Lowndes, Marie Belloc
Longmans, Green and Co. Very good plus in a very good dust jacket (price intact); spine slightly faded, with chipping to edges and light creasing. INSCRIBED BY LOWNDES to actress and writer Ruth Gordon on the flyleaf: "Miss Ruth Gordon, with the kind thoughts of the writer, Marie Belloc Lowndes." With a bookplate signed by Ruth Gordon and her husband, writer and director Garson Kanin, affixed to the second blank page. Laid in is a typed letter (near-fine) signed by Lowndes to Gordon on Ritz Tower Hotel stationary, dated April 10, 1939. In the letter, she presents the novel a few days ahead of its official publication date of April 19, notes there is some potential for the novel to be adapted into a play, and that she would be "delighted if the part of Lizzie appealed to Gordon." Although a play or film based on Lowndes' fictional account of the Lizzie Borden murders was never produced, an interesting association between the crime writer and actress whom she wished to embody the infamous subject of her novel. First printing, with first printing dust jacket, octavo size, 272 pp. The thirty-third and last of the "canonical" books in the fabulously popular "Oz" series, the nineteenth written by Ruth Plumly Thompson. In fact, it seems the book was written with the film in mind, as the story focuses on the characters who appeared in the first book. This a lovely copy, a wonderful way to complete a set for any Oz collector. KEN MAGAZINE / Ernest HEMINGWAY, contributor
New York: 1938-1939. First edition. 39 issues, 7 April 1938 to 29 June 1939. Bound in four volumes, gilt-lettered black cloth, all original covers preserved. Some light rubbing, occasional browning of paper as usual. Item #401822 A complete run of the short-lived illustrated large-format magazine, known for its controversial and political content. Ken: An Insider's World was founded by David A. Smart and Arnold Ginrich, who earlier has founded Esquire. The first editor Jay Allen drew talent heavily from the political left. Quickly fired, he was replaced by George Seldes, who also proved too left-wing for advertisers. Some of the politicians featured with photo layouts were Presidents Calvin Coolidge, Grover Cleveland, Thomas Harding, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as well as many prominent German figures. Investigated in 1938 for being Communist leaning, Gingrich denied the magazine had any political slant. The magazine is an important window into the late 1930s, mixing the multitude of advertisements and their value as artifacts of material culture, with the dangerous world politics of the day, and the major figures involved in it. Ken's most notable publications were the articles by Ernest Hemingway on the Spanish Civil War that appeared in the first fourteen issues. In the first issue, it was stated that Hemingway was originally announced to be editor, but had taken no part in editing, nor in the formation of its policies. Hemingway, worried that their politics might be "liberal-phoney," insisted that a disclaimer be printed: "If he sees eye to eye with us on Ken, we wou … [Click Below for Full Description]

Illustrated with 28 full-page color plates by William H. Meyers. Heller and Magee, Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press, 1915-1940: 317: The method of color reproduction employed in NAVAL SKETCHES OF THE WAR IN CALIFORNIA is novel in the history of printing: first the original drawings were reproduced in black and white by a gravure process, then the color blocks were cut in linoleum, and printed over the black and white prints, shading was effected by sandpapering the linoleum. Introduction by Franklin D. Roosevelt. This copy is SIGNED on the front endpaper by Franklin Roosevelt for the Republican presidential challenger to Lyndon Baines Johnson, Barry Goldwater. Pasted below Roosevelt's signature is a TYPED LETTER SIGNED by his secretary Missy LeHand to Goldwater stating that he was signing the book for Goldwater whose bookplate is on the front pastedown. Among the many collecting areas which occupied FDR, stamps and American naval iconography dominated his interests. His acquisition of Meyers's sketchbook was a profound event for him: "In many years of collecting sketches, paintings and engravings relating to the navy of the United States, I had found virtually none which had connections with naval operations in the Pacific in … [Click Below for Full Description]

***There are more pictures, but I have reached my limit on this listing. Die Soldaten Des Fuhrers im Felde HITLER 1939 book w Nazi flag / banner / cloth. "The Soldiers of the Leader in the Field" w pictures, maps, and slides. The GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY....... If we don't learn from History, we are doomed to repeat it.... This book is an extremely rare representation of Hitler and his Army in the late 30's. There are also maps included with the pictures but I was unable to include them here. There is also the original purchase receipt and brochure included. The flag / banner/ tablecloth, etc, etc is roughly 57" across and is in remarkable good condition for its age with a couple of small light brown stains here and there (see pic) and a finger size hole. The red edges are rough because this has been cut from a larger piece of material. I am thinking this was either a bed or a table cover, or possibly part of a flag or banner. The binding of the book is pretty rough (see pics) and there is so wear on the edges and side of this book.

WILLIAM FAULKNER
Covers darkened near edges, with somet paper loss at bottom & corners; spine age-faded with some fraying at top and bottom of spine; no internal damage. Published by Random House (New York 1939). First edition. Hardbound, with wood-grain-patterned paper sides and rust cloth back. In the binding of the 250-copy limited edition, this copy lacks the tipped-in signed limitation page. The covers are darkened near the edges, with some paper loss at the bottom and the corners, and the spine is age-faded with some fraying at the top and bottom of the spine; no internal damage. Good. Faulkner's moving novel of flight and refuge, later published under his original title, If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem, The Wild Palms tells two interwoven stories. "The Wild Palms" and "Old Man" alternate chapters, each telling a different, but equally captivating tale of a relationship between a man and a woman. "The Wild Palms" ends with one of literature's darkest closing lines, "Between grief and nothing, I will take grief." "For range of effect, philosophical weight, originality of style, variety of characterization, humor, and tragic intensity, [Faulkner's works] are without equal in our time and country." Robert Penn Warren "He is the greatest artist the South has produced. . . . Indeed, through his many novels and short stories, Faulkner fights out the moral problem which was repressed after the nineteenth century [yet] for all his concern with the South, Faulkner was actually seeking out the nature of man. Thus we must turn to him for that continuity of moral purpose which made for greatness of o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Throughout the verses, Eliot draws similarities between his feline characters and human personalities. The first edition, printed in London in October of 1939, was quickly followed by an American edition published in November of the same year. The book was an immediate success, and has been re-issued with illustrations by notable artists including Nicolas Bentley (1940) and Edward Gorey (1982). Notably, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats served as the basis for Andrew Lloyd Webber's beloved musical, "Cats," which premiered in London in 1981, and would … [Click Below for Full Description]
