        Elbufergestaltung Hamburg. Architekt Konstanty Gutschow

1939. GUTSCHOW, Konstanty. Elbufergestaltung Hamburg. Architekt Konstanty Gutschow. 6 pp text leaves and 17 leaves with mounted photographs showing models, plans, and architectural details, together with an otherwise unknown large architectural map of the area from Gutschow's office. 4to., 310 x 280 mm, bound in contemporary brown half cloth, inner cover stamped: "Nur für den Dienstgebrauch" and "Der Reichsstatthalter in Hamburg Der Architekt des Elbufers" [Konstanty Gutschow]. Hamburg: Gustav Petermann, [ca. 1939]. |~||~||~||~| Konstanty Gutschow was a Nazi architect whose work came to the attention of both Speer and Hitler, who chose him to design one of his new cities (Führer-städte: Linz, Nürnberg, München, Berlin, Hamburg). A "Führerstadt" was a status which Hitler gave these five cities in 1937. This is one of the copies of Gutschow's architectural plans for a reconstruction of Hamburg in the spirit of Hitler and Speer that the Gutschow gave representatives of the Nazi Regime. Spine a little rubbed, some minor spotting overall a very good copy of a rare work. OCLC lists 2 copies in Hamburg, and what would appear to be an incomplete copy in the Ryerson Library.

A PROGRAM FOR THE JEWS AND HUMANITY; AN ANSWER TO ALL ANTI-SEMITES

New York: COMMITTEE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE JEWS. Hardcover. B0029Z5E1E 231, [1] pages. 9.2" x 6.3". Waton (1871-1959) was a Jewish philosopher keenly interested in the works of Marx and Spinoza. In the Foreword, dated 1939, he states "I convinced myself that human society is irresistibly and inevitably moving towards state capitalism and fascism. Further reflection also convinced me that this social transformation would inevitably bring upon the Jews great suffering. How could the Jews face this world situation? This question occupied my mind for the last twelve years. At last I reached the conclusion which I embodied in a program for the Jews. When the Jews declared war against Nazi Germany and fascism (in 1933), I saw that as a suicidal policy. Thus passed more than five years of ever-increasing suffering for the Jews. When the situation became so grave that the Jews themselves began to realize the gravity of the situation, the Spinoza Institute of America asked me to formulate my program." On page 199 he adds "We have to face the fact that the Leader of the German people has no doubt in his mind that the Jewish problem is the centre of all problems, not merely in Germany, but in the world. It is useless to dismiss this as an illusion, because if it is, it demands explanation. But it is no illusion." Brilliant gilt lettering upon front board. Light external wear. Binding tight. Patches of soiling on boards faintly visible if viewed from a certain angle. Occasional light pencil marginalia and underlining until page 21. Moderate age-toning to contents. It is left to readers to ponder the impact Waton's program could have had upon twentieth-century history. . Very Good. 1939. First Edition.

Energy Production in Stars (+) On Massive Neutron Cores (+) Neutron Stars and the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov Limit.

[Lancaster], American Institute of Physics, 1939. Royal8vo. Bound in contemporary full red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Entire volume of "The Physical Review", Volume 55, Second Series, January 1 - June 15, 1939. "Development Department" in small gilt lettering to lower part of spine. A very fine and clean copy. [Bethe:] Pp. 434-456. [Oppenheimer & Volkoff:] Pp. 374-381. [Entire volume: 1300 pp.]. First printing of "ENERGY PRODUCTION IN STARS", Hans Bethe's seminal Nobel Prize winning paper on neucleosynthesis. It was the first time an astrophysical subject was recognized by the Nobel Committee. Bethe's work on nuclear reactions led him to discover the reactions that supply the energy in stars. In this paper, Bethe shows that "the most important source of energy in ordinary stars is the reactions of carbon and nitrogen with protons" (Bethe, Energy Production in Stars). Bethe began by analyzing the different possibilities for reactions by which hydrogen is fused into helium. He showed two processes to be the sources of energy generation capable of keeping stars hot. The first, the proton-proton chain, is the dominant energy source in stars with masses up to about the mass of the Sun. The second, the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycle, is the most important in more massive stars. "ON MASSIVE NEUTRON CORES" and NEUTRON STARS AND THE TOLMAN-OPPENHEIMER-VOLKOV LIMIT, two landmark papers which "for the first time laid a general relativistic theory of stellar structure" (Pais, Subtle is the Lord), thereby proving Einstein wrong in his conclusion that no star could collapse indefinitely. In the paper they addressed the question that Landau's paper, and also Oppenheimer and Serber's, had failed to consider: what is the maximum mass for stable neutron-star? This paper applied Tolman's method to calculate the gravitational equilibrium of a neutron star and predict the conditions under which it will continue collapsing into a black hole (the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov Limit). The issue contain several other papers of interest: 1. Tolman, Richard. "Static Solutions of Einstein's Field Equations for Spheres of Fluid" - This paper developed a method for applying Einstein's field equations to static spheres of fluid in such a manner as to facilitate the development of exact solutions using known analytic functions); Jenkins and Segre's "Quadratic Zeeman Effect" and "Zeeman Effect of the Forbidden Lines of Potassium" .2. Gamow & Teller. "On the Origin of Great Nebulae". 3. Seaborg & Segre. "Nuclear Isomerism in Element 43" 4. Gentner & Segre. "Appendix on the Calibration of the Ionization Chamber". 5. Bethe. "On the Absence of Polarization in Electron Scattering" & "Meson Theory of Nuclear Forces."

        The Cosmological Eye

Norfolk: New Directions. (1939). Miller's first book to be published in the U.S., after the acclaim that his earlier books -- Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn and Black Spring -- had achieved in Paris. One of 2000 copies printed, this copy is a review copy (so stamped on the front flyleaf, with a publication date). Inscribed by Miller to Roger Richards, a legendary New York bookseller whose store, Greenwich Books, was a hangout for many of the Beat writers including Gregory Corso, Herbert Huncke, Ginsberg and Burroughs, and even Carl Solomon. Richards also published one of the last things Miller wrote, a 1978 chapbook called Love Between the Sexes, issued in an edition of 276 copies. This was one of the early books published by New Directions, which had been founded in 1936. Darkening to endpages and spine cloth, a very good copy of the first issue in a very good, first issue dust jacket with several small edge chips and two small contemporary reviews taped to the front flap. Very uncommon as an advance copy, and an excellent association copy. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Philadelphia: David McKay Company, 1939 - Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in black. With the dust jacket. Spine gently rolled, light spotting to top edge of text block. A very good copy in a slightly edge-chipped jacket with toning to spine panel and minor dampstaining to rear panel. Photographic portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, diagrams in the text. Revised edition of this examination of the chess prodigy's best games. Sergeant's book, based on Johann Jacob Lowenthal's 1860 work, was originally published in the UK in 1915.         Untitled illustration for "The Building of a Fairy City".

Kimberley, South Africa, 1939 - Original artwork in pen, ink and watercolour on paper. Image approximately 900 × 740 mm. Signed and dated William M. Timlin 1939 to the lower right. Framed. This magnificent illustration is probably a finished work for a book titled "The Building of a Fairy City" which was is in progress but never published before Timlin's death. His noted work The Ship that Sailed to Mars (1923) was in progress for two years and expanded until in its final form it had 48 pages of text and 48 colour plates, showing remarkable flights of fantasy, before being published by George Harrap, who decided not to typeset the text but reproduce the original calligraphy. Northumberland born, Timlin moved to Kimberley, South Africa in 1912 and designed a number of important buildings in Kimberley while pursuing his interest in art, turning out a large number of watercolour fantasies in addition to oils, pastels, etchings and periodical illustrations. His work was regularly exhibited. He also wrote stories and composed music. He died in 1943.

A PROGRAM FOR THE JEWS AND HUMANITY; AN ANSWER TO ALL ANTI-SEMITES

COMMITTEE FOR THE PRESERVATION OF THE JEWS, New York 1939 - B0029Z5E1E 231, [1] pages. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
