Paris, Claude Simon for François Didot, 1744. 2 volumes. 12mo. With two folding engraved maps by F. Desbruslins after Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, showing the American Atlantic coast and the route of the journey. Contemporary mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spine.

Alden & Landis 744/180; Gove, The imaginary voyage, pp. 310-311; Sabin 65412. First edition of a fictional account of travels through Africa, Asia and the Americas. It describes the travels of its supposed author, an English mariner called Robert Lade, in his quest for profit and adventure. Along the way, Lade meets several nonfictional mariners and the book even contains a pastiche of the story of Alexander Selkirk, claiming he was actually called Selcrag. Its authentic effect is enhanced by a pair of maps by the eminent cartographer Bellin and several lists and tables, including the exchange rate for beaver pelts in the Hudson Bay, a vocabulary of native words, and multiple pages with the geographic coordinates of all the remarkable places on the west coast of the Americas. It is presented as a translation from the English done by the eminent translator Prévost. It was considered an authoritative source for two centuries, with Buffon, d'Alembert and Jules Verne all quoting from the book, until it was proved to be a pastiche in 1939.Despite Robert Lade being a fictional character, Prévost wrote a reliable travel account based on numerous genuine sources. Since the story involves Lade's son in the founding of the new American colony of Georgia, the book gives an extensive account of the early years of that colony. Sections describing the arrival in Georgia and explorations near the Hudson Bay where probably taken from the writing of James Oglethorpe, the colony's founder. With contemporary owners' inscriptions. Binding rubbed at the extremities and at the head of the spine. Volume 1 with a small tear in the map and several spots throughout, volume 2 with a small piece missing at the foot of the front flyleaves and some foxing on the final 4 pages; overall good copies.

Description des plantes nouvelles et peu connues, cultivées dans le jardin de J.M. Cels.Paris, Crapelet, an VIII[-X] [= 1800-1803]. 4to (32.5 x 25 cm). With 100 engraved plates of plants, including 60 after drawings by Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Contemporary dark blue half sheepskin, gold-tooled spine.

Nissen BBI, 2048; Cat. Redoutéana 7; Stearn,"Ventenat's 'Description des plantes de J. M. Cels,' 'Jardin de la Malmaison,' and 'Choix des plantes'", in: Journal of the Society for the Bibliography of Natural History I (1939), pp. 199-201. Beautifully illustrated catalogue of "new and little known plants" from the garden of Jacques Philippe Martin Cels in Paris. Originally published in ten instalments between 1800 and 1803, the book presents 100 rare species from Cels's garden, most of them illustrated by Pierre-Joseph Redouté and his brother Henri-Joseph. Cels operated a commercial nursery in Montrouge, just south of Paris, where he collected and sold numerous rare species. Among the species in his garden and reproduced in the catalogue were exotics from North America, Africa, the Near East and the Pacific. Many of the species described in the catalogue originated from the Middle East, including one discovered during Napoleon Bonaparte's Egyptian expedition.Among the 100 plants, are ten species from Australia, all wintering in the greenhouse, including types of Mimosa, Goodenia, Bassiaea, Casuarina, Metrosideros, Embothrium and Melaleuca. Seven of these were drawn by Redouté and this publication gave five their first scientific notice. The wars between Britain and France following the French Revolution of 1789, had made Australian species very rare on the European continent. The Australian species in the Description des plantes were nevertheless acquired after 1792, with Cels's garden subsequently being an important source for other botanical gardens on the continent.Jacques Philippe Martin Cels had originally been a tax collector at the Paris barriers. With the French Revolution leaving him out of trade, he converted his hobby garden into one of the foremost commercial nurseries in Europe, providing numerous species for, among others, the Empress Josephine's garden at Malmaison.Binding worn at the extremities and spine damaged; a small hole at the spine with a larger hole visible from plate 91 onwards. With a few stains throughout, a water stain in the gutter margin of the first half of the book and a larger one at the head of the gutter margin of the last third of the book; some minor damage to several of the tissues with the tissue for plate 79 lacking. Still a very good and attractive copy with the plates in crisp impressions and printed on heavy paper.

Vie de S. François Xavier apotre des Indes et du Japon. Nouvelle edition. Lyon, Paris, Perisse Frères, 1836. 2 volumes. 12mo. First volume with engraved portrait of Xavier as frontispiece. Contemporary sprinkled calf with gilt spine and red title-label lettered in gold, blue marbled endpapers.

      G. Smith (ed.), Jesuit thinkers of the Renaissance (1939), pp. 63-74; this ed. not in De Backer & Sommervogel; Cordier, Bibl. Japonica; Alt-Japan-Kat. Rare edition of a well-known and much reprinted life of François Xavier (1506-1552) by Dominique Bouhours (1628-1702), a French Jesuit priest, essayist and neo-classical critic best known to English readers for his lives of Ignatius of Loyola (Paris, 1679), and the present François Xavier (Paris, 1682). Xavier's life is especially interesting for his travels and work as a missionary in Japan and elsewhere in the Far East. The first edition with the present augmentations appeared in 1826. Spine of volume 1 somewhat worn and slightly damaged at the top; school prize for Alexis Montens from Malines as pupil of the College d'Alost, dated 18 August 1841, in both volumes tipped in; library stamp on title-pages. Fine set of a popular biography of the famous 16th-century missionary in Japan and the Far East.

The Limited Editions Club Shakespeare: Complete Tragedies, Histories, and Comedies of William Shakespeare, complete in 39 volumes, INCLUDING two-volume complete Poems, in slipcase

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1939-1940. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Tall quarto, 37 volumes, plus 2-volume Poems set. Each volume includes the original prospectus, laid in (save for a few titles, which were not issued with prospectus). Lacking the wax paper dust jackets. However, overall a very near fine set, crisp, charp, and tight, with only the most gentle fading to the cream cloth spines in general (see images and feel free to request more). Top edge gilt, uncut pages. Henry the Fifth has a small ding to the top of the text block, else as nice as the other volumes. Two volume Poems in slipcase, as issued (slipcase is good or better with some wear at the extremities, including to the label). Each volume is hand-numbered 958 (out of 1,950 copies printed), including the poetry set, which is signed by Bruce Rogers. Though the collector's dream is or course to find a set with complete wax paper dust jackets and slipcases, this is an excellent substitute, considering the mildness of the spine fading, sharp square corners, and still-present prospectuses. NOTE: While this is a very heavy set, which will involve two large, heavy boxes at minimum for shipping, I will not charge more than $60 in extra shipping within the continental United States for USPS Priority Mail. If you live somewhere within a few hours of Cleveland, please contact me directly before ordering to arrange a local delivery/meetup.

        Finnegan's Wake.

London: Faber & Faber, 1939. First edition of which 3400 copies were printed, 950 later destroyed. Octavo, original red cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a closed tear. A very nice example. Joyce began working on Finnegans Wake shortly after the 1922 publication of Ulysses. By 1924 installments of Joyce's new avant-garde work began to appear, in serialized form, in Parisian literary journals transatlantic review and transition, under the title "fragments from Work in Progress". The actual title of the work remained a secret until the book was published in its entirety, on 4 May 1939. The work has assumed a preeminent place in English literature. Anthony Burgess praised the book as "a great comic vision, one of the few books of the world that can make us laugh aloud on nearly every page."[14] Harold Bloom called the book "Joyce's masterpiece", and wrote that "[if] aesthetic merit were ever again to center the canon [Finnegans Wake] would be as close as our chaos could come to the heights of Shakespeare and Dante." Modern Library named it one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

No copies currently listed for sale, and WorldCat does not show any institutional holdings. The International Society for Japanese Philately reports four volumes for 1940 to 1943 in its holdings, but only one issue (No. 3, May, 1939) from the first volume. The publisher of this journal, The Japanese Postage Stamp Association, was founded in January, 1939, with the support of the Japanese Government Postal Administration and Baron Takaharu Mitsui (known as the "Father of Japanese stamp collecting" and who was the first President of the JPSA). The binding of the bound copy which we offer for sale shows some wear. It is shaken, and the hinges are starting to crack but are still holding. Each of the monthly magazines is bound in with its title page, and each issue is in very good condition. Note: there are no records of this important philatelic journal ever having come to auction. .
