        Moses, Man on the Mountain.

      J. B. Lippincott Company, New York 1939 - First edition of this classic retelling of Moses' exodus. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Louise Elder - one of God's pretty throne-angels with shiny Wings. Sincerely, Zora Neale Hurston." Light rubbing, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed by Zora Neale Hurston. In this 1939 novel based on the familiar story of the Exodus, Zora Neale Hurston blends the Moses of the Old Testament with the Moses of black folklore and song to create a compelling allegory of power, redemption, and faith. Narrated in a mixture of biblical rhetoric, black dialect, and colloquial English, Hurston traces Moses's life from the day he is launched into the Nile river in a reed basket, to his development as a great magician, to his transformation into the heroic rebel leader, the Great Emancipator. From his dramatic confrontations with Pharaoh to his fragile negotiations with the wary Hebrews, this very human story is told with great humor, passion, and psychological insight. Hailed by The New York Times as, "a narrative of great power. Warm with friendly personality and pulsating with.profound eloquence and religious fervor."         Heart's Desire

Paris: (Golden Cockerel Press), 1939. Buckland Wright, John. Octavo. 43pp., + (7)ff. One of 70 copies printed for private circulation at the Tintern Press under the direction of Christopher Sandford of the Golden Cockerel Press. According to Reid, this is one of thirty copies bound in vellum-backed cloth boards. With a title-page illustration and seven erotic copper engravings by John Buckland Wright. The book was written by Sandford under a pseudonym due to its erotic content. Accompanying this copy is a set of proofs before letters of all eight engravings, housed in a contemporary quarter morocco folding case. Although Reid notes two special copies containing extra material, and our own experience confirms that other copies were issued with proofs and additional material, it is not inconsistent that these extra proofs may have been offered with this copy. Slight fading along fore-edge of upper cover of book, minor sunning to spine of folding case, otherwise fine. (Reid A30c).

The Road is Wider than Long. An Image Diary from the Balkans July-August 1938

London Gallery Editions, 1939. First edition. Penrose, Roland; Bellmer, Hans. Illustrated from photographs by the author, printed in red and black, using various decorative type faces, at The Bradley Press. One of 500 numbered copies. 8- 1/2 x 6-7/8 inches, 52 pages. Published as No. 1 in the Series of Surrealist Poetry, edited by E.L.T. Mesens. Inscribed by Penrose to the author and war correspondent John Langdon-Davies. Langdon-Davies commanded the Osterley Home Guard Training School in 1940 where Penrose taught camouflage (famously using a photo of his wife Lee Miller wearing only a camouflage net). Bound by Peter Jones, using multiple strips of quarter-sawn oak from Penrose's Farley Farm, a gift to the binder from Anthony Penrose, the author's son, with single strip of yew in each board. The strips were butt-jointed and threaded into carbon fiber rods. Throughlays of sanded acrylic inserts with gold leaf, quarter jointed black goatskin spine, the original wood veneer covers designed by Hans Bellmer are preserved, and incorporated in the binding, which has a lidded box made of the same oak, tongued and grooved with rebate corner joints. Jones has been President of Designer Bookbinders. His works are owned by major collectors and institutions in the USA and the UK. He is a member of the Tomorrow's Past group of binders who make modern conservation bindings for antiquarian books, avoiding the historicist pastiches of restoration bindings.

A complete, unbound set of sheets for one of the most ambitious productions of the press, limited to one hundred and fifty copies, printed in handset Lutetia type on Cromwell handmade gray paper, with decorative initials drawn by Bruce Rogers. The text was based on that established by Kittredge. The press offered copies for sale, though many were given as gifts by the proprietor.       Soviet Aviation, Layout Alexander Rodchenko und Varvara Stepanova, State Art Publishers, Moscow - Leningrad, 1939, Kunstleder/Hardcover, Kupfertiefdruck, 39,5 x 26,5 cm, 96 Seiten, Text Englisch.

Ozoplaning with the Wizard of Oz

Reilly & Lee, Chicago 1939 - First edition, first issue. Quarto. Illustrated by Jno. R. Neill. Very small spots of sunning at the spine ends, else fine in an attractive, very good plus first state dustwrapper with slight chipping at the crown, and some faint fading on the spine. After L. Frank Baum's death the Oz stories were continued by license from the Baum family. Because they were reprinted so many times, determining the first edition of these titles requires either a team of Talmudically trained bibliomaniacs, or patience and the excellent Hanff and Greene bibliography. We employee the latter. An attractive copy, and very scarce in jacket. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Day of the Locust

1939. First Edition . WEST, Nathanael. The Day of the Locust. New York: Random House, (1939). Octavo, original red cloth, orange paper spine label, original dust jacket. $7800.First edition of WestÂ’s masterpiece, his brilliant final novel, named one of the 100 best novels of the century by the Modern Library, especially scarce in colorful, unrestored dust jacket.A Hollywood screenwriter during the 1930s, Nathanael West was ""fascinated by the underbelly of Los Angeles"" and used his experiences to compose what many consider the definitive Hollywood novel (New York Times). ""West's The Day of the Locust remains the best of the hundreds of Hollywood novels writtenÂ… F. Scott Fitzgerald, who was himself working on The Last Tycoon, said that novel had 'scenes of extraordinary power'"" (ANB). On its publication, Dorothy Parker called the novel ""brilliant, savage and arresting,"" and The New York Times praised it as an astounding and ""effective grotesqueÂ… a nightmare of lust and violence."" ""An unusual and highly original talent, West was one of the first and best American writers of black comedyÂ… Miss Lonelyhearts and The Day of the Locust are his most compelling and effective works"" (Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia, 1056-57). Published in May 1939, the book sold less than 1500 copies. West died in a car crash in 1940 at the age of 37 and never lived to see the novel's eventual critical acclaim. With ""First Printing"" on copyright page. Interior fine, one small spot of soiling to rear board. Light wear to extremities of bright, unrestored dust jacket with small spot of soiling to rear panel, rubbing to front panel. A near-fine copy, most scarce in unrestored dust jacket.
