Prospero Cahuantzi, editor
Mexico, D.F.: Libreria Anticuaria G.M. Echaniz 1939 - 11-1/2”x9-1/2”, quarter-leather two-post binding. 75 plates, printed in color on heavy stock including three foldout plates. 21 page prologue, 4 supplemental plates numbered A-D, frontispiece, and index sheet at rear. This is a reproduction of a 16th century Tlaxcala codex. The Lienzo de Tlaxcala uses detailed drawings to depict the time of contact and conflict between Hernando Cortez and various people groups in and around the Tlaxcala region of Mexico. It is comprised of images with accompanying headings in Nahuatl and captions in Spanish. Fine overall with some toning at binding edge of the prologue which is on lower quality paper. A near fine copy in good-only quarter-leather two-post binding. Small inked name of Betty Factor on title page. Factor, and her husband Monte, were significant collectors of contemporary art in Los Angeles and founders of several non-profit institutions there. Some light age toning at the edges of several plates, not affecting the images. Two of the fold-out plates have some tears at the folds and some staining. Covers: rubbed at edges and corners with some damp staining on lower right front cover, other smaller stains and soiling on rear. Large chips at top and bottom of spine. Unlike other codices published by this press, there is no indication of a limitation but there are only six copies in Worldcat. A seventh, deteriorated copy is at the Smithsonian Institution which is currently searching for someone to contribute $1500 to fund conservation efforts. You can save them the eff … [Click Below for Full Description]

TURING, Alan Mathison.
London: C. F. Hodgson and Son, 1939. First edition, journal issue in original printed wrappers, of Turing's PhD thesis, "one of the key documents in the history of mathematics and computer science" (Appel), and perhaps Turing's most formidable paper. ""Systems of logic based on ordinals" is a profound work of first rank importance. Among its achievements are the exploration of a means of circumventing Gödel's incompleteness theorems; the introduction of the concept of an 'oracle machine,' thereby opening the field of relative computability; and, in the wake of the demolition of the Hilbert programme (by Gödel, Turing and Church), an analysis of the place of intuition in mathematics and logic" (Copeland, p. 126). Rare on the market in unrestored original printed wrappers (we know of only one copy at auction, in the Weinreb Computer Collection, Bloomsbury Book Auctions, 28 October 1999). "Turing's 1938 Princeton PhD thesis, "Systems of logic based on ordinals," which includes his notion of an oracle machine, has had a lasting influence on computer science and mathematics... A work of philosophy as well as mathematics, Turing's thesis envisions a practical goal - a logical system to formalize mathematical proofs so that they can be checked mechanically. If every step of a theorem could be verified mechanically, the burden on intuition would be limited to the axioms... Turing's vision of "constructive systems of logic for practical use" has become reality: in the twenty-first century, automated "formal methods" are now routine" (Appel) Turing studied at King's College, Cambridg … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sutnar, Ladislav
Original-Ausgabe.

FAULKNER, William
NY: Random House. 1939. A review copy of Faulkner's elaborately structured novel, which consists of two distinct stories presented in alternating chapters. The rare review slip, in addition to title, author, price, and publication date, carries a 100+ word synopsis of the novel's themes, in language that differs from that of the jacket copy, and concludes that The Wild Palms is "the most absorbing tale that the author has ever told." The binding is the first state, with the front and spine stamped in gold and green. But for tape shadows to the edges of the boards, a near fine copy in a good dust jacket with the edge tape-strengthened on the verso but still vulnerable with wear and tears at the folds. Very uncommon as a review copy, and a rare glimpse of the marketing of the novel in its own day. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine.
