The Outsider and Others ---in Original Dustjacket ( Contains: Supernatural Horror in Literature; Call of Cthulhu; The Shunned House; Cats of Ulthar; Dagon; At the Mountains of Madness; Pickman's Model; Shadow Over Innsmouth; Dunwich Horror, etc)

Sauk City: Arkham House, 1939, 1st edition, 1st Printing ----------hard cover, a great copy, black cloth, wee bit of rubbing to lower edge of boards and corners, corners are not bumped, a 1/8" nick to the cloth at the center of the upper spine tip (really quite small), some offset to verso of the boards, book is completely square and tight and does not have any finger marks or rubbing to the cloth on the boards and spine, top edge of text block is dusty, overall a close to Near Fine copy but I'll call this Very Good+ because of that tiny nick to the cloth, this copy has TWO DUSTJACKETS, this copy has the original dustjacket which is Good only and has been price clipped, the dustjacket has numerous chips and tears with some loss along the extremities, the upper corner of the front panel of the dustjacket has had a 2" square loss affecting the "E" & "R" in Outsider, I have lasered that portion from another jacket and laid it in place with some archival tape so visually this looks much more appealing, the verso of the dustjacket has had a brown paper backing attached most of which I was able to remove, however there are still portions that remain glued to the verso of the jacket, the brown paper backing does not have any show through to the front of the dustjacket, a bit of cello tape at upper spine tip is barely noticeable, please ask for additional scans of any portion of the book or dustjacket that you wish to see, -----as well this copy has a FINE facsimile copy of the DUSTJACKET which makes this book look absolutely brilliant on the shelf, ------in spite of the availability of many 1st editions online (making many authors like Hemingway and Steinbeck seem almost commonplace) the first two Arkham House volumes of Lovecraft writings ( The Outsider and Beyond the Wall of Sleep ) remain elusve, ----------this collection contains: Howard Phillips Lovecraft: OUTSIDER by August derleth and Donald Wandrei; and the following stories: Dagon; Polaris; Celephais; Hypnos; The Cats of Ulthar; The Strange High House in the Mist; The Statement of Randolph carter; The Silver Key; Through the Gates of the Silver Key; The Outsider; The Music of Erich Zann; The rats in the Walls; Cool Air; He; The Horror at red Hook; The Temple; Arthur Jermyn; The Picture in the House; The festival; The Terrible Old man; The Tomb; The Shunned House; In The Vault; Pickman's Model; The haunter of the dark; The Dreams in the Witch-House; The Thing on the Doorstep; The Nameless City; The Lurking Fear; The Call of Cthulhu; The Colour Out of Space; The Dunwich Horror; At the Mountains of Madness; The Shadow Out of Time; The Shadow over Innsmouth; The Whisperer in darkness, and the essay Supernatural Horror in Literature, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good+/Good price Clipped. Illus. by Virgil Finlay Cover Art.

London, New York: Faber & Faber Ltd. and The Viking Press, 1939. , 1939 James Joyce. FINNEGANS WAKE. Signed Limited Edition. London; Faber & Faber; New York, 1939. 4to., 260 x 171 mm [10 1/4 x 6 3/4"]. 4 p.l., [first blank], 628 pp. Original gilt titled brick red buckram, edges untrimmed. In the original [mildly soiled] yellow cloth slipcase which is in solid very good or better condition. Curiously with a possible original clear plastic dustwrapper not mentioned in the bibliography but for all intents and purposes, this wrapper has always been on the book. An extremely attractive example, spotless text block, neatly signed by Joyce on the limitation's page, number 216 of 425 copies only. - Slocum and Cahoon A49. Having exhausted all the possibilities of English in "Ulysses," he had only one recourse for his next project, which was to create an entirely new language as a pastiche of all the existing ones; the result is "Finnegans Wake." The language in "Finnegans Wake" is a continuum of puns, portmanteaus, disfigured words, anagrams, and rare scraps of straightforward prose. What Joyce does is exploit the way words look and sound in order to associate them with remote, unrelated ideas. For example, his phrase "Olives, beets, kimmells, dollies" may sound familiar to those who happen to know that the first four letters of the Hebrew alphabet are aleph, bet, gimel, daled. "Psing a psalm of psexpeans, apocryphul of rhyme" recalls a nursery rhyme that may reside quietly in your most dormant memory cells, while "Where it is nobler in the main to supper than the boys and errors of outrager's virtue" sounds like a drunk auditioning for the role of Hamlet. Imaginary adjectives that pertain to letters of the English alphabet are employed to describe Dublin as a city "with a deltic origin and a nuinous end." "Finnegans Wake" is the ultimate in esoterica, and what you get out of it depends largely on your store of knowledge, so that upon completion, with a mutual wink at Joyce, you congratulate yourself for being so clever. In 1994, in The Western Canon, Harold Bloom wrote of Finnegans Wake: "[if] aesthetic merit were ever again to center the canon [it] would be as close as our chaos could come to the heights of Shakespeare and Dante," . Signed by Author. First Edition.

New Directions New York: New Directions, (1939). First Edition. Hardcover. Backstrip darkened, a few nicks in the cloth. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper. Patchen's second book, consisting of 800 copies, this copy INSCRIBED "with respect and admiration" for W. H. Auden on 10 May 1940 and SIGNED by Patchen. Patchen's first book brought him much acclaim including comparisons to Auden, unlikely as that might seem now. Among Patchen's accomplishments was the initiation of the poetry-and-jazz movement in the late 1950s. Although Auden never seems to have figured in an important way in Patchen's life, the elder poet did take part in a benefit for Patchen two decades after being presented with this book. A truly important presentation copy.

The Legend of Rip Van Winkle

n.p. 1939 n.p., 1939. Original watercolor on paper, signed/dated "Everett Shinn 1939" lower left. Image size 20 x 28 inches, matted and gilt framed to 26 1/2 x 35 1/4 inches overall. Fine . A bevy of little mountain men disport themselves around a sleeping Rip; an illustration for the 1939 New York edition of Washington Irving's classic story "Rip Van Winkle". Everett Shinn (1876-1953) had a long and distinguished career as a member of "The Eight"--the group of artists who broke away from the mid-Victorian taste of the times and ushed art into the new freedoms of the twentieth century. Shinn, who first became noteworthy by his ability to make on-the-spot newspaper illustrations of great technical brilliance, went on to become a renowned painter and illustrator, as well as an accomplished actor and playwright. This lively, decorative watercolor presents Shinn at the height of his illustrative powers, capturing the sparkling spirit of Irving's most famous work

Original Photograph of Helen Keller with her Akita pure bred, "Go-Go," Inscribed

[NP. ND, but ca. 1939]. Photograph (black and white) of Miss Keller with her beloved dog, "Go-Go" an Akita pure bred, inscribed in pencil across the bottom third of photograph, "To Mr. John E. Monahan / in appreciation of his help / fullness. / Cordially / Helen Keller." Size of photograph: 8 inches x 10 inches; matted and framed to overall size of 13 inches x 14 inches; photograph a bit rumpled at corners with some spotting. Still a lovely image of Miss Keller at age 59 seated on large chair with "Go-Go" seated at her feet, one of her hands on his collar and the other across his back. She is smiling and beautifully dressed in suit with fur shawl and hat with large cameo pin at her throat. "Go-go" is almost smiling as well - turned to face the camera with his gentle eyes seeing what his owner cannot. Helen Keller (1880-1968), noted American lecturer and author, blind and deaf from the age of two, was an international celebrity in a day and time before television and international movie distribution. She is important in the history of the Akita breed as she introduced the first Akita to the United States. In 1937, while on a speaking tour of Japan, she visited the Akita Prefecture (the home of the Akita on the northern most area of the island of Honshu) and commented on how much she admired the breed, designated a national monument in Japan, and that she would like to have such a dog for herself. As a measure of the respect in which she was held, Mr. Ichiro Ogasawara, a policeman in the area, presented her with a puppy called Kamikaze-Go. Miss Keller returned with him to the US, but he died of distemper at the age of eight months. Despite growing political tension between the US and Japan, Miss Keller's request for another Akita eventually brought her Kenzan-Go in July 1939 - an official gift of the Japanese government. "Go-Go" was an older brother of her original dog. He remained her friend until his death at 9 or 10 years of age. Through Kamikaze-go and his brother Kenzan-go, Miss Keller is credited with having introduced the Akita to America. Although most blood lines of today's Akitas are traced back to those animals brought to the US by returning soldiers after 1945, the effect of the well-known Miss Keller having an Akita as her companion was great. This is the only image of the brother of the first American Akita, and the first Akita to live a full life in the US, that we've seen. Keller's many accomplishments are well- known. She spent her entire life working for the betterment of others' lives, especially the disabled. She supported the equal rights for women, the woman's peace movement, abolition of child labor, Margaret Sanger's birth control movement, and - to the horror of her Alabama relatives - the NAACP! 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN, pp. 65-68. NAW THE MODERN PERIOD, pp. 389-393. See web sites for Akita dogs for further information. See an Image.

        The Day of the Locust

Random House New York: Random House. (1939). First. First edition. Slightly cocked and the paper spine label is a trifle darkened from binder's glue, both flaws which seem endemic to the book, else near fine in a bright, very good dustwrapper with small chips at the top of the front panel, and at the crown, but which has been spared the professional restoration that most copies we have seen lately seem to have undergone. The timeless and quintessential Hollywood novel in which West explores the frustration, violence, and savagery beneath the glamour and glitz. Increasingly scarce. Interesting Hollywood provenance, available on request. .

The Yearling was the best-selling novel in America for the year 1938 and won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize. Rawlings's editor was Max Perkins, who also worked with F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and other literary luminaries. The tender story of a boy and a fawn, has since entered the elite pantheon of American Classics, being widely sold and studied even to this day. Newell Convers Wyeth (October 22, 1882 – October 19, 1945), known as N.C. Wyeth, was an American artist and illustrator. He was the pupil of artist Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators. During his lifetime, Wyeth created over 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books,25 of them (including the Yearling), for Scribner's Classics - the work for which he is best-known. Wyeth was a realist painter just as the camera and photography began to compete with his craft. Sometimes seen as melodramatic, his illustrations were designed to be understood quickly. Wyeth, who was both a painter and an illustrator, understood the difference, and said in 1908, "Painting and illustration cannot be mixed—one cannot merge from one into the other." Wikipedia . Well executed, professional minor repair to pictorial rear endsheets at gutter. Several very light, small blemishes to front cover. A lovely, very crisp and clean copy. Darkening to chemise. A mild split or two and some mild soiling to slipcase.

        Foundations of Logic and Mathematics.

Chicago, The University of Chicago Press, (1939). 8vo. In the original blue printed wrappers. A very nice and clean copy - near mint. VIII, 71 pp.. First printing of Carnap's seminal publication of his semantical period. Here Carnap presents a clear and detailed account of the application of logic and mathematics in empirical science and the central importance of the analytic/synthetic distinction herein.Carnap thought that the logic of science could be fruitfully applied to the problems of quantum theory as well. In particular, the final sections of Foundations of Logic and Mathematics (1939, §§24, 25) suggest that the vexed question of the "interpretation" of the wave-function can be resolved by appreciating that theories of modern mathematical physics operate with "abstract" terms which are implicitly defined, in the manner of Hilbert, in an axiomatic system (and thus require no "intuitive" or "visualizable" meaning) but which still relate to empirical phenomena (experimental measurements) indirectly. (Cambridge Companion to Carnap). These thoughts anticipate Carnap's later conception of the "partial interpretation" of theoretical terms.Rudolf Carnap (born 1891 in Ronsdorf, Germany, died 1970 in Santa Monica, California) was an immensely influential analytic philosopher, who has contributed decisively to the fields of logic, epistemology, semantics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of language. He was one of the leading figures of the Vienna Circle, and a prominent logical positivist. He studied philosophy, physics and mathematics at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg, and worked at the universities of Jena, Vienna and Prague until 1935, when he, due to the war, emigrated to the U.S., where he became an American citizen in 1941. In America he became professor of the University of Chicago
