Only 1000 copies were printed and no other edition was produced until the 1964 collected edition of Aiken's novels. SIGNED by the author to the front free end paper 'For Bobby and Margaret from Conrad, January 1939'. Robert Mackechnie [Bobby] and Margaret Mackechnie [nee Barnard] English painter friends of Conrad Aiken. Until the second world war Aiken lived in the Rye district, firstly at Lookout Cottage in Winchelsea, opposite the muddy creek from where the Mackechnie's lived on the Rye side, by February 1924 he had bought Jeake's House in Rye. By the way, Margaret Barnard's sister Alison Mary Barnard was a formidable Lady and networker. She lived at No. 4, Wimpole Mews, London and 'ran' The Centre of Spiritual and Psychological Studies. Here many Peace seeking authors, artists of very different plumage came together including Walter de la Mare, T. S. Eliot, Kathleen Raine, G. K. Chesterton [early on], Laurens van der Post and many more. No doubt Conrad Aiken too, who was a lifelong friend of T. S. Eliot, no outward publicity, quite the opposite of the extrovert Bloomsbury Bohemian hack hub. Dust wrapper supplied in archive acetate film protection, it does not adhere to the book or to the dust wrapper. We currently hold in stock 15 other books by this author.

        Maler und Graphiker, 1883-1970. Sammlung von rund 45 eigh. Briefen m. U., 2 eigh. Briefen, 1 Brief von fremder Hand m. U., 7 eigh. Karten m. U., 1 masch. Brief m. U. sowie 14 Umschlägen und 1 Telegramm.

Baden bei Wien, Hemmenhofen, Karlsruhe, Kampen, Sils-Maria und o. O., 1.X.-8.II.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        As I Lay Dying.

New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1939. First edition, first issue with dropped "I" on p. 11. and in the first state binding with lettering unbroken. One of 750 copies. Octavo, original cloth. Some rubbing to the front free endpaper, very good in the original dust jacket with some wear and light rubbing to the extremities. Faulkner had stated to have written As I Lay Dying in six weeks with no revisions, and its stream-of-consciousness style suggests such an immersive spontaneity. "I set out deliberately to write a tour-de-force. Before I ever put pen to paper and set down the first word I knew what the last word would be and almost where the last period would fall" (William Faulkner on As I Lay Dying).

London: Chatto & Windus 1939 - London: Chatto & Windus, 1939. One Volume Edition in dustjacket. Thick 8vo - 22.8cm. pp. [lxiv]; 585. 8 black-and-white plate illustrations and 4 maps including one fold-out. Publisher's blue cloth with black lettering on front cover and spine. A complete copy in excellent condition with its original unclipped dustjacket. Dustjacket shows very little wear and with very slight darkening to spine. Interior with no prior ownership markings, no foxing, folds or tears. An unusually well preserved copy in near fine condition. Scarce. ÑRosove 71-E4. This is only first hand account of Robert Falcon Scott's ultimately doomed second expedition to the South Pole on the Terra Nova. Cherry-Garrard was the assistant zoologist and one of the youngest members of the expedition at age 24. He was responsible for laying depots, and he accompanied the team that made the ultimately tragic attempt on the pole as far as the Beardmore glacier. This is one of the best and most fluently-written accounts of Scott's last expedition and a classic of Antarctic exploration, often described as the "finest polar book ever written" (Rosove).         Ask the Dust

NY: Stackpole. (1939). The second book in his semi-autobiographical "Bandini quartet," based on the author's life and experiences in Depression-era Los Angeles. Made into a film in 2006 by Robert Towne, who reportedly called it the best novel ever written about Los Angeles. The film starred Colin Farrell, Selma Hayek and Donald Sutherland. Inscribed by Fante in the year of publication to the collector (and bibliographer of Christopher Morley) Henry Tatnall Brown, Jr., "with the hope that he likes my book," and dated November 14, 1939, apparently at a promotional event for the book. Brown's bookplate front pastedown, slight offsetting from the bookplate; else a fine copy in a near fine, spine-sunned dust jacket with very light edge wear. A very nice copy of Fante's most famous and acclaimed book, seldom found with a notable association. First Edition. Hardcover.

Über den Prozess der Zivilisation. 2 vols.

Basel, Haus Zum Falken, 1939. 8vo. 2 volumes both uncut in the original printed wrappers. Very light wear to extremities and back-wrapper of volume 2 with a circular tear. Small embossed stamp to half-title of volume 1. A very fine and clean. XX, 327; VIII, 490, (1) pp.. First edition of Elias's landmark work in which he attempted to explain how Europeans came to think of themselves as more "civilized" than their forebears and neighboring societies, today regarded as being one of the most influential works in 20th century sociology and the first formal analysis and theory of civilization. The Civilizing Process is today regarded as the founding work of Figurational Sociology. In 1998 the International Sociological Association listed this work as the seventh most important sociological book of the 20th century."Elias examined the interplay among the rise of state monopolies of power, increasing levels of economic interconnectedness among people, and pressures to become attuned to others over greater distances that led to advances in identifying with others in the same society irrespective of social origins. Elias's analysis of the civilizing process was not confined, however, to explaining changing social bonds within separate societies. The investigation also focused on the division of Europe into sovereign states that were embroiled in struggles for power and security."         Rrose Selavy

1939. DUCHAMP, Marcel. Rrose Selavy. [16] pp. 8vo., 160 x 115 mm, bound in original printed publisher's wrappers, preserved in a new red cloth folding box. Paris: [G.L.M.], 1939. First Edition. One of 500 copies on vélin blanc from the limited edition of 515, published as the fourth part of the Biens Nouveaux collection edited by Henri Parisot. "Rrose Sélavy" was the name Duchamp used for his invented female persona, who flourished between 1920 and 1941. It is a pun sounding like "eros c'est la vie", which translates as "eros, that's life." It has also been read as "arroser la vie" ("to make a toast to life"). Some people think that the name Rrose Sélavy was inspired by Belle da Costa Greene, J. Pierpont Morgan's private librarian, later first director of the Morgan Library. Here, Rrose Selavy is the title for Duchamp's collection of puns, anagrams, sly double-entendres, and cryptic formulations, i.e., Modified Printed Ready-mades. A fine copy. Schwarz, The Complete Works of Marcel Duchamp No. 308., vol. 2, chp. XXII, no. 50; and vol. 1, pp. 214-215.

        Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor

London: Country Life, , 1939. Quarto. Original decorated paper boards with green cloth spine. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by Peake. Ownership inscription of front free endpaper. Jacket with some nicks, chips and closed-tears (some loss from spine), back panel toned and slightly stained, binding a little worn at tail of spine and partially split, partial offsetting to title page and final leaf of text, yet overall a good clean copy. First edition, first impression of the author's rare first book. "One of the first casualties of the blitz was Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor. The warehouse containing all available copies of the book was among the first to be bombed. Every copy was destroyed, cutting off Mervyn's income from that source and turning into rarities such copies as had already been sold" (John Watney, Mervyn Peake, p. 101). The exigencies of war precluded immediate reprinting and only in 1945 was the book reissued.
