München, Verlag Franz Eher Nachfolger, 1939. (noch zu Nr.21059:) - \". .

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        As I Lay Dying.

New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1939. First edition, first issue with dropped "I" on p. 11. and in the first state binding with lettering unbroken. One of 750 copies. Octavo, original cloth. Some rubbing to the front free endpaper, very good in the original dust jacket with some wear and light rubbing to the extremities. Faulkner had stated to have written As I Lay Dying in six weeks with no revisions, and its stream-of-consciousness style suggests such an immersive spontaneity. "I set out deliberately to write a tour-de-force. Before I ever put pen to paper and set down the first word I knew what the last word would be and almost where the last period would fall" (William Faulkner on As I Lay Dying).

London: Chatto & Windus 1939 - London: Chatto & Windus, 1939. One Volume Edition in dustjacket. Thick 8vo - 22.8cm. pp. [lxiv]; 585. 8 black-and-white plate illustrations and 4 maps including one fold-out. Publisher's blue cloth with black lettering on front cover and spine. A complete copy in excellent condition with its original unclipped dustjacket. Dustjacket shows very little wear and with very slight darkening to spine. Interior with no prior ownership markings, no foxing, folds or tears. An unusually well preserved copy in near fine condition. Scarce. ÑRosove 71-E4. This is only first hand account of Robert Falcon Scott's ultimately doomed second expedition to the South Pole on the Terra Nova. Cherry-Garrard was the assistant zoologist and one of the youngest members of the expedition at age 24. He was responsible for laying depots, and he accompanied the team that made the ultimately tragic attempt on the pole as far as the Beardmore glacier. This is one of the best and most fluently-written accounts of Scott's last expedition and a classic of Antarctic exploration, often described as the "finest polar book ever written" (Rosove).         Ask the Dust

NY: Stackpole. (1939). The second book in his semi-autobiographical "Bandini quartet," based on the author's life and experiences in Depression-era Los Angeles. Made into a film in 2006 by Robert Towne, who reportedly called it the best novel ever written about Los Angeles. The film starred Colin Farrell, Selma Hayek and Donald Sutherland. Inscribed by Fante in the year of publication to the collector (and bibliographer of Christopher Morley) Henry Tatnall Brown, Jr., "with the hope that he likes my book," and dated November 14, 1939, apparently at a promotional event for the book. Brown's bookplate front pastedown, slight offsetting from the bookplate; else a fine copy in a near fine, spine-sunned dust jacket with very light edge wear. A very nice copy of Fante's most famous and acclaimed book, seldom found with a notable association. First Edition. Hardcover.

Small embossed stamp to half-title of volume 1. A very fine and clean. XX, 327; VIII, 490, (1) pp.. First edition of Elias's landmark work in which he attempted to explain how Europeans came to think of themselves as more "civilized" than their forebears and neighboring societies, today regarded as being one of the most influential works in 20th century sociology and the first formal analysis and theory of civilization. The Civilizing Process is today regarded as the founding work of Figurational Sociology. In 1998 the International Sociological Association listed this work as the seventh most important sociological book of the 20th century."Elias examined the interplay among the rise of state monopolies of power, increasing levels of economic interconnectedness among people, and pressures to become attuned to others over greater distances that led to advances in identifying with others in the same society irrespective of social origins. Elias's analysis of the civilizing process was not confined, however, to explaining changing social bonds within separate societies. The investigation also focused on the division of Europe into sovereign states that were embroiled in struggles for power and security."       1939. DUCHAMP, Marcel. Rrose Selavy. [16] pp. 8vo., 160 x 115 mm, bound in original printed publisher's wrappers, preserved in a new red cloth folding box. Paris: [G.L.M.], 1939. First Edition. One of 500 copies on vélin blanc from the limited edition of 515, published as the fourth part of the Biens Nouveaux collection edited by Henri Parisot. "Rrose Sélavy" was the name Duchamp used for his invented female persona, who flourished between 1920 and 1941. It is a pun sounding like "eros c'est la vie", which translates as "eros, that's life." It has also been read as "arroser la vie" ("to make a toast to life"). Some people think that the name Rrose Sélavy was inspired by Belle da Costa Greene, J. Pierpont Morgan's private librarian, later first director of the Morgan Library. Here, Rrose Selavy is the title for Duchamp's collection of puns, anagrams, sly double-entendres, and cryptic formulations, i.e., Modified Printed Ready-mades. A fine copy.         Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor

London: Country Life, , 1939. Quarto. Original decorated paper boards with green cloth spine. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by Peake. Ownership inscription of front free endpaper. Jacket with some nicks, chips and closed-tears (some loss from spine), back panel toned and slightly stained, binding a little worn at tail of spine and partially split, partial offsetting to title page and final leaf of text, yet overall a good clean copy. First edition, first impression of the author's rare first book. "One of the first casualties of the blitz was Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor. The warehouse containing all available copies of the book was among the first to be bombed. Every copy was destroyed, cutting off Mervyn's income from that source and turning into rarities such copies as had already been sold" (John Watney, Mervyn Peake, p. 101). The exigencies of war precluded immediate reprinting and only in 1945 was the book reissued.

The Talmud Unmasked - The Secret Rabbinical Teachings Concerning Christians

E.N. Sanctuary, 1939, Paperback, Book Condition: Fair, Reprint. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall, 110 pages. "This is an accurate translation of Father Pranaitis' Latin text, and it is felt that it will be appreciated by those who are interested to know what this great scholar wrote on this important subject from original Talmudic sources. Father Pranaitis was one of those 'liquidated' by the Cheka during the Bolshevist revolution in Russia." - from Editor's Note. Author presaged his fate on pages 87-88 by explaining the existential danger of writing such a book. First published in Russia in 1892. Singerman (0032) reports a 94 page English printing, also in 1939. Unmarked contents tanned and somewhat brittled with age. Above-average wear and soiling to dull blue covers. Some page corners were folded. A worthy early copy.

The Local. Text by Maurice Gorham.

London Cassell & Co. Ltd 1939 - First edition, 8vo., 51 pp., frontispiece and fourteen full-page (one double) colour lithographs by Ardizzone, publisher's illustrated paper-covered boards printed in grey, black and crimson, slight age-toning, more so to endpapers, spine a little rubbed with some neat restoration (as is usual since this was a design weakness) but overall this is a bright, clean copy of a rare, early work. "Ardizonne's illustrations are generally concerned with contemporary life untouched by political, religious or ideological conflicts. His approach is not satiric or moralistic but autobiographical, and his drawings are representational and humourous and demonstrate his affection for people" (The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators) A very rare title to find in decent condition because the publisher's premises were bombed during the Blitz, destroying all the unsold copies, printing blocks, etc. A sequel was published in 1949 but due to post war austerity the illustrations are not in colour and in general it pales somewhat by comparison.         Prelude to Victory.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1939. Octavo. Original dark red cloth, gilt lettered spine, dark red top edge. Portrait frontispiece of Nivelle, 31 plates, 9 maps (5 folding). Jacket spine toned and a little creased and chipped at head, panels lightly soiled. An excellent copy. First edition, uncommon in the dust jacket. An important study of the Nivelle Offensive of 1917. "[Spears's] perfect knowledge of French and close association with the French Command, added to his own experience and powers of observation and reflection, have enabled him to tell the story in its fullness... a military and human study of the highest value and interest" (from Churchill's introduction). Cohen notes that Churchill wrote to Spears on 20 July 1939 expressing his enthusiastic reaction to the book: "I have just finished the book. I think it is a great work, and one of the finest I have read in the literature of War".

        Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Montgomery Ward, 1939. First edition, first printing of this beloved Christmas tale, written exclusively for Montgomery Ward by Robert L. May, with 41 illustrations by Denver Gillen. Small quarto, original pictorial wrappers, as issued. In very good condition with a tear to the front panel and small closed holes to the interior of the bottom text, not affecting the front panel. The story is written as a poem in the meter of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." Rudolph's first screen appearance came in 1944, in the form of a cartoon short produced by Max Fleischer for the Jam Handy Corporation, that was more faithful to May's original story than Marks' song (which had not then yet been written). It was reissued in 1948 with the song added.

Not in Grove Music Online."Firmly rooted in the French 19th-century tradition, Büsser';s symphonic and choral writing is indebted to Gounod and Saint-Saëns. He is best known, however, for his dramatic works, which betray Wagner's impact in both their form and their use of the orchestra. The influence of Debussy, whose advice Büsser sought over the opera that became his most successful, Colomba (c1902-10), is also evident in certain harmonic procedures and in an acute sensitivity to orchestral colour. The ballets, such as the light-hearted La ronde des saisons (1905) with its amusing descriptive touches, provide further evidence of his keen dramatic sense." Barbara L. Kelly in Grove Music Online.
