        Changing New York

1939 - ABBOTT, Berenice. Changing New York. New York: E.P. Dutton, 1939. Quarto, original blue cloth, original photographic dust jacket. $9000.First edition of Abbott's landmark photo-essay on New York City, inscribed by Abbott, "For J"" and E"" with warmest regards Berenice Abbott Blanchard Maine August '67," featuring 97 brilliant halftone plates that display "the historical importance of the documentary mode". its power as a medium of personal expression" (Parr & Badger). After spending the better part of the Twenties in Paris photographing such literary celebrities as James Joyce, Jean Cocteau and Andre Gide, Abbott returned to New York with the intention "to do in Manhattan what Atget did in Paris." Abbott captured the city "with a straightforward style that nodded toward 19th-century classicism while signaling a new sort of stripped-down modernism" (Roth, 100). "Changing New York not only fulfills Abbott's criterion for the historical importance of the documentary mode, but also demonstrates its power as a medium of personal expression" (Parr & Badger I:141), providing "a distinctive interpretation of New York as well as a priceless document thereof" (Icons of Photography, 104). "First Edition" stated on copyright page; first issue with blue topstain. Text by Elizabeth McCausland. With dust jacked based on a design by Abbott that shows her name superimposed on a brick wall from her photograph, "Construction Old and New": "one of three images that had been removed from the book just before publication" (Bonnie Yochelson). Open Book, 130. Images fine, faint foxing to preliminaries, lightest edge-wear to cloth, expert restoration to scarce dust jacket. An extremely good inscribed copy.         Two Original Gelatin Silver Prints, late 1930s, of George Washington Carver standing next to one of his paintings of yucca plants, two different views, one of which is signed by Dr. Carver and photographer (P.H. Polk).

Tuskegee, AL 1939 - (one is undated but appears to be the same year as the other) 5.5 x 3.5, and 6.5 x 4.5. Smaller photo has light creasing, clear plastic photo "corners," a light foxing on reverse, notes on the back "$1.50 per dozen" (green ink) and "3/4.50 Art lecture given by Dr. Carver during summer school at Tuskegee Institute July 1942," number probably refer to the cost of the photos; larger photo has light creasing, clear plastic photo corners, one corner of photo has an abrasion, back of photo has paper strips along sides with a few abrasions, ink note on reverse Dr. Carver giving an art lecture and discussing the (word abraded) of Yucca (word abraded) that was (word abraded) more than 20 years prior to the opening of the Carver Museum. Both images show a large framed painting of yuccas resting on an easel on a small cloth-covered platform; both are identical paintings. The smaller photo shows Dr. Carver to the right of the painting, right hand touching the frame and left hand holding a pointer, gazing directly at the photographer; the slightly larger photo shows him to the left of the painting and using the pointer, facing the canvas; only one photo is dated but appears to be from the same lecture. The smaller print is signed in the lower left corner in black ink "Geo. W. Carver. 12- 25-39" and near the lower right ":Polk: ’39." Prentice Herman Polk became the photography instructor at Tuskegee Institute in 1928 and quickly became head of the department, in 1939 he became the official photographer of the Tuskegee Institute. He photographed famous visitors to Tuskegee such as Henry Ford, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, W.C. Handy but one of his favorite subjects was Dr. Carver. Both photographs appear to be from the same lecture so it is quite likely that both were taken by Polk. COMES WITH: later glossy b&w reprint of Dr. Carver sitting at an easel working on painting of flowers in a vase, original photo was probably taken in the late 1930s, 10 x 8 unevenly cropped, small piece out of side margin, glue stains on back with printed note "Dr. George Washington Carver painting a Yucca Plant" but that is not the flower shown. A total of three pieces. ONE PHOTO SIGNED BY GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER AND POLK. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Finnegans Wake.

Faber and Faber, London 1939 - 628 S. Orig.-Leinenband. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Riacho Doce, romance.

Rio de Janeiro, Livr. José Olympio, 1939. - 8°, original printed wrappers (by Santa Rosa), slightly worn at extremities. Occasional minor foxing. Overall very good. Inscribed by Lins do Rego to the Portuguese modernist poet Alberto de Serpa on the half-title. 372 pp., (1 l.). *** FIRST EDITION. José Lins do Rego Cavalcanti is one of the most important twentieth-century Brazilian authors, ranking with Machado de Assis, Jorge Amado and Graciliano Ramos. He and Amado were the leading exponents of the "Northeastern novel," and in the hands of Lins do Rego "it becomes a true social novel of a superior kind, with implications far broader than its provincial setting might seem to promise" (Putnam). His theme was the disintegration of the aristocratic-patriarchal society of the plantations when confronted with urban and industrial civilization. He has often been compared with Thomas Hardy. Lins do Rego (1901-1957) was born on a plantation near Pilar (Paraiba).@Provenance: Alberto de Serpa Esteves de Oliveira (1906-1992), poet, dramatist, essayist and book collector, attended the University of Coimbra for 3 years but was more interested in collaborating with the writers of @Presença than in studying. He published his first novel, @Saudade do mar, at age 17, and 2 collections of poetry (@Quadras and @Evoé), but it was 2 later collections, @Varanda, 1934 and @Vinte poemas da noite, 1935, that led to his unanimous recognition by critics as an important modern poet. Casais Monteiro says that Serpa, along with Branquinho da Fonseca, Carlos Queirós and Francisco Bugalho, give us "um novo aspecto do abandono egoísta a um eu inadaptado à acção . [Serpa] tem, na poesia, não uma via de contacto com a realidade, mas, por assim dizer, um instrumento a cuja musica embala a sua dolorosa impressão de diferença e de incompatibilidade" (p. 239).After his years in Coimbra, Serpa returned to his native Porto and became an insurance broker. He was imprisoned for political reasons in 1936, and at the same period became once again a fervent Catholic. Throughout his life he contributed to Portuguese literary reviews, including @A Aguia, @Aventura, @Cadernos de poesia, @Cavalo de todas as cores (co-editor), @Diálogo, @Momento, @Presença (editor of the second series, 1939-40), @Quatro ventos and @Tríptico.*** Menezes, @Dicionário literário brasileiro pp. 567-68.         THE CHINABERRY TREE.

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1939. : , 1939. Hardcover - The third novel by this important Harlem Renaissance writer, originally published in 1931. Introduction by Zona Gale. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. The orange cloth covers are very bright, with just a little shelfwear on the lower edges. Minor foxing to the margins of a few pages. The scarce dustjacket is price-clipped with light edgewear and some chipping at the folds, but is overall quite attractive. Contemporary reviews of 'Plum Bun' on the back cover - including comments from Countee Cullen and W.E.B. DuBois. All of Fauset's novels are hard to find in any early hardcover edition, and copies in dustjacket are even more elusive. .
