RdH142"

        The Legend of Useppa

Self-published - No date, but circa 1939. 5 ½ in. x 7 ¾ in. 35 pp. Black and white historical photos (inc. a portrait of Barron Collier, Sr.), plus drawings and a map. Blue cloth with black titling on the front cover. Loosely inserted are the bookplates of Barron G. Collier, Sr. (1873-1939) and of his son Barron Collier, Jr. who died in 1976. The bookplates indicate that this copy probably came from the library of one of Barron Collier's heirs. Useppa Island is off the west coast of Florida, near Gasparilla, Sanibel, and Captiva islands. It had been used by pirates as a safe haven. Legends of sunken treasure were just that---legends. Because of its archaeological significance the island was added to the U. S. National Register of Historic Places. Barron Collier bought the island in 1911, enlarging an existing hotel and adding tennis courts and a golf course. In 1960 the island was used as a training site for Cuban exiles who were preparing for the Bay of Pigs invasion. Collier was a public figure of some renown. Under his leadership, the Collier family became the largest land developer in Florida, and were involved in such projects as drainage of the Everglades. In 1923 the Florida legislature named a county in his honor. He was also a public figure in New York state, where, among other duties, he was special deputy commissioner for public safety and introduced white and yellow lines to divide traffic lanes on highways. He was decorated by nine foreign governments. John Law Kerr (1862-1952) was Barron Collier's uncle and managed various properties for the Collier companies. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

London, Longmans. 1939, 1939. First edition, Second issue binding. 8vo. Publisher's red cloth titled in black to spine, lightly sunned to extremities, with light bumping to spine ends. Very good indeed. In a very good example of the dustwrapper, minor soiling to spine panel, light wear to extremities and a couple of areas of shallow shipping to spine ends, a bright, clean and strong example of a wrapper normally seen in very poor condition.

ARCHIVE OF ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY ORIGINAL PRODUCTION AND PUBLICITY STILLS FOR 'OF MICE AND MEN'

Los Angeles: United Artists, 1939.. One hundred and fifty 7.5 x 9.5 inch (a few smaller) borderless black & white stills. Generally very good to near fine (a few corner creases, one or two with signs of oxidation). An unusually comprehensive archive, with trivial duplication, of the production and publicity stills for the 1939 film adaptation of Steinbeck's novel, directed by Lewis Milestone, starring Burgess Meredith, Lon Chaney Jr., et al. The still photographer for the film has generally been identified as Tom Evans. The collection offers unusually strong representation of the X, P, and H sequences, in many instances representing contiguous runs of images within the negative sequences. A considerable number of the stills bear the studio's mimeographed cut-lines affixed to the back, and a few bear rubber-stamped designations as "proof" prints. It would be difficult indeed to recreate such a near comprehensive collection of the stills associated with this film.

        The Grapes of Wrath

New York: Viking Press. (1939). First. First edition. Some darkening to the pastedowns, else near fine in a fair only but basically intact dustwrapper with the "first edition" slug intact on the front flap. The jacket is considerably tanned and rubbed, with small chips, most at the spinal extremities. With a small card Signed by Steinbeck laid in. Pulitzer Prize-winning classic of an Oklahoma family's migration to California during the Depression. Basis for the John Ford film featuring Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. Ford and Supporting Actress Jane Darwell won Academy Awards; Fonda was nominated but lost to Robert Donat in Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Steinbeck's masterpiece and literature's lasting testament to the Great Depression, it was singled-out in his citation for the Nobel Prize decades later. A reasonably decent copy with the first edition statement present on the front flap. .
