Der Erweiterungsbau der Reichskanzlei [Inauguration of the Reich Chancellery, Berlin, 9 January 1939)

Berlin: Not Stated, 1939. Card covers. Printed title to front, stapled binding. 29.5 × 21cm. Unpaginated, 16pp. German text. Full title: "Der Erweiterungsbau der Reichskanzlei. Einweihung am 9 Januar 1939. Bauherr Adolf Hitler Führer und Reichskanzler; Entwurf Architekt Professor Albert Speer, Generalbauinspektor für die Reichshauptstadt Berlin. Mitarbeiter: Otto Apel, Hanspeter Klinke, Albert Diefenbach, Hans Rußwurm, Gerhard Winter; Bauleitung Architekt Carl Piepenburg und Architekt Walter Kühnell". This is a scarce booklet on the inauguration of the new Reich Chancellery (Der Reichskanlei) in Berlin in 1939. The front cover has a general title, the first three pages are printed recto only, the first page has the same title and is dated 9 January 1939. The following page lists those of importance involved in the building: Bauherr Adolf Hitler (Fuhrer und Reichsknazler), Entwurf (architect) Albert Speer, fellow architects: Otto Apel, Hanspeter Klinke, Albert Diefenbach, Hans Rußwurm, Gerhard Winter, construction architects: Carl Piepenburg and Walter Kühnell. The next page is part of a speech by Adolf Hitelr in Munich in 1938, "Das Volk soll an der Entwicklung dieser Werke selber sehen...". This is followed by 8 pages of text printed recto and verso describing the building, with each section titled to the margin: 1. Fassade Voßstraße (Vosstrasse facade), 2.Gartenfassade (Garden facade), 3. Innenhof (Courtyard), 4. Vorhalle (Porch), 5. Die Mosaikhalle (Mosiac Hall), 6. Runder Raum (Round room), 7. Lange Halle (Long Hall), 8. Arbeitszimmer des Fuhrers (Fuhrer's Study), 9. Kabinett-Sitzungssaal (Cabinet meeting hall), 10. Empfangssaal des Fuhrers (Fuhrer's reception rooms), 11. Spiesesaal (Dining Room), 12. Bibliothek (Library). Finally, there is an architectural plan of the Chancellery. The last page has a single line stating Dr Lotz is responsible for the contents. This is an apparently scarce booklet which had a small print run with few survivors. The Chancellery was severely damaged during the Battle of Berlin in 1945, eventually being demolished by the occupying Russian forces. Condition: This copy is in good condition, but does have some wear. The whole booklet has been folded in half once, vertically, and this has left a fold that runs through the entire book. The covers are browned, mostly to the top edge, and with other areas of browning and light abrasion. The contents are clean bar some light tanning, and the binding is secure. A rare item.. First German Edition. Card Covers. Good.

On the Origin of Great Nebulae. WITH: Energy Production in Red Giants

American Institute of Physics, Lancaster and New York 1939 - RARE FIRST EDITION OFFPRINTS of Gamow and Teller's early papers on cosmology, including "a kind of blueprint" for Gamow's later theory of the Big Bang. In "On the Origin of Great Nebulae," "written jointly with Edward Teller, his friend and colleague at George Washington University, Gamow dealt for the first time explicitly with the Friedmann-Lemaitre equations. The two authors concluded that, 'our theory of nebular formation requires that the velocity of expansion remains nearly constant while the distances between nebulae increase by a factor of 600.' In the last section, they considered the cosmological consequences which they discussed from the form of the fundamental (Friedmann-Lemaitre) equation for the expanding universe as given by Richard Tolman in his important textbook of 1934? [and concluded]: 'Thus in order to understand the formation of great nebulae and to satisfy the condition of continuity at the moment of their separation, it is necessary to accept the hypothesis that space is infinite and ever expanding.' As they noted, this went against the conclusion that Edwin Hubble and Tolman had reached in 1935, namely that the universe must be closed and uncomfortably small. However, Gamow and Teller argued that the discrepancy might be resolved if it was admitted that the absolute luminosities of very distant (hence young) galaxies were higher than those nearer by. This idea was to play an important role in cosmology in the 1950s, but in 1939 it was merely a suggestion that lacked independent support. "Gamow's work with Teller of 1939 was based on the expanding universe but did not presuppose any explosive event in the past, what ten years later would be coined the big bang. All they had to say about the state of the universe before the separation of the nebulae about 1.8 billion years ago was, 'Before that time, space must have been uniformly populated by stars, or by gas molecules, if we suppose that the formation of stars took place after the separation of nebulae.' Although still in the pre-big-bang tradition, the paper was in several respects to serve as a kind of blueprint for Gamow's later contributions to cosmology" (Kox and Eisenstaedt, The Universe of General Relativity). In "Energy Production in Red Giants," published two weeks after "On the Origin of Great Nebulae," Gamow and Teller "carried out one of the earliest studies of the temperature dependence of thermonuclear reaction rates and applied their ideas to an investigation of energy production in red giant stars" (Libby and Bibber, Edward Teller Centennial Symposium). On the Origin of Great Nebulae. Offprint from: Physical Review, Vol. 55, April 1, 1939, pp. 654-657. Four pages, as issued without wrappers. Light edgewear, a little foxing. Energy Production in Red Giants. Offprint from: Physical Review, Vol 55, April 15, 1939. One page, as issued without wrappers. Small closed tear to margin, otherwise fine.         Quatre-vingt-neuf [Inscribed by Lefebvre; association copy R R Palmer] [The Coming of the French Revolution]

Paris: Maison du Livre Francais, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Lefebvre to historian R.R. Palmer, who translated the book into English under the title, The Coming of the French Revolution, which went on to become a best seller in the United States with one reviewer stating "M. Lefebvre's book is simply the best introduction to the study of the French Revolution available in English.". Palmer's ownership inscription is found on the ffep. This copy is heavily annotated by Palmer in pencil, including items that he wanted to discuss with Lefebvre, making it overwhelmingly likely that this is the copy that Palmer used in his famous translation. Per James Friguglietti's paper "R. R. Palmer and Georges Lefebvre: Their Collaboration and Friendship" all letters from Lefebvre prior to 1947 have been lost, potentially leaving this book as one of, if not the only, correspondence from Lefebvre to Palmer prior to the conclusion of World War II. Friguglietti also notes that a signed copy of Quatre-vingt-neuf was sent by Lefebvre to Palmer around 1940 -- this is almost certainly that copy. Scarce as the Vichy government suppressed the 1939 edition apparently leaving only 200 copies remaining (though Friguglietti disputes such a claim), but certainly a unique, and historically important copy, given the provenance.
