Claude François ajoute un pense-bête entre guillemet : (recherchez le disque « See the funny little clown ». WILLIAM FAULKNER
Covers darkened near edges, with somet paper loss at bottom & corners; spine age-faded with some fraying at top and bottom of spine; no internal damage. Published by Random House (New York 1939). First edition. Hardbound, with wood-grain-patterned paper sides and rust cloth back. In the binding of the 250-copy limited edition, this copy lacks the tipped-in signed limitation page. The covers are darkened near the edges, with some paper loss at the bottom and the corners, and the spine is age-faded with some fraying at the top and bottom of the spine; no internal damage. Good. Faulkner's moving novel of flight and refuge, later published under his original title, If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem, The Wild Palms tells two interwoven stories. "The Wild Palms" and "Old Man" alternate chapters, each telling a different, but equally captivating tale of a relationship between a man and a woman. "The Wild Palms" ends with one of literature's darkest closing lines, "Between grief and nothing, I will take grief." "For range of effect, philosophical weight, originality of style, variety of characterization, humor, and tragic intensity, [Faulkner's works] are without equal in our time and country." Robert Penn Warren "He is the greatest artist the South has produced. . . . Indeed, through his many novels and short stories, Faulkner fights out the moral problem which was repressed after the nineteenth century [yet] for all his concern with the South, Faulkner was actually seeking out the nature of man. Thus we must turn to him for that continuity of moral purpose which made for greatness of o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard J Cyriax
ont Methuen & Co. : London. 1939. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, An important work on the disappearance of Sir John Franklin on his final Arctic Expedition. Very scarce in the dust wrapper and especially in such condition Admiral John Franklin was an English explorer and Royal Navy Officer, who disappeared in 1847 attempting to chart the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. The ships? disappearance was a matter of great interest at the time, with the public supporting Franklin?s wife, Jane, in her search for her husband. Many other ships from both Britain and America went in search of Franklin and his crew, but in the end more men and ships were lost in trying to rescue them. Richard Cyriax has been interested in the Naval Northwest Passage Expedition since childhood, and became an authority on it and John Franklin during his life. This copy has a newspaper cutting loose in the pages, from the Times in May 1983. The article is about divers discovering the ship under an icecap. Condition: In the original publisher?s cloth binding, with the original price clipped dust wrapper. Externally smart. Very light marking to the spine. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Spotting to the fore edge. Offsetting to the front wrap, due to the newspaper clipping. Light edge wear to the dust wrapper, with minor markings to the rear flyleaf. Barcelona: Industrias graficas Seix y Barral Hnos., S. A., 1939. First edition. Softcover. g- to vg. Quarto (9 1/2 x 6 1/2"). 71, [1]pp. Original illustrated wrappers and title page by Flo. Published shortly after the end of the Spanish Civil War, this Nationalist work intends to justify the "more accurate and effective" aerial bombing of Republican held territory by Franco's air force, and condemns the "savage" bombings by the "Reds," accused of targeting civilians and thus waging a war of terror and destruction. However, when the list of the most severely bombed cities during the Spanish Civil War is made, it appears that they are all located in the Republican zone, with the only exception of the Cordovan town of Cabra, whose bombing (the deadliest carried out by the Republican air force during the war) seems to have been the result of a terrible mistake* on the part of the Soviet crews of three «Tupolev SB». Thanks to the spectacular advances of aviation in the 1930s, the aerial bombing of Spanish cities in the Spanish Civil War became a major if not decisive factor to Franco's victory. Since the Spanish military aviation in July 1936 was obsolete, this was only possible because both sides received help from foreign powers that provided their modern bombers. The Nationalists received Savoia-Marchetti 81 and 79 planes from Fascist Italy, as well as Junkers Ju 52 and Heinkel He 111 from Nazi Germany. The Republicans obtained the Soviet "Tupolev SB," less efficient than its fascist counterparts. This book is profusely … [Click Below for Full Description]

Large flag -almost four feet by six feet in dimensions- from the 1939-1940 New York Wold's Fair, displaying the fair's iconic modernist symbols, the Trylon and Perisphere. This flag seems unusual; it does not bear a date, either 1939 or 1940, centered above the words "New York World's Fair." There are also silk ties along the hoist end instead of the more typical brass grommets. The present example may be an early prototype for the New York World's fair. Dated examples of the New York World's Fair official flags, one for each year, can be located, but we find none without a date, and certainly not of this size. Given its large dimensions, this colorful flag was not a souvenir flag; like those manufactured in greatly reduced dimensions and sold to fairgoers. 1. The flag may possibly not be silk, but nylon, just introduced in 1939 at the New York World's Fair. The ties are silk. Ref. NYPL Digital Gallery accessed online.

Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, 1939. Sixty-one different 4.25x5.5 inch booklets, avergage length 25-40 pages, almost all in very good condition. The boxed set sold at the World's Fair contained 58 titles, but some were apparently added in the next year or two, as a complete listing of titles from the April 1941 issue of "Soviet Russia Today" lists 63 in all (a photocopy of that list is included). The booklets missing from this set are "The Jewish Autonomous Region" and "The Soviet Press." Each is authored by an expert in the subject; for example, "The Soviet Screen" is by Eisenstein. Many outstanding examples of cover design; the "Magnitogorsk" is decorated in metallic ink and in blind, with red lettering. "The Moscow Subway" is classical 1930s motif. Two of the polar exploration texts have wraparound woodblock engravings. While most are in very good condition, several have a touch of rust to the staples; Moshkovsky's "Parachute-jumping and gliding" has rusted staples and soiled wraps, and "Soviet youth at work and play" has rubberstamps on the cover indicating it was received by the Labor Research Association in New York in 1940.

The Obelisk Press, 1939. Please go through pictures. This book was acquired by my dad during World War II. All pages are intact. Consult the pictures for the spine. It has a little "wrinkling" and the front cover is loose at the bottom. (I noticed on another listing that one had the same thing--must have been how they put them together in Paris back then.)
