Tirana, Albania: April 24, 1938 - April 11, 1939. An archive of 6 original photographs, showcases important events in Tirana, Albania, on the eve of WWII: from the time of the wedding of Zog I, King of the Albanians, in April 1938, to the invasion of Fascist Italy, in April 1939. - This collection of 6 larger photographs showcases events in Albania in April 1938 and a year later, in April 1939, when Fascist Italy invaded the country. The first four photos show the scenes from the wedding of Albanian King Zog (1895 –1961) with a Hungarian noblewoman Géraldine Apponyi de Nagyappony (1915-2002) on April 27, 1938, which was one of most famous social events in Albanian history of the 20th century. The last two photographs show Tirana on the day of Italian invasion on Albania, with king’s sister, Princess Myzejen lading the Women’s Army Corps, and a quiet main street of Tirana, the Zogu I Boulevard, four days after the invasion. The photographs are as follows: 1. Amazon’s Wedding March. The Amazon Regiment, daughters of leading families, giving their salute as they march past their commanders – sisters of King Zog – during a rehearsal for the wedding celebrations at Tirana to-morrow, when the King of Albania will marry Countess Geraldine Apponyi, who is known as "The White Rose of Hungary". Original card wrappers, spine and front cover printed in black. Spine lightly tanned and creased, a few pencil marks to rear wrapper, else a fine copy. First edition of Jaspers' discussion on the history of philosophy and exposition of his own philosophical system which established him as an influential philosopher of the 20th century. Hemingway, Ernest; Wood, Jasper (Introduction)
Cleveland: The J. B. Savage Company, 1938. Stated First Edition at limitation page. From limitation page: "This book was published in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies on Lineweave paper with Caslon type. This copy is number 191." Tan cloth boards, sharp, lt. shelf wear, rub; protected in original glassine clear sleeve. Dramatic cover art depicting clenched fist in foreground raised to sky against fighter planes above. Very attractive. Pages very good; no writing. Illustrated throughout with dramatically stark images by Frederick K. Russell. Disclaimer from Hemingway inside bk. cover. String-bind solid, straight; hinges intact. Near fine example. Includes an afternote by Hemingway entitled: "The Heat and The Cold". Jasper Wood originally intended to publish the entire limited edition with the FAI flag banner and marching soldiers at the endpapers. But, when Hemingway learned of this, he sent telegram from Key West protesting not only the endpapers, but also Wood's introduction, and the authorial association solely with himself. Hemingway demanded this be clarified with a message he composed which was to be pasted inside the front cover over the flag endpapers - and, unremovable without damaging the book. The endpapers were instead changed to plain tan on the majority of this limited edition, and Hemingway's disclaimer placed inside back cover. This book, published in 1938, contains the unauthorized text of Ernest Hemingway's film narration for The Spanish Earth. A gripping film concerning the Spanish Civil War directed by Joris Ivens. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kafka, Franz
London: Rutledge, 1938. First Edition. 1st edition in English (the 1st U. S. edition was 1940). Publisher's reply card laid in (maybe some kind of review copy, but probably not). Fine in a dustjacket with faint fox spots to the spine otherwise the jacket is also fine. Kafka was a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs, and he died at 41, so like everyone who dies young, he is remembered as vital, intense and filled with potential, a figure made of promise, legends, myths, and memories, not facts. This is the earliest written, but the last published, of the 3 tragicomic novels (with The Castle and The Trial) in his trilogy of loneliness. He began it in 1912 and originally called it The Man Who Disappeared, or by the title of its first chapter, The Stoker, but he regularly referred to it as his American novel, so when it was posthumously published, his executor (Max Brod) titled it America. It is more explicitly humorous and slightly more realistic than most of his works, although there is symbolism galore including (for 1 example) The Statue of Liberty holding a sword and not a torch (imagine what Kafka might have symbolized out of our witness protection program). America shares the thesis of an oppressive and intangible system putting the protagonist (naïve, fragile and optimistic) continually into bizarre labyrinthine situations in which he must plead his innocence to remote and mysterious figures of authority (if you are charged, you must be guilty of something), and it uses many details of the life experienced by Kafka's relatives who had immigrated to America. … [Click Below for Full Description]

(HUDSON'S BAY COMPANY). (CANADIAN HISTORY). HUDSON'S BAY RECORD SOCIETY
London: The Hudson's Bay Record Society, 1938-81. FIRST EDITIONS. This is the complete collection of journals, letters, and reports from the archives of the Hudson's Bay Company, constituting a rich source of information for the early history of Canada. Founded by French fur traders Pierre-Esprit Radisson (1636-1710) and Médard Chouart, Sieur des Groseilliers (1618-1710), the company known in Canada as "The Bay" ("La Baie") received a royal Charter from Charles II of England in 1670 for exclusive trading rights of the Hudson Bay watershed. The Company's representatives travelled deep into the Canadian forests, trapping and trading for furs. They established the settlements that became Winnipeg, Calgary, and Edmonton, and by the early 19th century had penetrated to the Pacific Northwest, setting up Fort Vancouver. The documents reproduced here record those explorations: there is correspondence from the Company to its men in the field, reports from the outposts to the home office, and journals of travels in Northern Quebec and Labrador, Athabasca, Snake Country, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. "The Bay" remains a commercial force to this day, with a retail empire in North America and Europe that includes Saks Fifth Avenue.. 242 x 158 mm. (9 1/2 x 6 1/4"). 33 volumes. FIRST EDITIONS. Publisher's cloth (blue for vols. 1-22, black for the rest), gilt titling and insignia on spine, volumes 24-33 in printed dust jackets, as issued (other volumes issued without jackets).
