Bunyah. Gedichte mit Photographien von Barbara Klemm. Vom Autor signierte Erstausgabe

[Books into Film] Goodbye to Berlin [Sally Bowles]

London: Hogarth Press, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. First Impression of these "Brilliant sketches of a society in decay" (Orwell). 8vo: 317,[1]pp. Publisher's coarsely woven oatmeal-colored cloth, spine stamped crimson with matching top-stain. Near Fine, cloth and edges dust-soiled, lettering slightly faded, but pages clean, tight and bright. According to Woolmer (451), only 3350 copies were printed. Connolly 86. A series of six loosely interconnected character sketches that unfold against the backdrop of the doomed Weimar Republic. Despite Isherwood's disclaimer, Goodbye to Berlin is firmly rooted in his biography; all the principle characters were inspired by people he had known. Isherwood originally envisioned a sweeping Tolstoyan novel combining the characters from Goodbye to Berlin and Mr. Norris Changes Trains (in fact, both novels are often packaged as The Berlin Stories and both were later adapted for stage and film, most memorably in the Tony Award-winning musical Cabaret [1966] and the film of the same name [1972], for which Liza Minnelli won an Academy Award. "Written in the shadow of the Second World War, [Goodbye to Berlin] offers a valedictory portrait of the demimonde of Berlin, commemorating the 'decadent' bars and nightclubs that were subsequently closed by the Nazis, and immortalizing the people-Jews and homosexuals-who were most at risk under the Third Reich." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

The Seven Lady Godivas: The True Facts Concerning History's Barest Family -- INSCRIBED TO AN EARLY SUPPORTER

New York: Random House 1939 - [80] p. illus.; 26 cm. Very good or better in a lightly worn original dustwrapper with shelfwear to spine extremities. A fine example of the rare die-cut bookmark originally distributed with the book is laid in. Inscribed by the author: "To Josephine Kimball Godiva, with very best thanks, Dr. Seuss." A wonderful association. In 1929, Josephine Dodge Kimball, a graduate of Miss Chapin's School and Bryn Mawr, founded Young Books, a shop on Madison Avenue, with her former classmate Joan Whitney Payson. Both women were from prominent families, a fact that delighted the press. "Society Women Plan Children's Bookshop," ran the headline in the New York Times, and similar notices ran in the pages of Life and the Saturday Review of Literature. Their connections brought the store instant fame. In 1931, Time reported that a manuscript by Einstein was presented to Yale University amid great ceremony at Young Books, with Kimball, Payson, and the physicist in attendance. But the shop quickly rose above the celebrity of its proprietors. Kimball's judiciously selected stock of books, art, and toys were often featured in the "On and Off the Avenue" shopping column in the New Yorker. In 1929, the store supplemented its literary offerings with "nursery trifles, [and] a circulating library for children." By 1944, the store had expanded to include a gallery, a rare book room, an adult book department, and a mail-order business that sent catalogues to 25,000 customers. Kimball enjoyed a prominent position in literary circles, serving as an officer of the American Bookseller's Association and sitting on prize committees; she was one of only two women on the board of Armed Services Editions. She also contributed reviews of children's books to magazines such as Harper's and Scribner's. In this capacity, she gave an important boost to Dr. Seuss's first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. In a column on Christmas gift books for the December 1937 Scribners Magazine, Kimball singled out his "delicious exposé of a small boy's tall tale" for special praise as "a most unusual and amusing contribution to juvenilia which will be thoroughly appreciated by adults." The publication of The Seven Lady Godivas coincided with the tenth anniversary of Young Books. Kimball celebrated both with a cocktail party for 150 people on October 18th (the occasion, no doubt, for the presentation of this copy). The guests of honor included Geisel, Ludwig Bemelmans, and Clement Hurd. Original drawings by each were hung, and their new books displayed in the shop windows. Noting that Seuss's art featuring "history's barest family" was prominently featured at the affair, Publisher's Weekly remarked, "it was not a children's cocktail party." Regrettably, not even the enthusiastic support of Josephine Kimball could save The Seven Lady Godivas. In his 1960 profile on Seuss for the New Yorker, E. J. Kahn summed it up: "Geisel has produced only one book that was aimed at an unequivocally grownup audience. It was an unequivocal flop." That his publishers were chary about the project is indicated by the warning on the dustwrapper flap. Identifying Seuss as "the author of two tremendously successful juveniles," the publishers noted that this one "belongs in a very different category." Which category, however? The book was neither the red fish of children's literature, nor the fowl of erotica. Seuss acknowledged the risk taken by his editor by a detail in the endpaper illustration: nailed to the Godiva family tree is a small bucket of sap labelled "Bennett Cerf." Random House limited investment in the book by printing only 10,000 copies (by contrast, the initial print run on his first book was 15,000 copies). Only 2500 sold, and the book fell out of print and into obscurity for almost 50 years. In conversation with Kahn, Geisel reflected, "I think maybe it all went to prove that I don't know anything about adults." [Attributes: First Edition]

        A Considerable Speck

Dard Hunter, Jr., Cambridge, MA 1939 - An impressive, early effort by Dard Hunter, Jr., offering up this first separate edition of Frost's delivered poem at the Annual Dinner of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts on November 21st, 1939. A folio, in this case constituting a single folded, printed sheet (with its original accompanying tissue-guard protecting the text). Clean, well-preserved and VG+ to Near Fine in its off-white wrapper, with just a touch of creasing along the top-edges. Laid-in is the publisher's boroadside, which gives a succinct accounting of how this piece came to be: Robert Frost's recital of the poem "has been printed by Mr. Dard Hunter, Jr. from the first font of type that he has cut and cast himself, and is one of his first pieces of printing. It is on hand-made paper, made by him and his father, an authority on paper, with whom he is associated at the Dard Hunter Paper Museum at Massachusetts Institute of Technology."         The Castle [Das Schloss]

London: Secker & Warburg, 1939. Early Reprint. Hardcover. Fine-. Translated from the German by Willa and Edwin Muir. 8vo: xii,395,[1]pp. Publisher's French blue finely woven cloth, upper cover and spine lettered in gilt, correct typographic dust jacket designated second edition and priced 7s/6d. About Fine, with hint of fading to blue spine; crisp prewar dust jacket, with spine panel slightly toned. Second Edition of Franz Kafka's great novel (his third and final) of alienation and the overweening state. Kafka began writing The Castle on the evening of 27 January 1922, the day he arrived at the mountain sanitarium of Spindlermühle (now in the Czech Republic). He died before finishing the novel and it is questionable whether he intended to finish had he survived his tuberculosis. The Castle was originally published in German in 1926 by Joella Goodman of Munich, selling fewer than the 1500 copies, then four years later, in London, in an English translation by Martin Secker (the first of Kafka's books to appear in English, preceding editions of The Trial and Metamorphosis by some seven years). It was republished in German in 1935 by Schocken Verlag in Berlin, and again in English in 1946 by Schocken Books of New York. "The Castle has neither the broad picaresque canvas of the America novel, nor the dramatic urgency of The Trial, but instead presents us with a study of character and situation in which the smallest details acquire significance. . . . The novel contains esoteric references to the Bible, Greek mythology, and Jewish mysticism, and is thought to reflect Kafka's interest in Schopenhauer and Kierkegaard, which had informed a series of aphorisms he had written in 1917-1918. . . ."         [Der Zauberberg] Magic Mountain, The [Signed]

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine+. First Printing ("Published May 6, 1929. One-Volume Edition, October 1939") of this first one-volume edition of Mann's masterpiece, one of the most influential works of 20th century German literature. Translated into English from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter. Thick 8vo: [10],900pp. Publisher's finely woven slate-blue cloth, spine stamped in gilt, Mann's monogram in blind to upper cover, top edge stained pale yellow, illustrated dust jacket (price-clipped). Signed by the author in blue ink on the front fly leaf. A Fine unread copy, square and tight; better than Near Fine jacket with brief edge wear. "In 1929, Thomas Mann received the Nobel Prize for literature. In the laudatio his second great novel, Der Zauberberg [The Magic Mountain, 1924], was not mentioned—to the author’s dismay and fear that future generations would only remember him for his first novel, Buddenbrooks (1901). His apprehensions were unfounded. For decades, The Magic Mountain has ranked among the greatest novels of the 20th century and has consistently been included in “Great Books” courses due to its intellectual stature, its allegorical depiction of European history in the years before World War I, and Mann’s interweaving of universal themes—the seductions of love and death, man’s frailty and inhumanity, and the ephemerality of life—with his presentation of a civilization in crisis. [The book is ranked no. 9 on Daniel S. Burt's The Novel 100, a list of the 100 greatest novels of all time, and is also ranked high on numerous other lists of literary high spots.] . . . The Magic Mountain centers around the engineer Hans Castorp from a Hanseatic city who, at the age of twenty-three, visits his cousin Joachim Ziemssen at the sanatorium Berghof near Davos, Switzerland, in 1907. Subsequently diagnosed with tuberculosis, Castorp stays on the mountain for seven years. As in Mann’s previous works Buddenbrooks and Death in Venice, the motif of departure from a respectable bourgeois existence to a world of disease and death, resulting in the dissolution of the previous life and its responsibilities, plays a pivotal role. Castorp succumbs to a morbid interest in death, and abandons his career to embrace a life of lethargy." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.
