Finnegans Wake.

London, Faber and Faber Limited, (1939). Orig. red cloth in very fine condition. Orig. red and yellow dust-jacket with a few tears to extremities. Small piece (ab. 1 cm) lacking at top of front wrapper and about the same at top of back wrapper. Minor loss of paper to top capital, far from affecting lettering. A nice, not price-clipped copy. First (blank) leaf and last two leaves browned (due to a loosely laid in leaf of a newspaper), otherwise internally near mint. Uncut.. First edition. This masterpiece by one of the greatest modern writers is probably the most celebrated as well as least read of Joyce's works. He spent 16 years writing it, and rarely, if not never, has a work of English literature been so debated and written about before its appearance as this one. "The book which would be the most important event of any season in which it appeared." (Front flap)

        The Grapes of Wrath

New York: The Viking Press, 1939. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing (slightly askew, some darkening to the front gutter, small bit of shelf soil to the leading edge, and a small push to the bottom, of the closed page block's bottom, some surface scratching to the top of the closed page block) in a Very Good spine-toned first issue dust jacket priced at $2.75 and "First Edition" printed on the front flap's bottom corner (some wear to the spine ends and board corners, light chipping to the spine head with some loss at the top of the "T" and one bar of the "H" in "THE"). John Steinbeck won the Pulitzer Prize for "The Grapes of Wrath" and won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception". In awarding the Prize to Steinbeck, Anders Österling, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, described "The Grapes of Wrath" as "...the great work that is principally associated with Steinbeck's name, the epic chronicle The Grapes of Wrath (1939). This is the story of the emigration to California which was forced upon a group of people from Oklahoma through unemployment and abuse of power. This tragic episode in the social history of the United States inspired in Steinbeck a poignant description of the experiences of one particular farmer and his family during their endless, heartbreaking journey to a new home." A Very Good copy of John Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning magnum opus.

        SELF-PORTRAIT WITH ERSKINE CALDWELL

Bourke-White, Margaret. Original silver-chloride photograph, 6 1/2 x 5 inches, mounted to heavy card stock, 9 1/2 x 6 inches, with the following printed caption; "Circumstances have delayed us, but we hope this card reaches you very soon. Erskine Caldwell/ Margaret Bourke-White." There is slight creasing to the card stock, else a very good and tonally rich print. Margaret Bourke-White and Erskine Caldwell collaborated on several books. They were married in 1939 and divorced in 1942. They issued this card for Christmas, we believe, in 1941. It is pictured in THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE, edited by Sean Callahan on page 15, with the caption dating it as 1940. In the photograph, chalked to the side of the train car is 1941. Also, a copy of this card was sold at Swann Galleries in October of 1997; the catalog entry dates it as 1941 (Inscribed , $7,475).

Sir John Franklin's Last Arctic Expedition. The Franklin Expedition: A Chapter in the History of the Royal Navy

London: Metheun & Co. Ltd. 1939, 1st Edition. () xviii,222pp. Near fine. Octavo in original blue cloth with one illustration (map) and three folding maps (at end). Original dustwrapper. Minor wear to the wrapper otherwise an exceptional copy. Not in AB. This account of the Franklin expedition deals primarily with addressing the fortunes of the expedition. The author has included a brief account of the search for the lost expedition and has attempted to present an outline of the principal events which, while not associated with the search itself, have occurred in connection with the ill-fated enterprise. The narrative has been compiled from both published and non-published sources. Very scarce as many copies were destroyed during the second world war when Metheun's warehouse was bombed. This copy nicely inscribed from the author to his nephew Peter McClintock Cyriax!.

(Leal, Olavo D'Eça) Historia Extraordinària de Iratan e Iracêma, os Meninos mais Malcriados do Mundo

Lisbon: Livraria Portugalia, 1939. Quarto. 114, (ii)pp. First edition, signed by the author on the copyright page. With twelve full-page illustrations, numerous decorated initial capitals and a title-page vignette by Paulo Ferreira. Printed letterpress by the Jornal do Comércio. These thirty-eight stories were written as bedtime stories for Olavo D'Eça Leal's first-born son, Paulo, and were run as a series in a newspaper, in addition to being read by the author during half-hour national radio broadcasts for children. This is actually the second book for children written by Leal: his first, titled Provérbios, appeared in 1928, when the author was just 20. The present work was awarded the Prémio Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho, Portugal's highest honor for works of children's literature, and was adapted for film in 1987 by Paulo Guilherme. Leal would go on to become a war correspondent in Berlin during the Second World War and was a pioneer in Portuguese radio and television. In addition to being the worst-behaved children, constantly wandering off and being expelled from school, Iratan and his sister Iracêma are also described as being highly imaginative, and these stories eventually follow them to an attic, where they read about their travels to the Isle of Truth in a gigantic book. Bound in printed yapp-edged wrappers, which show wrinkling and several tears along all edges; some spotting to spine. A very good copy of a rare and important Portuguese juvenile.

The lettering around the border lists the many areas of study, from librarianship to law. The map was "sponsored by The California Club in commemoration of the Golden Gate International Exposition."

        Value And Capital

London: Oxford, 1939. First edition of the economist's ground breaking work. Octavo, original black cloth with gilt titles to the spine. An excellent copy in a very good dust jacket with some chips. Signed by the author. Housed in a custom quarter clamshell box. Rare, especially in the original dust jacket and signed. Upon publication, Value and Capital was hailed as a classic work. In it, J.R. Hicks introduced Walrasian general equilibrium theory to an English-speaking audience. This was the first publication to attempt a rigorous statement of stability conditions for general equilibrium. In doing so, Hicks formalised comparative statics. The book synthesises dynamic-adjustment elements from Walras and Wicksell and from Marshall and Keynes. It distinguishes temporary, intermediate, and long-run equilibrium with expectations as to future market conditions affecting behavior in current markets (Bliss, 1987, pp. 642–43). "In this book Professor Hicks has essayed two tasks of major importance; to reduce modern economic analysis to a manageable whole; and to construct a system of Economic Dynamics ... This is one of the few books which mark a stage in the advance of a science." (The Economist)
