Synopsis Finnegans Wake is a novel by Irish writer James Joyce which is significant for its experimental style and the resulting reputation as one of the most difficult works of fiction in the English language. Written in Paris over a period of seventeen years, and published in 1939, two years before the author's death, Finnegans Wake was Joyce's final work. The entire book is written in a largely idiosyncratic language, consisting of a mixture of standard English lexical items and neologistic multilingual puns and portmanteau words, which many critics believe attempts to recreate the experience of sleep and dreams. Owing to the work's expansive linguistic experiments, stream of consciousness writing style, literary allusions, free dream associations, and its abandonment of the conventions of plot and … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEN MAGAZINE / Ernest HEMINGWAY, contributor
New York: 1938-1939. First edition. 39 issues, 7 April 1938 to 29 June 1939. Bound in four volumes, gilt-lettered black cloth, all original covers preserved. Some light rubbing, occasional browning of paper as usual. Item #401822 A complete run of the short-lived illustrated large-format magazine, known for its controversial and political content. Ken: An Insider's World was founded by David A. Smart and Arnold Ginrich, who earlier has founded Esquire. The first editor Jay Allen drew talent heavily from the political left. Quickly fired, he was replaced by George Seldes, who also proved too left-wing for advertisers. Some of the politicians featured with photo layouts were Presidents Calvin Coolidge, Grover Cleveland, Thomas Harding, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as well as many prominent German figures. Investigated in 1938 for being Communist leaning, Gingrich denied the magazine had any political slant. The magazine is an important window into the late 1930s, mixing the multitude of advertisements and their value as artifacts of material culture, with the dangerous world politics of the day, and the major figures involved in it. Ken's most notable publications were the articles by Ernest Hemingway on the Spanish Civil War that appeared in the first fourteen issues. In the first issue, it was stated that Hemingway was originally announced to be editor, but had taken no part in editing, nor in the formation of its policies. Hemingway, worried that their politics might be "liberal-phoney," insisted that a disclaimer be printed: "If he sees eye to eye with us on Ken, we wou … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Business Cycles" by Joseph A. Schumpeter. Published in 1939 by McGraw-Hill Book Company in New York. Two volumes. Both volumes are first edition, first printings, with "FIRST EDITION" stated on the title page of each volume. Volume 1 is 448 pages long, Volume 2 continues to page 1095. The books are bound in maroon cloth, with gilt lettering to the spine. The books measure approximately 9.25" x 6.5". The books are in very good minus condition. Moderate wear and rubbing to the cloth boards, with the corners rubbed through to the cardboard. Moderate to heavy underlining and notations in pen and ink in volume 1. The second volume only has a few instances of underlining and notations. The rear pastedowns of both volumes have some staining as shown in the photographs provided. Schumpeter is important because he developed a theory of business cycles which puts its emphasis on industrial innovations rather than banking. Most business cycle theories put their emphasis the other way, and are essentially monetary. Maynard Keynes is just as much a monetary economist as Milton Friedman when he comes to his explanation of business cycles. This is surely an argument which is going to be reopened. Schumpeter starts his account of business cycles at the top rather than the bottom of the cycle. "These booms consist in the carrying out of innovations in the industrial and commercial organisms. By innovations I understand such changes in the combinations of the factors of production as cannot be effected by infinitesimal steps or variations on the margin. They consist primarily in changes of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Baumann, Gustave; Kidder, Alfred Vincent (Foreword)
Santa Fe, New Mexico: Writers' Editions, Inc, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. Baumann, Gustave. One of 480 copies, octavo size, [41] pp., signed by Gustave Baumann on the centre illustration. Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) was a German-American printmaker and painter, one of the leading figures in the revival of colour woodcuts; he spent a great part of his life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, creating work depicting southwestern landscapes, pueblo life, and ancient Native American petroglyphs. His work has been shown in prestigious institutes such as the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. This volume is a collection of woodcuts by Baumann, copied from the pictographs found in the caves on the Pajarito Plateau of northern New Mexico, dating from 1150-1500 CE. Baumann faithfully recreates the pictographs from the caves in woodcuts; the pictographs have, over time, been defaced by wind and rain and by the vandalism of tourists, leaving these prints to serve as an archaeological record. This volume is the first edition with original prints by Baumann from 1939, printed in one, two, or three colours, and includes notes and descriptions from Baumann about the context of the pictographs and the caves, creating a work of artistic mastery and geographic sensibility, illuminating the history and culture of a people long gone. Included also is a foreword by Alfred Vincent Kidder (1885-1963), a leading American archaeologist specialising in the southwestern U.S. and Mesoamerica, who offers insight into the archaeolog … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander Rodchenko
Moscow & Leningrad: State Art Publishers. This copy, a 1st edition, is unmarked, 10" X 15.5", a photo album, in good condition. The cover is soiled, the corners are bumped. Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko (1891 - 1956) was a Russian artist, sculptor, photographer and graphic designer. He was one of the founders of constructivism and Russian design; he was married to the artist Varvara Stepanova. Alexander Rodchenko is perhaps the most important avant-garde artist to have put his art in the service of political revolution. In this regard, his career is a model of the clash between modern art and radical politics. He emerged as a fairly conventional painter, but his encounters with Russian Futurists propelled him to become an influential founder of the Constructivist movement. And his commitment to the Russian Revolution subsequently encouraged him to abandon first painting and then fine art in its entirety, and to instead put his skills in the service of industry and the state, designing everything from advertisements to book covers. His life's work was a ceaseless experiment with an extraordinary array of media, from painting and sculpture to graphic design and photography. Later in his career, however, the increasingly repressive policies targeted against modern artists in Russia led him to return to painting. The book that won Best Photography Book of the Year at PhotoEspana isEditorial Lampreave's facsimile of Alexander Rodchenko and Vavara Stepanova's Soviet Aviation originally published in 1939. This was one of the famed "World's Fair" publications (along with a seri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, 1939. The Regatta Mystery and Other Stories is a short story collection written by Agatha Christie and first published in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company in 1939. This first edition retailed at $2.00 and the price is intact. The stories feature, with one exception (In a Glass Darkly), Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple or Parker Pyne, Christie's detectives. The collection was not published in the UK and was the first time a Christie book was published in the US without a comparable publication in the UK; however all of the stories in the collection were published in later UK collections. Sartre, Jean-Paul
Paris: Gallimard, 1939. First edition, review copy, marked service de presse("S. P."). Inscribed by Sartre on the half-title page: "A Monsieur Soret / en homage de / JP Sartre." The Soret here is possibly the French ethnologist Marcel Soret, who wrote extensively about the Congo. ***** Near contemporary quarter-morocco over vellum-covered boards, spine lettered gilt, boards ruled in gilt and light grayish blue; top edge gilt; wood grain patterned endpapers; original wrappers(including backstrip) bound in. Joints lightly stressed, boards very lightly soiled. A beautifully bound Near Fine copy. Housed in a matching morocco-tipped slipcase. Slipcase with some light flaking, bottom edge split repaired - a nicely complementary creation. ***** The book is a collection of short stories featuring characters facing the absurdities of life - mortality, dread, morality, insanity, sexuality, and political madness. Written during the apex of fascism in Europe, Sartre probes his existential philosophy in the midst of a dark time. The title story, The Wall, examines three Spanish civil war prisoners facing execution in the morning and their long night of anguish and psychological descent. ***** A rare inscribed copy of one of Sartre's most significant works.*****For even better pricing, visit our website*****

This work was written largely in an absurd and bizarre language, blending many aspects of English; however, it was Joyce’s attempt to describe the experience of dreaming. This work also has the distinction of being ‘the greatest failure in literature’, according to the Burgess Novels list. There are no signatures, bookplates, or markings of any kind in the book. There is some yellowing to the front endpapers, but the rest of the pages are clean and free of any foxing. The book comes with its original yellow slipcase in good condition. This is the limited edition #48/425 copies signed by James Joyce.

Winston S. Churchill
Step by Step, Princess Marthe Bibesco's copy inscribed and dated by Churchill and presented by Churchill's brother Winston S. Churchill London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1939 First British edition, first printing, in dust jacket Condition: Very Good Jacket Condition: Very Good minus This remarkable inscribed first edition features a three-way association between Winston S. Churchill, his longtime friend, the influential and colorful Romanian Princess Marthe Bibesco, and Winston Churchill's brother, John Strange "Jack" Spencer-Churchill. Winston Churchill's inscription appears on the ffep in three lines and reads "Inscribed by / Winston S. Churchill / March 1946". Bibesco's distinctive signature appears directly above Churchill's inscription in pencil and reads "Marthe Bibesco". The pastedown (opposing the ffep) bears a personal note from Jack Churchill on the stationary of The Ritz Hotel, Piccadilly, London. Written in pencil in 4 lines it reads: "Princess Bibesco / with / Mr. John Churchill's / Compliments". The number "411" also appears on the note; we can only speculate about the meaning, which may refer to a room number. It is not certain that the note was hand written by Jack Churchill, but this seems quite plausible given that Jack was then a prosperous London resident and Bibesco was living at The Ritz Hotel in Paris. A reasonable assumption is that Jack sent the book to Bibesco at The Ritz in Paris via The Ritz in London. Bibesco first met Churchill in April 1914 at a dinner party with French politicians on the eve of the First World War. They would become and r … [Click Below for Full Description]

Keller, Helen.
[NP: ND, but ca. 1939]. Photograph (black and white) of Miss Keller with her beloved dog, "Go-Go" an Akita pure bred, inscribed in pencil across the bottom third of photograph, "To Mr. John E. Monahan / in appreciation of his help / fullness. / Cordially / Helen Keller." Size of photograph: 8 inches x 10 inches; matted and framed to overall size of 13 inches x 14 inches; photograph a bit rumpled at corners with some spotting. Still a lovely image of Miss Keller at age 59 seated on large chair with "Go-Go" seated at her feet, one of her hands on his collar and the other across his back.
