BEATON, Cecil
Philadelphia & New York: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1938. First Edition. Octavo. SIGNED by Beaton and inscribed "best wishes" with a flourish to the front endpaper. Beaton's paean to the splendors of 1930s New York with numerous lovely drawings and photographs, some of which belie Beaton's reputation as a chronicler of the good life and speak to the darker realities of the city. Light foxing to pastedowns and endpapers, small bookplate, else near fine in a bright, almost near fine jacket with a small chip to the top of the front panel by the spine gutter. Uncommon in jacket. Deserves inclusion in the New York canon. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Winston S. Churchill
London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., 1938. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is the precursor to Churchill's great war speeches, the British first edition in the rare yellow dust jacket issued just after Churchill became Prime Minister. The book contains a collection of speeches spanning the years 1928 to 1938 criticizing British foreign policy, his prophetic warnings and exhortations both prophetic and largely unheeded. 5,000 copies of this first and only British impression were printed, of which at least 3,381 and perhaps more than 4,000 were sold with the pale blue, first state dust jacket. The balance - no more than 1,619 copies and quite likely fewer - were offered at a lower price in June 1940 bearing a striking yellow dust jacket. Because the price was reduced with the yellow dust jacket, this has often been called by bibliographers the "Cheap" issue. Given that Churchill had just become Prime Minister in May 1940, it might be more fittingly called the "I Told You So" issue. The yellow dust jackets were issued on laid paper printed red on the front face and spine with a blank rear face and rear flap. Given the inherent sensitivities of the yellow paper and red print, the paper is quite susceptible to soiling and the red spine lettering is nearly always quite faded. Today these yellow, wartime dust jackets are quite rare, considerably scarcer than their pale blue first issue counterparts. This is a near fine copy in a very good plus dust jacket, housed in a full navy goatskin Solander case. The signal feature of this jacket is bright, entirely unfaded r … [Click Below for Full Description]

Churchill, Winston S., British statesman (1874-1965).
1938. Folio. 2 ff. Counter-signed by the publisher George Harrap and witnessed by Churchill's private secretary, Kathleen Hill. Folio 1 initialed by Churchill. Memorandum of agreement between Churchill and his publisher for the rights to publish Churchill's "Europe Since the Russian Revolution". One of the few literary projects that Churchill ever abandoned, his projected work on Europe since the Russian Revolution would surely have been a fascinating addition to the Churchillian canon. This contract with Harrap called for the author to receive the generous amount of £13,500, payable in installments: £1,500 up front; £2,000 on the delivery of the first part of the manuscript; £3,000 on the delivery of the second; and £7,000 on delivery of the third. These payments would be in lieu of any royalties. The contract calls for the first portion of the manuscript to be delivered by no later than June 1941, with Churchill obligated to return his advance with interest for failure to do so. Since this is precisely what happened, this paragraph is boldly marked thrice in pencil in the margin. - Churchill's demanding obligations as member of the War Cabinet and then as Prime Minister and saviour of Britain in 1940 did not leave Harrap in a forbearing or forgiving mood when Churchill tried to get out of this contract. Indeed, his growing stature made him all the more valuable as a literary commodity. As called for in paragraph 10 of this document, the matter went to arbitration, with Churchill arguing that he had completely lost interest in the subject of Europe since the Russian Revolu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Luigi Bartolini (Cupramontana 1892 - Roma 1963)
L'incisione potrebbe essere stata concepita come big … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rawlings, Marjorie K
Scribner's, New York, 1938. Okay, there are books and there are books. Check out the other copies on eBay and you will find a few at various prices - look at the condition. Look at the tears and chunks out and the price. Then look at this. As a collector, I was and am a condition freak and I have never seen a better copy of this classic book. The photos, as always on eBay, don't do it justice. The jacket is almost in perfect condition and certainly some dealers would call it perfect and okay it's pretty perfect as the photos will show you. Not price-clipped. The book is fine. You won't really find a better copy, I shouldn't think. I have a reasonable Buy It Now price and you can make an offer, but please be real. I have come to understand that there are many dealers here buying books as "regular" folks - I always find out and it is kind of irritating when you make a deal and then see the same book listed here with an 80% mark-up. So, if you're a dealer, just drop me a private message and we'll talk. Meantime, grab this while you can. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Eight - page - Manuscript letter (MLS) to Sir Harry and 27 - page manuscript evaluation of personnell at Government House (Fiji) as well as local politicians and possible agitators in Fiji and the British Western Pacific Territories from Arthur Richards, 1st Baron Milverton, in his capacity as Governor of Fiji and High Commissioner of the British Western Pacific Territories. This letter and the manuscript evaluations were sent by Richards on July 10th, 1938, on Stationery from Government House (Fiji) in order to inform Luke of the special situation of the posting before Sir Harry would take over the post (from 1938 - 1942). Very intriguing insights into colonial portraiture of possible troublemakers in the colonial service, excellent service men, clerks, and also recommendations for promotions etc. Arthur Richards evaluation of Sir Alport Barker, owner of ‚The Fiji Times & Herald' is exemplary for the opinionated report to Sir Harry and one of the remarkable reports on 'European Members of the Legislative Council on Fiji and the British Western Pacific Territories: 'Aplort Barker - Has been an elected member for about twelve years, ex-mayor of Suva, owns the Fiji Times = Herald - Member of Executive Council / Has a small-minded, narrow outlook partly the result of physical disability.
