KIERKEGAARD, Søren.
KIERKEGAARD, Søren. Christian Discourses. London: Oxford University Press, 1939.8vo. Original black cloth and grey dustwrapper; pp. xviii + 389; wrapper price-clipped, internally very clean, very good.First UK edition. These discourses were first published in Copenhagen in 1848, showing once again how slow the Anglophone world was to engage with Kierkegaard's philosophy. A profound revelation during Holy Week of 1848 drove Kierkegaard to become a directly Christian polemicist, and Christian Discourses was the first fruit of this new period in his work. In the third section he attacks self-satisfied Christians, establishing a theme that was to dominate his later work.#2096643

Florida, 1939. Good. Oblong quarto. Measuring 7" x 11". String-tied album, lacking the boards. Contains 103 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2.5" and 2.5" x 3.75", with captions. Good only album lacking the boards with some chips with near fine photographs. The album begins with a page which reads "Never to be Forgotten are the Persons and Places Pictured in this Book...October -- 1938." The photos details trips, many of which are at the seaside, as well as family and friends posing throughout the summer and fall of 1938. Most of the beaches are unidentified but the few places that do have captions are in Florida. The album opens with a photo of crashing waves and another of a Naval blimp flying over the coast. Other photos include young men and women posing on the beach with girls in cheesecake pinup-style poses. They also spent their time taking road trips, hiking, and boating on the coast. The travelers are mentioned by first names only and include Lilian, Brad, Muriel, Norma, Everett, and someone nicknamed "Foo-Foo." They are also captioned frequently as "The Gang," and are seen in numerous pictures posing together at picnics, by a local waterfall, and at the cottage they were staying in. Halfway through the album the captions reveal the group has moved their base of operations to Jensen, Florida and the Florida Keys. These photos show palm trees on the drive to Castle Hill in Jenson and read "miles of this and that to get to Jenson." Another photo shows the "metropolis of Jenson" which features the small center of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kent, Rockwell
Ausable Forks, NY, 1939. One page, quarto, on personal letterhead. Fine. To Ralph D. Hartman, Cleveland. Kent apologizes for his delay in correspondence, and obliges his request to have some books signed. He writes further: "I am glad my letter to Tom Maloney [editor of the then recently founded U.S. CAMERA - Kent contributed to its inaugural issue] amused you. I did not amuse him, for my contention is that photography isn't, can't be, and shouldn't be art, that its' value lies not in being art and that when it stops being straight documental recording and tries to be art it becomes simply neither. Thank God that Brady of the Civil War period did not think he was an artist." Signed "Faithfully yours, Rockwell Kent." Although clearly on the losing side of the argument, Kent was himself a prolific documentary photographer, accumulating a substantial archive of photographs, particularly in the context of his travels and the recording of raw material for his own art work.
