ARCHIVE Of FOUR TLS LETTERS FROM RICHARD HALLIBURTON'S CHINESE JUNK "The SEA DRAGON"; November 1938 to February 1939. Two Photographic Images of the "Sea Dragon" included

(San Francisco) Shanghai / Macao / Hong Kong: The Trans-Pacific Chinese Junk Expedition, Inc, 1939. Letters are dated: Nov 20, 1938; Jan 18th, 1939; Jan 27th, 1939; and Feb 16th, 1939. Though typewritten and mimeographed, all four are personally signed by Halliburton. Letters typewritten to buff paper, envelopes with blue seal of the "Sea Dragon" with illustration printed to front. Modest wear to paper (some light age-toning and rubbing to papers). Envelopes rubbed and worn. Withal, a VG lot.. Pages within the letters: 5, 3, 4, 3 [Total of 16 typewritten pages]. Two black and white Kodak photographs are included, printed in 1957, presumably from a negative of Robert Pullen's famous shots of the "Sea Dragon", taken just before its doomed maiden voyage. Letters: 14" x 8-1/2". Photographs:. Who took the first aerial picture of Mount Everest after receiving express permission by stunning the Majarajah of Nepal with bi-plane aerobatics? Richard Halliburton was a legendary American travel writer and adventurer. Reading stories of his feats and antics seem surreal - after all, who flies an airplane upside down over the Taj Mahal? Halliburton was born in January of 1900 in Brownsville, Tennessee. Deciding at an early age not to settle down and grow old with a wife and family as the rest of his family and friends seemed to be doing. After graduating from Princeton, Halliburton traveled on as many adventures as possible and published his first novel, The Royal Road to Romance, in 1925 at the tender age of 25. His first novel became a bestseller, and was followed by more published adventures in 1927 and 1929. He enjoyed fame and adventures for a little over a decade, before deciding in 1938 that his next grand feat would be to cross the Pacific ocean from Hong Kong to the San Francisco International Exposition in a Chinese Junk ship, made expressly for his purposes. It is on this voyage that Halliburton and the entire crew of the Junk the "Sea Dragon" were lost at sea, having gotten caught in a typhoon. In 1945 a 150-foot ship outline with Chinese lettering washed ashore in California, this thought to possibly be some of the wreckage of the "Sea Dragon." Letter I: Halliburton describes the arrival in China and purpose of the expedition, as well as his interest in junks stemming from a 1 ft. scale model he sailed as a child. He explains that he chose to use a junk for his journey because of their stability, and notes that it is possible it will not be the smoothest ride. He quips: "If the junk should be small, the storms violent, and the voyage long - all the better. For if there is no hazard, no battle, where is the sport?" He introduces the "friends" of the expedition to his crew of Captain John Welch, Henry von Fehren, "Bru" Potter, among others. Halliburton also spends a significant amount of time discussing the war with China and Japan and the Japanese belief systems. Letter 2: The second letter discusses the search for an appropriate junk, and the ultimate decision to build their own that could be modified for the journey. Working with the man said to be the best ship-builder in Hong Kong (Mr. Fat Kau), and the appropriation of a few more crew members (a chef and a radio operator). Letter 3: The third letter, posted from Canton, desribes their taking the Sea Dragon out for a "shake down" cruise, with Mr. Fat Kau as his guest (who, though a builder of ships, had never sailed on one), and with high seas nearly everyone aboard became seasick. Halliburton notes the dry deck despite the high waves and believes he was right about the Sea Dragon's sea-worthiness. Much of the rest of the letter is spent discussing Canton, the disputes between the Chinese and Japanese, the destruction, the looters, and other conditions in the city. Letter 4: After setting out on their voyage, the Sea Dragon needed to return after only 2 days due to sickness on the boat. Though Halliburton seems only a trifle annoyed at the delay of their voyage, he is excited enough to try again, and leaves his readers with this: "In about another week we plan to leave again, to slip away as quietly as possible, and head east, once more around the southern tip of Formosa - and straight on to Midway. If all goes well, the next letter, the fifth, will carry an American stamp, for Midway Island is American. When this, the fourth letter, reaches you, we'll be a thousand miles along the way - I hope. Many thanks, again, for your interest and good will. Faithfully, Richard Halliburton"

        Ten Little Niggers

Collins, 1939. 1st edition. Hardcover. Original orange cloth in very good condition. Usually the spine and boards are badly faded, but on this copy there is only a little paling at the foot, over the publisher's logo, and a tiny patch at the crown, and down a narrow bit of the top front edge, so the cloth is in much better condition than is normally the case. The pages and endpapers are also extremely clean, with no foxing at all. In sum, a very nice copy of the first printing of Christie's best-selling mystery, whose title was altered for the American market to And Then There Were None, with the added bonus of the author's signature on a white card laid in.

THE D. A. DRAWS A CIRCLE (First Edition, Warmly Inscribed)

New York: William Morrow, 1939. Gardner, Erle Stanley. THE D. A. DRAWS A CIRCLE. New York: William Morrow, (1939). First Edition. A FINE copy in a NEAR FINE, bright and unfaded ORIGINAL (Priced $2.00) DUST JACKET (just lightly used). WARMLY INSCRIBED on the front-free endpaper: "To Tee/ who is so much a part of the gang -- with love from Erle." Underneath ESG has signed his name in full followed by Feb 1940 and underneath that "New Orleans." Tee Rose, a young writer from San Francisco, was a lifelong friend of ESG and she was always presented with Gardner's latest book -- usually immediately upon publication. We have in stock quite a few of his presentation copies to her dating from 1934 to the early 1960s. THE D. A. DRAWS A CIRCLE is the third of nine novels written by Gardner about small town California district attorney Doug Selby and fictional Madison City. Particularly nice cover art. As a sidebar, this is the only one of the many Tee Rose inscribed books we have in stock which has "New Orleans" as the location in which the book was signed. Logic seems to suggest he was there to research his 1942 novel OWLS DON'T BLINK which was set in the New Orleans French Quarter.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine.

        Heart's Desire.

Paris: printed for private circulation, [1939].. Superb copy of Buckland Wright's very rare erotic masterpiece - the artist's own copy with a variant signed plate. One of only 70 copies, this no.18. Title page engraving and 7 original copper engravings by Buckland Wright, all full page and cut loose in this copy with protective sheets, here Buckland Wright has substituted one of the for a different 'rejected; version. Printed in purple and black. Pp. 43. 8vo, original quarter maroon calf, marbled paper covered boards, spine lettered in gilt. A highly erotic lesbian tale which obviously inspired Buckland Wright. He is only named as JBW in the colophon. The book was produced by Sandford, who wrote it under a pseudonym, Dansdorf being an anagram, and published it in Paris for fear of prosecution. This copy has come from the family of the artist and was not meant for sale, although it is bound, as the prints are loose on purpose, having been carefully excised and each has a protective blank sheet. There is also a correction to the text on the final page in the artist's hand. The following plates are in this copy: 1) The frontispiece is as usual on the title page and is not cut out. 2) In the Great Hall 3) Two Girls 4) Three Girls in Manacles 5) Girls Rowing 6) The Feast - but in this case a different version signed by Buckland Wright and with his pencil note saying 'Rejected Plate' - loose. This plate differs almost completely from the version usually seen in the book. 7)Reclining Girl, hand over face 8) Girls amongst the Rocks

A four-volume bound set representing the last 82 issues of the publication of "La Petite Illustration," a weekly art supplement distributed with L'Illustration, a weekly Parisian newspaper. Serialized novels include: "Anne-Jeanne" by Gaston Rageot (#857-859); "L'Epaisseur d'un Cheveu (A Hair Divides)" by Claude Houghton (#873-875); "Marcus Fleurette" by Lucie Delame (#884-886); "La Double Escapade" by G. Contemporary pieces include "Le Peril Exterieur: L'Hitlerisme" (#895); "Le Peril Interieur: Le Communisme" (#897); and "La Defense Passive: Protection des Populations Civiles contre les Attaques Aeriennes" (#927).       London: Faber and Faber, 1939. Large octavo. Gilt cloth. Usual tan offset from free endsheets to facing pages, otherwise a fine, bright copy in dust jacket, and uncommon thus. Half morocco slipcase and chemise. First British edition, trade issue, published on the same day as the U.S. trade edition from Viking, and the limited edition bearing Faber and Viking's joint imprint. One of a total first printing of 3400 copies, of which 950 copies in sheets were destroyed. This copy was quite possibly utilized for review, as the formal publication date ('4 May 1939') is stamped on the front dust jacket flap. "If Finnegans Wake is a key book, it is a key which needs a key. The Wake reminds me of the unfinished obelisk which lies on its side at Assuan, yet it has passages of unearthly beauty (particularly the last page) and huge comic scenes" - Connolly.

Coward-McCann, Inc., [1939]., 1939. First edition. Amusing presentation inscription by the author on the verso of the front fly leaf. Small inked number to top edge of front fly leaf, else a fine copy in dust jacket with light professional restoration to spine ends and corners. The dust jacket has been designed by Clayton Rawson, the noted author of the Great Merlini mysteries. A very scarce mystery by Goldman, an early pulp writer, who opens this story with Rufus Reed's assignment to cover the electrocution of Dan Hillyard, a bank robber and murderer of a policeman. Along the way a noted criminal lawyer plays his first and last game of "Solitaire" with a mysterious deck of cards.

[Archive of One Hundred and Fifty Original Production and Publicity Still Photographs for:] OF MICE AND MEN

Los Angeles: United Artists, 1939. One hundred and fifty 7.5 x 9.5 inch (a few smaller) borderless black & white stills. Generally very good to near fine (a few corner creases, one or two with signs of oxidation). An unusually comprehensive archive, with trivial duplication, of the production and publicity stills for the 1939 film adaptation of Steinbeck's novel, directed by Lewis Milestone, starring Burgess Meredith, Lon Chaney Jr., et al. The still photographer for the film has generally been identified as Tom Evans. The collection offers unusually strong representation of the X, P, and H sequences, in many instances representing contiguous runs of images within the negative sequences. A considerable number of the stills bear the studio's mimeographed cut-lines affixed to the back, and a few bear rubber-stamped designations as "proof" prints. It would be difficult indeed to recreate such a near comprehensive collection of the stills associated with this film.
