        The Demigods

London: Jarrolds,, 1939. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt, map endpapers. With the dust jacket. A little spotting to edges of text block. An excellent copy in the lightly rubbed jacket with a chip from the head of the faded spine panel and a couple of short closed tears. First edition, first impression, the first state binding of black cloth with gilt lettering. With a flyer form the publisher and a handwritten note from the author's wife loosely inserted. Author Alfred Gordon Bennett (1901–) was a documentary filmmaker and the founder of Pharos Books. This novel depicts a world menaced by giant ants who derive their abilities from a central controlling brain. "Out of the silence of Africa comes the first whisper of the greatest Terror mankind has ever known: a race of gigantic insects, ruled by an intelligence so vast as to be beyond human comprehension, plans to wipe out civilisation, as we know it, from the face of the Earth and extend its sinister dominion to the stars" (jacket blurb).

        Step by Step

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1939. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. This is a seminal Churchill book that includes 82 newspaper articles focused on foreign affairs written by Churchill between March 1936 and May 1939, many of them containing his warnings and predictions about Nazi Germany. As a measure of Churchill's prescience and ultimate vindication, upon publication, Labour leader Clement Attlee, a political opponent who would replace Churchill as Prime Minister in 1945, wrote to Churchill: "It must be a melancholy satisfaction to you to see how right you were." Others were even more blunt. Sir Desmond Morton, military officer, government official, and appeasement opponent, wrote to Churchill: "Many years on, historians will read this and your speeches in Arms and the Covenant. They will wonder but I doubt they will decide what devil of pride, unbelief, selfishness or sheer madness possessed the English people that they did not rise as one man" and "call on you to lead them." Less than a year after publication, in May 1940, Churchill would become Prime Minister. Here is the British first edition, first printing, an unusually bright and clean collector-worthy copy, fine in a very good+ dust jacket. The green cloth binding is beautifully clean, square, and unfaded with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The contents are bright and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. Even the page edges remain bright and clean. The dust jacket is unclipped, still bearing the original front flap price, and is highly complete, with the only loss being minor chipping at the bottom of the spine. The dust jackets of this edition proved prone to soiling and to toning of the spines. Here, the dust jacket spine remains unusually bright and the jacket remains very clean, with trivial soiling mostly confined to the hinges and flap folds. There are closed tears at the bottom hinges to a maximum depth of about one inch. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.         Tropic of Cancer

Paris: The Obelisk Press. (1939). Fifth printing. Printed self-wrappers. Pages browned, a modest tear on the front wrap and first leaf, a nice and pleasing, very good copy with no restoration. Miller's best known work, an acknowledged classic detailing with then-unprecedented sexual candor his expatriate experience in Paris. It was banned for decades in the United States. The first edition consisted of 1000 copies, the next four printings were 500 copies each, so this is one of the first 3000 copies. Because of the fragile binding, early editions are usually found in poor condition. Very scarce. .
