        John Fryer of the Bounty

London: Golden Cockerel Press, 1939. Small folio, with 11 woodcuts by Averil Mackenzie-Grieve; some very light foxing, mainly to the endpapers; a good copy in original linen, gilt, very slightly marked. Daughter's notes on his life. The fifth and final title in Owen Rutter's series of Bountiana for the Golden Cockerel Press. The beautiful woodcuts are by Averil Mackenzie-Grieve. The book is based on notes by Mary Ann Fryer, daughter of the mutineer John, which enabled Rutter to complete the biographical details of the master of the Bounty and Bligh's sometimes reluctant offsider.John Fryer was one of the most experienced men in Bligh's crew, but he constantly quarrelled with Bligh's decisions, including being critical of his captain's apparent favouritism towards Fletcher Christian. His actions during the mutiny were not applauded by Bligh, who thought he did not act strongly enough in defence of his captain and his ship. As a result he was refused a reference by Bligh, but still went on to rise to the rank of post captain where he commanded several ships before retiring in 1812.From an edition of three hundred numbered copies; this copy is also signed by both the artist and by Rutter in pencil on the final leaf.

An American Exodus: A Record of Human Erosion

Reynal & Hitchcock, New York 1939 - FIRST EDITION of one of the most influential American photobooks. "Of all the documentary photobooks stemming from the New Deal, and the FSA in particular, An American Exodus by Dorothea Lange and her sociologist husband Paul Schuster Taylor is the most considered. Her pictures are as direct as those of Walker Evans, though without his studied disinterest. Lange was much more of a 'people person' than Evans ever was, and this marks her work" (Parr and Badger, The Photobook: A History). Roth 101. Note: First issue dust jacket, with Mein Kampf listed on rear panel. New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, 1939. Text by Paul Schuster Taylor. Quarto, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. Book near-fine with small bump to spine; dust jacket with fading to spine (as usual), general edgewear, mild soiling, and a closed tear near the "O" in "Exodus" on the front panel. A very good copy of a book that is extremely difficult to find in collectible condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Szemt?l szemben. [Face to Face.]

Kelet Népe (Pápai Ern?; id. Weinwurm Antal) (1939), (Budapest) - First edition. In original hard paper. With photographically illustrated dust cover. (2), 32, (4) p. 32 photos by Kata Kálmán. This work is the continuation of "Tiborc" (Parr & Badger, 140), contains portraits of peasants and workers which were not included into her formerly published book. "In general Kálmán's photographs, tightly cropped head-and-shoulder shots, demonstrate the same serene disinterest shown by Evans, with perhaps a hint of Helmar Lerski's Expressionism". (Parr-Badger: The Photobook. Phaidon, 2004.) This compilation of documentary photographs mostly differs from "Tiborc" in the lack of text. The book starts with a four line quotation from Endre Ady the progressive Hungarian poet of the early 20th century which gives the tone for the following photos. Extremely scarce book. Not in WorldCat. In original hard paper. With photographically illustrated dust cover [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Mechanism of nuclear fission" (Bohr and Wheeler) AND "On continued gravitational contraction" (Oppenheimer and Snyder) in Physical Review, September 1, 1939, Vol. 56, 5, pp. 426-50; pp. 455-59

      - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF TWO SEMINAL PAPERS IN THE HISTORY OF PHYSICS. Bohr and Wheeler's "The mechanism of nuclear fission" is the first fully worked out theory of nuclear fission and it laid the groundwork for atomic and hydrogen bombs. "The paper is a masterpiece of clear thinking and lucid writing. It reveals, at the center of the mystery of fission, a tiny world where everything can be calculated and everything understood. The tiny world is a nucleus of uranium 236, formed when a neutron is freshly captured by a nucleus of uranium 235. The uranium 236 nucleus sits precisely on the border between classical and quantum physics." By studying this process in detail, they show how the complementary views provided by classical and quantum pictures are both essential to the understanding of nature. Without the combined power of classical and quantum concepts, the intricacies of the fission process could never have been understood. Bohr's notion of complementarity is triumphantly vindicated" (Barrow, Science and Ultimate Reality, xvii). ALSO included: OPPENHEIMER & SNYDER'S "On continued gravitational contraction" constitutes the very first theoretical prediction of a singularity when a sufficiently large neutron star collapses. This phenomenon was later to be coined as a black hole. "Had J. Robert Oppenheimer not led the US effort to build the atomic bomb, he might still have been remembered for figuring out how a black hole could form" (American Physical Society). This paper has been described as the forgotten birth of black holes. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics, 1939. Royal 8vo. (10.5 x 8 inches); 267 x 203 mm. Original wraps. Some toning and scuffing around the edges, a bit of spotting front and rear. Tightly and very solidly bound. Bright and very clean within. More photos available upon request.
