        The Outsider and Others

Sauk City: Arkham House, 1939 Sauk City: Arkham House, 1939. First Edition; 1200 copies printed; a fine copy in a dust jacket with minor wear and tear and a quarter-inch of chipping along the foot of the spine. The back flap has been inscribed by the dust jacket designer, Virgil Finlay: ?This jacket is a photographic composite of early Weird Tales drawings, probably only one or two were for H.P.L. stories - I wish I might have found time for more of his work which I did admire. Virgil Finlay.? [With] Another copy. First Edition. Near fine. Inscribed at Christmas, 1939 by co-publisher Donald Wandrei. In the apparently unique green proof jacket (very minor wear and soiling); printed without text. Included with these copies are several remarkable and important letters and ephemeral pieces. In a 1937 letter, Howard Wandrei (brother of Donald) writes Virgil Finlay about his own fantasy drawings, announcing that he is to do the artwork for the collected edition of Lovecraft (what became The Outsider and Others). In a one page typed letter, signed, to Finlay, dated 5 October [1939], Derleth writes, ?Don tells me you are at work on a cover for The Ousider and Others. I am delighted to know it, and I am sure that you will pay adequate tribute to HPL in your work on the jacket of his first major book...Don and I stand to divide the loss of circa $1500...I am anxious to see the jacket design when it is finished...? In a one page, typed letter, signed, and dated Nov. 14, 1939, co-publisher Donald Wandrei writes Virgil Finlay regarding the above proof dust jacket and the decision to issue the final one in blue, â??...The green was a particularly detestable and odious color...â? He discusses at some length why black was eliminated as well. A carbon of a letter from the manufacturer to Derleth discusses these problems as well as some difficulties with the binding. In addition, there is a typed letter from Derleth to Mrs. Eddy about the book and her husbandâ??s Weird Tales contributions. There are two announcements from Derleth and Wandrei for the book; a duplicated one is clearly a preliminary effort and does not mention the future publisher, Arkham House, and begs for subscribers; a one page type-set announcement is a more professional presentation and refers to Arkham House.

- Beilagen: Ein Neujahrskarte. Klischeedruck nach Tuschzeichnung. Rückseitig mit eigenhändigem Gruß. - Gut erhalten. - Vgl. Löffer D 30.

Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals. Offprint of his PhD thesis - the copy of Robin Gandy

C.F. Hodgson & Son, London 1939 - First edition, the incredibly rare offprint issue, and the copy of Robin Gandy, of Turing?s PhD thesis, "one of the key documents in the history of mathematics and computer science" (Appel), and perhaps Turing?s most formidable paper. "Systems of logic based on ordinals is a profound work of first rank importance. Among its achievements are the exploration of a means of circumventing Gödel?s incompleteness theorems; the introduction of the concept of an ?oracle machine,? thereby opening the field of relative computability; and, in the wake of the demolition of the Hilbert programme (by Gödel, Turing and Church), an analysis of the place of intuition in mathematics and logic" (Copeland, p. 126)."Turing?s 1938 Princeton PhD thesis, Systems of logic based on ordinals, which includes his notion of an oracle machine, has had a lasting influence on computer science and mathematics. A work of philosophy as well as mathematics, Turing?s thesis envisions a practical goal ? a logical system to formalize mathematical proofs so that they can be checked mechanically. If every step of a theorem could be verified mechanically, the burden on intuition would be limited to the axioms. Turing?s vision of ?constructive systems of logic for practical use? has become reality: in the twenty-first century, automated ?formal methods? are now routine" (Appel). Turing studied at King?s College, Cambridge, becoming a Fellow in 1935. In that year he attended the logic lectures of the topologist M. H. A. Newman, from which he learned of the Entscheidungsproblem: Could there exist, at least in principle, a definite method or process by which it could be decided whether any given mathematical assertion was provable? His negative answer to this question was published in 1936 as On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem,? shortly after Alonzo Church at Princeton had published his own solution. Turing?s paper, containing the description of his ?universal machine,? is now recognized as the founding theoretical work of modern computer science. "It was only natural that the mathematician M. H. A. Newman should suggest that Turing come to Princeton to work with Church. Some of the greatest logicians in the world, thinking about the issues that in later decades became the foundation of computer science, were in Princeton?s (old) Fine Hall in the 1930s: Gödel, Church, Stephen Kleene, Barkley Rosser, John von Neumann, and others. In fact, it is hard to imagine a more appropriate place for Turing to have pursued graduate study. After publishing his great result on computability, Turing spent two years (1936?38) at Princeton, writing his PhD thesis on ?ordinal logics? with Church as his adviser. "[In his PhD thesis], Turing turns his attention from computation to logic. Gödel and Church would not have called themselves computer scientists: they were mathematical logicians; and even Turing, when he got his big 1936 result ?On computable numbers,? was answering a question in logic posed by Hilbert in 1928. Turing?s thesis, Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals, takes Gödel?s stunning incompleteness theorems as its point of departure. Gödel had shown that if a formal axiomatic system (of at least minimal expressive power) is consistent, then it cannot be complete. And not only is the system incomplete, but the formal statement of the consistency of the system is true and unprovable if the system is consistent. Thus if we already have informal or intuitive reasons for accepting the axioms of the system as true, then we ought to accept the statement of its consistency as a new axiom. And then we can apply the same considerations to the new system; that is, we can iterate the process of adding consistency statements as new axioms. In his thesis, Turing investigated that process systematically by iterating it into the constructive transfinite, taking unions of logical systems at limit ordinal notations. His main result was that one can thereby overcom [Attributes: First Edition]

Abraham Lincoln: The War Years (Signed Inscribed Limited Edition)

New York: Harcourt Brace, 1939. Limited Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Slipcased. From a recent auction of the John Rau collection--an attractive and fine 4 Vol. set of Sandburg's definitive work on Abraham Lincoln. This is an unnumbered personally inscribed set to "Caroline Rieser Rau 1939 Carl Sandburg" on the half-title page for Vol. 1. Carline Rieser Rau was a Chicago socialite and collector who would later go on to marry David Wallerstein--who served on the Board of Directors of McDonalds, ABC, and Disney. Wallerstein was great friends with Ray Kroc and Walt Disney. Wallerstein was famous for two things--first of all for coming up with the idea of "Supersize" for McDonalds--and for presenting Walt Disney (via Caroline Riesor who was enthralled with the book) a copy of Mary Poppins--which Disney turned into a movie by the same name. This 4 Volume set comes from the collection of John Rau--who was David Wallerstein's stepson. Superb unread condition in blue cloth and gilt lettering to the spines. Yellow top stain to all 4 vols as new. The cloth spines are a tad bit age darkened. The slipcase is near fine with a bit of soiling and edgewear to the top cover only--which is missing one fold down edge. The top cover has a silver paper label with title and description in black lettering. Four volumes with 414 halftones from phtographs and 249 reproductions of cartoons, letters, and documents. A very collectible set once owned by one of Chicago's elite families. Wallerstein also was President of the Balaban and Katz movie theater chain headquartered in Chicago--where he first came to know Disney--through their arrangment of showing Disney productions to the public.
