Niels Bohr
USA: American Physical Society, 1939. Very good. The Mechanism of Nuclear Fission, Bohr & Wheeler. On continued gravitational attraction, Oppenheimer & Snyder. Physical Review, Vol. 56, No. 5, September 1, 1939. 1st edition, journal issue, of the first theoretical paper on nuclear fission. In January 1939 Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch, with Bohr's encouragement, published a letter in Nature announcing their discovery of nuclear fission in uranium. The news took the scientific world by storm, with over 100 papers on uranium fission experiments appearing in the next twelve months, but Bohr was the only one during this period to publish on the theoretical aspects of this phenomenon. Collaborating with American physicist John A. Wheeler, Bohr worked out in great detail the complete theory of nuclear fission, publishing the results in the present paper. Paper on pages 426-450. In very good condition. This volume also contains Oppenheimer & Snyder's "On continued gravitational contraction", which constitutes the first theoretical prediction of a singularity when a sufficiently large neutron star collapses, a phenomenon now known as the formation of a black hole. Paper on pages 455-459. Some repaired tears with no loss of text, otherwise in very good condition. Two important papers in one volume; green cloth boards with brown leather spine, gilt lettering. Guaranteed as described. [Attributes: First Edition]

Dower, L
Willam Blackwood. First. Hardcover. 263 pp, ill, Dower, L. EPIC FAILURE 1939 London 263 pp, ill. Safari in Kenya and Tanganyika. For a mainly photographic safari this is good reading. They shot their own trophies to use as bait and then had to figure out how to set up the bait to attract the lions and leopards in the best possible angles. They had numerous encounters with lion, elephant, rhino and also buffalo and of course the plains game which they shot regularly. After the safari, it was discovered that much of the film was bad and many photos did not come out, hence the title. Will be enjoyed by anyone thinking of taking an adventurous photo safari. Lovely copy, signed by the author, bound in half leather, highly decorated in gilt with raised spine bands. Near Fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Anonyme ; Collectif

Trumbo, Dalton
J. B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, 1939. First edition of Trumbo's powerful novel, which won one of the early National Book Awards: the Most Original Book of 1939. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Dalton Trumbo on the half-title page. Near fine in the original dust jacket with rubbing and wear, lacking the front flap. Rare and desirable signed. "In what is probably the most effective anti-war statement in American literature, Johnny Got His Gun, Trumbo relates the attempt of a soldier who lost his limbs and the power of all his physical senses, except touch, to communicate his convictions about the Great World War to those already preparing for the next one (Allen, 1386-87). One of Hollywood's premiere screenwriters, Trumbo was blacklisted and jailed for contempt of Congress in 1950, and in 1960 "became the first blacklisted screenwriter to be publicly reinstated" with screen credits in both Exodus and Spartacus. "During his early years as a screenwriter, Trumbo published several novels. Johnny was a great success, winning the American Booksellers Award in 1940. It received considerable renewed attention during the Vietnam War era, and in 1971 Trumbo wrote, directed and partly financed a film version of the book. The film won the Cannes Prix Special du Jury and many other awards" (ANB). The film stars Timothy Bottoms, Kathy Fields, Marsha Hunt, Jason Robards, Donald Sutherland and Diane Varsi. Miller, Henry
Obelisk Press, Paris, 1939. First edition, one of only 1000 copies printed in Paris, to avoid obscenity laws in the United States. Octavo, original red and white wrappers. Association copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "To Henry Church with best wishes, Henry Miller 5/5/39." Henry Church and his wife Barbara were patrons of the arts in 1930s-40s France, and were friends with many of the important writers of the era. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the fragile wrappers. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed example of this cornerstone of modern literature. Tropic of Capricorn, with its focus on on Henry Miller's Brooklyn youth, concludes his famed autobiographical trilogy--following Tropic of Cancer (1934) and Black Spring (1936). Once hailed by Norman Mailer as "the last great American pioneer," Miller sparked much controversy over the novel's explicit descriptions of sexual encounters. "Although his two most important works, Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, were published in Paris in the 1930s, because of their heavy sexual content, they were not published in the United States until the early 1960s, when Miller's work became the leading battlefield in the war over 'pornographic' literature" (Hoffman, 108). With first issue price of 60 francs printed on the spine. With errata slip, often not found, tipped to title page. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Marshall Valentine Hartranft
Los Angeles: DeVorss & Co. M.V. Hartranft-THE GRAPES OF GLADNESS-1st ed/printing-1939-DeVorss Publishers. Described as "California's refreshing and inspiring answer to John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath." Book is 3/4 blue plaid boards with black cloth and gilt lettering on spine in fine condition. Some foxing on end papers and rubbing on corners. Gray dust jacket with blue lettering and illustration is very good with some spine fading and small chips off top and bottom. Hartranft's book is touted as a humorous counterpoint to the Grapes of Wrath and in it spoke of the "communistic implications of Steinbeck's notoriously inaccurate novel and that social revolution is the sinister suggestion emanating from the Grapes of Wrath. 127 tanned pages that include an addenda with reviews (also printed on the back cover} that support Hartranft's views. Winston S. Churchill
The World Crisis: 1911-1918 Winston S. Churchill London: Odhams Press Limited, 1939 2-volume edition, in original publisher's shipping boxes Condition: Fine Here is a rare time capsule for collectors - the first two-volume edition of Winston Churchill's history of the First World War, still housed in the publisher's original shipping boxes. Churchill was in a special position to write the history of the First World War, which nearly cost him both his political and corporeal lives and in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the Dardanelles disaster, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent political exile as a lieutenant colonel of a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, foreshadowing the political isolation and restoration he would experience nearly two decades later leading up to the Second World War. Despite Churchill's political recovery, the stigma of the Dardanelles lingered. Hence Churchill had more than just literary and financial compulsion to write his history. Churchill titled his history The World Crisis, which was originally published in six volumes between 1923 and 1931. This first two-volume set was published in 1939, the year the Second World War began and Churchill returned to the Admiralty and to war. Though only two volumes, this set contains not only the complete unabridged text of the original first four volumes (which covered the war years 1911-1918), but also the revisions and new material from … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Some chipping, creasing, minor staining, and occasional closed tears, with repaired tears to each vertical edge, and minor loss to right edge. Still, a good image considering its size. An extraordinary and obscure seventeen-foot panoramic photograph highlighting the modernist architecture of the international zone of the 1939 New York World's Fair. The photograph presents a 360-degree view around the Lagoon of Nations, starting at the Belgian Pavilion at left, scanning across the statuary-filled fountains in Constitution Mall (with the Heinz 57 exhibit and the Trylon and Perisphere at the Theme Centre in the background), past the French Pavilion, the first Foreign Pavilion, across the Court of Peace (with the U.S. Government building in the deep background), the second Foreign Pavilion (with mounted lettering for Romania and a banner for Japan hanging on the front), and ending at the Czechoslovakian pavilion at far right. The Soviet Pavilion is not pictured, as it was one of the last exhibits completed before the opening of the fair on April 30, 1939; this fact also helps us date the photograph. Several workman and men in suits, and a handful of automobiles are pictured, with some of the people taking notice of the camera. A printed notice, which appears twice near the bottom edge of the photograph reads, "This is the largest direct photograph ever made! It is not an enlarged or pieced picture, but the actual negative size. It was made by Charles F. & Gabriel Allen and they have specialized in pan … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Reichspropagandaleitung:

Steinbeck, John
Viking Press, 1939. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Historic association copy. A very good first edition in a very good first issue dust jacket, inscribed by Steinbeck to David Zablodowsky, the notorious Russian spy in the State Department who confessed after being exposed by fellow spy Whittaker Chambers and was subject to attack from Joe McCarthy. David Zablodowsky was Senator Joseph McCarthy's Case Number 103. Zablodowsky worked in the State Department and later as Director of the United Nations Publishing Division. After Chambers gave testimony before the McCarran Committee regarding Zablodowsky's activities on October 23, 1952 Zablodowsky admitted his involvement. Inscribed by Steinbeck on the front free endpaper. Very good dust jacket has First Edition stated on front flap. Slight moisture discoloration in lower corner of some early pages. EDWARD ARDIZZONE British Pubs RARE
London: Cassell & Co, Ltd, 1939, 1939. First Edition, First Printing. Original grey boards printed in red and black. Small chip to head of spine. A Very Good+ copy. With 15 four-colour lithographic plates, including one double-page. First edition, sole impression. "Ardizonne's illustrations are generally concerned with contemporary life untouched by political, religious or ideological conflicts. His approach is not satiric or moralistic but autobiographical, and his drawings are representational and humourous and demonstrate his affection for people" (The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators). The Ardizzone illustrations, printed at the Curwen Press in stunning chromolithography, retain their vitality. Among the named pubs illustrated are the Spread Eagle in Thame, the Warrington in Maida Vale, the Red Lion at Barnes, the Goat just off Bond Street. The text, together with the Glossary of Terms commonly used in connection with the London Pubs, remain a wonderful insight and are added to by the wonderful Ardizzone lithos. Famous for its 15 colour lithographs by Edward Ardizzone, this is a very rare book and a beautifully illustrated 'guide' to pubs. A very rare title to find in any collectable condition and a key Ardizzone title. The book's scarcity has long been anecdotally attributed within the book trade to the bomb damage inflicted on Cassell's premises during the Blitz. Whether this is true or not, it remains a scarce book, especially in this condition. The two flaps from the VERY RARE dust jacket are loosley laid in. [Attributes: First Edition]
