MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL (With First State jacket priced $1.50)

Houghton Mifflin Company 1939 - First Edition, First Printing, First State A nice condition book with the scarce first state dust jacket in near fine condition, not price clipped and showing the requisite price of $1.50 on the flap. First printing as shown with the date of 1939 to the title page and no other dates listed. The book is in great condition with oatmeal colored cloth boards with the picture of the steam shovel to the front. The book has no edgewear but to a tiny dot along one corner edge, slight toning to the light colored cloth. The binding is tight and square. The internal pages have light scattered pale smudges/light handling marks throughout, otherwise No writing, No bent pages and No foxing. Scripted owner name and date (1939) to front end paper. Please see images. The scarce original first edition, first state dust jacket has benefited from very slight restoration by an expert paper conservator and as such presents as a near fine example. The jacket has strong vibrant colors with no rips, no chips, no edgewear, no fading, and no rubbing. The first state jacket is identifiable by the requisite price of $1.50 on the inner flap, and the bearing the ad for Choo-Choo on the rear flap, and a yellow spine that just has the book title followed by an abbreviation for the publisher, ¿H.M. CO¿, with no mention of the author¿s name. Please note the price of $1.50 on the inner flap is fully necessary to determine the first state jacket, as even second state jackets have the same features except the price on the flap. A very scarce book in the rare near fine first state unclipped jacket. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.         The World I Breathe

New Directions (1939), Norfolk, Connecticut - An exceptionally clean, bright and pleasing copy of this scarce Dylan Thomas title. From an un-numbered limited edition of 700 copies only. Original dusty rose colored cloth with lettering in gilt on the spine. The jacket is complete and without blemish. It is covered in a glassine wrapper and then again in an acitate wrap. I have not come across documentation to indicate whether the glassine is possibly original. My guess is that it is not. This copy is warmly inscribed to the well respected American Poet Kenneth Rexroth: "Love for Kenneth from Dylan." Present on the front paste-down is Rexroth's book-plate and Rexroth's signature is just below Dylan's. Both interior hinges have been professionally strengthened and restored.         THE PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: THE COMEDIES, HISTORIES & TRAGEDIES: 37 volumes with

New York: Limited Editions Club, 1939-1940. Hardcover. Slight browning to the gutters of some volumes, contents bright and fresh. Spines foxed to varying degrees, some very much so. Overall an attractive set in at least Very Good condition. Arthur Rackham; Eric Gill; Robert Gibbings; Frans Masereel; Jean Charlot. Thirty-seven folio (8-3/4" x 13") volumes bound in gold-stamped half natural buckram, top edges gilt, with the paper sides, printed in four colors with the 2 matching poetry volumes. Edited by Herbert Farjeon, who created the Nonesuch edition text of Shakespeare, to restore the original typographic style and spelling; typography planned and production supervised by Bruce Rogers. Each of the 37 volumes is illustrated by one of the world's leading book artists including Arthur Rackham, Eric Gill, Robert Gibbings, Jean Charlot, and Frans Masereel. Media include wood engravings and lithographs with some hand coloring. An attempt to "produce a text such as Shakespeare himself might have passed for the printer had he personally read the proofs," and surely one of the most beautiful editions, if not the most beautiful edition, of Shakespeare ever produced. Each volume is copy #705 of 1950 copies issued unsigned. Included are the Commentaries for each play, never folded in this case. The covers reproduce a patterned wall painting uncovered under many layers of wallpaper in a room in an old house in Oxford that belonged to John Davenant where Shakespeare spent nights on his annual journey to Warwickshire. When one looks at the outside of one of these books, one probably sees the very design Shakespeare saw waking after a long night of talking and drinking with Davenant who was a vintner.

Typed letter signed. Princeton, New Jersey, 15. V. 1939.

1939. 4to. 2 pp. In English, to Dr. Frank Kingdon, President of the University of Newark, on his imprinted stationery: "This is to tell you how happy I am that you accepted the chairmanship of the American Committee for Moral Aid to the other Germany. The idea of contacting the German people directly with the help of such writers, artists, scientists, men of the church who were loved and trusted in pre-Hitler-Germany without ever having been political figures and without having therefore lost part of their prestige, as did all former party leaders, appealed to me from the very beginning. Let me tell you, however, that your acceptance, the certainty of your active participation is giving me a great deal of hope as for the success of our efforts. Letters of invitation to join our German Committee (of which I may serve as something like a Chairman, while my daughter Frik will be its Secretary) are being sent to the following friends and colleagues: Wilhelm Dieterle, Bruno Frank, Professor James Frank, Leonhardt Frank, Lotte Lehmann, Heinrich Mann, Dr. Hermann Rauschning, Ludwig Renn, Professor Max Reinhardt, Renen Schieckele, Professor Erwin Schrödinger, Professor Paul Tillich, Fritz von Unruh, Franz Wefel, Stefan Zweig. As for the American Committee I should wish to leave all decisions to your own judgement [sic]. I would, however, be very glad to discuss details with you as soon as possible. Could you arrange to come here in the near future? Realizing how busy you are I would, of course, be willing to meet you in New York, if this should be more convenient for you. Since, very much to my deep satisfaction, Mr. Paul Willert, President of Oxford University Press has agreed to be the American Committee s treasurer, it might be useful to invite him also to the meeting. All the more so, since, unfortunately, the financial question will be somehow in the foreground of our discussion. On the other hand, there can be no doubt that our chances to really accomplish important effects by what we are trying to do, are much greater than the financial risk involved. Erika is translating this letter for me and although I have full confidence in her ability of making herself understood, I beg your pardon, in case these lines are lacking some qualities of style and language. They are supposed to convey nothing more but my gratitude for your acceptance and my hopes to see you soon".

        The Yearling

Scribner's, 1939 (WYETH,N.C.)illus. THE YEARLING by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons 1939 (1939 A). 4to, bluish-green cloth, top edge gilt, Fine condition in publisher's blue slip case (case slightly rubbed on edges else sound and VG+) and in custom-made collector's slipcase. LIMITED TO ONLY 750 COPIES FOR SALE-SIGNED BY BOTH WYETH AND RAWLINGS. Two key facts have emerged about this edition. First, although 750 copies were printed, only 520 copies were actually bound and sent out with the binding, chemise and slip case of this version. The remaining 250 copies were bound in dark blue cloth with a darker blue slipcase and were distributed in the early 1950's. Secondly, according to letters from Rawlings to her editor, as the limited edition sheets were being printed she discovered that there was a line missing on page 196 (between lines 5 and 6). A new signature with the correction was inserted but not before some sheets were distributed. This copy has the uncorrected pages. Illustrated by Wyeth with pictorial endpapers, 14 full page color illustrations, title page decoration, plus 2 special charcoal and wash full page illustrations done for this limited edition. Also included is a facsimile of a 2 page letter by Wyeth discussing the book (not present in the trade edition). Wyeth reportedly traveled to Cross Creek, Rawlings' home, before beginning the artwork, in order to capture the essence of the area. Very scarce. Allen p. 216.. Signed by Author(s). Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/No Jacket.

The Medals [Signed by George Seferis -- Seferiádes, Georgios; Seferis, Giorgos -- to Rex Warner, with two drawings by Seferis]

New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc., 1939. First American edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first American edition, first printing (lower board corners bumped, spine ends gently pushed, mildly askew) in a Very Good + dust jacket (tiny and small chips to the dust jacket's edges, spine sunned, 1 1/4 inch tear starting at the front panel's top edge -- still a very good + example of this title's fragile and typically rather worn uncommon dust jacket), INSCRIBED, SIGNED, PLACED, and DECORATED BY GEORGE SEFERIS TO REX WARNER; a collection of 12 short stories by Luigi Pirandello, the famed Italian author of novels, short stories, and plays. Widely considered to be a forerunner to the "Theatre of the Absurd", Pirandello's dramatic works influenced the careers great Playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, Jean Genet, Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Fernando Arrabal, Edward Albee, and others. A literary genius of his day, Luigi Pirandello won the 1934 Noble Prize in Literature for his "bold and brilliant renovation of the drama and the stage". A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. GEORGE SEFERIS, INSCRIBED, SIGNED, PLACED, and DECORATED this book on the front free endpaper to his great friend, frequent translator, and fellow author Rex Warner (whose excellent translations of Seferis' works were a major factor in Seferis' winning the Prize) as follows: "Rex Warner [underscored] / Tiwpyos Efyipms [his Greek name using English letters] / Storrs Connecticut" under which SEFERIS HAS DRAWN TWO IMAGES ACCOMPANIED BY TWO PAGE NUMBERS. The pages referenced by Seferis are page 103, the first page of the story titled "Sicilian Honour" and page 155, the first page of the story titled "Sicilian Tangerines". Corresponding to the stories, the first of Seferis' drawings appears to be of a shield and the second appears to be of tangerine sections. Books signed by George Seferis are quite scarce and those by other authors signed and presented by Seferis are scarcer still. A Very Good copy of one Nobel Prize-winning author's copy of another Nobel Prize-winning author's work, SIGNED AND PLACED BY GEORGE SEFERIS WITH TWO ILLUSTRATIONS BY GEORGE SEFERIS RELATED TO THE BOOK'S CONTENT. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

THE PLAYS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: THE COMEDIES, HISTORIES & TRAGEDIES: 37 volumes with

Limited Editions Club 1939-1940, New York - Thirty-seven folio (8-3/4" x 13") volumes bound in gold-stamped half natural buckram, top edges gilt, with the paper sides, printed in four colors with the 2 matching poetry volumes. Slight browning to the gutters of some volumes, contents bright and fresh. Spines foxed to varying degrees, some very much so. Overall an attractive set in at least Very Good condition [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        MOSES MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN.

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1939. : , 1939. Hardcover first edition - Hurston's novel of Moses from an African-American folklore point of view - as the great 'Voodoo Man' of the Bible. In the first issue binding, finely woven reddish-brown cloth stamped in orange on the front boards and spine. Very good in a good only dust jacket (dampstaining to back cover of the dj, and affecting the rear board and spine of the book very slightly, chip missing at top of spine of dj, gift inscription dated in 1942. Despite these flaws, this is a straight and attractive copy of Hurston's rather hard to find last novel and the illustration on the front cover of the dj is striking. ) .

        THE GRAPES OF WRATH

The Viking Press (1939), New York - Second Printing Before Publication of this winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This copy belonged to screenwriter Jerry Cady (A WING AND A PRAYER; LAURA; FOREVER AMBER; CALL NORTHSIDE 777) to whom the author has INSCRIBED and SIGNED this book. According to Cady's daughter, the two got into a huge argument at Murphy's bar one night about the book and Cady said that this kind of thing didn't go on in America. Steinbeck then INSCRIBED the book on the dedication page "To Jerry Cady/As far as I know it, this is what happens to them/John Steinbeck." This book shows some evidence that it was carried to Murphy's on more than one occasion. The exterior shows minor edgewear, mostly at the bottom edge. The front endpaper is mostly pasted down to the front pastedown, but what can be seen shows the ink stamp of the Boulevard Circulating Library on Hollywood Blvd. The half-title page has a few small tears, and there is an old dampstain on the outer margin edge of the first few pages, including the dedication page, but not touching the Steinbeck inscription. Accompanying the book are a few pages of Cady's scrapbook that includes family photos and photos of his boat, his driver's license and Twentieth Century Fox ID card, and the 8 November 1948 headline of the LOS ANGELES EXPRESS: "Screen Writer Dies in Mystery." Cady died from an overdose of sleeping pills on his yacht off Catalina Island. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1945 for his screenplay for A WING AND A PRAYER. A beautiful Steinbeck presentation in a Good only copy [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

4 eigenh. Briefe mit U. Böhmisch Kamnitz und Dresden, 29. VI. - 18. XII. 1939, einer ohne Ort und Datum [wohl 1941].

1939. Zusammen (2+2+2+2=) 8 SS. auf 4 Bll. Gr.-4to. - Beilagen: Ein Neujahrskarte. Klischeedruck nach Tuschzeichnung. Rückseitig mit eigenhändigem Gruß. - Gut erhalten. Vgl. Löffer D 30.

        Step By Step

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1939. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is an exceptional copy of an important Churchill title. We find it increasingly difficult to locate copies of this quality. Churchill's last book published before the outbreak of the Second World War includes 82 newspaper articles focused on foreign affairs written by Churchill at the end of his "wilderness years" between March 1936 and May 1939. Many of them of course contain his warnings and predictions about Nazi Germany. Step By Step was published in June 1939. Only a few short months later, on September 1st 1939, Germany would invade Poland. Churchill would be invited to join the War Cabinet, reprising his First World War role as First Lord of the Admiralty. Less than a year after publication, in May 1940, Churchill would become Prime Minister. As a measure of Churchill's prescience and ultimate vindication, upon publication, Labour leader Clement Attlee, a political opponent who would replace Churchill as Prime Minister in late July 1945, wrote to Churchill, "It must be a melancholy satisfaction to you to see how right you were." Others were even more blunt. Sir Desmond Morton, military officer, government official, and appeasement opponent, wrote to Churchill, "Many years on, historians will read this and your speeches in Arms and the Covenant. They will wonder but I doubt they will decide what devil of pride, unbelief, selfishness or sheer madness possessed the English people that they did not rise as one man" and "call on you to lead them." Here is the British first edition, first printing, a truly fine copy in a near fine plus dust jacket, quite scarce thus. The green cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with bright spine gilt, sharp corners, and virtually no wear. The contents are immaculate with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. Faint differential toning to the endpapers confirms what the binding already tells us - that this copy has spent life jacketed. Even the page edges are notably clean apart from a hint of dust soiling to the top edge. The dust jacket for this edition was thin, making it particularly fragile, as well as light in color and highly susceptible to soiling. The dust jacket is unclipped and entirely complete, with no losses. We note only light overall soiling. The spine remains quite unusually bright; there is light soiling and trivial wrinkling to the spine ends that does not appreciably mitigate the overall excellent shelf presentation. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A111.1.a, Woods/ICS A45(a.1), Langworth p.197.

Eigenh. Briefentwurf. [Princeton, 18. XI. 1939].

1939. 2½ SS. auf 2 Bll. Gr.-4to. - Thomas Mann, Briefe 1937-1947, SS. 134/135.
