The Limited Editions Club Shakespeare: Complete Tragedies, Histories, and Comedies of William Shakespeare, complete in 39 volumes, INCLUDING two-volume complete Poems, in slipcase

New York: The Limited Editions Club, 1939-1940. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Tall quarto, 37 volumes, plus 2-volume Poems set. Each volume includes the original prospectus, laid in (save for a few titles, which were not issued with prospectus). Lacking the wax paper dust jackets. However, overall a very near fine set, crisp, charp, and tight, with only the most gentle fading to the cream cloth spines in general (see images and feel free to request more). Top edge gilt, uncut pages. Henry the Fifth has a small ding to the top of the text block, else as nice as the other volumes. Two volume Poems in slipcase, as issued (slipcase is good or better with some wear at the extremities, including to the label). Each volume is hand-numbered 958 (out of 1,950 copies printed), including the poetry set, which is signed by Bruce Rogers. Though the collector's dream is or course to find a set with complete wax paper dust jackets and slipcases, this is an excellent substitute, considering the mildness of the spine fading, sharp square corners, and still-present prospectuses. NOTE: While this is a very heavy set, which will involve two large, heavy boxes at minimum for shipping, I will not charge more than $60 in extra shipping within the continental United States for USPS Priority Mail. If you live somewhere within a few hours of Cleveland, please contact me directly before ordering to arrange a local delivery/meetup.

        Finnegan's Wake.

London: Faber & Faber, 1939. First edition of which 3400 copies were printed, 950 later destroyed. Octavo, original red cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a closed tear. A very nice example. Joyce began working on Finnegans Wake shortly after the 1922 publication of Ulysses. By 1924 installments of Joyce's new avant-garde work began to appear, in serialized form, in Parisian literary journals transatlantic review and transition, under the title "fragments from Work in Progress". The actual title of the work remained a secret until the book was published in its entirety, on 4 May 1939. The work has assumed a preeminent place in English literature. Anthony Burgess praised the book as "a great comic vision, one of the few books of the world that can make us laugh aloud on nearly every page."[14] Harold Bloom called the book "Joyce's masterpiece", and wrote that "[if] aesthetic merit were ever again to center the canon [Finnegans Wake] would be as close as our chaos could come to the heights of Shakespeare and Dante." Modern Library named it one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.

Tokyo, Japan: Japan Postage Stamp Assoc.. Bound in green buckram with faded Japanese lettering to spine. 1939. 1st printings. 8vo, A complete run for the year 1939. No copies currently listed for sale, and WorldCat does not show any institutional holdings. The International Society for Japanese Philately reports four volumes for 1940 to 1943 in its holdings, but only one issue (No. 3, May, 1939) from the first volume. The publisher of this journal, The Japanese Postage Stamp Association, was founded in January, 1939, with the support of the Japanese Government Postal Administration and Baron Takaharu Mitsui (known as the "Father of Japanese stamp collecting" and who was the first President of the JPSA). The binding of the bound copy which we offer for sale shows some wear. It is shaken, and the hinges are starting to crack but are still holding. Each of the monthly magazines is bound in with its title page, and each issue is in very good condition. Note: there are no records of this important philatelic journal ever having come to auction. .

Bound in green cloth with matching topstain and orange patterned endpapers. Spine cloth imperceptibly toned, spine gilt slightly dulled, with a few scattered spots of foxing to the side of the textblock. The jacket is a Near Fine example, reproducing the original artwork of the First Modern Library edition (1934). Price of 95 cents on the front flap, and mention of 265 titles both on the verso and rear panel; Toledano dates it circa 1939. Spine panel moderately toned, with some lighter toning, wear, and three tiny pin-sized holes along the flap folds. The success of the 1941 film propelled the book's popularity back into the heart of American culture; The Modern Library sold about 27,000 copies during the decade. Scarce.
