Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals. Offprint of his PhD thesis - the copy of Robin Gandy

C.F. Hodgson & Son, London 1939 - First edition, the incredibly rare offprint issue, and the copy of Robin Gandy, of Turing?s PhD thesis, "one of the key documents in the history of mathematics and computer science" (Appel), and perhaps Turing?s most formidable paper. "Systems of logic based on ordinals is a profound work of first rank importance. Among its achievements are the exploration of a means of circumventing Gödel?s incompleteness theorems; the introduction of the concept of an ?oracle machine,? thereby opening the field of relative computability; and, in the wake of the demolition of the Hilbert programme (by Gödel, Turing and Church), an analysis of the place of intuition in mathematics and logic" (Copeland, p. 126)."Turing?s 1938 Princeton PhD thesis, Systems of logic based on ordinals, which includes his notion of an oracle machine, has had a lasting influence on computer science and mathematics. A work of philosophy as well as mathematics, Turing?s thesis envisions a practical goal ? a logical system to formalize mathematical proofs so that they can be checked mechanically. If every step of a theorem could be verified mechanically, the burden on intuition would be limited to the axioms. Turing?s vision of ?constructive systems of logic for practical use? has become reality: in the twenty-first century, automated ?formal methods? are now routine" (Appel). Turing studied at King?s College, Cambridge, becoming a Fellow in 1935. In that year he attended the logic lectures of the topologist M. H. A. Newman, from which he learned of the Entscheidungsproblem: Could there exist, at least in principle, a definite method or process by which it could be decided whether any given mathematical assertion was provable? His negative answer to this question was published in 1936 as On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem,? shortly after Alonzo Church at Princeton had published his own solution. Turing?s paper, containing the description of his ?universal machine,? is now recognized as the founding theoretical work of modern computer science. "It was only natural that the mathematician M. H. A. Newman should suggest that Turing come to Princeton to work with Church. Some of the greatest logicians in the world, thinking about the issues that in later decades became the foundation of computer science, were in Princeton?s (old) Fine Hall in the 1930s: Gödel, Church, Stephen Kleene, Barkley Rosser, John von Neumann, and others. In fact, it is hard to imagine a more appropriate place for Turing to have pursued graduate study. After publishing his great result on computability, Turing spent two years (1936?38) at Princeton, writing his PhD thesis on ?ordinal logics? with Church as his adviser. "[In his PhD thesis], Turing turns his attention from computation to logic. Gödel and Church would not have called themselves computer scientists: they were mathematical logicians; and even Turing, when he got his big 1936 result ?On computable numbers,? was answering a question in logic posed by Hilbert in 1928. Turing?s thesis, Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals, takes Gödel?s stunning incompleteness theorems as its point of departure. Gödel had shown that if a formal axiomatic system (of at least minimal expressive power) is consistent, then it cannot be complete. And not only is the system incomplete, but the formal statement of the consistency of the system is true and unprovable if the system is consistent. Thus if we already have informal or intuitive reasons for accepting the axioms of the system as true, then we ought to accept the statement of its consistency as a new axiom. And then we can apply the same considerations to the new system; that is, we can iterate the process of adding consistency statements as new axioms. In his thesis, Turing investigated that process systematically by iterating it into the constructive transfinite, taking unions of logical systems at limit ordinal notations. His main result was that one can thereby overcom [Attributes: First Edition]

Abraham Lincoln: The War Years (Signed Inscribed Limited Edition)

New York: Harcourt Brace, 1939. Limited Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Slipcased. From a recent auction of the John Rau collection--an attractive and fine 4 Vol. set of Sandburg's definitive work on Abraham Lincoln. This is an unnumbered personally inscribed set to "Caroline Rieser Rau 1939 Carl Sandburg" on the half-title page for Vol. 1. Carline Rieser Rau was a Chicago socialite and collector who would later go on to marry David Wallerstein--who served on the Board of Directors of McDonalds, ABC, and Disney. Wallerstein was great friends with Ray Kroc and Walt Disney. Wallerstein was famous for two things--first of all for coming up with the idea of "Supersize" for McDonalds--and for presenting Walt Disney (via Caroline Riesor who was enthralled with the book) a copy of Mary Poppins--which Disney turned into a movie by the same name. This 4 Volume set comes from the collection of John Rau--who was David Wallerstein's stepson. Superb unread condition in blue cloth and gilt lettering to the spines. Yellow top stain to all 4 vols as new. The cloth spines are a tad bit age darkened. The slipcase is near fine with a bit of soiling and edgewear to the top cover only--which is missing one fold down edge. The top cover has a silver paper label with title and description in black lettering. Four volumes with 414 halftones from phtographs and 249 reproductions of cartoons, letters, and documents. A very collectible set once owned by one of Chicago's elite families. Wallerstein also was President of the Balaban and Katz movie theater chain headquartered in Chicago--where he first came to know Disney--through their arrangment of showing Disney productions to the public.

        The Grapes of Wrath

New York: The Viking Press, 1939.. New York: The Viking Press, 1939. First issue, with "First Published in April 1939" on copyright page and first edition notice on front flap of dust jacket. Octavo, original beige cloth. Inscribed by the author, "For Jules and Joyce and also Joan with love John Steinbeck." Below his signature Steinbeck added his "Pigasus" drawing. The recipient, Jules Buck was a movie producer; he and Steinbeck made an early attempt toward a collaborative screenplay for what would become Elia Kazan's "Viva Zapata," though Steinbeck's contribution was such that he received sole credit. Buck produced such post-war film classics as Robert Siodmak's The Killers (based on the story by Ernest Hemingway), and Jules Dassin's The Naked City. His wife Joyce Gates was an actress and their daughter Joan became the editor of French Vogue. Steinbeck reserved his flying pig doodle for close friends and associates. Fine in a fine dust jacket with a tiny closed tear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional copy. "The Grapes of Wrath is the kind of art that's poured out of a crucible in which are mingled pity and indignation… Its power and importance do not lie in its political insight but in its intense humanity… [It] is the American novel of the season, probably the year, possibly the decade" (Clifton Fadiman).

Nur die Turmfalken brunzen ruhig auf der zehn Gebote.

np (Prague): Surrealistische Edition 1939 - Oblong quarto (23.6 x 29 cm, 9-1/4 x 11-3/8 inches), wrappers, unpaginated (ii, 38pp), loose as issued. Front & rear cover collages, typography & book design by Jindrích Štyrský, with five drawings by Toyen. Edition of 40. Published in the first year of the Nazi occupation, “Only Kestrels Pee Quietly on the Ten Commandments” is the first of two cycles of work published clandestinely under the Germans. There is no colophon and it is likely that it wasn't included in the German edition. It is now known that forty German language copies were issued in 1939 and fifteen in Czech in 1940 (other German language copies seen also are lacking the colophon; some were hand-written by Heisler and without numeration). The 1940 colophon in Czech lists the entire edition in both languages. Copies were circulated privately. At this time, all public activities of modernists and liberals were declared illegal and suppressed. Until the end of the war, the surrealist group of Štyrský, Toyen and Heisler, with Karel Teige would continue working to produce powerful works in painting, poetry and photography, but now as an underground movement and part of the Inner Resistance. This work should be seen as both a surrealist statement and also an attempt to combat the insanity and degradation of meaning that was being encountered daily. In addition to the pointed spite to the Nazis, the surrealist group had undergone a severe disruption in 1937-38 with the defection of the leading surrealist poet Viteslav Nezval to a hardline Stalinist camp, defending the show trials and massive purges, as well as giving voice to a virulent anti-Semitism. Nezval had tried to dissolve the group in the falling-out; the Stalinist camp and postwar government would succeed in destroying Teige some 10 years hence through character assassination and the final orders for his arrest. The concerns expressed here were not only directed toward the menace of the Germans alone, but also to the pervasive totalitarian barbarism that threatened to engulf the entire world at the moment, the psychic and moral depravity, with rampant darkness apparently victorious. These were witnessed both collectively individually. As with other of Toyen's collaborations with Heisler, the poems are not meant to correspond to the art, but rather contribute to an overarching statement that does not easily lend itself to analysis. Štyrský would only live for another two years after this book. His collages here are late and outrageous. He would collaborate with Heisler in the next cycle together with Toyen, and also produce with Heisler the renowned Na jehlách techto dní (On the Needles of These Days) before his early death. As for Toyen, her work reaches the nadir of hopelessness in this cycle and the following one, Z kazemat spánku (From the Casements of Sleep) in 1940. All these began with Les spectres du désert (Paris, 1939) and Strelnice (The Shooting-Gallery) (1939-40) and reached completion in Schovej se válko! (Hide Yourself, War!). These latter were only published after the war, in 1946. Worldcat finds three library holdings in North America of the German language edition, none in the Czech.       Karlsruhe Staatliche Majolika Manufaktur Karlsruhe 1939-1962, 2000. Entwurf Else Bach 1939; signiert am Sockel "E. Bach"; am Boden gemarkt Karlsruhe Nr. 5127; Lit.: Bachmayer/Schmitt, Karlsruher Majolika 1901 bis 2001, S. 129 f. Maße: Höhe 24 cm, Länge 54 cm Majolika Zustand: siehe Bild; nur geringe altersbedingte Alters-/Gebrauchsspuren; insgesamt alters-/gebrauchsgemäss gut erhalten. Else Bach (geb. 7. September 1899 in Heidelberg, gest. 25.
