[Anti-Nazi Periodical]: The Hour. Issues 1-153 [complete]

New York: The Hour / The American Council Against Nazi Propaganda. 1939-1943. First. Three volumes bound in blue cloth gilt containing the complete run of the Anti-Fascist Newsletter, The Hour. Quarto. Various paginations. Likely bound by the publisher. Slight rubbing along the edges of the spine, very near fine, and internally fine. Issued by the American Council against Nazi Propaganda. Born into a conservative family, Kahn, the founder and editor, served in an ambulance squad in the Spanish Civil War, and later joined the Communist Party. He started this widely influential newsletter investigating pro-Nazi and Fascist movements in the U.S. He later formed the left-wing publishing firm Cameron and Kahn, and was repeatedly investigated by the U.S. Government. The Hour was re-issued by a scholarly reprint publisher in 1970, but complete runs of original issues are uncommon. .

In Stalin's Secret Service (First Edition)

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1939. First Edition. First Edition. In a Very Good example of the rare dust jacket. Walter Krivitsky (1899-1941) was an intelligence officer for the Soviet Union, notable for revealing plans of a Nazi-Soviet nonaggression pact (signed in 1939) before he defected only weeks before the outbreak of World War II. With the help of journalist Isaac Don Levine and literary agent Paul Wohl, Krivitsky produced this inside account of Stalin's underhanded methods, appearing first in serial form in April 1939 in the "Saturday Evening Post." After the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) were notified of Krivitsky's literary treason, efforts were made to silence him. On February 10, 1941, he was found dead in his hotel room in Washington, D.C., with three suicide notes by the bed. David Clay Large reported, in his 1991 book "Between Two Fires: Europe's Path in the 1930s" that just prior to his death, Krivitsky confided (to a friend): "If I am ever found apparently a suicide, you will know the NKVD caught up with me." Very Good plus in a Very Good dust jacket. Slight spine lean, tiny bruise to the front board, light bumped to a couple of corners. Moderate wear to the jacket extremities, moderate rubbing overall.

        THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN.

New York:: Alfred A. Knopf,. 1939.. First U.S edition in a single volume. Translated from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter. SIGNED BY MANN on the title page. First published in Germany in 1924 and widely considered to be one of the most influential works of 20th-century German literature, MAGIC MOUNTAIN reflects Mann's experiences and impressions when his wife, who was suffering from a lung complaint, was confined to Dr Friedrich Jessen's "Waldsanatorium" in Davos, Switzerland, for several months during the outbreak of the First World War, the conflict and aftermath of which led to major revisions to this book. Ex-library copy, though not from a circulating library and therefore without many of the usual markings and with none at all on the covers. Donation label on pastedown identifying this copy as being "From the Books and in Memory of Lillian Morgan Saminsky, American Poet and Novelist," with "'The Art of the Novel'--collection 72.36" written in ink above, and "Historical Society" and "Withdrawn" stamps below. Small library blindstamp on title page and another withdrawn stamp on copyright page, neither of which affect any text. Spine slightly dulled, front cover a bit mottled, otherwise about very good.         [Photo Album]: World War II and Baseball (Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park)

New York, Boston. 1939-1943. Oblong folio. Measuring 11.5" x 15". String tied black leather over papercovered boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 176 black and white photographs measuring between 3.25" x 3.25" and 4.5" x 3.5", without captions. A photo album kept by a man who served with the 181st Infantry in the years before and during World War II at Camp Edwards in Massachusetts, along with other locations, possibly in the South. The photos depict typical images of camp life: men shaving in tents, reading letters, and cleaning their clothes, as well as drilling, marching, and target practice. Two photos show an African-American soldier and his family as well as some of soldiers goofing off in costumes. Interspersed throughout the album are photographs of professional baseball games at Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park with images of Chicago Cubs pitcher Dizzy Dean and Cleveland Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau warming up, along with baseball comedian Al Schacht entertaining fans in costume with his oversized glove. Other photos show the crowds in the stands and studying programs, keeping score, and walking around the grounds. Eleven additional photos were taken at Yankee Stadium during the third game of the 1943 World Series, showing parades on the field, fans catching a ball hit into the stands, and the scoreboard showing the final score, Yankees 6, Cardinals 2. An interesting assemblage of photos depicting the American home front during the war years and one fan's enthusiasm for baseball. .

        Ask the Dust

Stackpole Sons, 1939 Stackpole Sons, New York:, 1939. Hardcover. First Edition. The extremely scarce first printing of Fante's magnum opus. Advance review copy with review slip and publisher's promotional material laid in. Book is Fine, tight, square and unread. The dust jacket is Very Good+, complete and quite bright on the front and rear panels, but sunned on the spine. An attractive example of this scarce first issue jacket, correctly priced at $2.00 and only mentioning Wait Until Spring, Bandini. Published by Stackpole Sons in 1939, which then became embroiled in a lawsuit with Adolf Hitler over the unauthorized printing of Mein Kampf. Stackpole Sons spent the publicity money for the novel on the lawsuit, muffling public recognition of this work for many years. It is estimated that fewer than 3,000 copies of the first printing were sold. Touted as the greatest novel ever written about Los Angeles by Charles Bukowski among others, it is a largely autobiographical account of a young Fante coming West. Bukowski also credited Fante with inspiring his own writing career. Additional photos available upon request. Fine. Very Good +. Comes in a custom-made collector's clamshell case with leather spine.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good.

        Navajo Woman with a Rug.

1939. 1939 - Painting on silk. Signed and dated lower left. 21.5 x 16.5 inches. From the biography by Michael Anderson: James Perry Wilson, known to his family and friends as Perry, was born on August 13th 1889 in Newark New Jersey. When James Perry Wilson was laid off from his architectural job in 1932, he went right to work at his passion, painting his favorite spots in Westchester and Monhegan. Of the 269 dated plein air paintings spanning from 1918 to 1974 that I have documented in private collections and in museums, 58 are from 1932-1934, the two year period before he began to work at the American Museum of Natural History. A mystery from this time is that Wilson took a class in 1932 at the Arts Student League with John Carlson. This is the only painting class to my knowledge ever taken by Wilson. He was 43 years old and had already been painting in his mature painting style for decades [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Happy Valley : A Novel

George C. Harrap & Co. Ltd., London 1939 - [328]p. Original tan cloth with blue lettering to the spine. The book has light spotting to the edges predominantly to the top edge and has a tiny dent to the rear board. Internally it is in excellent condition. The dustwrapper has a small closed tear to the top edge, has some darkened patches and an approximately four inch section has been excised from the front flap but as the images show is not price-clipped and overall is quite presentable. The first issue of White's first novel is scarce in any condition. White refused to allow the work to be reprinted in either hardback or paperback although somewhat inconsistently he allowed a French translation to be published. (Eden-Ville, Gallimard, 1951). He feared being sued by a Chinese-Australian family whose history he had drawn on for the work and was not fond of the novel himself. Only 2000 copies of this first issue were published. (Source Hubber/Smith, C1a). The novel received the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal and White remains the sole Australian to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.
