QANTAS] Robey, George and Blanche; aka Sir George Edward Wade
1939. An album containing many photographs of the voyage made by Robey, known as the "Prime Minister of Mirth" and his wife Blanche by ship to Australia in 1939, with return journey via airplane (Imperial Airways), necessitated by the beginning of the Second World War. The album concludes with the Robeys emergency trip back to London. The album opens with large b&w photographs of the happy departure, hand captioned by Mrs. Robey. She writes, "G & I on board at Tilbury (Strathallan) en route to Australia, July 1939", above a large image of the couple smiling and waving from the deck. This is followed by 2 more images of Mrs. Robey on the HMS Rodney, "B. R. with Captain & Officers, taken by G. R. early 30ties (sic)". There are many amusing original snap shots (some with hand written captions) of George larking about in Australia, posing with emu, kangaroos ("kangaroo & baby in pouch, Koala Farm, Sydney, Sept. 1929"), parrots, and visiting natural sites such as Mt. Dandenong Observatory. Studio shots include: Australian cockatoos; felling gum tree; laughing jackass kookaburra; dairy herd; platypus; lyre bird; flowering gum; and a signed photograph entitled, "The Fairies Tree, Carved by Ola Cohn" (signed Ola Cohn in ink below the caption). Ola Cohn (1892 - 1964) was a noted Australian sculptor and philanthropist, best known for the Fairies' Tree in the Fitzroy Gardens which she sculpted in the early 1930s and dedicated to the children of Melbourne. There is a wide array of documentation from the trip, including early Qantas Airways papers, some dated after the declaration of wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Budapest: Printed by Pester Lloyd/ Kiss Gyorgy, 1939. Softcover. near fine. Small quarto. 9 1/4 x 6". 6pp. Staple-bound. This pamphet is comprised of the entire printed text, in English, of the Antisemitic "Second Jewish Law", enacted by the Hugarian parliament on May 5th 1939. This was likely printed as a supplement to the Pester Lloyd, the leading German-laguage newspaper in Hungary (1854-1945). The Second Jewish Law, here referred to as "The New Hungarian Jewish Bill", is divided into 21 provisions, and for the first time strictly defined who was considered a "Jew". After this first section, defining Jews according to the law, the bill continues in the other sections to detail even more restrictions on Hungarian Jews in terms of professions, further amending and modifying the quotas and regulations first laid out and defined in the previously enacted "First Jewish Law" of May 29th 1938. Dicussed are banning or restricing Jews from serving or working in a wide rage of feilds including government, art, entertainment, law, medicine, engeneering and the press among many others. Text in English. In near fine condition overall. Extremely scarce. Protected by modern mylar. *The Pester Lloyd (originally printed from 1854-1945), was known as among the few German-language newspapers to openly criticise Nazi antisemitic policies, considering that it was outside the influence of the Third Reich until the late 1930s.

Dorothea Lange
New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1939. First edition (first printing). Blue cloth with gold lettering on the cover and spine, in a very good example of the (probable) second-issue dust jacket with the Voltaire quote on the rear panel. The jacket shows edgewear and is missing small chips along the top and bottom edge. The blank rear jacket flap is missing a four-by-four-inch triangle from the bottom corner. A note on the two variant dust jackets, one with a Voltaire quote and the other with advertisements for other books from the publisher: The (probable) first issue jacket with ads is often referred to as having an ad for Mein Kampf, which it does, but that is likely irrelevant. The publisher had been selling Hitler's book in English translation for a year at the time. The copyright for American Exodus was filed at the Library of Congress on Dec. 29, 1939, and the deposit copies arrived in Washington, DC, in early January 1940. The back cover of the jacket with ads has a listing for Your Jewish Neighbor. An American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion Dorothea Lange. First Edition 158 pages. 7-3/4 by 10-1/4 inches. One of the most significant works to come out of the New Deal's Farm Security Administration. Black-and-white reproductions of Depression-era photographs of the American South, the Dust Bowl, and American migrants in California are paired with quotes from people in the circumstances pictured. [Various places, including Panama, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, 1939. Very good.. 364 original photographs, most 2 x 2.5 inches, several larger, on forty-eight leaves. Bound in a half cloth and card stock office folder. Spine perishing, rear board detached. Album leaves slightly curled. Photos fine, and extensively captioned. A comprehensive photo diary of an August to October 1939 voyage to Nicaragua and several other countries in Central America by way of Haiti, with almost 375 original images, likely as part of an effort to scout a new route for an oft-contemplated canal across Nicaragua. The traveling group departed from New York City after visiting the World's Fair at the beginning of August, 1939, and briefly debarked at Part-au-Prince on their way to Colon, Panama. The first short series of photos contains images of several men of the party on board and of their stop in Haiti. The group arrived in Colon on August 16, the following group of approximately twenty-five images depict scenes there and in Panama City, including several of the Canal and the ruins of Old Panama. On August 21, the party flew from Albrook Airfield in the Canal Zone to Managua in Nicaragua. The vast majority of photos in the album chronicle time the group spent in Nicaragua from late August to early October. The first set of photos document their experience in Managua and several neighboring cities and towns, including Diriamba, Leon, and Granada. For most of September, the group traveled along sections of the San Juan River, which runs from Lake Cocibolca to the Atlantic Ocean, fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[African-American Photographica]
Atlanta: Photo by Kelly, 1939. Original photographic print, 12 x 18 1/4 inches. Black and white unmounted photograph captioned in the negative. Right and left margins trimmed; three closed tears at margins slightly affecting image. Old tape at corners, minor creasing. Good. A large photographic portrait of the twenty-two "undaunted" graduates of the Grady Municipal Training School for Colored Nurses for 1939. The women stand on the steps of the school, with a number of large floral bouquets arrayed before them. All are dressed in their nursing uniforms, and each holds her diploma and what appears to be a small gift. A middle-aged white woman - likely the students' instructor or supervisor - stands behind the group. The Grady Memorial Hospital School of Nursing was chartered in 1898, and the Municipal Training School for Colored Nurses was organized in 1914 by black nursing pioneer Ludie Andrews, to improve health conditions for African Americans in the Deep South. The school was under the direction of the (white) School of Nursing from 1922 until 1965, when the two schools were integrated. Schumpeter, Joseph A
McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., New York, 1939. First edition of the economist's ground-breaking work. Octavo, 2 volumes. Original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper of volume one, "To Seymour Harris with kind regards Joseph Schumpeter." Some light rubbing to the bottom of the cloth, a near fine set of this landmark work. The recipient, Harvard economics professor Seymour Harris, was an editor of the book, Schumpeter as Social Scientist and editor of The New Economics; which Schumpeter was a contributor. Books signed by Schumpeter are extremely rare and virtually unobtainable. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Schumpeter’s theory of business cycles puts its emphasis on industrial innovations rather than banking. Schumpeter starts his account of business cycles at the top rather than the bottom of the cycle. "The reader needs only to make the experiment. If he comes to survey industrial history from, say, 1760 onwards, he will discover two things; he will find that very many booms are unmistakably characterized by revolutionary changes in some branch of industry which, in consequence, leads the boom, railways, for instance in the forties, or steel in the eighties, or electricity in the nineties." Sauk City, WI, Arkham House, 1939. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy of the first book from Arkham House, a highlight of Arkham collecting and modern speculative fiction. An important book, and a catalyst for the subsequent decades of Lovecraft study and influence. Lovecraft was an influence on not just the genre of the weird and horror, but further afield to literature in general from Borges to Philip K. Dick. His influence and influencers has been the subject of a book in itself. Without Arkham house, and particularly the present title, the landscape would've been much changed. One of only 1200 published copies. Gathers together many now well-known works including Dagon, At the Mountains of Madness, The Call of Cthulhu , The Shadow over Innsmouth, Polaris and The Haunter of the Dark. A key work. The book itself is in very good condition. The jacket has chipping and wear to the fore corners, and one triangular puncture near the head of the spine, mostly closed. One short tear nearby. Some wear to the lower spine tip. The book is in very nice shape, nothing to comment on regarding condition other than the ownership signature of Paul Spencer to the front paste-down. Spencer was a writer and editor himself and collaborated with David Keller. Spencer went on to edit the James Branch Cabell journal Kalki. A very presentable copy of a landmark work. Offered in after-market slipcase. Cover art by Virgil Finlay [6505, Hyraxia Books].All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate.
