The Little Princess (Original screenplay for the 1939 film)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1939. Final script for the 1939 film (here under the slightly different working title, "A Little Princess"), based on three sources: the 1888 novel "Sara Crewe" by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the 1903 stage adaptation by Burnett of same, retitled, "A Little Princess," and a revised version of the novel that included added scenes from the play, titled "A Little Princess: Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe," published in 1905. Without question Shirley Temple's most timeless performance, complete with all the standard story elements Hollywood had worked to establish up to that point: orphaned at a young age (or is she?), an environment where the protagonist can become a hero (fancy girl's school), nasty female antagonist (headmistress Mary Nash), mystical seer (Cesar Romero), and last-minute, unexpected assistance from unlikely sources (Queen Victoria). Priceless from start to finish. Orange studio wrappers, stamped REVISED SHOOTING FINAL on the front wrapper and dated September 20, 1938. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters Ferris and Hill. 141 leaves, with an additional 25 pages of retakes and added scenes. Mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 9/12/38 and 12/1/38. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads.

The Life and Times of William Howard Taft

New York: Farrar & Rinehart 1939 - Two volumes (complete), 8vo., green cloth lettered in gilt; spines sunned. First edition, first printing. A presentation copy, inscribed: "For Phil Jessup, a partner in `Blackmailers' Inc.,' Sincerely, Henry F. Pringle," on the front endpaper. ---- Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice at The Hague and veteran U.S. diplomat, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," General Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year.         THE GRAPES OF WRATH

Viking Press, New York 1939 - A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Tight, clean page block with a bright yellow top-stain. Dust jacket without chips, tears or wear, a lovely copy overall.Steinbeck's classic account of the Dust Bowl and Depression era struggle of the Joad family, "The Grapes of Wrath" is a quintessential American classic. It would win both the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize committee would refer to it as Steinbeck's "epic chronicle" upon giving him the award in 1962. The book was the best selling novel of 1939 and became instantly controversial upon its release for its depiction of farmers and worker rights. Of course, "The Grapes of Wrath" was also adapted into the classic 1940 film, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda, which was one of the first films selected by The Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. "It is a very long novel, the longest that Steinbeck has written, and yet it reads as if it had been composed in a flash, ripped off the typewriter and delivered to the public as an ultimatum." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine in Fine dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Physogs The Novel Card Game

London: Waddy Productions, 1939. Combination card/parlor game consisting of four "frame" cards -- two male faces and two female faces from which a center square is cut. There are also 13 cards each for eyes, noses, and mouths, as well as 13 type cards, which match facial characteristics with personality types, or character. The appearance of this game coincided with interest in psychology and phrenology. During gameplay, players piece together facial features in order to arrive at that face's character type. Playing this game, we learn, for instance, that a determined person has narrow eyes with lids close together, a full, well-shaped nose, and medium-full lips that are compressed, firm, and down-turned. Two booklets are included: one with the rules and objectives of the game, and one showing the keys to matching character to the constructed faces. All of these elements are fitted into the original box. A reproduction of an advertisement notes that this game was invented by Jacques Penry, a psychologist who wrote several works on the subject of determining character from facial features. Apart from a little light fading to extremities of upper lid of the box, the game is in fine condition.

        Original concept art for Fantasia.

Burbank, CA: Walt Disney Productions, 24 August 1939 - In excellent condition. Watercolour over pencil on paper. Sheet size: 30.3 x 25.3 cm. Production label to verso. Mounted, and presented in a manufactured gold leaf frame with conservation glass. Original concept art for The Pastoral Symphony segment of Walt Disney's Fantasia (1940). It depicts a young faun picking grapes and is signed M. Schwartzman on the verso. Melvin Schwartzman (1914–2012), later known as Mel Shaw, joined Walt Disney Studios in 1937 and worked as a concept artist and designer on several productions, including Bambi (1942). However, he left the studio in 1941 to serve as a filmmaker with the U.S. Army Signal Corp. The post-war years saw Shaw starting a design business with Bob Allen, before returning to Disney in 1974, where he contributed to several of the major features of the modern era, including The Rescuers (1977), The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Beauty and the Beast (1991), and The Lion King (1994). "Mel Shaw's influence as an animation design artist extended over many decades and many studios. He worked with Hugh Harman and Rudy Ising in the early days of both the Warner Bros. and MGM cartoon studios. At the beginning of World War II, he contributed designs to Orson Welles's never-realized film of Saint-Exupery s The Little Prince. His best known artwork is the series of dramatic pastels in the title sequence of The Rescuers (1977), showing the bottle containing Penny's call for help riding stormy seas. Shaw said the drawings were originally just preliminary studies for an animated sequence, but when director Woolie Reitherman saw them, he said they didn't need to be animated – they could carry the sequence as they were" (Charles Solomon, Variety, 27 November 2012).

        Spiezer Bilder-Chronik 1485.

Russian Military Efforts in the World War].

Tovarishchestvo objedenennikh pisateley Parizh 1939 - Octavo, 2 vols. 211, [1] pp., 10 tables and maps; 242, [2] pp., 4 plans, second vol unopened, publisher's printed wrappers; covers slightly soiled. First expanded Russian edition of this important military research, which was first issued in English in 1931 under title "The Russian Army in the World War". Golovin (1875, Moscow — 1944, Paris), a Russian general and military historian, was a pioneer in undertaking a deep research of the war as a social phenomenon, which included analysis of the sociological and psychological aspects of the soldiers and the civilians. This study was the first full, and until the 1970s, the only comprehensive study of all aspects (manpower, supply, etc.) of the war effort available to the non-Russian reader. The influence of this book became evident in works such as Winston S. Churchill's account of operations on the Eastern front (1932). Robin D. S. Higham, Dennis E. Showalter "Researching World War One" (Greenwood Press, 2003). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Scotch and Soda" [with] untitled short story typescript

n.d. [Ca. late 30s], New York - 1 vols. 11 x 8-1/2 inches. Two Unpublished Short Story Typescripts by J. Blan Van Urk. J. Blan Van Urk, author of The Story of American Foxhunting and other sporting histories, as well as the children's book Little Charlie the Fox left, on his death, the typescripts of two short stories, offered here. The first is "Scotch and Soda", which bears his notation: "A satirical yarn about two cream-colored mules (based on fact). Should be illustrated with drawings showing these extraordinary animals in front of plow, foxhunting, playing polo, and jumping". Present are the original 15-page typescript and two carbons, one of which has been edited by the author with various corrections, deletions and additions. The second story, a ten-page carbon, is untitled; it is in the form of a letter home from one of a pair of young ladies who have come to New York to visit the 1939-40 World's Fair, and is replete with the names of the day--Gypsy Rose Lee, Groven Whalen, Thomas E. Dewey, and others, amid much amusing social satire. We have been unable to trace these stories, and believe they remain unpublished.

An American Exodus: a Record of Human Erosion.

New York: Reynal & Hitchcock,, 1939. Quarto. Original blue cloth, gilt lettered spine and front cover. With the dust jacket. Monochrome illustrations throughout after photographs by Lange. Price-clipped jacket with light creasing at head of front panel, light soiling to back panel, a few nicks, small plain mark on front cover of binding, light spotting to endpapers. An excellent copy. First edition, first printing, in the first issue jacket with Mein Kampf advertised on the back panel. This is one of the landmark photobooks to come out of America in the 1930s, and is listed in Roth's 101 seminal photographic books of the 20th century. "Of all the documentary photobooks stemming from the New Deal, and the Farm Security Administration in particular, An American Exodus by Dorothea Lange and her sociologist husband Paul Schuster Taylor is the most considered" (Parr & Badger). However, "despite excellent reviews, sales were disappointing. John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, published ten months earlier, had stolen the book's thunder. Indeed, "Steinbeck in Pictures" was the title of one review of An American Exodus. Actually, it was the reverse: Steinbeck's powerful text was, in effect, Dorothea Lange in words. Her photographs had inspired Steinbeck's novel and also the the film that followed. The movie... opened to critical and popular acclaim in January 1940, the same month that [the book] was released... Yet An American Exodus was influential" (Anne Whiston Spirn, Daring to Look: Dorothea Lange's Photographs & Reports from the Field, 2008, p. 38).
