Quatre-vingt-neuf [Inscribed by Lefebvre; association copy R R Palmer] [The Coming of the French Revolution]

Paris: Maison du Livre Francais, 1939. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Lefebvre to historian R.R. Palmer, who translated the book into English under the title, The Coming of the French Revolution, which went on to become a best seller in the United States with one reviewer stating "M. Lefebvre's book is simply the best introduction to the study of the French Revolution available in English.". Palmer's ownership inscription is found on the ffep. This copy is heavily annotated by Palmer in pencil, including items that he wanted to discuss with Lefebvre, making it overwhelmingly likely that this is the copy that Palmer used in his famous translation. Per James Friguglietti's paper "R. R. Palmer and Georges Lefebvre: Their Collaboration and Friendship" all letters from Lefebvre prior to 1947 have been lost, potentially leaving this book as one of, if not the only, correspondence from Lefebvre to Palmer prior to the conclusion of World War II. Friguglietti also notes that a signed copy of Quatre-vingt-neuf was sent by Lefebvre to Palmer around 1940 -- this is almost certainly that copy. Scarce as the Vichy government suppressed the 1939 edition apparently leaving only 200 copies remaining (though Friguglietti disputes such a claim), but certainly a unique, and historically important copy, given the provenance.

THE GARDEN PARTY AND OTHER STORIES

London: [Printed at Officina Bodoni, Verona, for] The Verona Press, 1939. No. 459 of 1,200 copies. First Illustrated Edition. 260 x 184 mm. (10 1/4 x 7 1/4"). 5 p.l., 315, [3] pp. No. 459 of 1,200 copies. First Illustrated Edition. Publisher's attractive pale green and white patterned paper, flat spine with pink morocco title label. In a later marbled paper slipcase. With 16 color lithographs by Marie Laurencin. Front free endpaper with evidence of bookplate removal. Corners a little rubbed, a handful of light brown spots to endleaves, otherwise a fine copy, entirely clean and unworn. In an appealing edition designed by Hans Mardersteig and printed at the Officina Bodoni, this is a collection of short stories representing each phase of Mansfield's career. New Zealand-born modernist writer Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) moved to London, where she led a bohemian lifestyle, became friends with D. H. Lawrence and Virginia Woolf, found inspiration in Chekhov, Fauvism, and the work and person of Oscar Wilde, took lovers of both sexes, and revolutionized the way the short story was written in the English language by shedding plot and pat endings in favor of expansive impressionism, ambiguity, and the abstruse nature of interior life. "Risk, risk everything," she famously declared, in art and life. Painter, illustrator, and set designer Marie Laurencin (1883-1956) began her career as a porcelain painter in Sèvres, attended art school in Paris, and matriculated to the Humbert academy where she became acquainted with Georges Braque, and soon met Picasso and Apollinaire. She was drawn into their discussions of modern art theory but, aloof from conceptual schema, she approached her work with classical lyricicm in pastels and soft shades. She debuted in 1907 at the Salon des Indépendants, followed in 1912 by a large exhibition at Barbazanges', and at P. Rosenberg's gallery in 1920. Beginning in 1924, Laurencin worked as a set designer, creating stage designs for Diaghilev's "Ballets Russe" and, in 1928, the set for the "Comédie Francaise." She also illustrated books, such as André Gide's "La Tentative Amoureuse," Lewis Caroll's "Alice in Wonderland," and the present volume.         A.A. Milne sends a humorous letter to his close friend lamenting rejection by Punch Magazine

Sussex, England: , August 31, 1939. Sussex, England, August 31, 1939. 5.5" x 7.5". "One page ALS written extensively on both verso and recto, signed by A.A. Milne as ""Blue"" , his nickname given to him by his son Christopher Robin, and elsewhere in his letter as ""A.A. Milne"". Dated ""Aug 31st '39"" , 5.5"" x 7.5"" on stationary with letterhead of Cotchford Farm, Hartfield, Sussex. Expected center fold. Tiny faded stain dot. Near fine condition.A highly revealing letter with lots to sleuth about. Milne first compares some of his more boisterous articles to that of Stephen P. H Butler Leacock, ""Mr. Knox, he deliberately chose (or he told me the more ""boisterous"" - ie Leacockish - articles (burlesques and what not) as having been less reproduced than the others."" At the time, Stephen P. H Butler Leacock was the best known English speaking humorist in the world. Such period examples of Leacock's humor are:Many a man in love with a dimple makes the mistake of marrying the whole girl.Advertising may be described as the science of arresting the human intelligence long enough to get money from it.He flung himself from the room, flung himself upon his horse and rode madly off in all directions. So one can surmise from Milne's comment, that the chosen writing examples by Mr. Knox were using Milne's well known jocular humor. Further in the letter Milne also humorously laments that he sent an article to Punch magazine that was rejected by the editor who was unaware that the article was written by Milne. In his jocular accounting of this event Milne wrote :""But this will amuse you. In Punch this week is an article called The Organizer. I wrote it, at the persuasion of the family, it being exactly what happens here. Daff sent it up as by C.P. Brice from the address of a niece of mine, and it was rejected by return of post! I wrote to Knox , more in sorrow than in anger, to say that while I couldn't claim that anything I wrote was ""good enough for Punch"" it should be good enough for a few encouraging words from somebody, and that it was difficult for me to tell your writers that it was the work, and not the name which counted, if my own work was only accepted when signed""Milne's final travesty he describes in his letter was about land he was attempting to acquire in 1939 which was, unbeknownst to him, owned by Brian Thynne of Muntham Court, a family deeply trenched in UK history with the manor of Muntham dated back to the conquest. In Milne's letter he laments:""Here's another funny thing. I have been buying some land here which was said to be mortgaged to the Midland bank. Yesterday (after months of argument) my (illegible) sent the agreement drawn up as between A.A. Milne and --Brian Thynne of Muntham Court! WHY?""Brian Thynne, youngest son of Ulric Thynne, was the owner of the Victorian mansion, Muntham Court. Muntham had been home to several of the Thynne family, who were kinsmen to the Marquis of Bath. Brian became a well known aviator and from 1936 to 1939, Brian commanded 601 Squadron and in the latter year became a Fighter Command controller. He was made a CBE. After being demobbed from the RAF at the end of World War Two, his father gave him the sticky task of negotiating with the War Ministry for compensation for all the damage that had been inflicted by the military on Muntham Court during the war. It would appear that at this time Brian had placed Munthan on the market to sell (although it may have been parceled and split up) as Brian went off to live in Spain. However there is no record that Milne ever went through with the purchase. An incredibly intriguing letter spanning various unrelated events in Milne's life, none the less worthy of additional research!"

Das Politische Plakat. Eine psychologische Betrachtung

Munchen (Munich): Zentralverlag der NSDAP (The Nazi Party). Franz Eher Nachf., 1939. 2nd Edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8vo. 21.5 by 15.5 cm. 248 pp. Copiously illustrated in color. This work was allegedly commissioned by Hitler himself to serve as a handbook on how to design posters to serve most effectively as propaganda. To this end, Schockel analyzes at great depth the posters produced by the Entente powers in the First World War against Germany -- the posters of Britain, France, Russia and the United States. Schockel argues that the German defeat was not in small part because it lost the propaganda war, with its comparatively lame poster campaigns. Schockel also surveys briefly the entirety of poster history, before and after the First World War, with then an extensive discussion of Nazi poster art up to then. Schockel's arguments can be insightful and fascinating even when loathsome, and the posters shown are often visually compelling even when serving an invidious cause. This being a Nazi-sponsored work, there is the obligatory noxious derision of posters designed by Jewish artists, which is a muddling digression from the primary thrust of the analysis. Spine sunned. Light wear to cloth. Otherwise, a clean, tight copy, and very good or better.

J'entends bien que cet ouvrage n'a pas été conçu avec l'idée d'élever un monument littéraire, mais avec l'intention d'apporter un simple témoignage Je dis ce que j'ai vu, et rien que ce que j'ai vu.

        TEN LITTLE NIGGERS

London: Collins, [1939]., 1939. First edition. First edition. The true first edition that precedes the U. S. edition, published in 1940 using the title AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. Still later it was titled as TEN LITTLE INDIANS. Some minor foxing to the fore-edges, else near fine copy in dust jacket with light professional restoration to the spine ends, corners, and extremities. This is the first issue dust jacket with 7s./6d. at the bottom of the front dust jacket flap, and eleven listed book titles on the rear panel. An attractive copy of one of the author's finest works in which visitors to an island are picked off one by one as the layers of criminal obfuscation increase. A Catalogue of Crime 750 says, "A Tour de force on the following trapeze: invitations go out to a group of people, all of whom have been responsible for the death of someone by negligence or intent. The island on which the party is gathered is owned by the would-be avenger of all those deaths. The events and the tension produced by the gradual polishing off of the undetected culprits are beautifully done. One improbability, well hidden, makes the whole thing plausible." Adey's Locked Room Murders 442 says "Death by various means of ten people ... out of ten ... on an isolated island." The basis for no fewer than four film adaptations, the first of which is in-arguably the definitive version was produced in 1945, and starred Barry Sullivan, Walter Houston, Judith Anderson, and Louis Hayward, a 1965 adaptation starred Hugh O'Brian, Shirley Eaton, Fabian, and Stanley Holloway, a 1974 version starred Richard Attenborough, Charles Aznavour, and Oliver Reed, and a 1989 version starred Donald Pleasence and Brenda Vaccaro. An exceptional copy of a cornerstone of crime fiction.
