STEINBECK, John.
New York: The Viking Press, 1939. Octavo. Original buff cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to boards in dark brown, yellow and brown decorated endpapers, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. An exceptionally bright copy in the jacket with just a hint of rubbing to spine ends and tips. First edition, first printing, of Steinbeck's masterpiece and one of the great American novels of the 20th century. The fine jacket design is by Elmer Hader, known primarily as a children's book illustrator (joint winner with his wife, Berta Hoerner Hader, of the Caldecott Medal in 1948 for The Big Snow): apparently Steinbeck was so taken with their book Billy Butter (1936) that he requested that Elmer Hader design the cover for The Grapes of Wrath; the illustrator going on to work on two other Steinbeck books, East of Eden (1952 and The Winter of Our Discontent (1961). "Business Cycles" by Joseph A. Schumpeter. Published in 1939 by McGraw-Hill Book Company in New York. Two volumes. Both volumes are first edition, first printings, with "FIRST EDITION" stated on the title page of each volume. Volume 1 is 448 pages long, Volume 2 continues to page 1095. The books are bound in maroon cloth, with gilt lettering to the spine. The books measure approximately 9.25" x 6.5". The books are in very good minus condition. Moderate wear and rubbing to the cloth boards, with the corners rubbed through to the cardboard. Moderate to heavy underlining and notations in pen and ink in volume 1. The second volume only has a few instances of underlining and notations. The rear pastedowns of both volumes have some staining as shown in the photographs provided. Schumpeter is important because he developed a theory of business cycles which puts its emphasis on industrial innovations rather than banking. Most business cycle theories put their emphasis the other way, and are essentially monetary. Maynard Keynes is just as much a monetary economist as Milton Friedman when he comes to his explanation of business cycles. This is surely an argument which is going to be reopened. Schumpeter starts his account of business cycles at the top rather than the bottom of the cycle. "These booms consist in the carrying out of innovations in the industrial and commercial organisms. By innovations I understand such changes in the combinations of the factors of production as cannot be effected by infinitesimal steps or variations on the margin. They consist primarily in changes of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alexander Rodchenko
Moscow & Leningrad: State Art Publishers. This copy, a 1st edition, is unmarked, 10" X 15.5", a photo album, in good condition. The cover is soiled, the corners are bumped. Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko (1891 - 1956) was a Russian artist, sculptor, photographer and graphic designer. He was one of the founders of constructivism and Russian design; he was married to the artist Varvara Stepanova. Alexander Rodchenko is perhaps the most important avant-garde artist to have put his art in the service of political revolution. In this regard, his career is a model of the clash between modern art and radical politics. He emerged as a fairly conventional painter, but his encounters with Russian Futurists propelled him to become an influential founder of the Constructivist movement. And his commitment to the Russian Revolution subsequently encouraged him to abandon first painting and then fine art in its entirety, and to instead put his skills in the service of industry and the state, designing everything from advertisements to book covers. His life's work was a ceaseless experiment with an extraordinary array of media, from painting and sculpture to graphic design and photography. Later in his career, however, the increasingly repressive policies targeted against modern artists in Russia led him to return to painting. The book that won Best Photography Book of the Year at PhotoEspana isEditorial Lampreave's facsimile of Alexander Rodchenko and Vavara Stepanova's Soviet Aviation originally published in 1939. This was one of the famed "World's Fair" publications (along with a seri … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEN MAGAZINE / Ernest HEMINGWAY, contributor
New York: 1938-1939. First edition. 39 issues, 7 April 1938 to 29 June 1939. Bound in four volumes, gilt-lettered black cloth, all original covers preserved. Some light rubbing, occasional browning of paper as usual. Item #401822 A complete run of the short-lived illustrated large-format magazine, known for its controversial and political content. Ken: An Insider's World was founded by David A. Smart and Arnold Ginrich, who earlier has founded Esquire. The first editor Jay Allen drew talent heavily from the political left. Quickly fired, he was replaced by George Seldes, who also proved too left-wing for advertisers. Some of the politicians featured with photo layouts were Presidents Calvin Coolidge, Grover Cleveland, Thomas Harding, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as well as many prominent German figures. Investigated in 1938 for being Communist leaning, Gingrich denied the magazine had any political slant. The magazine is an important window into the late 1930s, mixing the multitude of advertisements and their value as artifacts of material culture, with the dangerous world politics of the day, and the major figures involved in it. Ken's most notable publications were the articles by Ernest Hemingway on the Spanish Civil War that appeared in the first fourteen issues. In the first issue, it was stated that Hemingway was originally announced to be editor, but had taken no part in editing, nor in the formation of its policies. Hemingway, worried that their politics might be "liberal-phoney," insisted that a disclaimer be printed: "If he sees eye to eye with us on Ken, we wou … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jeffries, J.M.N.
London; (1939): Longmans, Green and Co. First Edition. Octavo. First printing. xxiii, [1] 728 pages. Maps on endpapers, a rare book with the original dust jacket. It so clearly stated the Arab case for Palestine and denounced Zionist claims that it horrified Jews around the world and especially Zionist leaders. While J. C. Hurewitz admitted Jeffries had documented his thesis that Zionism was an international conspiracy to defend the Palestinian Arabs of their lands, he challenges the methods Jeffries used. This may be why according to Christies in their auction of 2016 said Jewish agencies had bought up copies accounting for the extreme rarity of the first edition. However, as William Yale noted in his long interview in the American Historical Review (Vol. 46:1, (Oct. 1940) p. 146-148 that it not only deals with the intricacies of the Arab-Zionist problem from 1914 to 1938 in considerable detail but in spite of his polemical nature, he exhibits a thorough knowledge of the subject including details previously unknown to a very few high level diplomatic officials. Saint-Exupery, Antoine de
New York: Reynal and Hitchcock, 1939. First edition of Saint-Exupery's philosophical memoir of flight. Octavo, original half cloth, pictorial endpapers. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, (translated from the French), "For Bill Donovan, because I wrote almost half of this book in his home. With my most faithful friendship and all my gratitude for happy days at his home. Antoine de Saint-Exupery." The recipient William Joseph "Wild Bill" Donovan was an American soldier, lawyer, intelligence officer and diplomat. He is best remembered as the wartime head of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency, during World War II. He is also known as the "Father of American Intelligence" and the "Father of Central Intelligence." The CIA regards Donovan as its founding father, according to journalist Evan Thomas in a 2011 Vanity Fair profile. In the article Thomas observed that Donovan's "exploits are utterly improbable but by now well documented in declassified wartime records that portray a brave, noble, headlong, gleeful, sometimes outrageous pursuit of action and skulduggery." A statue of him stands in the lobby of the CIA headquarters building in Langley, Virginia. A veteran of World War I, Donovan is the only person to have received all four of the United States' highest awards: The Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the National Security Medal. He was also a recipient of the Silver Star and Purple Heart, as well as decorations from a number of other nat … [Click Below for Full Description]
