James Hansen Hjul (1882 - 1957), a structural engineer, constructed many buildings in San Francisco. He was the founder of the J.H. Construction Company and was listed as a contractor, civil engineer, structural engineer and construction engineer in San Francisco City Directories from 1907 to 1958. Most of his work occurred in the South of Market area on warehouses and industrial buildings.

      Austrian-born associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1939-62); helped found American Civil Liberties Union. Partly-printed DS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Cambridge, MA, 1919 September 29. Very good. Slight smearing of signature. Small chips at two corners, not affecting text. Updating form sent out by "Who's Who in America" for its 1920-21 edition, on light orange paper, with Frankfurter's 3" X 1½" biographical entry from the previous edition affixed onto the blank center area. Frankfurter has written in two small additions ("assistant to the Secretary of Labor" and "appt'd. chmn. War Labor Policies Bd., June, 1918"), signing and dating it at the bottom. Several editor's marks and corrections in purple ink. Comes with a fine -- and itself scarce -- 1947 news agency photograph (International News Photo) of a seated Frankfurter (feet not touching the floor!), along with Bernard Baruch and others, receiving an honorary degree from City College of New York. Original mimeographed caption sheet present.

Two volumes in printed wrappers, housed in the original chemises and slipcases. With 125 woodcuts, 4 of which are repeated on the wrappers. Light darkening to spine panels of the chemises. A very fine set. The wood-blocks were carved by Maillol and finished in 1939, but the printing of them was delayed by the war and not realized until 1958. From the library of Swedish librarian and book historian Sten G. Lindberg, who acquired the book from antiquarian bookdealer Willy Heimann in 1958, according to his note lightly written with pencil at bottom of the first printed leaf. This is no. 344 of 350 numbered copies, numbered and initialed by Gonin. 50 additional copies were printed and numbered I-L; with these, and the copies numbered 1-150, came an extra suite of prints in colour

First edition, first impression, the first state binding of black cloth with gilt lettering. With a flyer form the publisher and a handwritten note from the author's wife loosely inserted. Author Alfred Gordon Bennett (1901–) was a documentary filmmaker and the founder of Pharos Books. This novel depicts a world menaced by giant ants who derive their abilities from a central controlling brain. "Out of the silence of Africa comes the first whisper of the greatest Terror mankind has ever known: a race of gigantic insects, ruled by an intelligence so vast as to be beyond human comprehension, plans to wipe out civilisation, as we know it, from the face of the Earth and extend its sinister dominion to the stars" (jacket blurb).

      Mason and Company. Chicago. 1939. - Three gambling sales publications: a K.C. Card Company products catalogue in paper wraps (9 x 6 inches, 80 pp) and two folded brochures advertising gaming products from Mason & Co.; one of the brochures is staple-bound (11 x 8.5 inches unfolded, 20 pp including covers) while the other unfolds to a two-sided poster-size sheet (18 x 24 inches) promoting Mason & Co. products and featuring 33 illustrations of dice layouts. The K.C. Card Co. sales catalogue features dice, cards, counter games and supplies, poker checks, dice boxes and other equipment. The stapled Mason & Co. brochure features dice and dice accessories; tables for black jack, roulette, and dice; pari mutuel, horse race and dice wheels; keno supplies; faro equipment; and much more. The items come with an order blank inside a postage-paid enveloped addressed to Mason & Co. Also in the envelope is a Mason & Co. business card with, on verso, "Confidential Special Dice Price List." These items come with the original postmarked mailing envelope dated "October 24 '39." An amazing collection of gambling equipment sales publications in excellent condition, virtually "as new." As a footnote, New Yorker magazine, in referring to "The Americanization of Lady Luck," an article that appeared in the magazine's June 22, 1935, issue, identifies Mason & Co., as "the largest manufacturers of marked cards, phony dice, controlled roulette wheels, etc. in the country."
