        CAPTAIN SLAUGHTERBOARD DROPS ANCHOR

Country Life , 1939. Country Life , 1939. First edition. 4to. Original cloth backed paper covered boards, illustrated in colour by Peake. In the original pictorial dustwrapper with illustrations mirroring those of the boards. With a large detailed pencil drawing by Peake of Slaughterboard on the front end paper, and inscribed by Peake's father (Doc) to Peake's mother (Elizabeth). Further signed by Peake and dated 1940. A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper which has chips from head and tail of the spine, internally reinforced, and a couple of short closed tears. A generally well preserved copy of a very uncommon book. Dustwrapper and boards illustrated in colour by Peake, with line drawings throughout. Peake's first book was published in October 1939. On 3 October, Peake, having heard that his mother had had a stroke, went to his parent's Sussex house, from where he wrote to his friend Gordon Smith, "I am writing to tell you about Mother, who I am afraid has not long to live now, Maeve [Peake's wife] came up from Stratford and she and I are now with Doc. down here..." (Gordon Smith - Mervyn Peake A Personal Memoir). Peake's mother died on the 8th of October. It is possible that Peake took down a copy of his just printed first book to show his parents, which was to become this poignant presentation copy from father and son. The literary press were not receptive to the book: "quite unsuitable for sensitive children" (Punch) and sales of the book were slow. The publisher's were advertising remaindered copies for 2/6 less than a year later, shortly after which all remaining copies were destroyed in a warehouse fire caused by the Luftwaffe's bombing of London. Now one of the most sought after modern illustrated books, the first edition is very rare, and this is the only significant association copy, or copy with a drawing that we have encountered.         Interior art [possibly for Weird Tales].

[New York]: Hannes Bok. 1939 - Black and white drawing by the famed science fiction and fantasy illustrator Hannes Bok. Bok's color cover art and black and white interior drawings appeared in many science fiction and fantasy magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, among them Weird Tales, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Famous Fantastic Mysteries, and many others. This drawing appears to be a photostat used to produce printing plates. There is no indication of where it was published, but it may be from Weird Tales; the Hannes Bok Illustration Index indicates that his only publications for 1939 were in that magazine. Given some of the imagery, it could also be for the story "The Dreadful Rabbits" by Gans T. Field, which appeared in the July 1940 issue of Weird Tales. 14 x 10-5/8 inches. Fine.

- 1 Blatt (Variante) lose.

        Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

May, with 41 illustrations by Denver Gillen. Small quarto, original pictorial wrappers. In near fine condition with the lightest of shelfwear. An exceptional copy. The story is written as a poem in the meter of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas". It was reissued in 1948 with the song added.

        THE PERSONAL HERESY: A Controversy

OUP , 1939. OUP , 1939. First edition. Original green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Signed by the author on the front end paper (for K.P. Storer). A near fine copy. A series of six essays debating poetry and the importance of understanding the poet's state of mind in order to appreciate his work. Tillyard writes, "All poetry is about the poet's state of mind." To understand Paradise Lost correctly, he stated, one must read it as an "expression of Milton's personality." Whilst Lewis maintains that knowledge of the poet's personal life is unnecessary to the interpretation of his poetry. PROVENANCE: From the library of Kenneth Peter Storer (1924-2007) who came up to University College, Oxford to read English in 1942. C.S. Lewis, although then a fellow at Magdalen had been at University College as an undergraduate and retained strong links with the college. In particular he would take the English tutorials for University College students as they had no English fellow at the time. Storer was one such undergraduate, who developed a friendship with Lewis and dined with him on more then one occasion where Lewis gave him signed copies of his books. Lewis rarely signed his books and examples are rare.

        Forces in Molecules

American Physical Society, Lancaster and New York 1939 - FIRST EDITION of Feynman's undergraduate thesis at MIT, "a fundamental discovery" published in The Physical Review when he was just twenty-one. "Forces or energy-that was the choice for those seeking to apply the quantum understanding of the atom to the workings of real materials. At stake was not mere terminology but a root decision about how to conceive of a problem and how to proceed in calculating. "As Feynman conceived the structure of molecules, forces were the natural ingredients. He saw springlike bonds with varying stiffness, atoms attracting and repelling one another. The usual energy-accounting methods seemed secondhand and euphemistic. [He demonstrated that] the force on an atom's nucleus is no more or less than the electrical force from the surrounding field of charged electrons-the electrostatic force. Once the distribution of charge has been calculated quantum mechanically, then from that point forward quantum mechanics disappears from the picture. The problem becomes classical; the nuclei can be treated as static points of mass and charge. Feynman's approach applies to all chemical bonds" (Gleick). His discovery, now known as Feynman's theorem or the Feynman-Hellmann theorem, has endured as an efficient approach to the calculation of forces in molecules. Provenance: With ownership signature of D.W. Epstein on front cover; presumably the D.W. Epstein who, along with I.G. Mallof developed the electron gun in 1934. IN: The Physical Review, Vol 56, Second Series, Number 4, August 15, 1939. Lancaster, PA and New York, NY: American Physical Society, 1939. Quarto, original wrappers.         On the Products of the Fission of Uranium and Thorium Under Neutron Bombardment

Copenhagen: Ejnar Munksgaard,, 1939. Copenhagen: Ejnar Munksgaard,, 1939. [Offprint from:] Det Kgl. Danske Videnskabernes Selskab. Mathematisk-fysiske Meddelelser. Volume 17, No. 5. 14 page pamphlet, staple bound. Original orange wrappers printed in black. A fine copy, contents partially unopened. Uncommon offprint of the paper that revealed the discovery of nuclear fission. When the neutron was discovered in the early 1930s a scientific race began to create elements heavier than uranium, which has a nucleus composed of 92 protons. Lise Meitner, a researcher at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute and the University of Berlin, was studying this question when she was forced to flee Germany, leaving her collaborators Otto Hahn and Fritz Straussman to continue their planned series of experiments. The puzzling data that they obtained from bombarding uranium with neutrons was transmitted to Meitner, who, together with her nephew Otto Frisch, confirmed the results and "found the true explanation of these phenomena. The interpolation of a neutron into the nucleus of a uranium atom caused it to divide into two parts and to release energy amounting to about 200,000,000 electron volts. This process bore such a close similarity to the division of living cells that Frisch suggested the use of the term 'fission' to describe it" (PMM 422). Meitner also realised that Einstein's equation E = mc2 explained the massive release of energy as the conversion of matter to energy, and anticipated the development of massive chain reactions. Meitner was unable to publish jointly with Hahn and Straussman, whose paper appeared in Naturwissenschaften in December 1938, and instead she and Frisch published their groundbreaking analysis of the data in Nature and in the proceedings of the Danish Academy of Sciences the following year. A superb copy of this uncommon offprint.

Insgesamt gut erhalten. - DSB 6, 14; PMM 422 First edition of this epoch-making work. - Contemporary half-cloth, slightly bumped.         The Scientific Aspect of Surrealism

London: The London Gallery Ltd,, 1939. London: The London Gallery Ltd,, 1939. Reprinted from The London Bulletin, No. 7 December 1938–January 1939. 4 page pamphlet. Original olive wrappers printed in black. 5 illustrations in the text by the author's partner Reuben Mendikoff. Wrappers rubbed, creased, marked, and tanned along the edges. Contents toned with small chipped and stained area at the top edge of each leaf. A very good copy. Rare offprint from The London Bulletin by the painter Grace Phailthorpe (1883–1971), describing her belief in the ability of Surrealism to psychoanalytically liberate humankind. During the 1930s Phailthorpe and her companion and experimental subject Reuben Mendikoff, "were hailed as 'the best and most truly Surrealist' of any artists living in Britain by André Breton, leader of the movement. Herbert Read, the art critic, ranked them alongside William Blake and Lewis Carroll in the canon of British 'super-realists'. Desmond Morris, the anthropologist who was also once in the British Surrealist group, said they created some of the most 'serious and important works' of the day" (Milner, Sunday Telegraph, January 1998). Phailthorpe had trained as a surgeon, but became interested in psychoanalysis, particularly the expression of the subconscious in art and its use in therapy. When she and Mendikoff met in 1935 at a party hosted by Alesiter Crowley's lover Victor Neuberg they hit it off immediately. Phailthorpe, twenty-three years Mendikoff's senior, realised that the younger man would be an excellent subject for her investigation of Surrealism, and they moved together to Cornwall where, for the next five years, she and Mendikoff painted and analysed each other's work. Though they were initially praised by the other Surrealists, their approach began to chaff. It was "the kind of 'scientific' dissection of art that enraged other members of the Surrealist group. They felt Pailthorpe and Mednikoff were too dry and literal, and tried to explain away the inexplicable in Surrealist art with scientific platitudes. 'They reduced paintings to the level of symptoms', says Conroy Maddox, 'and psychology to the level of a simple equation'" (Milner). The pair was expelled from the British Surrealist Group in 1940 and moved to New York, returning to Britain eight years later where Phailthorpe became a consultant for the Portman Clinic, established to treat troubled young people with therapy rather than punishment. She also founded the world's first art therapy school in Dorking. When both died in 1971 their paintings and writings were dispersed and most remain lost. Offprints of Phailthorpe's academic writings are also rare. COPAC lists only two copies of the present volume (Leeds and Tate Britain), and no other records appear in OCLC or at auction. A rare survival from a significant but nearly forgotten moment in the history of art.
