The Grapes Of Wrath - 1st Edition/1st Printing

New York: Viking Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1939. First Edition; First Printing. Original Cloth. A beautiful first printing of the first edition in just about Fine condition with the original first edition dust-jacket with price ($2.75) stated, Near Fine condition with vibrant color front and back, slight chipping along spine ends and expected rubbing at only very mildly darkened spine. Original beige cloth, top edges stained yellow. Goldstone/Payne A12a; John Steinbeck's great American modern novel tells a timeless and universal story of man's struggle against injustice and inhumanity. Set in Oklahoma, where crops were destroyed by the Dust Bowl, the bank that owns the land the families have lived and worked on for so long is pulling out, in some cases actually destroying their homes. The displaced Joad family heads to California, where supposedly there are lots of jobs for farmers. Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize for Literature and obtained the 1940 Pulitzer Prize for this title .

"Scotch and Soda" [with] untitled short story typescript

New York, n.d. [Ca. late 30s]. 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. Fine condition. 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. Two Unpublished Short Story Typescripts by J. Blan Van Urk. J. Blan Van Urk, author of The Story of American Foxhunting and other sporting histories, as well as the children's book Little Charlie the Fox left, on his death, the typescripts of two short stories, offered here. The first is "Scotch and Soda", which bears his notation: "A satirical yarn about two cream-colored mules (based on fact). Should be illustrated with drawings showing these extraordinary animals in front of plow, foxhunting, playing polo, and jumping". Present are the original 15-page typescript and two carbons, one of which has been edited by the author with various corrections, deletions and additions. The second story, a ten-page carbon, is untitled; it is in the form of a letter home from one of a pair of young ladies who have come to New York to visit the 1939-40 World's Fair, and is replete with the names of the day--Gypsy Rose Lee, Groven Whalen, Thomas E. Dewey, and others, amid much amusing social satire. We have been unable to trace these stories, and believe they remain unpublished.

An American Exodus: a Record of Human Erosion.

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock,, 1939. Quarto. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover. With the dust jacket. Monochrome illustrations throughout after photographs by Lange. Price-clipped jacket with light creasing at head of front panel, light soiling to back panel, a few nicks, small plain mark on front cover of binding, light spotting to endpapers. An excellent copy. First edition, first printing, in the first issue jacket with Mein Kampf advertised on the back panel. This is one of the landmark photobooks to come out of America in the 1930s, and is listed in Roth's 101 seminal photographic books of the 20th century. "Of all the documentary photobooks stemming from the New Deal, and the Farm Security Administration in particular, An American Exodus by Dorothea Lange and her sociologist husband Paul Schuster Taylor is the most considered" (Parr & Badger). However, "despite excellent reviews, sales were disappointing. John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, published ten months earlier, had stolen the book's thunder. Indeed, "Steinbeck in Pictures" was the title of one review of An American Exodus. Actually, it was the reverse: Steinbeck's powerful text was, in effect, Dorothea Lange in words. Her photographs had inspired Steinbeck's novel and also the the film that followed. The movie... opened to critical and popular acclaim in January 1940, the same month that [the book] was released... Yet An American Exodus was influential" (Anne Whiston Spirn, Daring to Look: Dorothea Lange's Photographs & Reports from the Field, 2008, p. 38).

        The Conquest of The Arctic.

London: Harrap, 1939., 1939. SIGNED FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp. 284. Bound in publisher's light blue cloth titled in pale silver to spine, in a pictorial dustjacket depicting modes of transport heading towards the North Pole. Cloth in excellent condition with limited signs of wear. Endcaps a little pushed, with superficial rubbing here and there. Textblock externally spotted, but clean throughout. Dustjacket is excellent: bright, clean, unclipped, with a few small closed tears and chips, and a little soiling to the rear panel. A visually striking book. Ewing was the author of the 'First Books for Home and School' in the 1940s. Segal's work is a scholarly account of passages into the Arctic, from the ancients to more modern accounts. Thrilling rescues from treacherous ice floes and feats of daring-do are waiting to be found inside this item.

The identity tag or pass of one Richard Green, a prisoner of war of the Japanese during the Second World War

      - It is a piece of white cloth (approximately 80 x 86 mm, slightly unevenly cut on all sides, with the top 6 mm turned over), printed with an unidentified emblem in the centre. This is a five-pointed white star set within, and almost to the circumference of, a 50 mm red circle; in essence, it resembles the Japanese national flag surmounted by a white star. Japanese text is printed in black down both sides and across the bottom margin. The cloth is in excellent condition, apart from some light stains. It has been inserted in a sheet of rigid cellulose nitrate sheet film; this has been folded in half along the top edge, with a metal eyelet pierced through it near the centre of the fold, and machine-stitching along the left and bottom edges (only a small portion of the fine thread remains). 'Eastman-Nitrate-Kodak 3' is imprinted on one edge, which also has the V-shaped notches identifying nitrate film. (Due to the inherent instability of cellulose nitrate, production of portrait and commercial sheet films was discontinued in 1939; aerial films followed in 1942. Its use here would appear to be as recycled obsolete material.) The sheet film is a little marked and uniformly discoloured yellow, with a short split near the eyelet, but essentially it is also in excellent condition. The right-hand column of printed text can be translated as 'Enemy released under oath'; the name 'Richard Green' on the left-hand side, and the number '56' at the bottom, have been added by hand in black ink. A thorough search through information on prisoner of war relics located approximately fifty examples of means of identification of prisoners of war. The great majority are metal tags engraved with a unique identification number (often the soldier's service number), the prisoner's country of origin, and whether he is an officer or enlisted man. However, examples in institutional collections show that a bewildering range of other formats and materials (including wood, paper, bamboo, plastic and - rarely - cloth) was used; very few examples mention the prisoner by name. Our research has discovered at least three Richard Greens who were interned by the Japanese - an Australian (NX73681 Private Richard Harold Green, 2/19th Battalion, who was in Changi Prison), and two Americans (one a Captain and one a civilian, both interned in the Philippines) - and there may well have been more. We cannot assign this tag with any degree of certainty to any particular individual, or even to any particular country of imprisonment, but ongoing research makes it unlikely that it was issued to the Australian private. Recent correspondence from Dr Kaori Maekawa, one of the POW Research Network Japan members living in the Netherlands, refers to a similar item in the collection of the Netherlands Institute of War Documentation (NIOD). The small cloth tag has the same star motif and printed text ('Enemy released under oath'), with the handwritten name and number 'Zaalberg 733'. This is attached to an armband on which is written 'Interpreter, P.H. Zaalberg, M.K.K.' (the latter being possibly the institution where Zaalberg worked as an interpreter). Dr Maekawa knows of a number of cases where civilians or POWs were taken as interpreters or engineers, and were granted the status 'Released on oath' by local Japanese Military Administration authorities. Apart from the fact that this item was purchased privately in Australia some decades ago, the provenance of this prisoner-of-war identity tag remains a mystery; however, its very existence is in itself remarkable.         Autograph manuscript poem signed

1939 - AUDEN, W. H. Autograph manuscript poem signed. No place, no date [circa 1936]. Octavo, one leaf, written on one side only, 20 lines, five verses in black ink. $8500.Autograph manuscript of the first published version of Auden’s classic poem “Autumn Song” (here untitled) in Auden’s hand, signed by him and with an interesting correction. When Auden initially wrote out the poem, he mistakenly omitted the third verse. He then went on to include this verse beneath his signature, drawing an arrow to its proper place, with his note “Sorry, I forgot this verse (I have no copy here). W.H.A.”“Autumn Song” initially appeared in Auden’s 1936 collection Look, Stranger! In the coming years, Auden revised the poem substantially, with line alterations in the second, third and fourth stanzas, and a completely rewritten final stanza. The revised poem is now usually found in collections and anthologies, such as Mendelson’s definitive edition of Auden’s Collected Poems. This fair copy, however, hews closely to the earliest published version, indicating that it was probably written out sometime closer to the 1936 publication date, before the poet had considered revising. The poem reads in its entirety:“Now the leaves are falling fast,Nurse’s flowers will not last;Nurses to the graves are gone,And the prams go rolling on.“Whispering neighbors, left and right,Pluck us from our real delight; And the active hands must freezeLonely on the separate knees.“Dead in hundreds at the backFollow wooden in our track,Arms raised stiffly to reproveIn false attitudes of love.“Starving through the Iron WoodTrolls run scolding for their food; And the nightingale is dumb,And the angel will not come.“Cold, impossible, aheadLifts the mountain’s lovely headWhose white waterfall could blessTravellers in their last distress.” In this manuscript version Auden inadvertently omitted the third verse. He then included it at the end, beneath his signature, with an arrow indicating where it should be inserted, with a brief apology to the recipient: “Sorry, I forgot this verse (I have no copy here).” He has initialed this note. “Iron Wood,” in the first line of the fourth verse, appeared in the published version of this poem as “leafless wood.” Faint fold lines. Fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        The Outsider and Others

Sauk City: Arkham House, 1939 - One of the most important publications in the history of the genre. Virtually unknown during his lifetime except to a small group of young admirers, Lovecraft's fame has steadily risen since his untimely death at the age of 46. Today his influence on the modern literary imagination is inestimable, and his praises have been sung by such diverse writers as Joyce Caol Oates, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, and Jorge Luis Borges. He was the first genre writer to have his work collected in the Library of America, and his works have inspired a number of films and countless literary imitations. This book, one of only 1200 copies printed, introduced Lovecraft to his first wider readership, and was hailed instantly as a classic. A fine copy in the original dustwrapper illustrated by Virgil Finlay. The jacket has a very small chip to the base of the spine panel, which has the remnants of a small old tape reinforcement to the interior. There is some light shelfwear at the head of the spine and the points. A superior example of a rare and desirable book. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Profits, Interest, and Investment.

London: George Routledge and Sons, Ltd,, 1939. And other Essays on the Theory of Industrial Fluctuations. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. A small red ink stamp of Katayama's Library to title page and a couple of acquisition stamps in blue ink to rear free endpaper. Extremities slightly rubbed, inner hinges a touch tender, light foxing throughout. A very good copy in a slightly rubbed jacket with toned spine panel, nicked and creased extremities, and a closed tear to the front joint. First edition of this collection of seven essays on industrial fluctuation, the first of which, "Profits, Interest, and Investment" was published here for the first time. This essay extends and refines the main argument that Hayek made in the lecture series published as Prices and Production in 1931, restating it "on somewhat different and more realistic assumptions and in less abstract forms".

[Journal]: Notes on the Period of August and September 1939 at the Start of the European War of 1939

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). 1939-1941. Small black three-ring binder. Quarto. Binding is very good with wear to the edges and the bottom front joints starting. Contents very good with reading wear at the ring holes and some modest toning and offsetting. Contains roughly 350 densely-typed pages, both recto and verso, with occasional ephemera mounted throughout. More than 150,000 words, and appears complete. An extraordinary vernacular history of the outbreak of World War II. Though the title page suggests a diary covering only a brief period, the project seems to have quickly outgrown Bacon's original intentions. From the German invasion of Poland (September 1, 1939) through the bombing of Pearl Harbor, for more than two years Bacon records the latest news and developments from Europe and elsewhere.Summarizing (and sometimes transcribing) both radio reports and newspaper headlines, Bacon writes clearly and with a strong narrative, often deftly juggling multiple developments throughout the world. Bacon's father appears to have been a prominent Quaker from the Philadelphia area, which may account for his obsession with the war. He attended Haverford College from 1920-23. Curiously, the Haverford yearbook contains this remembrance of Bacon: "[B]y no means the least marvelous of his accomplishments is his uncanny ability to sit down at a typewriter and tear off unlimited numbers of theses at the terrific rate of nearly a thousand words per hour."An intriguing day-to-day account of the war by a Philadelphia pacifist. .
