        Ask the Dust

NY: Stackpole. (1939). The second book in his semi-autobiographical "Bandini quartet," based on the author's life and experiences in Depression-era Los Angeles. Made into a film in 2006 by Robert Towne, who reportedly called it the best novel ever written about Los Angeles. The film starred Colin Farrell, Selma Hayek and Donald Sutherland. Inscribed by Fante in the year of publication to the collector (and bibliographer of Christopher Morley) Henry Tatnall Brown, Jr., "with the hope that he likes my book," and dated November 14, 1939, apparently at a promotional event for the book. Brown's bookplate front pastedown, slight offsetting from the bookplate; else a fine copy in a near fine, spine-sunned dust jacket with very light edge wear. A very nice copy of Fante's most famous and acclaimed book, seldom found with a notable association. First Edition. Hardcover.

Hitler's Mein Kampf. Illustrated by 200 Full page Plates. The Original Edition Entirely Unexpurgated. COMPLETE SET IN WEEKLY PARTS

Hutchinson in association with Hurst & Blackett,, [1939]. 18 parts, sm. 4to., First Edition thus, with very numerous photographs (many full-page) in the text; original pictorial wrappers printed in colours, wire-stitched as issued, wrappers lightly chafed at extremities as usual, backstrip of four volumes parted but entirely complete, some light age-soiling, the set now preserved in a custom-made black buckram solander case with gilt back. COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST UNEXPURGATED ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF HITLER'S INFAMOUS TREATISE. Translated by James Murphy, it is also the first fully illustrated version in English, with many photographs, illustrations, advertisements and examples of British war propaganda throughout. The printing style of covers varies due to production costs; parts 1-7 are printed in red, yellow and black; parts 8-18 in red and black only. The publisher's blurb on front covers is hardly understated: 'the blue-print of German imperialism'; 'the most widely discussed book of the modern world'. It is ironic that the next statement is 'Royalties on all sales will go the British Red Cross Society'. During publication purchasers could choose from five different binding cases: 'when this work is complete you will say 'what a fine edition!' No case is present here, but we have had the set preserved for the future in a handsome, specially commissioned black buckram solander case. COMPLETE SETS IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS ARE VERY SCARCE.

        The Hums of Pooh

E.P. Dutton & Co. Hardcover. B001B3O128 1939 reprint, inscribed A.A. Milne presentation copy, E.P. Dutton and Company (NY), 9 1/2 x 12 3/8 inches tall blue and green cloth hardbound, no dust jacket, 67 pp. Formerly held by Cyrenius H. Booth Library in Newton, Connecticut, with white lettering to spine, dust jacket blurb tipped to half title page, embossed stamp to title page and accession number stamp to first page of music as indications of this. Mild soiling and moderate to heavy rubbing and edgewear to covers. A few pages with light mostly marginal soiling, and one page with a small marginal bit of abrasion. Despite these detractions, on the blank page between the copyright page and A.A. Milne's introduction, Milne has penned (in his distinctive hand) a marvelous presentation inscription and six-line poem to Cicely Fraser-Simson, wife of his collaborator on the work, English composer Harold Fraser-Simson (1872 - 1944): 'Presented by H.F.S. and A.A.M. to Cicely Fraser-Simson - As Pooh is inspired by a hum or a whistle he / Hears in the tops of the trees, / As Eeyore is moved by the crunch of the thistle he / Pulls at his negligent ease. / So we were inspired by the hunny which Cicely / Brought to the singing of these.' Book is nicely preserved in a custom Brodart rare book box, made from archival-quality, acid and lignin-free, 20-point light tan folder stock with a 3% calcium carbonate buffer, securely held in place by Velcro buttons, with title page reproduced on front cover of box, title on the spine of the box and presentation inscription on the back of the box. ~WW~ Alan Alexander 'A. A.' Milne (1882 - 1956) was an English author best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and for various poems. Milne was a noted writer, primarily as a playwright, before the huge success of Pooh overshadowed all his previous work. Fraser-Simson, though also accomplished in musical theater, is today best remembered for this, the children's song cycle The Hums of Pooh, based on verses from Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner. This was included in Julian Slade's 1970 adaptation of Winnie-the-Pooh. . Fair. 1939.

        The Grapes of Wrath

New York: The Viking Press, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Like New. First edition, first printing, lacking the dust jacket. Fine. A would-be flawless copy, except for foxing to the edge of the page block, prelims and very faintly to the pages, and several tiny spots of wear to the cloth and page block. Oatmeal cloth and maroon stamping appear as virtually new, "Battle Hymn of the Republic" end-papers are very fresh, and show none of the offsetting typically found with this title. A classic in truly remarkable condition, exuding a great sense of what this book looked like on the day it was published in 1939. One would be hard-pressed to find a nicer copy.
