Niels Bohr
USA: American Physical Society, 1939. Very good. The Mechanism of Nuclear Fission, Bohr & Wheeler. On continued gravitational attraction, Oppenheimer & Snyder. Physical Review, Vol. 56, No. 5, September 1, 1939. 1st edition, journal issue, of the first theoretical paper on nuclear fission. In January 1939 Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch, with Bohr's encouragement, published a letter in Nature announcing their discovery of nuclear fission in uranium. The news took the scientific world by storm, with over 100 papers on uranium fission experiments appearing in the next twelve months, but Bohr was the only one during this period to publish on the theoretical aspects of this phenomenon. Collaborating with American physicist John A. Wheeler, Bohr worked out in great detail the complete theory of nuclear fission, publishing the results in the present paper. Paper on pages 426-450. In very good condition. This volume also contains Oppenheimer & Snyder's "On continued gravitational contraction", which constitutes the first theoretical prediction of a singularity when a sufficiently large neutron star collapses, a phenomenon now known as the formation of a black hole. Paper on pages 455-459. Some repaired tears with no loss of text, otherwise in very good condition. Two important papers in one volume; green cloth boards with brown leather spine, gilt lettering. Guaranteed as described. [Attributes: First Edition]

Derouet Lesacq
1939. height 23.25" x width 15.75" This is one of a series of posters created for the Loterie Nationale (National Lottery) in France by a team of artists known as Derouet-Lesacq. In these posters, the element of simplicity is emphasized, allowing the artists to apply detail to the array of environments that these posters are set in. This Art Deco style poster is for a special flower themed lottery drawing. The man in the center of the image is holding up his gardening tool as he admires a beautiful flower made of lottery tickets. The suggestion here is you would have all of the time in the world to do all of your gardening. The French Government promoted a nationwide lottery for many years, and during the 1930 s they commissioned artist Edgar Derouet to create many of their posters. Derouet realized his posters either alone or with one of his many collaborators. This poster is the result of a collaboration with Charles Lesacq, who worked with Derouet from 1938 to 1940. Edgar Derouet (1910-2001) is known for his simplistic, geometric and modern advertising posters for the French Lottery (Loterie Nationale). Derouet was selected by France to create a campaign for the Loterie Nationale because of his well-known reputation as a graphic artist. In his earlier days, Derouet studied with well-known poster artists Paul Colin and George Hamel, allowing him to further perfect his illustration technique. Derouet won an award for Best Poster of the Year in 1936 and was featured at the International Exposition in Paris, France in 1937. Gardner, Erle Stanley as Fair, A. A.
New York: Morrow, 1939. Very good in wrappers. Rare Advance Reading Copy. THE BIGGER THEY COME Erle Stanley Gardner ( A. A. Fair) Gardner, Erle Stanley (as Fair, A. A.) New York: William Morrow and Company, 1939 Softcover in wrappers as issued. 8vo. Very good Advance Reading Copy of the first A. A. Fair book by Erle Stanley Gardner writing as A. A. Fair. Some wear and creasing as shown in the photos. This is quite rare to encounter. It is mystery as to why. I think that copies were read and read again and just tossed away eventually as the reprints were issued. Many people like the Cool and Lam books much better than the Perry Mason mysteries. Gardner authored the Perry Mason series books, but readers prefer the Bertha Cool and Donald Lam books over those. This is a mystery set in California and Arizona. Gardner is still the best selling author in the world, perhaps Stephen King or Cartwright are before him. He wasat the top when I researched this years ago. This rarity comes with a clamshell box as pictured and is in very good condition overall with professionally laid rice paper reinforcementrice paper on the folding areas on the verso of both jacket flaps as shown. Not price-clipped. This advance copy is merely the dust jacket folded over as would be a paperbound book be and sent out to reviewers for future sales. I am sure not many of these survived for several reasons: one being the World War and two, no one knew that Gardner was A. A. Fair and three, the fragility of the book. This is book that is not common at all, this copy is the only one I have encountered. This w … [Click Below for Full Description]

O'Casey, Sean
Macmillan & Co, London, 1939. First edition of this autobiography by the famed Irish playwright. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "To Joe Cummins, with deep affection, from Sean O'Casey remembering many delightful Dublin chats round his surgery firesides. Devon 1939. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket. A famous Irish playwright looks back at his early formative years, in Dublin, during the colorful period of Parnell. Johnny Casside's childhood was a tragic one, cut off first by the loss of his father, then by an acute eye infection, which doubtless helped stimulate his imagination and creative faculties. Years of poverty and malnutrition, conflicts between doctor and rector over his schooling, the struggle in school to keep pace with other boys, in spite of bandaged eyes, reprieve, when his mother finally sided with the doctor and removed him. Alternating with his harrowing personal experiences are descriptions of the times, -- processions, a Castle ball, a wake -- all done in lyrical, extravagantly Joycian manner, stream of consciousness style, plus the Rabelasian vernacular of the period. An unusual book, a blend of comedy and tragedy, very Irish in its sensitivity, its rhymes of thought and word. The book concerns itself only with those years of his childhood -- revealing the background against which his plays are drawn. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

His Majesty's Stationery office, London, 1939. 106 pages. 245 x 153 mm. Before the outbreak of World War II there were a handful of Jews in the capital, Georgetown, but there was neither an organized community nor a synagogue. Early in 1939, 165 Jewish refugees from Europe, who arrived on the S.S. Koenigstein (see page 90 of this book), were not permitted to disembark, and shortly thereafter the government barred immigration. In 1939, in the wake of the failure of the Evian Conference on the German refugee problem and in view of Britain's intention to severely restrict Jewish immigration to Palestine (see the White Paper), Britain proposed her crown colony Guyana as a site for Jewish immigration and settlement. Thus, in February 1939, an international investigating committee under the auspices of the Inter-Governmental Commission on Refugees, formed at Evian, arrived in the country to explore the proposed area. The land under consideration consisted of approximately 42,000 sq. mi. in the forest and swamp region of the interior. Neither the coastal region, which comprises 4% of the area of British Guyana but holds 90% of the country's population, nor the open region adjacent to it, were included in the proposed area. The committee stated that although the region was not ideal for the settlement of European immigrants, the quality of the soil, the availability of important minerals, and the climatic and health conditions did not preclude their settlement. The committee proposed a two-year trial period during which 3,000-5,000 sturdy young people with professional training wou … [Click Below for Full Description]

FOX, Gardner. (KANE, Bob)
Brooklyn, N.Y., 1939. Unbound. Very Good. Five unlined legal-size sheets. Each typed on one side with some pencil notations and a sketch on back (along with pencil rubbings). Very good with folds from being mailed and very light toning; one sheet complete but separated at the center fold. The original typescript for the fourth comic book story to feature Batman, written by Gardner Fox, who also created The Flash, Hawkman, Sandman, and The Justice Society, the first superhero team in comic books. While Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger created Batman's first two appearances in *Detective* 27 and 28, it was Fox who took over the writing duties in issue 29 introducing several classic elements to the Batman mythos including the Utility Belt, Batarang, and the first recurring villain, Doctor Death. This script for issue 30, is the second of a two-part story (another first), with the Doctor returning but with his face horribly disfigured from an explosion, establishing a template of the ridiculous and macabre that became the trademark of Batman's rogue's gallery. The typescript includes numerous edits and emendations in ink and pencil in two distinct hands, those of Fox and Kane. Particularly notable among the edits is a portion of the description that has been crossed out and rewritten on the back of one page. The same page also features a preliminary sketch of the Batgyro by Kane, the first ever bat-themed vehicle or device that would debut in the next month's issue. The typescript comes from the collection of Mario J. Sacripante, who lived in the same building as Kane in Rego … [Click Below for Full Description]
