ORWELL, George.
London: Secker and Warburg,, 1938. A remarkably bright copy, in the scarce dust jacket Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge green. With the dust jacket. With a newspaper clipping of Desmond Flower's review in the Observer, dated 29 May 1938, tipped in to the front free endpaper. Housed in a green cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Light foxing to edges, faint offsetting to rear endpapers, some minor rust and indentations from paper clip (now removed) to head of pp. 267-276, a very good, remarkably bright, copy. In a lovely example of the dust jacket, lightly browned spine, chipping to spine ends and tips, slight creasing and nicks to extremities, short closed tear to head of rear panel. First edition, first impression, in the scarce dust jacket. Orwell's previous publisher, Victor Gollancz, turned down Homage to Catalonia, the author's personal account of the Spanish Civil War, viewing it as too overtly critical of orthodox communism (Dudley Edwards, p. 246). The work was picked up by Frederick Warburg, "who was known as the Trotskyite publisher simply because he took left-wing books that were critical of Stalin" and was published in an edition of 1,500 copies (ODNB). It did not sell well, despite the glowing review by Gordon Flowers tipped in to this copy, and "its literary merits were hardly noticed" (ODNB). Whilst at the time it was much abused, "some now think of it as Orwell's finest achievement, and nearly all critics see it as his great stylistic breakthrough: he became the serious writer with the terse, easy, vivid colloquial sty … [Click Below for Full Description]

Octavo, original cloth, photographic frontispiece of Churchill. Signed on the front free endpaper, "Inscribed by Randolph S. Churchill." In near fine condition. All but two of the speeches collected here were delivered by Churchill in the Commons in the years leading up to the Second World War. "The finest (and most ominous) pre-war warning of Winston Churchill occurs on [its] penultimate page. Available in no other Churchill book. the last four paragraphs of that famous speech on 24 March 1938. summarize the theme of this volume, a precursor to the official theme of The Gathering Storm: 'How the English-speaking peoples through their unwisdom, carelessness, and good nature allowed the wicked to re-arm" (Langworth, 190). The jacket is also age-darkened, particularly on the spine and around the edges; a dampstain affects the rear cover and the rear flap; and a small chip is missing at the top of the front. Overall, somewhere between Very Good and Near Fine. In an age before book tours were the norm, people who wanted their books signed by Jeffers usually had to take their books to his home near Carmel, California. Most of those people were more readers than collectors, and consequently (as here) far more often than not books inscribed by Jeffers were read by the recipient … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ayn Rand
UK: Very good. Rand, Ayn. Anthem. Cassell,1938. London. First edition. Small octavo. 147 pp. . Mottled red cloth, with gilt spine and original black endpapers. All edges cut, top edge stained black. Spine gold stamped. One of 3500 issued in two states. Following the spectacular success of her debut novel "We, The Living," Ayn Rand's British publisher, Cassell, evidently felt sufficient confidence in their new author to entrust Welwyn Garden City's high-quality printers The Broadwater Press, with the task of manufacturing her provocatively entitled sci-fi follow-up, an unusually gutsy move for a novella which initially failed, for more than a decade, to find any hardback publisher in the USA. Priced at six shillings, a princely sum for a small book, the result is this attractive binding - mottled red cloth, boldly embellished with rich gilt lining and lettering. Conceived at the height of Red Decade when assumptions of social progress and technological advancement still retained a semblance of desirability within the august minds of Utopian collectivists, the novel accurately portends what really would and actually did happen in collectivist societies throughout the latter half of the twentieth century - stifling dystopias of hate speech laws, regulatory tribunals, speech codes, and thought crimes. Naturally, Rand's literary critics were as insightful as ever; as one contemporary reviewer playfully mocked: "Individuals are so merged in the People that the words 'I' or 'she' are unknown. It is 'we' or 'they'." As if hate speech laws and the usage of personal pronouns could ev … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chief Engineers and Ship Masters
Società Italia Flotte Reuniti, Italia Società Anonima Di Navigazione,, Italy, Costa Rica, Libya, Newfoundland, 1938. On offer is an outstanding collection of three engineering log books of vessels sunk in World War Two (WWII). The log books are those of three ships of the Italian merchant navy MN Cellina, MN Fella, and MN Rialto. In addition to the main or Deck Log, maintained by the ship's Master, a separate log was maintained by the Chief Engineer for the recording of all vital information about the ship's engines, mechanical systems, pressures, operating temperatures, etc. It may also contain technical drawings and specifications. The Chief Engineer had overall responsibility for the Engineering Department and reported directly to the Master or Captain. In 1938, the Italian merchant fleet numbered 1050 vessels grossing 3,180,000 tons. By comparison, the British merchant fleet numbered 9,050 ships grossing 20, 150,000 tons. In 1932, due to the depression and widespread unemployment of Italian ships, the major Italian shipping companies were combined into one state-controlled syndicate under the name Società Italia Flotte Reuniti. By 1937 this syndicate had made rapid recovery and repaid the Government bonds which had supported it. It was then changed into a Limited Company under the name Italia Società Anonima di Navigazione. These three ships - Cellina, Fella and Rialto were part of this syndicate. The ships plied the world's major shipping routes including the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Pacific. In 1940 most Italian ships were requisitioned for military service and by … [Click Below for Full Description]

McWhirter Theory of Stock Market Forecasting Louise McWhirter 1938 First Edition A very good or better collectible copy with light wear. The binding and hinges are nice and tight. Some of the pages have detailed notations in light pencil. These are easily erasable, but I elected not to erase them and believe that they are important. There is also a card laid inside which contains additional notes and a chart. Two pages have a sentence written in ink (see picture). Louise McWhirter (1896 - 1957) was one of the pioneers in financial astrology, which is the use of astrology to forecast the financial markets. In 1938, she published her only book, McWhirter Theory of Stock Market Forecasting. McWhirter's main theory is that the major of primary trend of business volume and finance are clearly pointed out by the 18.6-year cycle of the North Node as it passes through the twelve signs of the zodiac. During a long-term trend, the four crucial points of the stock market are reached when the Node enters the four fixed signs respectively. This book represents an excellent source of information for those traders and investors interested in price points and timing buying and selling. It's also quite rare and one of the top books on the recommended reading list of William Gann. The OCLC locates only 2 copies. Please view my other listings. Thank you! [Attributes: First Edition]

Anne Morrow Lindbergh; Charles Lindbergh
Chatto & Windus. Anne Morrow Lindbergh and Charles Lindbergh (1938) 'Listen! The Wind', UK first edition, first printing, published by Chatto & Windus. Signed and inscribed by Anne Morrow and Charles Lindberg on the title page "For Mr and Mrs Hook from Anne Morrow Lindbergh and Charles Lindbergh, [place?] 1938". Condition: the book is very good + condition. The book is internally clean with no other inscriptions and no foxing to endpapers or other pages whatsoever. Boards are clean with a little shelf wear. A few ageing spots to the top page block edges. The dust jacket is good with some loss to the edges and is price clipped. This is the much scarcer UK first edition which is exceptionally scarce signed (far more common is the US first edition). The book comes with a brief note of provenance from the previous owner. As is correctly stated, the Lindbergh couple, following the kidnapping of their young son ('the crime of the century') relocated to the UK for a few years to escape the media onslaught back in their home. During their stay in Britain there was opportunity to sign a few UK copies such is in this example. This book tells the story how the couple crosses the Atlantic by plane from Africa to South America in 1933. Anne Morrow wrote the book and Charles wrote the foreword and provided the maps. The book won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in The US and was a bestseller back in those days. Charles Lindbergh was the first man to cross the Atlantic in a plane from New York to Paris in 1927. The flight took 33 1/2 hours in the 'Spirit of St Louis'. E.E. Cummings
Published by Harcourt, Brace & Company (New York 1938). First edition, first printing. Hardcover, bound in burnt orange cloth, in dust jacket, in protective Mylar wrapper. The top of the text block is foxed and darkened, but the covers aren't; the jacket front and spine are sunned toward orange-tan, but free of tears; else near fine. In nearly 40 years of looking, I've never seen - or seen offered for sale - a fine copy of this book. Since it's faded but not damaged, I'd call it much better than Very Good, but it doesn't look Like New. This is the 1st collected edition of Cummings' poems. Firmage A17. [Movies]. Keaton, Buster.
New York / Los Angeles, 1938. Hardcover. 1 page, legal folio, November 9, 1938. An historic document signed by Buster Keaton under his full legal name, Joseph F. Keaton, in which he signs away all rights in Buster Keaton Productions, the company that produced and owned his great silent film masterpieces. "The undersigned, Joseph F. Keaton, in consideration of the sum of one thousand dollars, does hereby remise, release and forever discharge the said Buster Keaton Productions, Inc., its successors and assigns, of all claims, demands and damages of any kind whatsoever against said Buster Keaton Productions . assigns . any interest or share in the proceeds from the sale by Buster Keaton Productions, Inc., of its studio property." Signed by Keaton and countersigned and sealed by a Los Angeles notary. By 1938 Keaton's film career was in ruins and silent films were considered worthless. The company had been created for Keaton by Joe Schenck, his brother-in-law, on whom Keaton relied heavily for financial advice and direction. At the end of the silent era, Schenck sold Keaton to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, forever ending the great period of Keaton's creative independence as a filmmaker. In 1954, a chance meeting with Raymond Rohauer, a Los Angeles movie theatre manager and film collector, led Rohauer to buy all rights left in Buster Keaton Productions and to revive the company in partnership with the classic comedian. Rohauer searched the world to preserve the Keaton silent films that still survived and Keaton lived long enough to witness the revival of his great art at the Venice Film … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Western Americana]. Whatley, Jack "Pecos" [Meek Luther]
(n. p.), Circa 1938-1948. Good. 26 x 33 cm. Customized leather album containing over 180 b&w photos of varying sizes on 21 black construction paper leaves and laid in (some apparently having come loose of their corner mounts), plus a number of participation passes and tickets, newspaper clippings, a handful of drawings and school material, 11 cloth and/or canvas armbands and numbers worn while competing, plus one cardboard "1st place" placard. Approximately a third of the photos are captioned in white ink. Leaves detached from binding and chipping at edges, with occasional modest loss. Images mostly sharp and clear. The photo album and scrapbook of Jack "Pecos" Whatley, a rodeo circuit rider from Douglas, Arizona, documenting rodeos and fellow riders and friends in Arizona, California, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Ohio, New York, Delaware, and Mexico. The majority of these photos are portraits of riders and show performers before, after or en route to shows, capturing the comaraderie on the circuit among men and women. Also included are photos of riders during the rodeos, riding bulls and bucking broncos, lassoing calves, and, more often than not, mid-fall to the ground; these photos are particularly riveting, revealing the drama and danger of rodeo riding. Meek Luther Whatley, also known as Jack "Pecos" Whatley" (1920 - 1975) was the son of a cowboy/ cattleman (Stonewall Jack Whatley) and appears to have been a natural on the rodeo circuit, a solid rider who seems to have rarely won but who competed frequently and obviously felt at home on the circuit. In 1950, he was charged … [Click Below for Full Description]

Phila., Pa.: Gum, Inc., 1938. Original drawing on artist board measures 2-7/16" x 3-1/16"; published card printed on cardboard measures 2-1/2" x 3-1/8"; graded card is encapsulated within a PSA plastic holder. Gum, Inc. (later Bowman)'s 1938 Horrors of War trading cards are the most popular and most sought out non-sports cards ever produced. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website: "Initially conceived as a way to graphically illustrate and inform the public about the atrocities of the Chinese-Japanese War, the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, and the Spanish Civil War, the set proved so popular that an additional 48 cards were added [to the original 240], about Germany and the beginning of World War II." Many of the images in the set are shocking, even by today's standards. Scenes of torture, bloody battlefields and children under attack are all shown in graphic detail; printed on the back of every card in the set is the explanation for showing such graphic scenes: "To know the HORRORS OF WAR is to want PEACE;" it would seem that the lesson was not learned. The most sought out and expensive cards in the Horrors of War set are the three cards that feature Adolf Hitler: #'s 277, 283 and 286. This offering is for the original artwork for, and a PSA 6 EX-MT, card #277, i.e., one of the most desirable cards of the most … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ansel Adams
Berkeley CA: The Archetype Press, 1938. Very good condition. Everything intact, nothing missing, little fading, etc., though book is approaching a century in age. A chance to own a piece history. This is a first edition of Ansel Adams' famous "Sierra Nevada - the John Muir Trail." The hardcover is cloth, with some discoloration towards the edges. The first number of endpapers have some water soiling, but the remainder of the book is in very good condition, especially considering it is 81 years old! I studied with Ansel Adams at Yosemite in 1958, and received a phone call from his wife Virginia a few months later, explaining the book was for sale, so I purchased it when it was only 20 years old (and I was 30)! I protected the book with clear acetate for over 60 years, mostly in a dresser drawer. There is some tan discoloration to the page edges because of its age. This was Adams' first major work, and includes 50 of his tipped-in photographs printed in half-tone by Lakeside Press of Chicago. The Lakeside images are in very good+ condition, with the exception of Image XIII, "Detail, Devil's Postpile," which has a few crinckles, as can be seen in the photos of that page. This is a limited edition of 500 numbered and signed copies, of which this is a very early number, #44. Price includes shipping insurance through FedEx. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Designed and printed by Carroll D. Coleman at The Prairie Press, Muscatine, IA, 1938. 75pp. Octavo [25 cm] Gray cloth with gilt stamped title on backstrip. Ex-library (legitimately discarded), with the usual labels and stamps, as well as evidence of the pocket having been removed on the rear free endpaper. The cloth boards are a bit toned, and the cloth at the ends of the backstrip is slightly frayed. First and only printing. Stegner's uncommon third printed work. Stegner's influence on American writers is enormous.
