Lithography (folds with old repaired tears with old brown paper, holes with tiny loss of image in marrins and in the folds, old colour annotations on the map) 66 x 66 cm (26 x 26 inches). Poznan: Chojnacki 1938. A separately published city and transportation map of Pozna? in Poland, with letters in art deco style, was printed a year before WWII. - A rare separately published map of Poznan was printed in 1938, on the eve of WWII. Marked are all the streets, as well as 11 tram and 4 bus lines. The map was made by the Association of Christian Paper Merchants of the Greater Poland Voivodeship in Poznan. Old annotations in colour pencils mark connections between churches in the centre and different private houses. The map was made only months before the beginning of WWII. Between 1939 and 1945 Poznan was under the German occupation, under which many inhabitants, especially Jewish ones, were moved or murderer. The war left much of the city in ruins. Du Maurier, Daphne
Rebecca is a suspenseful novel that opens with the iconic line, "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again," which immediately establishes the dreamlike, haunting quality of both the novel and its main setting. The plot is narrated by the second Mrs. de Winters, the new wife of wealthy widower Maxim De Winters who used to live at his country estate Manderley with his first wife, Rebecca. Throughout the novel, the narrator is tormented by Rebecca's former nursemaid, the sinister Mrs. Danvers, who glorifies her former mistress and attempts to break up the newlywed de Winters. However, "To suggest the story in brief compass is impossible. The reader must experience the atmosphere of impending disaster, the exquisite love story with its emotion heightened by drama, the surprises, the superb moment of melodrama." Rebecca, du Maurier's most famous novel, was adapted into the notable 1940 film by Alfred Hitchcock, whose signature style also hinged on a suspenseful development that outshone the plot itself. Rebecca became one of du Maurier's most successful works. It was a major hit on publication, went on to sell nearly 3 million copies between 1938 and 1965 and has never gone out of print. The novel is perhaps best remembered for sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers, the fictional Cornish estate of Manderley (based on Du Maurier's own home), and its classic opening line: "LAST NIGHT I dreamt I went to Manderley again".

YEE, Chiang
London, Methuen, [1938]. Small 4to. Original cloth with dust-wrapper (price-clipped); pp. xiv, [2], 230, frontispiece and numerous text illustrations; wrapper a little frayed, spine darkened and with a few spots, otherwise very good; provenance: gift inscription, dated 1943 on front fly-leaf. Very rare first edition of one of the earliest and best informed books on the subject in the English language, written by a practitioner of the art. 'To summarize: In China, anything which can claim to be a work of art has some connexion, obvious or subtle, with calligraphy' (p. 220). The 'Chinese artist and writer Chiang Yee (1903-1977) came to Britain in 1933, where he lived and worked until 1955. During this time he wrote a successful series of illustrated travelogues using the pen name 'Yaxingzhe' or 'Silent Traveller'. The books describe Chiang Yee's life in London and Oxford during the turbulent years of the Second World War and record his travels to the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, Edinburgh and Dublin. Illustrated throughout, with his own unique ink and watercolour paintings, sketches and poems, they represent a significant artistic, as well as literary project. Notably among the first Chinese writers to write books in English in the first half of the 20th century, Chiang enjoyed a prolific publishing career in Britain, in which he also published two seminal texts on Chinese painting and calligraphy, memoirs of his childhood in China, and several children's books' (V&A Online Journal Issue No. 4 Summer 2012). The book was reprinted several times and in 1986, translated i … [Click Below for Full Description]

(CORVINUS PRESS.) TILLERY, John.
[London:] Corvinus Press,, 1938. With his fellow sufferers thro' Syria and Egypt while prisoners with Gen. Bonaparte, 1799. Octavo. Original white-cloth-backed buff paper boards hand-printed with pine-sprig and star motifs, spine lettered in gilt, dove vignette gilt to backstrip on front board, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, printed throughout on Silverflake paper. Mild toning to spine ends, top edges of both boards a little rubbed, upper outer corners slightly bumped, very mild soiling to front pastedown. An excellent copy. First and only edition, limited to 40 copies for personal distribution by Viscount Carlow, founder of the Corvinus Press, as a Christmas gift, this copy inscribed on the presentation leaf "For Eileen, from Carlow, 1938". The text was printed verbatim from the original manuscript, which is now in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. It is today inevitably uncommon, with three copies appearing at auction, the last in 1994, and 12 now confined to libraries. "John Tillery, an American sailor, served on board [HMS] Tigre under Sir Sidney Smith … Tillery and 18 shipmates were captured by the French at Acre on 21 March 1799. Initially they were well treated — Napoleon even sent them a bottle of Jew's Brandy and a share of his provisions. Tillery was interrogated by Napoleon himself and asked to identify the body of a dead marine. However, after Napoleon's failure at Acre, the prisoners were marched to Egypt and kept in appalling conditions … The prisoners were released on 22 December and returned to England on board HMS Theseus".
