Synopsis Finnegans Wake is a novel by Irish writer James Joyce which is significant for its experimental style and the resulting reputation as one of the most difficult works of fiction in the English language. Written in Paris over a period of seventeen years, and published in 1939, two years before the author's death, Finnegans Wake was Joyce's final work. The entire book is written in a largely idiosyncratic language, consisting of a mixture of standard English lexical items and neologistic multilingual puns and portmanteau words, which many critics believe attempts to recreate the experience of sleep and dreams. Owing to the work's expansive linguistic experiments, stream of consciousness writing style, literary allusions, free dream associations, and its abandonment of the conventions of plot and character construction, Finnegans Wake remains largely unread by the general public. ---------- About … [Click Below for Full Description]

1939. Fine. FITZGERALD, F. SCOTT. Original Typed Letter Signed from F. Scott Fitzgerald. Encino, California: 1 page, quarto, December 26, 1939. Written to Isabel Horton, sister of actor Edward Everett Horton from whom F. Scott Fitzgerald rented a cottage in Encino, California during 1939. Fitzgerald had come to Hollywood to make money screenwriting and collect himself as a writer after series of troubled times. He was very cash strapped and Fitzgerald writes Mrs. Horton and asks her for help. "...Things look a little brighter. My health is better and I really think I am going to work at the studios within a week. All this illness has, however, put me in debt and it may be some months before I am straightened out. In our conversation several weeks ago you mentioned the possibility of temporarily reducing the rent to $150. I believe that at this rental I could carry on here. Is the offer still open? I hate to ask it in this winter season when the valley is at its most attractive, but Miss Kroll [Frances Kroll, his secretary] and I have figured that in order to get straight with the world we will have to cut down on about everything. On the assumption that this offer is open I am enclosing a draft for $150, to cover the rent from December 19th to January 19th. Ever yours, sincerely and gratefully....", then signed in blue ink with autograph postscript "Scott Fitzgerald - Very best to Eddie if you're with him.". [Attributes: Signed Copy]

BENTON, Thomas Hart
Associated American Artists, 1939. Limited Edition. Framed lithograph, whose image measures about 11" x 8.75". Matted and framed in a contemporary (or near-contemporary) silver frame. This is one of 250 limited examples, SIGNED by Benton (as just "Benton") just below the image (also signed in-print). The print is laid on a backing board, and there is paper residue in the margins, though it appears to be untrimmed. The print is not as bright as when new, as it has not spent its whole life out of the sun or protected by UV-protective glass. Presents nicely in its frame, but would need conservation work to be presented in full margins. Does not contain the original AAA backing label (which can be easily consulted online). Elusive in commerce; we note several recent successful auction records, but few if any offered for sale at present. Fath 31. Near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Francis Barry (Londra 1883 - Londra 1970)
1939. Acquatinta misure: foglio mm 720 x 688; lastra mm 618 x 615 Claude Barry, in seguito chiamato Francis Barry è incisore e pittore Britannico. Impressione eccellente, forti contrasti chiaroscurali. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Firmato e datato in basso a destra a matita "Francis Barry 1939". Bibliografia: Campbell, Katie (1990). Derouet Lesacq
1939. Height 23.5" x Width 15.5" This is one of a series of posters created for the Loterie Nationale (National Lottery) in France by a team of artists known as Derouet-Lesacq. In these posters, the element of simplicity is emphasized, allowing the artists to apply detail to the array of environments that these posters are set in. This Art Deco style poster is for the 4th drawing (4th Tranche). The theme of this lottery drawing is trains, as indicated by the text below the image which reads Tranche Ferroviaire (Train Drawing). The image shows a man excitedly jumping on a blue SNCF (National French Railway company) train, about to enjoy an engaging weekend. The French Government promoted a nationwide lottery for many years, and during the 1930 s they commissioned artist Edgar Derouet to create many of their posters. Derouet realized his posters either alone or with one of his many collaborators. This poster is the result of a collaboration with Charles Lesacq, who worked with Derouet from 1938 to 1940. Edgar Derouet (1910-2001) is known for his simplistic, geometric and modern advertising posters for the French Lottery (Loterie Nationale). Derouet was selected by France to create a campaign for the Loterie Nationale because of his well-known reputation as a graphic artist. In his earlier days, Derouet studied with well-known poster artists Paul Colin and George Hamel, allowing him to further perfect his illustration technique. Derouet won an award for Best Poster of the Year in 1936 and was featured at the International Exposition in Paris, France in 1937. Charles Lesacq (19 … [Click Below for Full Description]

In these posters, the element of simplicity is emphasized, allowing the artists to apply detail to the array of environments that these posters are set in. This Art Deco style poster is for the 5th drawing (5th Tranche) as presented on the bell in the image. The theme of this lottery drawing is Easter (Paques). The image shows a man happily ringing a bell, with pink bag of lottery winnings acting as the clapper. This playfully demonstrates a French tradition on Easter known as les cloches de Paques or the ringing of bells on Easter Sunday. 1939. The French Government has promoted a nationwide lottery for many years, and during the 1930s they relied on the artist Derouet to create many of their most popular posters. In this particular image, we see the winner of this historically large sum of money ("Tranche Historique") jumping for joy in celebration. Please note the Art Deco influence in the design. This is the smallest version of this poster. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. Faulkner's moving novel of flight and refuge, later published under his original title, If I Forget Thee, Jerusalem, The Wild Palms tells two interwoven stories. "The Wild Palms" and "Old Man" alternate chapters, each telling a different, but equally captivating tale of a relationship between a man and a woman. "The Wild Palms" ends with one of literature's darkest closing lines, "Between grief and nothing, I will take grief." "For range of effect, philosophical weight, originality of style, variety of characterization, humor, and tragic intensity, [Faulkner's works] are without equal in our time and country." Robert Penn Warren "He is the greatest artist the South has produced. . . . Indeed, through his many novels and short stories, Faulkner fights out the moral problem which was repressed after the nineteenth century [yet] for all his concern with the South, Faulkner was actually seeking out the nature of man. Ludwig Bemelmans
Bemelmans, Ludwig - Madeline - Simon & Schuster: New York, 1939 - 1st Edition / 1st Printing / 1st State Dust Jacket - The "1939" date present on the title page, as well as the copyright page as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. Second and later printings have the date removed from the title page. While not a true point there are 12 girls instead of 11 on the illustration "They went home and broke their bread" as is often mentioned in descriptions. First state dust jacket with no reviews. The book has is soiled, well worn, and read many times. The spine is splitting at the gutters, chipped and appears to have had some stabilization in it's distant past. The binding is still firm and holding together nicely. Internally there are a few stains related to tape in the shape of a square on the verso of the half title page. Otherwise internally this copy is rather clean with no writing, stamps, abrasions or other markings. The first issue dust jacket has had the flaps irregularly trimmed, random stains, a stamp to the front flap, soiling, edge wear and tape mends to numerous areas on the verso. While not a perfect copy this is still a presentable and acceptable example of a rather scarce, oversized, and beloved children's title. Easily Bemelmans' most important and lasting title as the Madeline series has spawned an entire franchise empire across multiple industries. While the issue point of the 12 girls vs 11 IS present in our copy it is worth noting that it is present in all first printings that we have ever encountered. The significant point f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Niels Bohr
USA: American Physical Society, 1939. Very good. The Mechanism of Nuclear Fission, Bohr & Wheeler. On continued gravitational attraction, Oppenheimer & Snyder. Physical Review, Vol. 56, No. 5, September 1, 1939. 1st edition, journal issue, of the first theoretical paper on nuclear fission. In January 1939 Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch, with Bohr's encouragement, published a letter in Nature announcing their discovery of nuclear fission in uranium. The news took the scientific world by storm, with over 100 papers on uranium fission experiments appearing in the next twelve months, but Bohr was the only one during this period to publish on the theoretical aspects of this phenomenon. Collaborating with American physicist John A. Wheeler, Bohr worked out in great detail the complete theory of nuclear fission, publishing the results in the present paper. Paper on pages 426-450. In very good condition. This volume also contains Oppenheimer & Snyder's "On continued gravitational contraction", which constitutes the first theoretical prediction of a singularity when a sufficiently large neutron star collapses, a phenomenon now known as the formation of a black hole. Paper on pages 455-459. Some repaired tears with no loss of text, otherwise in very good condition. Two important papers in one volume; green cloth boards with brown leather spine, gilt lettering. Guaranteed as described. [Attributes: First Edition]
