ARCHIVE OF ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY ORIGINAL PRODUCTION AND PUBLICITY STILLS FOR 'OF MICE AND MEN'

Los Angeles: United Artists, 1939.. One hundred and fifty 7.5 x 9.5 inch (a few smaller) borderless black & white stills. Generally very good to near fine (a few corner creases, one or two with signs of oxidation). An unusually comprehensive archive, with trivial duplication, of the production and publicity stills for the 1939 film adaptation of Steinbeck's novel, directed by Lewis Milestone, starring Burgess Meredith, Lon Chaney Jr., et al. The still photographer for the film has generally been identified as Tom Evans. The collection offers unusually strong representation of the X, P, and H sequences, in many instances representing contiguous runs of images within the negative sequences. A considerable number of the stills bear the studio's mimeographed cut-lines affixed to the back, and a few bear rubber-stamped designations as "proof" prints. It would be difficult indeed to recreate such a near comprehensive collection of the stills associated with this film.

Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and other literary luminaries. The tender story of a boy and a fawn, has since entered the elite pantheon of American Classics, being widely sold and studied even to this day.Newell Convers Wyeth (October 22, 1882 – October 19, 1945), known as N.C. Wyeth, was an American artist and illustrator. He was the pupil of artist Howard Pyle and became one of America's greatest illustrators. During his lifetime, Wyeth created over 3,000 paintings and illustrated 112 books,25 of them (including the Yearling), for Scribner's Classics - the work for which he is best-known. Wyeth was a realist painter just as the camera and photography began to compete with his craft. Sometimes seen as melodramatic, his illustrations were designed to be understood quickly. Wyeth, who was both a painter and an illustrator, understood the difference, and said in 1908, "Painting and illustration cannot be mixed—one cannot merge from one into the other." Wikipedia . Well executed, professional minor repair to pictorial rear endsheets at gutter. Several very light, small blemishes to front cover. A lovely, very crisp and clean copy. Darkening to chemise. [Circa 1939]. A collection of material related to The Pennsylvania Railroad Company from the 1930 and '40s. Included are four manuals of diner cars and coaches with blueprints tipped in; internal company guidebooks for the various technical systems on trains; various equipment manuals including schematics; several train-related manufacturer brochures; classification reports from the New York Central System; locomotive tests with charts tipped in; blueprints for a locomotive and its systems; and railroad employee ephemera. Overall about near fine. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company was not only the largest railroad in the United States but at one time the largest publicly traded corporation in the world, employing more than 250,000 people and with an operating budget that was sometimes larger than that of the U.S. Government. The line stretched 11,000 miles from New York to Illinois and Michigan. The company later merged with the New York Central in 1968 to form the Penn Central Corporation before filing for bankruptcy two years later. An interesting collection of railroad-related documents from the days when trains ruled the transportation and freight industry. A detailed description available upon request. .

Four papers on packaging and industrial design from the Journal of the Royal Society of Arts

London, RSA,, 1939-59. Octavo. Half vellum on marbled boards, title gilt longitudinally to the spine, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Half-tone illustrations to the text. Very good. Attractively bound volume comprising four articles by Gray extracted from the journal of the RSA over a twenty year period. Inscribed by the author to his wife on the front free endpaper, "To Gnade with all my love,Milner 1959". The papers are; "The History and Development of Packaging"(26 pages with illustrations, 5 May, 1939); "The Industrial Designer and Consumer Goods" (17 pages, 8 April 1949); "The Creative Urge" (6 pages, one illustration, 25 November 1955); "Packaging Progress" (19 pages with illustrations, August 1959). Milner Gray trained initially at Goldsmith's, spent the First World War in the Royal Engineers School of Camouflage, and in 1921 established "with fellow students Charles Bassett and his brother Henry—the Bassett–Gray Group of Artists and Writers, effectively the first British multi-disciplinary design consultancy. The group's complement of freelance creators included Gray's lifelong friend Graham Sutherland and, later, Misha Black" (ODNB). In 1930 he founded the Society of Industrial Artists (SIA), which he "came to regard as his lifetime's achievement". In 1938 he was elected Royal Designer for Industry, and in 1940 chosen to head the Ministry of Information's exhibitions branch. Post-war he was a founder member of the Design Research Unit which "soon began its ground-breaking work in a field which became a dominating factor in commerce over the next four decades: corporate identity … establishing a co-ordinated visual style across the full range of items, from printed material to vehicles, by which a company presented itself to the world." Early clients included Rolex, Ilford, and British Rail. Gray was subsequently involved "branding" the Festival of Britain, the Coronation, and the Queen's Jubilee in 1977. "In his professional life Gray did much to set the standards for designers for most of the twentieth century. His own designs—which embraced, from the early 1930s, bottles, cookware, table china, furniture, and even the Ascot gold cup, as well as graphics, exhibition design, and packaging—were always immaculate, combining craftsmanship and deep respect for materials … On a personal level he was a delightful companion, with an irreverent wit, and a formidable mimic …Gray continued to 'enjoy weak health' until he died, aged ninety-seven … [in]1997. At his own wish, he was cremated … without ceremony or witnesses, apart from his wife who had been his unfailing support in life and work for sixty-three years."

        Skylark

New York: Random House. (1939). First. First edition. Lightly soiled, and a small faint stain to one corner, very good or better lacking the dustwrapper. Basis for the 1941 Mark Dansdrich film featuring Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland, Brian Aherne, and Binnie Barnes. Raphaelson's first novel, about the neglected wife of a busy advertising executive. Inscribed to his close friend, James M. Cain, and Cain's second wife (of four) Elina: "for James and Elena [sic] with love -- Raph. New York May, 1939." Raphaelson, as a highly successful playwright and screenwriter, was one of Cain's idols. Cain spent nearly as much time writing unsuccessful plays as he did writing successful novels. They became close friends, and Cain was introduced by Raphaelson into a Hollywood crowd that eventually resulted in his third marriage, to actress Aileen Pringle. Raphaelson's first novel, about the neglected wife of a busy advertising executive. Basis for the 1941 Mark Dansdrich film featuring Claudette Colbert, Ray Milland, Brian Aherne, and Binnie Barnes. A very nice association. .
