Uncommon Autograph Letter Signed, in English, on "Marsfield Gardens" printed stationery card, 12mo, London stationery, January 5, 1939.

      - To Mr., Stanley. "I would like visiting Edinburgh and if so I would not miss coming to the College you mention. But actually, such a visit is out of the question on account of my health." He signs with using his uncommon signature, "Sigm. Freud." Freud had been suffering from mouth cancer since 1923, with remissions. At this point, his cancer had become inoperable and speaking was painful and difficult. Freud lived in England for about six months when he wrote this letter. With Nazi influence gaining strength in Austria, he sought refuge in England because he had become a target of the Gestapo. With his wife Martha Bernays and daughter Anna, he was able to leave Vienna for London where he arrived in June 1938. This letter, unusual for its signature and in English, was penned about nine months before Freud died. Matted vertically with folio size printed photograph of Freud holding his classic cigar, printed signature, positioned above the original letter.

[Photographs - Unique Collection of photos taken at live performances staged at several Washington DC theaters between 1939-1951]

An unusual collection of original photos taken during live performances staged at several Washington, DC theaters between 1939-1951. Doctor Leslie French was a prominent Washington physician whose avocation was photography. A result of his work is this fascinating historical collection of over 400 candid black and white photographs of performers taken primarily in the 1940s at various musical and stage productions. The photos are mounted in groups of 3 to 9 on 72 cardboard sheets with handwritten notes giving the names of the performers, the name and date of the production, and the settings used on the camera. They appear to have been taken from seats in the orchestra section. The collection is a photographic panoply of famous and not so famous performers of the time. They include Helen Hayes, Katharine Hepburn, a young and handsome Gregory Peck, and Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman appearing together the year before they married. Other performers captured on film by Dr. French are Mickey Rooney, Peter Lawford (identified as Peter Lawton), Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Rex Harrison, Martha Raye, and Ed Sullivan. There are also many now more obscure acts such as the "Harmonica Rascals" and Fifi Dorsay. Most of the pictures were taken at the Capital Stage. Other theaters were the Fox Theatre, Earle Stage, and National Theater.

        Pink Danube

London: Martin Secker (1939). 218pp - London: Martin Secker (1939). 218pp. Pryce-Jones was a highly regarded writer and literary critic and editor of the Times Literary Supplement in the 1950s. A member of both the social and the intellectual elite in Britain, he moved to the United States in his later life but maintained his connections to a wide circle of prominent friends. The author's first novel, published pseudonymously, which portrays the unhappy life of a vain young Englishman and his struggles with his homosexuality in pre-Nazi Germany. Brian Howard, one of the gayest "Bright Young Things" wrote a brilliant review of the book for the New Statesman: "Pink Danube lies in what, to me, is the most comforting of modern fiction countries. To the north, lies the new, industrial town of Isherwoodstadt, and to the south, the vast, old, lazy pleasure-cities of Comptonia and Normanville, from which, one fine days, one may descry Firbank Island. It is somewhere on the central plateau, near the site of the old, deserted capital, Yellowbook, that we find Pumphrey Cottage." See Lancaster, Brian Howard: Portrait of a Failure @ 399-400.Very good in buckram binding, ex-library with several stamps on endpapers. The book is extremely rare and rarely appears in commerce. Business Cycles: A Theoretical, Historical, And Statistical Analysis of the Capitalist Process

New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc., 1939. First edition of the economist's ground-breaking work. Octavo, 2 volumes. Original cloth. Some light rubbing to the cloth, a very good set of this landmark work. From the library of economist Moses Abramovitz, with his signature to volume one. Abramovtiziz was known for his Catch-Up Growth Hypothesis, which attempted to explain what caused Western Europe's Golden Era of economic growth from 1948 until 1972 and also for his work on business cycles. First editions of Business Cycles are extremely rare.Schumpeter's theory of business cycles puts its emphasis on industrial innovations rather than banking. Schumpeter starts his account of business cycles at the top rather than the bottom of the cycle. "The reader needs only to make the experiment. If he comes to survey industrial history from, say, 1760 onwards, he will discover two things; he will find that very many booms are unmistakably characterized by revolutionary changes in some branch of industry which, in consequence, leads the boom, railways, for instance in the forties, or steel in the eighties, or electricity in the nineties.

        Astounding Science-Fiction / August 1939 / Volume XXIII, No. 6 / Heinlein First Appearance

Street & Smith Publications, New York 1939 - New York: Street & Smith Publications, 1939. First Edition. August, 1939. Volume XXIII, No. 6 . Cover by Virgil Finlay, interior illustrations by Finlay, Edd Cartier, Willie Ley and others. 9 1/8" x 6 1/2", Illustrated Wraps, 162 pp. A pleasing copy, still tightly bound. Cover is clean with some creases at corners, still brightly colored. Light rubbing to edges of spine and small wear to spine ends, with about 1/4" loss at bottom of spine. Pages have browned at the edges, but remain supple. A solid Very Good. See scans. Sci-fi immortal Robert Heinlein made his published debut in this issue with "Life-Line", a "startlingly plausible idea for forecasting a man's day of death" executed prior to Heinlein's setting of his standard thematic threads for both adult and juvenile science fiction, though hints and traces of these can be seen in the text. Other stories within: Frederick Englehardt's "General Swamp, C.I.C."; Lester del Rey's "The Luck of Ignatz"; L. Sprague de Camp's "The Blue Giraffe"; P. Schuyler Miller's "The Pleasure Trove"; Lee Gregor's "Heavy Planet"; Nelson S. Bond's "Stowaway"; and Ray Cumming's "An Ultimatum From Mars". Willie Ley offers an article, "Space War", in which he interestingly suggest that rays, beams and other weapons of science-fiction "aren't half as deadly as a weapon we already have" (and that was 1939!). Regular departments, and of course plenty of interior b&w illustrations by a variety of artists - including Virgil Finlay, Edd Cartier and Willie ley - as well. Finlay's cover art is of Lester del Rey's story, "The Luck of Ignatz". A very scarce, seminal and intriguing piece from sci-fi history, in nice condition. See scans. The Grapes of Wrath

New York: The Viking Press, 1939 - First edition, first printing. Publisher's beige cloth, boards illustrated with an image of migrant families heading West after Elmer Hader's dust jacket design, pictorial endpapers illustrated with a facsimile score for the "The Battle Hymn the Republic"; in the original first issue dust jacket, with the original ($2.75) price and "First Edition" slug intact, with an illustration by Hader depicting tenant farming families looking out on a caravan of migrant families heading West across a valley towards a mountain range. Very good, with a hint of wear and faint toning to the extremities, spotting to the top edge, otherwise bright and fresh pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, minor chipping to the spine head, some toning to the spine, a hint of light rubbing to the folds, bright and clean pages. A clean and attractive copy. In this powerful and compelling novel, Steinbeck tells the story of a poor "Okie" family, who travels westward to California after their home state of Oklahoma was decimated by the Dust Bowl in the 1930's. Steinbeck's keen sense of human emotion and humanitarian interest in the plight of the tenant farmer make this novel a classic and timeless masterpiece that provides a unique insight into the history of the American Midwest. Symbolizing the novel's motifs of sacrifice and the American dream, The Grapes of Wrath takes its title from Julia Ward Howe's "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," whose lyrics reference the Biblical apocalypse and divine deliverance from oppression. The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award in 1939 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940. It was also considered a major contributing factor in Steinbeck's 1962 awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(VAC e.V.)

London: William Heinemann Limited, 1939. London: William Heinemann Limited,, 1939. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine in red, buff endpapers. With the dust jacket. Contents lightly toned as usual, spine gently rolled but an excellent copy in the somewhat marked and frayed dust jacket with very small loss at the overlapping top edge. Dust jacket nearly Fine, just a trifle faded along the spine and with trivial creasing and wear a the crown and foot. Jacket with correct price of $2.75 and "First Edition" slug on the front flap. An excellent copy.& & Steinbeck';s classic account of the Dust Bowl and Depression era struggle of the Joad family, "The Grapes of Wrath" is a quintessential American classic. It would win both the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize committee would refer to it as Steinbeck';s "epic chronicle" upon giving him the award in 1962. The book was the best selling novel of 1939 and became instantly controversial upon its release for its depiction of farmers and worker rights. Of course, "The Grapes of Wrath" was also adapted into the classic 1940 film, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda, which was one of the first films selected by The Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. "It is a very long novel, the longest that Steinbeck has written, and yet it reads as if it had been composed in a flash, ripped off the typewriter and delivered to the public as an ultimatum." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.
