Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel - First Edition in Original Dust Jacket

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1939. First Edition, First Printing, with 1939 listed on the title page, and no subsequent printings mentioned on the copyright page. Though price-clipped, the dust jacket is identifiable as a first issue jacket, bearing an ad for Choo-Choo on the rear flap, and a yellow spine that just has the book title followed by an abbreviation for the publisher, "H.M. CO", with no mention of the author's name. In Very Good condition. Clean text. Pages show light signs of handle, and are lightly age toned, with light rubbing to a few. Front paste down has a small blue smudge. The binding is holding but lightly pulled with light splitting starting at the front. The boards show light wear, with light rubbing to the stamping. The dust jacket shows edge wear, with rubbing and short tears starting at the folds. The spine of the dust jacket has been reinforced from the verso. A Caldecott Medal winner, wonderfully rare in the original dust jacket.

      - BURTON,VIRGINIA LEE. MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL. Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1939 (1939). Oblong 4to (9 1/2 x 8 1/2"), pictorial cloth, a few tiny margin mends and hinge wear else near fine in an amazingly bright price clipped dust wrapper with only a few tiny closed edge tears and 1/4" chip off top of spine. First edition, first printing of this classic, illustrated with rich colors by the author to accompany the wonderful story of an Irish steam shovel operator and his beloved steam shovel Mary Anne. Burton, along with Sendak and McCloskey is among the handful of author/illustrators of picture books whose talents were equally accomplished in both aspects of creating a successful children's book. Bader (p.199-201) says that "Burton knew exactly what she wanted in a picture book, hers or another's, and she wanted a good deal - information and significant detail as well as the accostomed clarity, humor and imagination. The wonder is that she achieved what she wanted without losing the spontaneity." The result is that her books were read to tatters so very few collectible 1st editions of this title exist. This is a nice copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Coming Up For Air.

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1939 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in blue. Contents a little marked and browned, spine rolled and rather faded, cloth a little rubbed. Very good. First edition, second impression. From the library of the Hungarian émigré and author Paul Tabori with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Tipped in at the front is a fine one-page typed letter signed from Orwell to Tabori written from Jura and dated 6.6.47. Orwell is concerned about the welfare of the Hungarian - Dr Kemny. He relates a series of difficulties he has had in send a care package and money to Kemny, "About two months ago, before leaving London, I tried to send another parcel to Dr. Kemny, but without success. Besides some old cloths it contained cocoa, coffee and so forth, and the parcel - although I had filled up three forms at the post office - it came appeared that even to send the cloths would mean a lot more form-filling, and it hardly seemed worth while as they were really rubbish". This letter written precisely at the time when Orwell was engaged with 1984 simply reeks of Winston and his tribulations. As someone once said 1984 is not set in 1948 but its texture could be from no other time. This marvellous letter which goes on to discuss the Communist putsch in Hungry and the attendant censorship there is a remarkable survival from Orwell's final years.
