The Outsider and Others ---in Original Dustjacket ( Contains: Supernatural Horror in Literature; Call of Cthulhu; The Shunned House; Cats of Ulthar; Dagon; At the Mountains of Madness; Pickman's Model; Shadow Over Innsmouth; Dunwich Horror, etc)

Sauk City: Arkham House, 1939, 1st edition, 1st Printing, 1939, Hard Cover, Book Condition: Very Good+, Dust Jacket Condition: Good price Clipped, First Edition, Illustrated By: Virgil Finlay Cover Art----------hard cover, a great copy, black cloth, wee bit of rubbing to lower edge of boards and corners, corners are not bumped, a 1/8" nick to the cloth at the center of the upper spine tip (really quite small), some offset to verso of the boards, book is completely square and tight and does not have any finger marks or rubbing to the cloth on the boards and spine, top edge of text block is dusty, overall a close to Near Fine copy but I'll call this Very Good+ because of that tiny nick to the cloth, this copy has TWO DUSTJACKETS, this copy has the original dustjacket which is Good only and has been price clipped, the dustjacket has numerous chips and tears with some loss along the extremities, the upper corner of the front panel of the dustjacket has had a 2" square loss affecting the "E" & "R" in Outsider, I have lasered that portion from another jacket and laid it in place with some archival tape so visually this looks much more appealing, the verso of the dustjacket has had a brown paper backing attached most of which I was able to remove, however there are still portions that remain glued to the verso of the jacket, the brown paper backing does not have any show through to the front of the dustjacket, a bit of cello tape at upper spine tip is barely noticeable, please ask for additional scans of any portion of the book or dustjacket that you wish to see, -----as well this copy has a FINE facsimile copy of the DUSTJACKET which makes this book look absolutely brilliant on the shelf, ------in spite of the availability of many 1st editions online (making many authors like Hemingway and Steinbeck seem almost commonplace) the first two Arkham House volumes of Lovecraft writings ( The Outsider and Beyond the Wall of Sleep ) remain elusve, ----------this collection contains: Howard Phillips Lovecraft: OUTSIDER by August derleth and Donald Wandrei; and the following stories: Dagon; Polaris; Celephais; Hypnos; The Cats of Ulthar; The Strange High House in the Mist; The Statement of Randolph carter; The Silver Key; Through the Gates of the Silver Key; The Outsider; The Music of Erich Zann; The rats in the Walls; Cool Air; He; The Horror at red Hook; The Temple; Arthur Jermyn; The Picture in the House; The festival; The Terrible Old man; The Tomb; The Shunned House; In The Vault; Pickman's Model; The haunter of the dark; The Dreams in the Witch-House; The Thing on the Doorstep; The Nameless City; The Lurking Fear; The Call of Cthulhu; The Colour Out of Space; The Dunwich Horror; At the Mountains of Madness; The Shadow Out of Time; The Shadow over Innsmouth; The Whisperer in darkness, and the essay Supernatural Horror in Literature, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo

New York: Viking Press, 1939. First edition. Hardcover. A nearly fine copy of the author's masterpiece (small mark to the bottom of page ends) in a nearly fine dust jacket that has only the lightest of use. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. The book was cited prominently when Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in 1962. Set during the Great Depression, the novel focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their Oklahoma home by drought, economic hardship, agricultural changes and bank foreclosures forcing tenant farmers out of work. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, and in part because they were trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California. Along with thousands of other "Okies," they sought jobs, land, dignity and a future. Basis for the John Ford directed film that starred Henry Fonda.

Interior art [possibly for Weird Tales]

[New York]: Hannes Bok, 1939. Black and white drawing by the famed science fiction and fantasy illustrator Hannes Bok. Bok's color cover art and black and white interior drawings appeared in many science fiction and fantasy magazines of the 1940s and 1950s, among them Weird Tales, The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Famous Fantastic Mysteries, and many others. This drawing appears to be a photostat used to produce printing plates. There is no indication of where it was published, but it may be from Weird Tales; the Hannes Bok Illustration Index indicates that his only publications for 1939 were in that magazine. Given some of the imagery, it could also be for the story "The Dreadful Rabbits" by Gans T. Field, which appeared in the July 1940 issue of Weird Tales. 14 x 10-5/8 inches. Fine.

      - (DENSLOW,W.W.)illus. ORIGINAL ART: RUBBY DUB DUB THREE MEN IN A TUB FROM MOTHER GOOSE. Offered here is a large and wonderful finished pen and ink drawing for Ye Old Time Nursery Rhymes by Mother Goose. Although the book with this title was actually published in 1939 by Baldwin & Strachan in Buffalo when the art was re-discovered (after Denslow's death), the art itself was most likely executed circa 1910 when Denslow was actively illustrating advertising booklets. In their bibliography of Denslow, Greene and Hearn write about this art as follows: "The drawings were discovered in 1939 in the scrapbook of one William W. Reed. Since a man named Horace Reed was connected with Niagra Lithograph Company, it is likely that Denslow drew the pictures for one of his advertising pamphlets. The pictures first appeared in Youth Magazine, a hand-out to patrons of Dodd's Dairy in Buffalo. In issue eleven, this pamphlet was announced as available from Dodd's milkmen for ten cents." Executed on Strathmore drawing board measuring 19 1/2" wide x 14 1/2" high, the image nearly fills the entire space, signed by Denslow with his characteristic seahorse design. This is a rare opportunity to own very fine published work by Denslow. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Three framed original cartoons from "Gulliver's Travels

1939. unbound. Outstanding and historically important assemblage of three original production storyboard drawings, all created by Thomas Johnson and used in the Fleischer Studios' feature animated cartoon "Gulliver%u2019s Travels." The three drawings are part of the sequence in which King Little, Gabby, and company pass out at the banquet table soon after the gala celebration in the castle. Gulliver looks on affectionately and then proceeds to reverse the tablecloth into a blanket, tucking in his new-found friends before extinguishing the night torches. The first two drawings are matted and framed in one unit, labeled "72" and "73." Each of these drawings, measuring 7.5 x 9.5 inches, was accomplished in graphite and partially hand-colored in red, blue, and yellow pastel pencil. They are set in a double-opening olive mat framed to 20.5 x 14 inches and housed in a simple brown vintage frame. Drawing 73 is highly detailed and contains images not retained in the animated feature. More specifically, King Little, Gabby, and friends are asleep in their chairs at the banquet table while dishes and food remain. In addition, there is a bandstand adorned with a guitar and sleeping musicians that was also removed from the scene. The third drawing, measuring 6 x 7.5 inches, is matted and set in metal gold frame measuring 10.25 x 11.5 inches. It was accomplished in graphite and completely hand colored in red, blue, and yellow pastel pencils. It depicts a close-up of King Little, Gabby, and friends asleep at the banquet table with their bodies completely covered by the tablecloth as they let out exaggerated snores. Ironically, Johnson includes a finished drawing of a sleeping tramp hiding under the banquet table which he has crossed out, probably in anticipation of the rejection he would have received from Dave Fleischer. Note: "Gulliver's Travels" was the second cel-animated feature film ever released and the first produced by an American studio other than Walt Disney Productions. It was directed and produced by Dave and Max Fleischer and premiered on December 22, 1939. For cartoon aficionados who would like to match up the approximate film sequences to the above drawings, it is suggested that you view cartoon frames: 53 min. 21 sec. / 53 min. 43 sec. / 53 min. 59 sec. All items are in very good(+) condition. Newspaper cartoonist and animator best remembered for his work with Max and Dave Fleischer at Fleischer Studios in the 1930s. He worked on Betty Boop and later on Popeye shorts before contributing extensively to the feature cartoons "Gulliver%u2019s Travels" (1939) and "Mr. Bug Goes to Town" (1940).

16 Oct. 1939 - A 2-page letter of @250 words on both sides of one sheet of paper in Flagg's hand addressed to "My poor dear Sucker" [Willis Birchman: author, illustrator, and friend of Flagg's]. With an ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR at the top of the letter of a standing man with a large heart for a head nonchalantly tossing aside his human head. Flagg explains that the cartoon is his reaction to news from Birchman regarding an apparent boarder and the disruption in his life. Flagg refers to a movie he made that he wishes to show Birchman about a visitor who came for a weekend and stayed seven years. SIGNED "Monty," as he often did when writing to Birchman. Flagg, the epitome of the bohemian artist (certainly this letter gives a good taste of that), was a master of portrait studies and incisive caricatures. He created many posters for the government and is best known for his famous "I Want You" Uncle Sam recruiting poster, an American icon. He was elected to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1980. Normal creases from folding. Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]
