click Below for Full Description]

OSHIMA, Shotaro.
Tokyo: The Hokuseido Press, 1939. Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine in black with two decorative red stars, untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Foot of spine gently bumped, slight toning to endpapers. A near-fine copy in the very good jacket, spine darkened, a little toned and soiled, minor wear and creasing to corners. First edition, first printing, number 177 of 350 issued copies, presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "Mr Laurence Binyon With all good wishes from the Author, October 25, 1939". Loosely inserted are two letters (and washi paper envelope) to Binyon: one an autograph letter from Oshima, dated October 27, 1939; the other a typed letter signed from W. B. Yeats, dated July 5, 1938. Shotaro Oshima was W. B. Yeats's principal advocate in Japan, author of many publications about him, both in English and Japanese, and founder of the Yeats Society of Japan in 1965. The present items relate to Oshima's visiting a frail Yeats (1865-1939) at his home, when Yeats gave Oshima the enclosed typed letter of introduction to fellow English poet Laurence Binyon (1869-1943). In his letter, the Japanese poet explains to Binyon: "I am taking the liberty of sending you under separate cover a copy of my 'Poems: Among Shapes and Shadows'. I am afraid that they are rather badly written as I have some difficulty in expressing myself in good English. But I hope that you will find something of interest in my book. And I shall be very much obliged if you kindly give me some remark upon my poems, because it is the first and laborious attempt for me to write verse … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILLIAM FAULKNER
1939. Covers darkened near edges, with somet paper loss at bottom & corners; spine age-faded with some fraying at top and bottom of spine; no internal damage. Published by Random House (New York 1939). First edition. Hardbound, with wood-grain-patterned paper sides and rust cloth back. In the binding of the 250-copy limited edition, this copy lacks the tipped-in signed limitation page. The covers are darkened near the edges, with some paper loss at the bottom and the corners, and the spine is age-faded with some fraying at the top and bottom of the spine; no internal damage. Good. Faulkner's moving novel of flight and refuge, later published under his original title, If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem, The Wild Palms tells two interwoven stories. "The Wild Palms" and "Old Man" alternate chapters, each telling a different, but equally captivating tale of a relationship between a man and a woman. "The Wild Palms" ends with one of literature's darkest closing lines, "Between grief and nothing, I will take grief." "For range of effect, philosophical weight, originality of style, variety of characterization, humor, and tragic intensity, [Faulkner's works] are without equal in our time and country." Robert Penn Warren "He is the greatest artist the South has produced. . . . Indeed, through his many novels and short stories, Faulkner fights out the moral problem which was repressed after the nineteenth century [yet] for all his concern with the South, Faulkner was actually seeking out the nature of man. Thus we must turn to him for that continuity of moral purpose which made for greatnes … [Click Below for Full Description]

Einstein, Albert, German-born physicist and Nobel laureate (1879-1955).
Princeton, 2 March, 1939. 4to. One page, 254 x 203mm, on Institute for Advanced Study letterhead. In German on the prospects of helping the maverick physicist Felix Ehrenhaft emigrate to America. Einstein notes that 'this case of Ehrenhaft is difficult'; Ehrenhaft's brother-in-law Arthur Schindler, a professor at the University of Iowa, may be best placed to help him: 'I myself have given so many affidavits in recent times that I must already shudder at the number of current cases. The case of Ehrenhaft is moreover such a responsibility, as one cannot think what he could start out on here'. The atomic phyicist Felix Ehrenhaft (1879-1952) was a professor of experimental physics in Vienna from 1920 until his expulsion by the Nazis in 1938. Until recently he and Einstein had enjoyed a very warm friendship, but the slightly cool tone of Einstein's letter reflects a growing alienation between the two, prompted by Ehrenhaft's increasingly erratic and extreme views. Ehrenhaft spent the war years in America, before returning to the University of Vienna in 1946. Provenance: by descent from Paul S. Epstein.

Einstein, Albert, German-born physicist and Nobel laureate (1879-1955).
Princeton, 9 May, 1939. 4to. One page, 280 x 218 mm, on personal blindstamped letterhead. In German. 'A paper that is especially close to my heart'. Einstein has heard a 'rumbling' that a general cultural department is to be set up at CalTech, and he accordingly recommends Rudolf Kayser, 'a Germanist and cultural historian'. Rather pessimistically, he adds 'I am constantly writing such official letters rather than personal ones, but perhaps it?s no different for you. And even so one so rarely succeeds in securing the right position for someone'. He concludes with reference to an enclosure (no longer present) of 'one of my own papers which lies especially close to my heart. Show it also to Tolman'. The paper referred to is probably Einstein's 'Stationary system with spherical symmetry consisting of many gravitating masses' (Annals of Mathematics (ser. 2), 40, 922?936), his only publication of that year. Richard Tolman (1881-1948) was professor of physical chemistry and mathematical physics at CalTech: in his later years he worked extensively on thermodynamics in relativistic systems. Somewhat disingenuously, Einstein omits to mention in his recommendation of Rudolf Kayser that Kayser was also his son-in-law, having been married to his stepdaughter Ilse (who had died in 1934). Kayser had been the editor of Die Neue Rundschau, one of the most important literary magazines in Germany (publishing Thomas Mann, Herman Hesse, and Stephen Zweig), before he was forced into exile, arriving in New York in 1935. He had also been instrumental in smuggling Einstein?s papers out of Berl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Steinbeck, John
The Viking Press, New York. First edition, with "First Published in April 1939" on copyright page and first edition notice on the front flap of the dust jacket. Octavo, original beige cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some light shelfwear. Jacket design by Elmer Hader. A very sharp example. "The Grapes of Wrath is the kind of art that’s poured out of a crucible in which are mingled pity and indignation Its power and importance do not lie in its political insight but in its intense humanity [It] is the American novel of the season, probably the year, possibly the decade" (Clifton Fadiman). It is the basis for the 1940 John Ford directed film, bearing the same name starring Henry Fonda. It is widely considered as one of the greatest American films of all time. In 1989, this film was one of the first 25 films to be selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Listed by Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of the twentieth century. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

John Atherton
1939. The poster, which displays surrealist elements as observed by the burnt orange background and a blue floating earth, was created for the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. The poster, by John Atherton features Lady Liberty holding the symbols of the 1939 World’s Fair, the Trylon and Perisphere as well as Earth in her lap against an orange background. The Trylon and Persisphere were designed by Wallace K. Harrison and Jacques-Andre Foulioux and were used to showcase the futuristic design that the Fair aimed for. The official colors of the fair were blue and orange and clearly used in Atherton’s poster. The 1939 World’s Fair took place on 1,216 acres of land in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and is noted in history as the second most expensive world’s fair of all time. The fair, themed "Building the World of Tomorrow" opened on April 30th 1939 with 206,000 people in attendance from all over the world. Most significant from the Fair, the former RCA President used the occasion of the Grand Opening to introduce television to the masses. Another popular event of the fair was the exhibition for the Westinghouse Time Capsule which is not to be opened for another 5,000 years containing writings by Albert Einstein and Thomas Mann, copies of Life Magazine, camel cigarettes and a Mickey mouse watch (Wikipedia). John Atherton (1900 – 1952) was an American graphic designer, painter and illustrator. Having studied at College of the Pacific and California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, Atherton, as a student, worked in a number of art studios where he acquired the knowledge to furth … [Click Below for Full Description]

QANTAS] Robey, George and Blanche; aka Sir George Edward Wade
1939. An album containing many photographs of the voyage made by Robey, known as the "Prime Minister of Mirth" and his wife Blanche by ship to Australia in 1939, with return journey via airplane (Imperial Airways), necessitated by the beginning of the Second World War. The album concludes with the Robeys emergency trip back to London. The album opens with large b&w photographs of the happy departure, hand captioned by Mrs. Robey. She writes, "G & I on board at Tilbury (Strathallan) en route to Australia, July 1939", above a large image of the couple smiling and waving from the deck. This is followed by 2 more images of Mrs. Robey on the HMS Rodney, "B. R. with Captain & Officers, taken by G. R. early 30ties (sic)". There are many amusing original snap shots (some with hand written captions) of George larking about in Australia, posing with emu, kangaroos ("kangaroo & baby in pouch, Koala Farm, Sydney, Sept. 1929"), parrots, and visiting natural sites such as Mt. Dandenong Observatory. Studio shots include: Australian cockatoos; felling gum tree; laughing jackass kookaburra; dairy herd; platypus; lyre bird; flowering gum; and a signed photograph entitled, "The Fairies Tree, Carved by Ola Cohn" (signed Ola Cohn in ink below the caption). Ola Cohn (1892 - 1964) was a noted Australian sculptor and philanthropist, best known for the Fairies' Tree in the Fitzroy Gardens which she sculpted in the early 1930s and dedicated to the children of Melbourne. There is a wide array of documentation from the trip, including early Qantas Airways papers, some dated after the declaration of wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Budapest: Printed by Pester Lloyd/ Kiss Gyorgy, 1939. Softcover. near fine. Small quarto. 9 1/4 x 6". 6pp. Staple-bound. This pamphet is comprised of the entire printed text, in English, of the Antisemitic "Second Jewish Law", enacted by the Hugarian parliament on May 5th 1939. This was likely printed as a supplement to the Pester Lloyd, the leading German-laguage newspaper in Hungary (1854-1945). The Second Jewish Law, here referred to as "The New Hungarian Jewish Bill", is divided into 21 provisions, and for the first time strictly defined who was considered a "Jew". After this first section, defining Jews according to the law, the bill continues in the other sections to detail even more restrictions on Hungarian Jews in terms of professions, further amending and modifying the quotas and regulations first laid out and defined in the previously enacted "First Jewish Law" of May 29th 1938. Dicussed are banning or restricing Jews from serving or working in a wide rage of feilds including government, art, entertainment, law, medicine, engeneering and the press among many others. Text in English. In near fine condition overall. Extremely scarce. Protected by modern mylar. *The Pester Lloyd (originally printed from 1854-1945), was known as among the few German-language newspapers to openly criticise Nazi antisemitic policies, considering that it was outside the influence of the Third Reich until the late 1930s.

Dorothea Lange
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1939. First edition (first printing). Blue cloth with gold lettering on the cover and spine, in a very good example of the (probable) second-issue dust jacket with the Voltaire quote on the rear panel. The jacket shows edgewear and is missing small chips along the top and bottom edge. The blank rear jacket flap is missing a four-by-four-inch triangle from the bottom corner. A note on the two variant dust jackets, one with a Voltaire quote and the other with advertisements for other books from the publisher: The (probable) first issue jacket with ads is often referred to as having an ad for Mein Kampf, which it does, but that is likely irrelevant. The publisher had been selling Hitler's book in English translation for a year at the time. The copyright for American Exodus was filed at the Library of Congress on Dec. 29, 1939, and the deposit copies arrived in Washington, DC, in early January 1940. The back cover of the jacket with ads has a listing for Your Jewish Neighbor. An American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion Dorothea Lange. First Edition 158 pages. 7-3/4 by 10-1/4 inches. One of the most significant works to come out of the New Deal's Farm Security Administration. Black-and-white reproductions of Depression-era photographs of the American South, the Dust Bowl, and American migrants in California are paired with quotes from people in the circumstances pictured.
