Marlborough: His Life and Times, "Limited Presentation Edition"

London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., 1939. Limited Presentation Edition. Hardcover. Here is a fully jacketed set of the "Limited Presentation Edition" of 1939 with superior shelf presentation. Churchill's monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was initially conceived a full 40 years before publication of the fourth and final volume. Churchill originally considered the idea of the biography in 1898, returning to it in earnest in 1928. Marlborough ultimately took 10 years of research and writing and is the most substantial published work of Churchill's "wilderness years" in the 1930s. The final volume was published on the eve of the Second World War in 1938. Richard Langworth says "To understand the Churchill of the Second World War, the majestic blending of his commanding English with historical precedent, one has to read Marlborough." After the fourth and final volume of Marlborough was published, in December 1939 the publisher, Harrap, issued what it called a "Limited Presentation Edition" with distinctive bindings and dust jackets unique to the edition. The bindings are medium purple cloth with silver spine lettering and the dust jackets printed in black and orange on cream paper. For Volume I, there was a 1939 printing unique to this edition. For Volume II, the publisher used sheets from the first edition, second and final printing. For volumes III & IV, the publisher used sheets from the first edition, only printing. The Limited Presentation Edition bindings proved even more prone to sunning than their first edition counterparts, often toning significantly even beneath the thin dust jackets, which themselves proved quite fragile. Here is a set noteworthy for excellent shelf presentation of both the dust jackets and volumes beneath. The dust jackets remain bright with wholly unfaded spines. Moreover, the jackets show no losses, apart from neatly price-clipped lower front flaps. We note a few instances of minor spotting and soiling, but the only significant dust jacket flaw to report is a horizontal closed tear across the front face of the Volume IV dust jacket and along the lower front hinge. This tear nearly disappears beneath the clear, removable, archival quality protectors fitted to each dust jacket, and does not impact shelf presentation. The volumes beneath are all correct, Limited Presentation Edition bindings. All four bindings are square, clean, and tight. The binding spines retain excellent color, showing only a barely discernible hint of color shift. The contents are clean and bright. We find no spotting. The sole detraction is the previous ownership marks. Apparently a previous owner had both a brand new ink stamp featuring just their last name ("Talbot") and a severe impulse control problem. Consequently, the name "Talbot" is ink stamped as follows: on the Volume I front and rear pastedowns and the bottom text block edge; on the Volume II front pastedown, fore and bottom edges; on the Volume III front and rear pastedowns and fore and bottom edges; on the Volume IV front and rear pastedowns and bottom edge. This is the only previous ownership name in the set and while inane and regrettable, does nothing to detract from the superior shelf presentation and overall condition of the set. Moreover, the presence of the ink stamps leads us to price this set at lower than its condition would otherwise indicate. Bibliographic reference: A97.5, Woods/ICS A40(ad), Langworth p.172

Framed original animation production drawing from the 1939 Betty Boop short "Musical Mountaineers

1939. unbound. This 7.5 x 9.5-inch image was drawn in graphite with the border outlined in blue pastel pencil. It is attractively double-matted in blue and grey, framed to 13.5 x 15.25 inches, and set in an ornate silver and gold wooden frame. The drawing depicts a hillbilly woman pulling a horse plow while her husband comfortably rides on the back. The complete drawing was executed by Thomas Johnson who chose to illuminate the image of the husband riding on the back of the plow when the scene was animated. For avid fans who would like to match up the approximate film sequence to this drawing, it is suggested to view the frames from 1:15 to 1:19. The original title of this cartoon was supposed to be Betty Boop in "Hillbillies" and this is evident from a sequence of rare Fleischer storyboards that are currently online. In 1939 the Fleischer brothers stopped releasing Betty Boop cartoons, partly because of the ever increasing problems of clearing censorship. Provenance: from the artist to his nephew and from the nephew to a friend (with an inscription on the back). Near fine condition. Newspaper cartoonist and animator best remembered for his work with Max and Dave Fleischer at Fleischer Studios in the 1930s, especially in the creation of the "Betty Boop" and "Popeye" shorts.

        Eigenh. Briefentwurf.

[Princeton, 18. XI. 1939].. 2½ SS. auf 2 Bll. Gr.-4to.. - Thomas Mann, Briefe 1937-1947, SS. 134/135.

        Rogue Male [aka Man Hunt]

London: Chatto and Windus, 1939., 1939. First edition. 8vo. Publisher's purple cloth titled in white to spine, minor edgewear and bumping to extremities, corners sharp, binding strong and smart. In a striking example of the very scarce pictorial dustwrapper, unfortunately faded to spine panel and with a two inch closed tear to the front hinge, chipped to spine ends with some loss to head of spine just clipping the title. Nevertheless shows well, a handsome copy of a title very rarely seen in any form of dustwrapper. An increasingly overlooked tale of adventure in which a sporting tourist indulges in a spot of ill-advised envelope pushing. A wonderful suspense. Also published as 'Man Hunt' in 1942, and the basis for the 1941 film of the same title directed by Fritz Lang. Hubin; Crime Fiction IV. p763.
