        Gone With The Wind

Macmillan & Co Ltd, London - UK 1939 - The most popular novel ever, Gone With The Wind, was written as a part-time hobby by a tiny, bored American Housewife who never dreamed it might be published. Bit by bit, over 10 years, she scribbled thousands of barely-decipherable pages that were jumbled up in dirty envelopes and stacked all over her flat, even under the bed. Often she gave up writing for months at a time, plagued by an inferiority complex, convinced the book was terrible, and had to be goaded by her husband to get back to work. Her passionate American Civil War love story of Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler was based on her own disastrous first marriage to a violent, drunken but exiting scoundrel on whom she based the character of Rhett. And when the book finally brought her overnight fame and millions of dollars, the sudden overwhelming success destroyed her peace of mind and creativity. She never wrote another book. ~ CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: This is the rare original dustjacket that states to the inner front prelim: 1037 pages - 10s. 6d. net. Overall condition is good. Has a few small chips to top and bottom of the spine and corners, with few small closed edge tears and creasing to the extremities. Housed in a removable protective archival sleeve for protection. Boards are green cloth with brown lettering to the spine. Colour has faded unevenly to the top and bottom of the spine, otherwise a nice clean condition. Tightly bound to the inner page block. 1037 pages. Light browning throughout, otherwise pages are clean and all pages are tightly bound. - BONUS ITEM: Photocopy of a newspaper clipping which tells Margaret Mitchell¿s real-life story. The character that Rhett was based on was that of her first husband ¿Red Upshaw¿. In 1949 she read a newspaper clipping reporting Red¿s suicide. At 47, he had jumped from the fifth floor of a sleazy hotel. Tragically, she herself had only seven months to live. ¿I¿m going to die in a car crash¿ she said. ¿I feel very certain of this¿. And so she did, knocked down in the street by a speeding driver. The love story was ended. - Very sad real-life story, behind that of ¿Gone With The Wind!¿¿ - Great addition for any Margaret Mitchell Collector. Small image laid in of Margaret Mitchell, lying in the street after being knocked down. - E N D - POSTAGE OPTIONS: Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it. - Regards from Arabella. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Mluvici pasmo

      - This private print dating from 1939 is the combined work of Milada Souckova (1899-1983) and her husband Zdenek Rykr (1900-1940). This is the first edition of Milada Souckova's significant poetic collection, illustrated with colourful linocut illustrations by Zdenek Rykr. These linocut illustrations are among the last works of Zdenek Rykr (before his suicide due to fear of the Gestapo). Zdenek Rykr is an eminent solitary artist belonging to the Czech interwar avant-garde. He is famous not only for his free paintings but also for his work in the advertising industry (for the Orion chocolate company for example). The graphics to the book were created together with the poems and question the current problems of human society; in terms of time and topic they are close to Rykr's existential drawings of women in baths. The writer Milada Souckova was part of the cultural scene of Czech interwar avant-garde; she also co-worked with the Prague linguistic circle; after the war she emigrated to the USA. "The Speaking Zone" is one of the best pieces of Czech poetry of the 20th Century. This extensive work comments on the pathetic anxieties of the time, asks for the reasons for the big spiritual crisis in the age of reason and finds shelter in language; at the same time critically evaluates the poetic practices of avant-garde. A numbered copy (n. 32/100). A book autographed by the authors Zdenek Rykr and Milada Souckova (signed with coloured pencils on the title page). The book contains six big (15 x 30 cm) full page multicoloured linocuts + two-coloured linocut on the cover by Zdenek Rykr. The linocuts are three or four coloured, some of the matrices are repeated in more than one printings. The book has an original typographic layout. The table of contents looks like a belt stretching without any indentations from the upper to the down margin, the text – typed in sans serif typeface – is divided by rows of squares. The original cover is printed in two-coloured linocut. The book is "bound" with wire spiral. A private edition by M. Souckova and Z. Rykr, 1939, Prague. Soft cover, bound with wire spiral, 24 x 30 cm, 32 pages. A very nice condition, the cover is almost imperceptibly fingered, slightly yellowed pages, the interior is clean, the linocuts are in a perfect condition; look at the photo. * Our books are stored in our warehouse, not in the shop.
