Joseph A. Schumpeter
New York: "Business Cycles" by Joseph A. Schumpeter. Published in 1939 by McGraw-Hill Book Company in New York. One of two volumes, first edition, first printing, with "FIRST EDITION" stated on the title page. Volume 1 is 448 pages long. The book is bound in maroon cloth, with gilt lettering to the spine. The books measure approximately 6.5" x 9.25". An ex-library copy from the Seattle Public Library. The book is in very good plus condition. It has all the usual markings of an ex-library copy, including a stamp on the bottom edge of the text block. The boards are well-preserved and retain their rich color. Minor staining on the rear board. Minor shelf wear to the spine and little bumping or scuffing to the corners. The gilt lettering on the spine is clean and bright. Slight stain on the top edge. The text block is slightly toned but is bright, clean and complete. The binding is sound. Schumpeter is important because he developed a theory of business cycles which puts its emphasis on industrial innovations rather than banking. Most business cycle theories put their emphasis the other way, and are essentially monetary. For example, John Maynard Keynes is just as much a monetary economist as Milton Friedman when he comes to his explanation of business cycles. As finance and business retain their importance in the global economy, Schumpeter's ideas retain their relevance and can provide an interesting dissenting viewpoint from conventional economic wisdom. 1939. if we don't learn from history we are doomed to repeat it this book is extremely rare representation of Hitler and his army in the late 30,s they are also maps included with the pictures but I was able to include them on here there are also some original purchase receipt and brochure included the flag banner tablecloth etc is roughly 57 inches across and is in remarkably good condition for its age with a couple of small light brown stains here and there (( see pictures )) and a finger size hole the red edges are rough because this has been cut from a larger piece of the material I'm thinking this was either table cover or possibly part of the flag or banner The binding of the book is pretty rough (( see pictures )) and there is so wear in the edges of the side of this book,,,, if you like to see more photos I can send.

Greene, Graham
1939. Typed on a small sheet of blue, headed note-paper. The letter has a crease from the original fold, a staple hole and other minor signs creasing to the edges. A pleasing testament to the regard in which Greene held Patrick Hamilton, and a tantalising hint of a dramatisation that might have been. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

"Business Cycles" by Joseph A. Schumpeter. Published in 1939 by McGraw-Hill Book Company in New York. Two volumes. Both volumes are first edition, first printings, with "FIRST EDITION" stated on the title page of each volume. Volume 1 is 448 pages long, Volume 2 continues to page 1095. The books are bound in maroon cloth, with gilt lettering to the spine. The books measure approximately 9.25" x 6.5". The books are in very good minus condition. Moderate wear and rubbing to the cloth boards, with the corners rubbed through to the cardboard. Moderate to heavy underlining and notations in pen and ink in volume 1. The second volume only has a few instances of underlining and notations. The rear pastedowns of both volumes have some staining as shown in the photographs provided. Schumpeter is important because he developed a theory of business cycles which puts its emphasis on industrial innovations rather than banking. Most business cycle theories put their emphasis the other way, and are essentially monetary. Maynard Keynes is just as much a monetary economist as Milton Friedman when he comes to his explanation of business cycles. This is surely an argument which is going to be reopened. Schumpeter starts his account of business cycles at the top rather than the bottom of the cycle. "These booms consist in the carrying out of innovations in the industrial and commercial organisms. By innovations I understand such changes in the combinations of the factors of production as cannot be effected by infinitesimal steps or variations on the margin. They consist primarily in changes of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Housed in a custom blue cloth chemise within blue half morocco box, spine lettered in gilt, blue cloth sides. A very good copy in the dust jacket, toned, chips and splits expertly repaired on verso. First edition, first printing. A superb presentation copy, inscribed by Steinbeck to the producer of the film adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath, Darryl F. Zanuck, on the front free endpaper: "For Darryl Zannuck [sic] with thanks for a fine picture John Steinbeck 1939 Los Gatos". Steinbeck first watched Zanuck's film at Twentieth-Century Fox on 15 December 1939. He wrote an adulatory letter to his agent Elizabeth Otis shortly afterward saying that "Zanuck has more than kept his word. He has a hard, straight picture in which the actors are submerged so completely that it looks and feels like a documentary film and certainly has a hard, truthful ring. No punches were pulled? In fact, with descriptive matter removed, it is a harsher thing than the book, by far" (cited in Eagan, America's Film Legacy, p. 310). Zanuck's film adaptation, which was publicly released on 24 January 1940, is widely regarded as one of the great American films of the century, and was one of the first 25 films selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 1989, for its cultural, historical and aesthetic significance. From Wikipedia: "...His first bestseller, Factories in the Field, appeared in 1939 and ranks among his most enduring works. Published within months of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, it examines the lives of migrant farm workers in California and condemns the politics and consequences of large-scale agribusiness. Shortly before its publication, McWilliams accepted an offer from incoming Governor Culbert Olson to head California's Division of Immigration and Housing. Over his four-year term (1938-1942), he focused on improving agricultural working conditions and wages, but his hopes for major reform deteriorated with the advent of World War II..." EDWARD ARDIZZONE British Pubs RARE
London: Cassell & Co, Ltd, 1939, 1939. First Edition, First Printing. Original grey boards printed in red and black. Small chip to head of spine. A Very Good+ copy. With 15 four-colour lithographic plates, including one double-page. First edition, sole impression. "Ardizonne's illustrations are generally concerned with contemporary life untouched by political, religious or ideological conflicts. His approach is not satiric or moralistic but autobiographical, and his drawings are representational and humourous and demonstrate his affection for people" (The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators). The Ardizzone illustrations, printed at the Curwen Press in stunning chromolithography, retain their vitality. Among the named pubs illustrated are the Spread Eagle in Thame, the Warrington in Maida Vale, the Red Lion at Barnes, the Goat just off Bond Street. The text, together with the Glossary of Terms commonly used in connection with the London Pubs, remain a wonderful insight and are added to by the wonderful Ardizzone lithos. Famous for its 15 colour lithographs by Edward Ardizzone, this is a very rare book and a beautifully illustrated 'guide' to pubs. A very rare title to find in any collectable condition and a key Ardizzone title. The book's scarcity has long been anecdotally attributed within the book trade to the bomb damage inflicted on Cassell's premises during the Blitz. Whether this is true or not, it remains a scarce book, especially in this condition. The two flaps from the VERY RARE dust jacket are loosley laid in. [Attributes: First Edition]

Alexander Rodchenko
Moscow & Leningrad: State Art Publishers, 1939. This copy, a 1st edition, is unmarked, 10" X 15.5", a photo album, in good condition. The cover is soiled, the corners are bumped. Aleksander Mikhailovich Rodchenko (1891 - 1956) was a Russian artist, sculptor, photographer and graphic designer. He was one of the founders of constructivism and Russian design; he was married to the artist Varvara Stepanova. Alexander Rodchenko is perhaps the most important avant-garde artist to have put his art in the service of political revolution. In this regard, his career is a model of the clash between modern art and radical politics. He emerged as a fairly conventional painter, but his encounters with Russian Futurists propelled him to become an influential founder of the Constructivist movement. And his commitment to the Russian Revolution subsequently encouraged him to abandon first painting and then fine art in its entirety, and to instead put his skills in the service of industry and the state, designing everything from advertisements to book covers. His life's work was a ceaseless experiment with an extraordinary array of media, from painting and sculpture to graphic design and photography. Later in his career, however, the increasingly repressive policies targeted against modern artists in Russia led him to return to painting. The book that won Best Photography Book of the Year at PhotoEspana isEditorial Lampreave's facsimile of Alexander Rodchenko and Vavara Stepanova's Soviet Aviation originally published in 1939. This was one of the famed "World's Fair" publications (along with … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dower, L.
Willam Blackwood, Edinburgh. 263 pp, ill, Dower, L. EPIC FAILURE 1939 London 263 pp, ill. Safari in Kenya and Tanganyika. For a mainly photographic safari this is good reading. They shot their own trophies to use as bait and then had to figure out how to set up the bait to attract the lions and leopards in the best possible angles. They had numerous encounters with lion, elephant, rhino and also buffalo and of course the plains game which they shot regularly. After the safari, it was discovered that much of the film was bad and many photos did not come out, hence the title. Will be enjoyed by anyone thinking of taking an adventurous photo safari.
