Soong Mei-Ling Chiang. (Madam Chiang Kai-shek).
China Information Committee., Hankow, China. 1938 - 381 pages bound in blue chinese silk boards with silk patterned spine and silk panel stitching. Printed on thin paper due to war shortages. Paper label on cover. Some light wear inside and edges of boards, otherwise an excellent and tight copy. Tall octavo. 1938. * The printing history of this work is worth noting; Due to the Japanese advance being only a short distance from Hankow, where the book was printed, the individual hand set type was set up to print 40 pages at a time. The type gathered from various sites around China where nearly a million characters were used by compositors who knew little or no English to produce this and supplies of paper and essentials were very difficult. The trains and rails on the Kowloon-Hankow line were being bombed daily. The Printers ran away to their army barracks and had to be coaxed back to finish the work. Madame Chiang was the first lady of the Republic Of China and wife of Chiang Kai-shek. She rallied the Chinese when the Japanese invaded in 1942. And went to America to seek military aid which she did successfully. She was once considered the most powerful woman in the world. She died in 2003 aged 105. Scarce. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Berger, Josef
Macrae-Smith-Company, Philadelphia 1938 - An unusual book aimed at guys who want to go from copy boy to ace reporter. Unusual in the sense that it combines both fiction and nonfiction. We follow Jerry, a likeable copy boy on a New Jersey daily who puts up with coarse (and frankly awful) editors and pressmen but then gets his big chance to be a reporter. Illustrated with real newsroom and technical photographs of the day. Octavo, 268 pages. Pastedowns slightly darkened on edges, otherwise Near Fine in a Good to Very Good pictorial dust jacket with several shallow chips and tears, including a 1 1/2" tear with creasing to top edge of front panel affecting "O" in "COPY." SCARCE in dust jacket. Journalists will enjoy the depiction of Matt Hale, the city editor, who communicates primarily through growling, screaming and banging his fist on his desk. Very entertaining; most journalists have known editors like Matt Hale. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fuller, R. Buckminster
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1938. Subtitle appears on the dustjacket only: "An Adventure Story of Thought." First Edition. [Date from the copyright page.] An Outline, Maps, Diagrams, Charts---2 folding, Appendixes; xvi, 405 pages. The original copper-colored cloth is in very good shape, despite two small bumps and a bit of rubbing to the softened tail of spine; the corners are sharp and black lettering on spine and upper board is clear. The interior is lightly toned throughout, but clean; top edge is colored to match the boards. The maps on endpapers are clear and folding charts at rear are very good, with no tears and still separated by their glassine divider. [Please see images of actual book, but note that the rich copper color is not represented accurately.] The original dustjacket is quite rubbed, but all text is clearly legible; the front flap, clipped at the top, still retains its $4.00 price at the bottom. This book "is a challenge to every person who is content with things as they are; and for the person who is seeking cures for the many ills of mankind, this book provides a new and satisfying answer." As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is a small, attractive, acid-free bookplate, pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly-----domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority. Filippo de Pisis
L.T. sent by unknown sender to Filippo De Pisis, without place. April 12, 1938. 1 page. In French. (20x27cm). Perfect condition. In this letter, De Pisis finds out that he has sold two of his works to Detroit thanks to the New York gallery "La Cometa". At age 20, the painter from Ferrara, he has the meeting that changes his life: during the military service, he knows the "Dioscuri", the brothers de Chirico and then Carrà. He lets himself be impress by their way of seeing painting and, at the beginning, he shares the metaphysical style. After short stays in Rome and Paris, at the beginning of the 1920's, he started to rework his style, made of suggestions and original subjects, where the pictorial line is fragmented and, therefore, defined by Eugenio Montale as "fly-paw painting" . The friendship with Julius Evola allows him to deepen his esoteric interests and moving them to the modern art. His painting is expressed in still life, landscapes, portraits with a few loose and tense brush strokes. He joins the "Italians of Paris", together with de Chirico, Savinio, Massimo Campigli, Mario Tozzi, Renato Paresce and Severo Pozzati, and French critic Waldemar George. De Pisis is so well-known in Paris that many Italian artists, coming for the first time to the french city, make a stop in Rue Servandoni, in that "pretty house". After the outbreak of the war, he will encounter some difficulties in returning to Italy under fascism. Italo Balbo, his old gymnasium friend, will ensure him the impunity. The object may be located and shipped from Italy, France or UK. L.T. inviata da mitte … [Click Below for Full Description]

EINSTEIN, ALBERT; JACOBI, LOTTE
Princeton: np, 1938. photograph framed. Fine. ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHS OF EINSTEIN, SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER LOTTE JACOBI. In 1938, Einstein agreed to sit for a "photo story" by Life magazine on the condition that Lotte Jacobi be the photographer. A noted female portraitist who photographed many of the 20th century's most famous men and women, Jacobi was descended from a long line of photographers-her great-grandfather having learned the craft from the inventor of photography himself, Louis Daguerre. She abandoned her successful career in Germany in 1935, having declined the Nazis' offer of "honorary Aryan status"-undoubtedly one of the reasons Einstein so admired her.Jacobi disliked the stiff portraiture technique that characterized the photography studio of her time. Rather, it was her method to bring the studio to the subject, and she liked to wait until her models were most at ease before taking a photo. Here she has brilliantly captured Einstein in his Princeton home in a private moment of deep museful thought-at work on scientific equations-casually dressed in his favorite leather ("bomber") jacket and with his signature disheveled hair.Life magazine rejected the photograph on the grounds that it defied the prevailing aesthetics of contemporary photographic journalism and that it did not treat Einstein "with enough respect." But in focusing on the very qualities that defined the inner nature of her subject-his contemplative absorption in his science and his own indifference to social conventions of dress and grooming-Jacobi created one of the most belove … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zweig, Stefan.
First Edition. 11 cm x 17.5 cm. 117 pages. Original hardcover with illustrated dustjacket in Protective Mylar. Excellent condition first edition with only very minor signs of external wear. 1944 erschien in New York die erste Übersetzung ins Englische. [Click Below for Full Description]
