Graham Greene
London: Routledge, 1938. Near Fine with Very Good Jacket. First Edition, First Issue in original Dust Jacket. Rare thus. An excellent copy of the book in original publisher's grey cloth, spine ends and corners very slightly bumped, original dust-jacket price-clipped with expert repairs and restorations to length of top edge, joints foot of spine and fore-edge. 8vo, 1938. Originally withdrawn by Routledge after pressure from the Home Office, this fictionalised autobiography of a prostitute was in fact written by Ronald Matthews with the assistance of Greene. Routledge. Only a handful of copies from this edition reached the market. The book was subsequently published the same year in Paris and New York, but this true first edition remains an elusive book. ERIC RAVILIOUS 'High Street' 1St edition, published by Country Life in 1938, editor J.M Richards. A clean unsophisticated copy with all 24 lithographs present. In original condition with no repairs, no inscriptions, no foxing, and with firm end papers. The fragile card spine is lifting and needs re-gluing. John Piper wrote of the lithos: "Ravilious is a particular English artist. The delight of his new lithographs of shop fronts is of a kind that is rare enough. There is about them the suggestion that you are looking in at a series of gay, old-fashioned parties from a matter-of-fact street in the present. They are records of passing beauty, but they are full of present-day experience. and they are faithful enough to look like tuck-shops full of sherbet, liquorice and lollipops-which, after all, is one of the chief appeals of the attractive shop." They were the days! Please note: I never knowingly mis-describe an item, but to err is human and mistakes will inevitably occur. In the unlikely event of an auction win being not as described, please get in touch, we offer a no quibble return. [Attributes: First Edition]

JAMES, WILL [EDITED BY ALICE DALGLIESH]
Charles Scribner's Sons, [1938]., New York. First edition. 8vo. Orange pictorial cloth, titles and drawing printed in black on the front cover and spine, yellow pictorial endpapers with A Letter From Will James printed on the inside front cover and About Will James on the rear fly leaf, 158 [2] pp., illustrated, frontispiece in color. This is a scarce title as it was issued in only 100 copies that were not offered for retail sale. According to Jeff Dykes, the late collector, dealer and acknowledged expert of many phases of Western Americana, believed this book to be the most difficult to locate. He further stated, "while the publisher refuses to confirm or deny this, I have long suspected that this book was issued in a very small edition with the intent of getting it adopted as a supplementary reader by schools. No dealer can remember ever being offered copies of this book for over-the-counter sales. My own copy was evidently submitted to the Texas State Textbook Commission, but was not adopted." It has been stated that the Texas school system did not accept it because of James' cowboy vernacular and that 90 % of the books were destroyed. Abe Hays, noted Will James historian and authority says of this book, "Only 100 copies were printed; I can prove it!" Don Frazier says, "There are surely very few around and it is probably the most rare Will James book." Minor wear to the spine ends and corners else a fine copy housed in a clamshell case with titles on the spine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

COTTON, Will
1938. Unbound. Fine. Original pastel. Image size matted to 11" x 15". Framed. Signed in lower left ("W. Cotton"). Additionally Inscribed by Cotton in discreet white album ink in the upper righthand corner to fellow illustrator and close friend R. Roberts Baldwin: "To Baldy (the figure on the left) from W. Cotton." Unexamined out of the frame, but all indications are that the image is fine and completely unfaded. Accompanied by a near fine issue of the published magazine. This St. Patrick's Day cover depicts an African-American man dressed in a festive green sash and Irish-style top hat with affixed shamrock, with a liquor bottle between his knees, passed out on the steps of a brownstone, apparently the victim of over indulgence on St. Patrick's Day, while a redheaded, presumably Irish policeman strokes his chin and looks on displaying emotions that ranges somewhere between consternation and perplexity. Both a caricaturist and respected portrait painter, Cotton created some of the most arresting of the magazine's covers between 1932 and 1951. This particular cover was the first example cited by then-art director Lee Lorenz in a 1997 article when he wrote about controversial "politically incorrect" covers published by *The New Yorker,* where he stated: "By way of illustration, so to speak, consider this arbitrary sample of zingers from a less enlightened age--not quite B.C., but definitely pre-P.C. Will Cotton's covers, skillfully executed in pastel, are memorable for their elegance and gentle wit. He was a gifted caricaturist, and his portraits of people were always war … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Dickens, Charles
The Nonesuch Press, 1938. First Nonesuch Edition #869 of 877. Original cloth. Limited to 877 sets, complete with the original woodcut entitled "On Dangerous Ground" engraved after Luke Fildes (includes a pull taken from the woodcut with letter of authenticity signed by Arthur Waugh); and Nonesuch Dickensiana: Retrospectus and Prospectus. 8vo. Various paginations. Edited by Arthur Waugh, Hugh Walpole, Thomas Hatton and Walter Dexter. Frontispiece, numerous illustrations, mostly in-text. bound in cloth of various colors with gilt-lettered black leather spine labels; TEG. Slight fading to spines; scratch across lower spine of "David Copperfield"; minor wear; a near fine set. This is a heavy set and will require additional shipping. The Nonesuch Press was founded in 1922 in London by poet Francis Meynell, his wife, Vera, and author David Garnett. In 1937, the press decided to produce a definitive collection of Charles Dickens's work by printing beautifully designed and bound sets that featured the author's original typesetting. The major part of the appeal of the set was that each complete set that was purchased came with one of the original engraved steel plates used for the illustrations in the first editions of Dickens's novels. The Nonesuch Press purchased the plates from Dickens's original publisher, Chapman and Hall and they were authenticated and packaged for this purpose. The limitation was determined by the number of original illustrated plates used in the first editions by Chapman and Hall. The Nonesuch edition contains full-color illustrations selected by Dickens him … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]
