1939. Fine. HIRANO Chie. KIYONAGA. A study of his life and works. With a portfolio of plates in color and collotype. Boston: Museum of Fine Arts, 1939. 4to., grey cloth; viii + 545pp. Slight soiling, else near fine. This copy has the portfolio of plates printed in Japan in 1945. It has all the collotype plates of the American edition and 6 (compared to 8 in the original editon) color woodcut facsimiles, printed by Watanabe, are called for and included in this edition. With a xerox of the English language table of contents from the original edition. There are a few pages of preliminary descriptive captions in Japanese - captions which did not appear in the American edition. All the numbering (translated into Arabic numbers in pencil) of the reference plates match the numbering of the text volume, hence this copy is as fully useful as reference as the original edition. A remarkable work, the only catalogue raisonne of a Japanese artist done in English, and still the best work done on Kiyonaga in any language. The text volume is near fine and the portfolio of plates is good with splitting to the hinges. Very useful!

The War Papers, Volume 1, At the Admiralty, September 1939 - May 1940

This is the first volume of The War Papers, which are the companion document volumes accompanying Volume VI of Churchill's Official Biography. This volume contains documents from the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 to May 1940, the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the low countries. There were both British and U.S. editions, both now out of print. This British first edition is considerably more scarce and highly sought than the U.S. first edition, which is similar in appearance. These Heinemann War Papers volumes - particularly Volumes 1 & 2 - seem destined to rise inexorably in price just like the now exorbitantly expensive Volume V Companions that precede them. Here is a very good copy of the British first edition, only printing, in a near-fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is tight, clean, and square with bright spine gilt. The binding is marred only by a bit of rounding to the spine corners and a bump at the upper rear corner. The contents are clean and bright. No spotting. No previous ownership marks of any kind. The page edges show only the slightest soiling and a barely noticeable scattering of spots at the top edge. The red dust jacket has proven quite susceptible to spine fade. Here the dust jacket is clean, bright, and complete. Absolutely no fading to the spine. No losses or tears. What prevents this dust jacket from being fine is only modest wrinkling at the spine head and the upper rear corner. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.       In the weeks before the start of World War 11, Laurencin comments to friends about her travel. "The weather is nice - the window open onto greenery - Nothing to tell - All the Jews are going to is not only the danger which makes them pious - since they govern - the leaves of the trees, disturbed about it, make splinters of light...." She signs, "Marie." She draws decorative curls around her signature.

        On infinite direct products

Compositio Mathematica [Cambridge]: Compositio Mathematica. 1939. First. Von Neumann's contribution removed from the journal and bound in gray cloth, titled on the front board in gilt. An article discussing infinite tensor products of Hilbert spaces and the algebras acting on them. Arthur S. Wightman's copy with his ownership signature ("A.S. Wightman") and his notations to the formulae on four pages. Wightman was one of the founders of the axiomatic approach to quantum field theory, and originated the set of Wightman axioms.         Lettre autographe signée de Colette [ envoyée à l'écrivain et érudit bordelais Armand Got. ]

        Rosamund's Castle

London: Girls Own Paper Office.. First Edition (First Impression). Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. N.d. [1939] A very difficult title and scarce in this condition. Book is clean and tight with bumping to spine ends, gilt lettering on spine is darkened/lost but lettering is still clear and lettering on front cover has slight loss to gilt at places as well. A light vertical crease down the spine. Scattered foxing to edge of text block but not visible on pages when opened but there is a small, unrelated, amount of very light foxing (barely noticeable) on half title and title. Internally the only other "defect" is a prize label, from the publishers, on the front end paper. There is also a slip laid in from them congratulating the recipient on winning the prize. The jacket is complete with very slight wear to extremities in places, mainly spine ends and corners, but it is a clean and bright jacket that is a lovely survivor. Price present and no inscriptions in the book. Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel.

Pynson Printers New York: Pynson Printers, 1939. No. 87 OF 370 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND BY PUBLISHER ELMER ADLER. Hardcover. 292 x 229 mm (11 1/2 x 9"). 129 pp., [2] leaves. No. 87 OF 370 COPIES SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AND BY PUBLISHER ELMER ADLER. Original black quarter calf over Indian cloth in a floral design, flat spine with gilt titling. In the publisher's (slightly worn) lettered brown cardboard slipcase. With 85 photogravure illustrations of papermaking in India and 27 specimens of Indian paper. Schlosser 39. Short indentation to spine, light thumbing to a couple of leaves, otherwise a fine copy, clean and bright in an unworn binding. In this work, Hunter takes us on a journey through various Indian provinces, examining the techniques used to make paper by hand in each one and providing a valuable record of a vanishing industry. The account of his travels through the country is illustrated with photographs of papermaking equipment and of artisans at work making paper; it describes in detail the materials used and the techniques employed to make paper in each region, and enumerates the special challenges Indian papermakers face in finding quality raw materials and dealing with the discouragement of British colonial officials. Hunter holds out little hope for the future of the craft in India, where artisans are focused on trying to produce paper at lower prices than the machine-made kind--a hopeless task--rather than on making the kind of high-quality paper that cannot be produced on a machine. This work is all the more significant for capturing a dying art and preserving remnants of its products.
