John Wisden
1938. Hi, We recently purchased the Wisdens from the Bolton Library and were pleasently surprised by their condition, they are Ex-Library and have stamps etc to them but they are priced very low so a great way to buy a cheap hardback that may be better than you think. This lot is a 1938 Original Hardback Wisden in Good+ Condition, Please note pages 145-152 and 393/4 are missing. Otherwise this Wisden is a very good book for an ex library. The boards are a touch dark but the hinges are very good. Photoplate is excellent. The gilt to the spine is AMAZING for a 1938. Red sticker to spine. The library factor are : Stamps to a few pages, stamp to page block and a white square fixed to the last page and stamp. Not too bad. Rock bottom price due to missing page. (Stated on first page). Rated a 6 as pages missing else it would be an 8.

Dadaismus, Futurismus und Surrealismus - Marko Ristic
1938. 40 S., 2 Bll. Mit Illustrationen von Krsto Hegedusic. + Beizettel. 4°, grüne Orig.-Broschur. Originalausgabe. - Selten. [Click Below for Full Description]

Kafka, Franz
London: Rutledge, 1938. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. 1st edition in English (the 1st U. S. edition was 1940). Publisher's reply card laid in (maybe some kind of review copy, but probably not). Fine in a dustjacket with faint fox spots to the spine otherwise the jacket is also fine. Kafka was a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, and he died at 41, so like everyone who dies young, he is remembered as vital, intense and filled with potential, a figure made of promise, legends, myths, and memories, not facts. This is the earliest written, but the last published, of the 3 tragicomic novels (with The Castle and The Trial) in his trilogy of loneliness. He began it in 1912 and originally called it The Man Who Disappeared, or by the title of its first chapter, The Stoker, but he regularly referred to it as his American novel, so when it was posthumously published, his executor (Max Brod) titled it America. It is more explicitly humorous and slightly more realistic than most of his works, although there is symbolism galore including (for 1 example) The Statue of Liberty holding a sword and not a torch (imagine what Kafka might have symbolized out of our witness protection program). America shares the thesis of an oppressive and intangible system putting the protagonist (naïve, fragile and optimistic) continually into bizarre labyrinthine situations in which he must plead his innocence to remote and mysterious figures of authority (if you are charged, you must be guilty of something), and it uses many details of the life experienced by Kafka's relatives who had … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sotheby & Co. (London)
London, Sotheby & Co., 1938. Two parts in one volume (25 cm), I (30-31 May 1938): (8) 69 (1) pp., frontispiece in colours and 24 plates in monochrome (pls.1-24, some folding). Lots numbered 1-210. II (20-21 June 1938): (6), pp.71-123 (1), frontispiece in colour and 18 plates in monochrome (pls.25-42, some folding). Lots numbered 211-389. Morocco-backed boards, a collector's binding. - The foundations of the library were laid by the fourth Earl (1708-1770), who bought numerous volumes from the Harleian library; after his death little seems to have been added. The two sales realised a total of £38,292 (the twelve Caxtons contributing £15,575 to that total; cf. Percy Muir, "The Ham House Library Sale" in The Times Literary Supplement, 18 June 1938, p.424). The first sale included (lot 90) the 1554 Hypnerotomachie, ou Discours du songe de Poliphile, bound for William Prince of Orange; purchased by Maggs for £240, it passed into Lucius Wilmerding's collection (his sale, Parke-Bernet, 5-6 March 1951, lot 185, $3100), then to the bookseller Pierre Berès (his Catalogue 49, item 62, 1,600,000 francs), and reappeared on the market in the Berès sale, 20 June 2006, lot 17, when it made €352,223 (Antiquariaat Forum BV). The second sale contained the third folio of Shakespeare's plays (1663), in a contemporary red morocco binding; although bid up to £3200, it failed to reach its reserve, and was returned to the family. Together with other unsold lots, it was re-offered by Sotheby's, 24-25 November 1947, lot 448, when it sold to William Foyle for £4400. The copy re-appeared in the Foyle s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gardner, Erle Stanley:
New York: William Morrow and Company. 1938. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Publisher's original black cloth with red titles and blocking to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. An excellent better than very good copy, the binding square and firm with light rubbing at the extremities, the red top stain a little faded. The contents with some offsetting to the pastedown edges are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper which has tiny chips at the spine tips and fold corners. Not price-clipped ($2.00 to the upper front flap). An attractive example. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
