        Typed Manuscript Signed

1939. Signed. LEWIS, Sinclair.Typed Manuscript Signed.Detroit: February 23, 1939.Fine typed sentiment by Sinclair Lewis--"The struggle today is not one between communism and fascism; it is a struggle between tolerance and bigotry"--signed by him and handsomely framed with a portrait."The struggle today is not one between communism and fascism; it is a struggle between tolerance and bigotry—bigotry preached equally by communism and fascism. Here in this country the worst Fascists are those who, disowning fascism, preach enslavement to capitalism under the cloak of liberty and the constitution. They steal not only wages but honor. It rests with the liberals and the tolerant to preserve our civilization. Everything of importance in this world has been accomplished by the free inquiring spirit and the preservation of that spirit is more important than any social system. That spirit must prevail. So long as it does it won't happen here."Sinclair Lewis never did get to fulfill his ambition to write a novel about political idealism, but he did state his views about liberalism in his anti-Fascist novel that was published in 1935, It Can't Happen Here--the same views that he succinctly expresses in this manuscript. In this tour de force, applauded by many for its point of view, he wrote in one passage: "More and more, as I think about history… I am convinced that everything that is worth while in the world has been accomplished by the free, inquiring, critical spirit, and that the preservation of this spirit is more important than any social system whatsoever. But the men of ritual and the men of barbarism are capable of shutting up the men of science and of silencing them forever." Again, in late 1938 and early 1939, after his anti-Communist novel The Prodigal Parents was published, "in his lectures and interviews, Lewis was pleading for individualism and independent judgment and struggle against the conformist barrage of press agents, salesmen, radio and motion pictures, every kind of propagandist organization, including organizations to fight propaganda" (Mark Schorer, Sinclair Lewis: An American Life). Framed in ivory, gray and antique gilt, with a photograph.Written in very light ink. Fine condition.

Decisive Battles: Their Influence upon History and Civilisation

London: Eyre and Spottiswoode,, 1939?-40. Vol. I. From Alexander the Great to Frederick the Great. Vol. II. From Napoleon the First to General Franco. 2 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to spines. With 53 full-page maps and plans. A little rubbed, some sunning, particularly to the spine of volume II, volume I a touch cocked, light toning, a very good set. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed in both volumes to Elizabeth Haig (or Hall?), Volume I inscribed on 9 November 1939 with the name and date in another hand, Volume II on 28 March 1940, both volumes signed by Fuller. Extremely uncommon, particularly so inscribed, as here, each in the year of publication. The larger part of this edition was destroyed in the Blitz, which was a stroke of good fortune for Fuller's reputation as the text has been described by Anthony Trythall, Fuller's first biographer and a far from hostile witness, as "shrill Fascist special pleading." Fuller was able to "prune it of Fascist encrustation" (Brian Holden Reid in ODNB), and expand it in the 1950s, in the process turning it into "the major work on which his reputation as a historian must rest … thenceforward he was able to bask in the sunshine of a prophet restored to honour in his own country…" (Michael Carver in DNB). With a 7-page promotional leaflet for the work laid in, together with the 4-page order of service for Fuller's oddly entirely Christian funeral at St Margaret, Westminster.

        THE MASK OF DIMITRIOS

Hodder & Stoughton Limited, [1939]., 1939. First edition. Signed and inscribed on the title page in ink by the author to fellow mystery writer and journalist Wayne Warga, "Wayne Warga from Eric Ambler. Los Angeles, 25 February 1982. Dear Wayne, This must be the rarest of my first editions. I'm glad to have seen it again. Eric." This copy also has the bookplate of the renown mystery collector, Adrian Homer Goldstone, which is affixed to the front pastedown sheet. Near fine, bright, square copy in dust jacket with light professional restoration by an expert paper conservationist. Housed in a cloth clamshell case with a leather label on the spine and titles stamped in gold gilt. A rare book in the first edition as most copies were lost when Nazi bombs destroyed the Hodder & Stoughton warehouse during World War II. A Haycraft/Queen cornerstone of detective and mystery fiction and the basis of the classic film starring Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre. As the most recent former owner of this book, Wayne Warga was the youngest editor at LIFE MAGAZINE at age 25, he reported on John F. Kennedy's race for the Presidency, and went on to cover the Civil Rights movement for the magazine. For many years, Warga was one of the leading writers at the Los Angeles Times where he did in-depth articles and features on writers and people in the arts. Later, he became a mystery novelist, creating three well-received bibliomysteries: "Hardcover," "Fatal Impressions," and "Singapore Transfer," featuring Los Angeles rare book dealer, Jeffrey Dean. A choice item with an impressive provenance.

        The Ugly Duckling

C Heath title Little Pig's Picnic and Other Stories by Margaret Wise Brown. Housed in a blue cloth solander box. Walt Disney Studio illustrations throughout. Page 5 without the celluloid illustrations, An excellent set. First edition, first printing. A fantastic group of original Disney Studio celluloids. Due to accurate representations being distorted with some license holders, Disney decided that in house illustrators were their best option in accurate representations of their characters, which resulted in stories such as this one having it's illustrations as celluloid pieces. This item was featured in 1997 October issue of Walt Disney's Comics, the article states that very few of these original story board celluloids survived given their fragile nature, making this group a rare collection. Included with this is a copy of Brown' s Little Pig' s Picnic and Other Stories which featured this story.

        Spiezer Bilder-Chronik 1485.

Geneve, Roto-Sadag, 1939. 2°, 90 S. (Einführung, Text d. Handschrift), 344 faksimilierten Blätter sind teilweise farbig., Ganzpergament. m. Deckelillustration, Minimalst stockfleckig, sehr schönes Exemplar. Preis in CHF: 600.

The mechanism of nuclear fission. Offprint

1939 - First Theoretical Paper on Nuclear Fission Bohr, Niels (1885-1962) and John A. Wheeler (1911-2008). The mechanism of nuclear fission. Offprint from The Physical Review 56 (1939). 426-450pp. 268 x 200 mm. Original printed wrappers. Fine copy. First Edition, Offprint Issue of the first theoretical paper on nuclear fission. In January 1939 Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch, with Bohr’s encouragement, published a letter in Nature announcing their discovery of nuclear fission in uranium. The news took the scientific world by storm, with over 100 papers on uranium fission experiments appearing in the next twelve months, but Bohr was the only one during this period to publish on the theoretical aspects of this phenomenon. Collaborating with American physicist John A. Wheeler, Bohr worked out in great detail the complete theory of nuclear fission, publishing the results in the present paper. "In this work Bohr met with two old loves: the compound nucleus of 1936 and the study of the relation between surface tension and surface vibrations . . . Bohr and Wheeler discussed many other features: whether other nuclei can fission, the competition between fission and other possible fates of the compound nucleus, the fate of the fission fragments, the possibility of instantaneous neutron emission accompanying fission, etc. The work with Wheeler was the last major novel contribution to physics by Bohr [emphasis ours]" (Pais, Niels Bohr’s Times, p. 458). "Though it would be refined further, the theory of Bohr and Wheeler was accepted, and continued to remain ever since, as the standard description of the mechanism of nuclear fission" (Mehra & Rechenberg, The Historical Development of Quantum Theory, 6, p. 1006). She then returned to Paris and continued her art education at the Académie Humbert, where she changed her focus to oil painting. During the early years of the 20th century, Laurencin was an important figure in the Parisian avant-garde. A member of both the circle of Pablo Picasso, and Cubists associated with the Section d'Or, such as Jean Metzinger, Albert Gleizes, Robert Delaunay, Henri le Fauconnier and Francis Picabia, exhibiting with them at the Salon des Indépendants (1910-1911) and the Salon d'Automne (1911-1912).She became romantically involved with the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, and has often been identified as his muse.         YEARLING

      - (WYETH,N.C.)illus. THE YEARLING by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons 1939 (1939 A). 4to, (7 1/2 x 9 3/8"), dark blue cloth (buckram) with deer head in gold on cover, spine stamped in gold with no ornaments, top edge plain, Fine condition in publisher's blue slipcase with a deer head on white printed paper label (case slightly rubbed on edges else sound and VG+). LIMITED TO ONLY 750 COPIES FOR SALE-SIGNED BY BOTH WYETH AND RAWLINGS. Two interesting facts have emerged about this edition. First, although 750 copies were printed, only 520 copies were actually bound and sent out with the light blue binding, chemise and slip case found on many copies. The remaining 250 copies were bound with the limited edition sheets in this dark blue cloth with a darker blue slipcase and were distributed later. Secondly, according to letters from Rawlings to her editor, as the limited edition sheets were being printed she discovered that there was a line missing on page 196 (between lines 5 and 6). A new signature with the correction was inserted but not before some sheets were distributed. This copy, although in the later binding, has the earlier uncorrected sheets so there was apparently no rhyme or reason as to how they managed this error. Illustrated by Wyeth with pictorial endpapers, 14 full page color illustrations, title page decoration, plus 2 special charcoal and wash full page illustrations done for this limited edition. Also included is a facsimile of a 2 page letter by Wyeth discussing the book (not present in the trade edition). Wyeth reportedly traveled to Cross Creek, Rawlings' home, before beginning the artwork, in order to capture the essence of the area. Very scarce.         A corrected draft by Frank Lloyd Wright with over 20 words in his hand defending his style: "? fresh and new in every building I build ? I suggest you put a gently sloping roof on any LE CORBUSIER OR GROPIUS just to see what you have left ?"

"Important Typescript Signed in type, ""Frank Lloyd Wright,"" 5 pages, 8.5"" x 11"", Taliesin, August 1939, with numerous corrections and emendations in his hand throughout, a draft of his article entitled ""To the Fifty-Eighth,"" Expected folds, some minor marginal wear, minor staple holes at top margin, else fine. The article, which appeared in the October 1939 issue of The Journal of the Royal Institute of Architects, was a rebuttal to criticisms levelled at him after a lecture he delivered in London in May 1939 attacking the ""International Style"" of architecture. Wright opens his pointed rebuttal: ""If printed reactions to my talks in London ?" no speaker really ?" which should HAVE reached me there, but now reach me at Taliesin mean anything, I have succeeded in getting myself pretty thoroughly misunderstood and well disliked, especially by those who should have been quick to understand me. i refer to the 58th variety ?" Countering accusations that his compatriots at Taliesin have their heads in the sand, contributing little substance to the field, he retorts: ""Once and for all, concerning this constantly repeated reference to my contribution to Architecture as a kind of romanticism: because any attempt on their part to establish a 'contemporary vernacular' is defied by the revelations of principle eternally fresh and new in every building I build - they DRAG IN THE term 'Romanticism' is dragged in to conceal their own impotence whereas it rally only explains it. I suggest you put a gently sloping roof on any LE CORBUSIER OR GROPIUS just to see what you have left of the so-called International Style after proper deductions have been made.""Wright's central problem with the International Style was that man had become the tool of the machine: ""... Where is that creative force today? THE man is not using the Machine! The machine is using the man and is using him so he is losing himself, ... becoming a 'thing' beneath his push button and steering wheel ... If he [the creative artist] still exists now he will probably be found under some other name, because, as he stood, the machine ahs already wiped him out as any constructive element in social life today. I foresaw this possibility. I did not accept it."""

ARCHIVE Of FOUR TLS LETTERS FROM RICHARD HALLIBURTON'S CHINESE JUNK "The SEA DRAGON"; November 1938 to February 1939. Two Photographic Images of the "Sea Dragon" included

The Trans-Pacific Chinese Junk Expedition, Inc, (San Francisco) Shanghai / Macao / Hong Kong 1939 - Pages within the letters: 5, 3, 4, 3 [Total of 16 typewritten pages]. Who took the first aerial picture of Mount Everest after receiving express permission by stunning the Majarajah of Nepal with bi-plane aerobatics? Richard Halliburton was a legendary American travel writer and adventurer. Reading stories of his feats and antics seem surreal - after all, who flies an airplane upside down over the Taj Mahal? Halliburton was born in January of 1900 in Brownsville, Tennessee. Deciding at an early age not to settle down and grow old with a wife and family as the rest of his family and friends seemed to be doing. After graduating from Princeton, Halliburton traveled on as many adventures as possible and published his first novel, The Royal Road to Romance, in 1925 at the tender age of 25. His first novel became a bestseller, and was followed by more published adventures in 1927 and 1929. He enjoyed fame and adventures for a little over a decade, before deciding in 1938 that his next grand feat would be to cross the Pacific ocean from Hong Kong to the San Francisco International Exposition in a Chinese Junk ship, made expressly for his purposes. It is on this voyage that Halliburton and the entire crew of the Junk the "Sea Dragon" were lost at sea, having gotten caught in a typhoon. In 1945 a 150-foot ship outline with Chinese lettering washed ashore in California, this thought to possibly be some of the wreckage of the "Sea Dragon." Letter I: Halliburton describes the arrival in China and purpose of the expedition, as well as his interest in junks stemming from a 1 ft. scale model he sailed as a child. He explains that he chose to use a junk for his journey because of their stability, and notes that it is possible it will not be the smoothest ride. He quips: "If the junk should be small, the storms violent, and the voyage long - all the better. For if there is no hazard, no battle, where is the sport?" He introduces the "friends" of the expedition to his crew of Captain John Welch, Henry von Fehren, "Bru" Potter, among others. Halliburton also spends a significant amount of time discussing the war with China and Japan and the Japanese belief systems. Letter 2: The second letter discusses the search for an appropriate junk, and the ultimate decision to build their own that could be modified for the journey. Working with the man said to be the best ship-builder in Hong Kong (Mr. Fat Kau), and the appropriation of a few more crew members (a chef and a radio operator). Letter 3: The third letter, posted from Canton, desribes their taking the Sea Dragon out for a "shake down" cruise, with Mr. Fat Kau as his guest (who, though a builder of ships, had never sailed on one), and with high seas nearly everyone aboard became seasick. Halliburton notes the dry deck despite the high waves and believes he was right about the Sea Dragon's sea-worthiness. Much of the rest of the letter is spent discussing Canton, the disputes between the Chinese and Japanese, the destruction, the looters, and other conditions in the city. Letter 4: After setting out on their voyage, the Sea Dragon needed to return after only 2 days due to sickness on the boat. Though Halliburton seems only a trifle annoyed at the delay of their voyage, he is excited enough to try again, and leaves his readers with this: "In about another week we plan to leave again, to slip away as quietly as possible, and head east, once more around the southern tip of Formosa - and straight on to Midway. If all goes well, the next letter, the fifth, will carry an American stamp, for Midway Island is American. When this, the fourth letter, reaches you, we'll be a thousand miles along the way - I hope. Many thanks, again, for your interest and good will. Faithfully, Richard Halliburton" Modest wear to paper (some light age-toning and rubbing to papers). Envelopes rubbed and worn. Withal, a VG lot. Letters typewritten to buff paper, envelopes with blue seal of the "Sea Dragon" with illustration pr

        Gas Light; Angel Street

London: Constable & Company; Samuel French. Good/Not Issued. 1939. First Edition. Card Covers. 7.25" X 5" A rare collection of four publications comprising the UK and US first editions of the play together with theatre programs of the first performances from the Apollo Theatre in London and the John Golden Theatre, New York. The 1939 first edition of "Gas Light" is from the library of the actor Derek Glynne who has signed his name on the title page. (n.b., not signed by the author). The play was first performed on December 5th, 1938, at the Richmond Theatre, Richmond (UK) and produced by Gardner Davies; it was subsequently made into a number of films. Octavo; (1-6), 7-83, (84). A Victorian thriller in four acts. This copy is marked "PROMPT" on the front cover and was clearly used for that purpose in an early performance of the play. Marginalia, underlinings, instructions and deletions in pencil throughout the publication giving an insight into the interpretation of the play for this particular production. Some areas of loss to the paper spine, wear consistent with the age and history of the publication but given the somewhat ephemeral nature of the publication it has survived well. The London "Gas Light" theatre programme is in very good condition and contains photographs of the original cast together with period advertisements; the cover artwork is similar to the Constable and Company play publication. The play was published and performed in the US as "Angel Street". The play was published by Samuel French and was first performed in the US in 1942 at the John Golden Theatre, New York. This publication is in very good condition. The Playbill (programme) contains details of the original US cast (Vincent Price played Mr Manningham) together with many period advertisements; small amount of wear but in very good condition given its ephemeral nature. This collection of four publications is very scarce and would be difficult to replicate. "Firmly rooted in the French 19th-century tradition, BüsserÂ’s symphonic and choral writing is indebted to Gounod and Saint-Saëns. He is best known, however, for his dramatic works, which betray Wagner's impact in both their form and their use of the orchestra. The influence of Debussy, whose advice Büsser sought over the opera that became his most successful, Colomba (c1902–10), is also evident in certain harmonic procedures and in an acute sensitivity to orchestral colour. The ballets, such as the light-hearted La ronde des saisons (1905) with its amusing descriptive touches, provide further evidence of his keen dramatic sense." Barbara L. Kelly in Grove Music Online.
