Poet, pacifist, and journalist Max Barth (1896-1970) worked for the S¸ddeutschen Sonntagszeitung and was among those who called for a general strike to protest the Nazi putsch. He was convicted of high treason and fled to Switzerland. His memoir, Flucht in die Welt. Exilerinnerungen 1933-1950, describes his odyssey in exile (he eventually reached America, where he lived until 1952). Barth arrived in Norway in 1938. As this typescript volume attests, he was in Tromøy, Norway, on the outbreak of war, when he prepared this collection of seventy poems from the period 1919-1939. As he notes in his letter letter to his sister, the poems are not arranged in any particular order, and are a mix of published and unpublished work on a variety of themes. -" UNIQUE

        Mluvici pasmo

. This private print dating from 1939 is the combined work of Milada Souckova (1899-1983) and her husband Zdenek Rykr (1900-1940). This is the first edition of Milada Souckova's significant poetic collection, illustrated with colourful linocut illustrations by Zdenek Rykr. These linocut illustrations are among the last works of Zdenek Rykr (before his suicide due to fear of the Gestapo). Zdenek Rykr is an eminent solitary artist belonging to the Czech interwar avant-garde. He is famous not only for his free paintings but also for his work in the advertising industry (for the Orion chocolate company for example). The graphics to the book were created together with the poems and question the current problems of human society; in terms of time and topic they are close to Rykr's existential drawings of women in baths. The writer Milada Souckova was part of the cultural scene of Czech interwar avant-garde; she also co-worked with the Prague linguistic circle; after the war she emigrated to the USA. "The Speaking Zone" is one of the best pieces of Czech poetry of the 20th Century. This extensive work comments on the pathetic anxieties of the time, asks for the reasons for the big spiritual crisis in the age of reason and finds shelter in language; at the same time critically evaluates the poetic practices of avant-garde.A numbered copy (n. 32/100).A book autographed by the authors Zdenek Rykr and Milada Souckova (signed with coloured pencils on the title page). The book contains six big (15 x 30 cm) full page multicoloured linocuts + two-coloured linocut on the cover by Zdenek Rykr. The linocuts are three or four coloured, some of the matrices are repeated in more than one printings. The book has an original typographic layout. The table of contents looks like a belt stretching without any indentations from the upper to the down margin, the text - typed in sans serif typeface - is divided by rows of squares. The original cover is printed in two-coloured linocut. The book is "bound" with wire spiral.A private edition by M. Souckova and Z. Rykr, 1939, Prague. Soft cover, bound with wire spiral, 24 x 30 cm, 32 pages.A very nice condition, the cover is almost imperceptibly fingered, slightly yellowed pages, the interior is clean, the linocuts are in a perfect condition; look at the photo. * Our books are stored in our warehouse, not in the shop.         THE D. A. DRAWS A CIRCLE (First Edition, Warmly Inscribed)

New York: William Morrow, 1939. New York: William Morrow, 1939. Gardner, Erle Stanley. THE D. A. DRAWS A CIRCLE. New York: William Morrow, (1939). First Edition. A FINE copy in a NEAR FINE, bright and unfaded ORIGINAL (Priced $2.00) DUST JACKET (just lightly used). WARMLY INSCRIBED on the front-free endpaper:"To Tee/ who is so much a part of the gang -- with love from Erle." Underneath ESG has signed his name in full followed by Feb 1940 and underneath that "New Orleans." Tee Rose, a young writer from San Francisco, was a lifelong friend of ESG and she was always presented with Gardner's latest book -- usually immediately upon publication. We have in stock quite a few of his presentation copies to her dating from 1934 to the early 1960s. THE D. A. DRAWS A CIRCLE is the third of nine novels written by Gardner about small town California district attorney Doug Selby and fictional Madison City. Particularly nice cover art. As a sidebar, this is the only one of the many Tee Rose inscribed books we have in stock which has "New Orleans" as the location in which the book was signed. Logic seems to suggest he was there to research his 1942 novel OWLS DON'T BLINK which was set in the New Orleans French Quarter.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine.

New York, 1939-1943.. Zus. ca. 400 S. In Klarsichthüllen in 5 Ordnern..

        Step by Step. 1936-1939

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1939.. London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1939., 1939. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED TO JULIET DUFF, three weeks prior to the outbreak of War. Octavo, pp.365; [1], Epilogue; with two maps, one of which is folding. Bound in publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine, blind decoration to covers. Intenally fine, covers show some wear, particularly at joints, spine ends chipped. With presentation note to flyleaf; To / Juliet / from / Winston S. Churchill / [flourish] / August. 13. 1939 / Blenheim . 1704. The recipient was the socialite Lady Juliet Duff, daughter of the 4th Earl of Lonsdale and a long-term friend and correspondent of Churchill. Churchill's foreign affairs articles from 1936 to 1939 are compiled in this important work, which chronicles Britain's loss of air parity, France's decline, and the renascent Germany of Adolf Hitler. The author's manuscript note refers to the anniversary of the Battle of Blenheim, in which Churchill's ancestor the Duke of Marlborough was a victorious allied commander. Blenheim Palace, which began construction in 1705, was intended as a gift to Marlborough for his part in the military triumph from a grateful nation. Blenheim Palace subsequently became the residence of the Duke and his descendants, to the present day Spencer-Churchill family; this magnificent Oxfordshire property is the only non-Royal palace in England, and was the birthplace and home of Sir Winston Churchill.
