Seuss, Dr. [Theodor Seuss Geisel]
Random House, New York, 1939. First edition, first printing of this classic Dr. Seuss title. Quarto, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, illustrated throughout. Association copy, inscribed by the author opposite the title page, "For Josephine Kimball Godiva with very best thanks - Dr. Seuss." The recipient, Josephine Dodge Kimball co-founded the first book store to specialize in children's literature, Young Books, on Madison Avenue in 1929 with former Bryn Mawr classmate Joan Whitney Payson. Both women were from prominent families and had connections that brought the store instant fame. The store's opening brought headlines in the New York Times, Life and the Saturday Review of Literature and Kimball's expertly curated selection of children's books, art, and toys were often featured in the "On and Off the Avenue" shopping column of the New Yorker. In 1931, Time reported that Kimball and Payson presented an autograph manuscript signed by Albert Einstein to Yale University, an acquisition made through one of the ladies' patrons and, by 1944, the store had expanded to include a gallery, rare book room, and adult book department. Kimball also soon contributed reviews of children's books to Harper's and Scribner's including a column in the December 1937 issue of Scribner's Magazine praising Geisel's first book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. The publication of the present volume coincided with the tenth anniversary of the grand opening of Young Books. Kimball celebrated both with an exclusive cocktail party during which the present volume was most likely inscribe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Joyce, James
Faber & Faber, London, 1939. First signed limited edition, number 153 of only 425 large-paper copies signed by Joyce. Large octavo, original red cloth, titles to spine in gilt, top edge gilt, original publisher's yellow cloth slipcase. Signed by James Joyce on the limitation page. In near fine condition with the original publishers slipcase. Also includes the rare corrections of misprints pamphlet prepared by Joyce and published by Faber & Faber. Joyce began working on Finnegans Wake shortly after the 1922 publication of Ulysses. By 1924 installments of Joyce's new avant-garde work began to appear, in serialized form, in Parisian literary journals transatlantic review and transition, under the title "fragments from Work in Progress". The actual title of the work remained a secret until the book was published in its entirety, on 4 May 1939. The work has assumed a preeminent place in English literature. Anthony Burgess praised the book as "a great comic vision, one of the few books of the world that can make us laugh aloud on nearly every page." Harold Bloom called the book "Joyce's masterpiece", and wrote that "[if] aesthetic merit were ever again to center the canon [Finnegans Wake] would be as close as our chaos could come to the heights of Shakespeare and Dante." Modern Library named it one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Signed by Winston Churchill beneath his portrait in facsimile, "Winston S. Churchill" and with two notes affixed to the verso detailing the work's provenance entirely in Hayek's hand, one of which is inscribed on his business card from Frieburg University and the other of which is signed, "8-5-79 F.A. Hayek." With an additional transcription of Hayek's notes in English to the verso which reads, "This picture belonged to Squadron Leader H.O. Fairclough R.A.F. who served in the 1939-45 war. An exceptionally rare association piece linking two of the most ardent defenders of liberal democracy in the threat of fascism in 20th century Europe. Widely considered one of the 20th century's most significant figures, British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill remains popular in the Unite Kingdom and Western world where he is seen as a victorious wartime leader who played an important role in defending Europe's liberal democracy from the spread of fascism. Out of office during the 1930s, Churchill took the lead in calling for British rearmament to counter the growing threat from Nazi Germany. At the outbreak of the Second World War he was re-appointed First Lord of the Admiralty and in 1940 he became Prime Minister, replacing Neville Chamberlain. 1939. This lot is an 1939 Original Hardback Wisden. In Good Condition. 39s are never great and this is good and above avergae but there are nicer ones. This however is special as once owned by future editor Norman Preston and a Presentation copy from Wilfred Brookes. This book is good, it has had no restoration, the front board is a bit dark and the letters are dark too (so look faded) , the lettering is fading to the spine. Inside the hinges are strong but you can se the mesh to both front and rear hinges. Nice inside but small splash mark to page 31g.

Gallimard NRF. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Moscow: Izd. Vsesoiuznoi akademii arkhitektury, 1939. 48 pp.: ill. 21x16 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Spine repaired, some stains, otherwise very good and clean internally. Very rare. "Palace of Soviets will be built definitely at the time set by the party and government" - this book stressed in 1939. The design by architect B. Iofan was extraordinary because of building size, but this book proved that engineers headed to the most complicated construction of ever built. In fact, it was difficult to lay the foundation it needed, to equip the building with metal construction, electric power system, heating system as well as ventilation - after all, the huge meeting halls were designed inside. The edition reflected all stages of the pre-war history of projecting the grandiose building and presented how scrupulously it was done on 18 drawings of internal and external view. Worldcat shows the only copy in Getty Institute.

LLEWELLYN, Richard.
London: Michael Joseph Ltd, 1939. Octavo. Original cream buckram, spine lettered in gilt on red morocco label, top edge gilt. Spine very lightly sunned, minor foxing to endpapers and edges. A very good copy. First edition, signed limited issue, number 122 of 200 copies signed by the author. The story of Huw Morgan, a collier in a south Wales mining community, How Green Was My Valley was one of the early successes that secured the future of Michael Joseph's fledgling publishing house, which he founded in 1935: a time when many well-established companies were experiencing financial difficulties or closing down. Llewellyn originally proposed the title Land of My Fathers, which he changed at Joseph's suggestion to something "more biblical and nostalgic" (ODNB). It brought Llewellyn "instant celebrity and an assured income for the rest of his life. Filmed in Hollywood by John Ford in 1940 (winning five Oscars), the novel soon became a best-seller, was translated into some two dozen languages, and has never since been out of print. It is the most famous book ever written about south Wales and one of the most enduringly popular novels in English of the twentieth century" (ibid). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

EDWARD ARDIZZONE British Pubs RARE
London: Cassell & Co, Ltd, 1939, 1939. First Edition, First Printing. Original grey boards printed in red and black. Small chip to head of spine. A Very Good+ copy. With 15 four-colour lithographic plates, including one double-page. First edition, sole impression. "Ardizonne's illustrations are generally concerned with contemporary life untouched by political, religious or ideological conflicts. His approach is not satiric or moralistic but autobiographical, and his drawings are representational and humourous and demonstrate his affection for people" (The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators). The Ardizzone illustrations, printed at the Curwen Press in stunning chromolithography, retain their vitality. Among the named pubs illustrated are the Spread Eagle in Thame, the Warrington in Maida Vale, the Red Lion at Barnes, the Goat just off Bond Street. The text, together with the Glossary of Terms commonly used in connection with the London Pubs, remain a wonderful insight and are added to by the wonderful Ardizzone lithos. Famous for its 15 colour lithographs by Edward Ardizzone, this is a very rare book and a beautifully illustrated 'guide' to pubs. A very rare title to find in any collectable condition and a key Ardizzone title. The book's scarcity has long been anecdotally attributed within the book trade to the bomb damage inflicted on Cassell's premises during the Blitz. Whether this is true or not, it remains a scarce book, especially in this condition. The two flaps from the VERY RARE dust jacket are loosley laid in. [Attributes: First Edition]
