Coming Up For Air.

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1939 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in blue. Contents a little marked and browned, spine rolled and rather faded, cloth a little rubbed. Very good. First edition, second impression. From the library of the Hungarian émigré and author Paul Tabori with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Tipped in at the front is a fine one-page typed letter signed from Orwell to Tabori written from Jura and dated 6.6.47. Orwell is concerned about the welfare of the Hungarian - Dr Kemny. He relates a series of difficulties he has had in send a care package and money to Kemny, "About two months ago, before leaving London, I tried to send another parcel to Dr. Kemny, but without success. Besides some old cloths it contained cocoa, coffee and so forth, and the parcel - although I had filled up three forms at the post office - it came appeared that even to send the cloths would mean a lot more form-filling, and it hardly seemed worth while as they were really rubbish". This letter written precisely at the time when Orwell was engaged with 1984 simply reeks of Winston and his tribulations. As someone once said 1984 is not set in 1948 but its texture could be from no other time. This marvellous letter which goes on to discuss the Communist putsch in Hungry and the attendant censorship there is a remarkable survival from Orwell's final years.

New York and London: Harper & Brothers, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. A tight, crisp copy in a close to Fine dustwrapper with gentle wear to the head of the spine which is very mildly sunned. Triple Crown Winner: Signed, Review Copy, and simply Lovely condition. Fine in a Fine dustwrapper. SIGNED and not inscribed by the author on the title page in New Haven in July 1940 and quite scarce thus as Wilder nearly always inscribed books rather than simply signing unless it were for a limited edition. This is also a scarce Review Copy with a folded 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of green paper with Harper's letterhead giving the publication date as 13 April 1939 and with a long paragraph describing the origin of the play and a few details about its production. Wilder based MERCHANT on a play by Johann Nestroy dating back to Vienna of 1842. Initially a flop, MERCHANT was revised by Wilder into the Broadway hit THE MATCHMAKER, which in turn was later transformed into the monster musical HELLO, DOLLY!, the title song helping to thrust Louis Armstrong from the isolated world of jazz into popular American culture. Though there is no physical indication of such, this is from the collection of coal baron La Fayette Butler, many of whose books were left untouched from the time of purchase until their sale in the summer of 1999.

Astounding Science-Fiction 1939 January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December: Life-Line / Black Destroyer / Trends / Gray Lensman / Ether Breather / Discord in Scarlet / Misfit

New York: Street & Smith Publications, Inc. 1st Editions 1939 - ----------12 pulp magazines, standard pulp size, all 12 issues for 1939. 1939 is perhaps Astounding's most important year. It started out routinely enough, gradually evolving, then the July issue lauched science fiction's "Golden Age", by publishing A.E. Van Vogt's first story, and by bringing Isaac Asimov, who had had one earlier story published elsewhere, into Astounding's fold. Subsequent issues published the first stories of Robert A. Heinlein and Theodore Sturgeon. Earlier published writers such as Lester del Rey, L. Sprague de Camp, Jack Williamson, Clifford D. Simak and E.E. Smith cemented their places in the Astounding stable during the year. Information on front cover artist, notable (but not all) stories, and condition follows for each issue. JANUARY: Cover by John Frew, his only cover for ASF. The Incorrigible, a Johnny Black tale by de Camp. Cover creases, small tears, splits to spine extremities, edgewear, some soiling, a fair copy. / FEBRUARY: The first ASF cover by Hubert Rogers, who would become the most important cover artist for ASF during the Golden Age. Part 1 (of 3) of Cosmic Engineers by Simak. Small splits to spine extremities, covers glued to page block near spine (repairs a small front cover tear), edgewear, good-VG. / MARCH: Cover by Graves Gladney. Part 2 of the Simak serial, Cloak of Aesir by editor Campbell (as Don A. Stuart). Spine top and adjacent covers have clear tape, piece of brown paper tape on front cover for no apparent reason, cover creases, edgewear, good-VG. / APRIL: Cover by Charles Schneeman. Conclusion of the Simak serial, part 1 (of 3) of One Against the Legion by Williamson. 1 inch splits to spine extremities, reading crease, small tears to front cover fore-edge, edgewear, VG. / MAY: Cover by Graves Gladney. Part 2 of the Williamson serial, The Day is Done by del Rey. Cover creases and scuffs, covers glued to page block near spine (repairs a 2 inch split to spine top), edgewear, good-VG. / JUNE: Cover by Graves Gladney. Conclusion of the Williamson serial. Front cover glued to page block near spine, cover creases, chips and small splits to spine extremities, back cover tear repaired inside the cover by brown paper tape, good-VG. / JULY: The issue considered to be the launch of the Golden Age. Cover by Graves Gladney. BLACK DESTROYER, the FIRST STORY of A.E. VAN VOGT. TRENDS, the first story for ASF by ISAAC ASIMOV. The spine oddly mentions Ray Cummings and Lester del Rey, but they are not present. Small piece out of front cover at spine near top, splits to spine extremities, cover creases, small front cover tears, back cover dusty, good-VG. / AUGUST: Cover by Virgil Finlay, his sole effort for Astounding. Apparently, only a small part of Finlay's painting was used, much enlarged, the result being most unsatisfactory. LIFE-LINE, the FIRST story by ROBERT A. HEINLEIN. Covers glued to page block near spine, cover creases, chipping and small splits to spine extremities, edgewear, good-VG. / SEPTEMBER: Cover by Hubert Rogers. ETHER BREATHER, the FIRST story by THEODORE STURGEON. Front cover entirely glued to the first page for no apparent reason, about 25% of the spine and adjacent covers have clear tape, small pieces out of cover edges, back cover a little dusty, good. / OCTOBER: Famous cover by Hubert Rogers, showing the Grey/Gray (spelled both ways, take your choice) Lensman. Gray/Grey Lensman (part 1 of 4) by E.E. Smith, Space Rating by John Berryman. Small splits to spine extremities, front cover store stamp, corner crease, VG+. / NOVEMBER: Cover by Hubert Rogers. Part 2 of the Smith serial, Misfit by Heinlein. Chip to spine top, splits to spine extremities, small front cover scuff, cover creases, edgewear, VG. / DECEMBER: Cover by Gilmore. Part 3 of the Smith serial, plus Discord in Scarlet by A.E. Van Vogt, with two-color (red and black) illustrations. This story, along with the earlier Black Destroyer and later material, was the basis of the book The Voyage of the Space Beagle. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

(VAC e.V.) [Attributes: Hard Cover]
