        Out of Africa.

New York: Random House, 1938. First American edition of the author's classic memoir, which recounts events of the seventeen years when Blixen made her home in Kenya. Octavo, bound in full dark green morocco, gilt titles and ruling to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In fine condition. From 1914 to 1931, Danish aristocrat Baroness Karen Blixen owned and operated a coffee plantation in Kenya. After the plantation failed, she returned to Europe and began to write under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories in which she adheres to no strict chronology, gives no explanation of the facts of her life, and apologizes for nothing. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest works of nonfiction of the twentieth century. Basis for the film directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which went on to win seven Academy Awards.

        [Photo Album]: Pennsylvania Woman

Pennsylvania, New York, 1938. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 10.5" x 12.5". Screw bound brown leather over stiff paper board with gilt decorations. Contains 352 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 2.75" and 5" x 7" with captions. Near fine photo album with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a young Pennsylvania woman beginning in 1938 and continuing through 1949. The album begins with trips the family took in Pennsylvania in 1938 including one to Camp Adahi, Hopewell Park, and later the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania," Pine Creek Gorge. This is followed by a school picnic for the woman's middle school choir class with photos of people playing games at an outdoor picnic site. She also photographed her friends and family at the New Jersey seaside with images of girls in the ocean and crowds on the beach in Atlantic City. Her family visited Niagara Falls in 1939 photographing the Canadian side, rapids, and the American falls. Her 8th grade class took a trip around Buck's County, Pennsylvania and went to the Friends Meeting House, the Reading Airport, and Daniel Boone's homestead. Another trip in 1940 took them to Lancaster and Hersey and she also graduated from 8th grade later that year. In 1940 they went to the New York World's Fair which went on simultaneously with the San Francisco World's Fair. The New York showcase was the first to base itself "in the future" and used the slogan "Dawn of a New Day" and was also the site of the first science fiction convention. The album shows the crowds, parachute jumpers, the Perisphere. While in high school she was a part of the May Day court, participating in community day, and enjoyed leisure time with girlfriends. They went to Maryland and Washington, D.C. and went back to the New Jersey beaches and Camp Adahi almost every summer. Photos from June of 1943 show a woman in a WAC uniform and a girl graduating. There are photos from Christmas parties, Thanksgiving, and posing with the family dog. She participated in the celebration of "Decoration Day" in their town where she was in the color guard. Her prints from 1948 include a caption on each with the month, year, and "Reading's Bicentennial Year" on the edge of the photo. This includes the parade in honor of the 175th anniversary of Reading's fire department. The final pages show a beach trip to Atlantic City in August of 1949.An interesting look at a decade in a young woman's life through her school years and World War II.

The War the Infantry Knew 1914-1919.

London: P.S. King & Son Ltd,, 1938. A Chronicle of Service in France and Belgium with The Second Battalion His Majesty's Twenty-Third Foot, The Royal Welch Fusiliers: founded on personal records, recollections and reflections, assembled, edited and partly written by One of their Medical Officers. Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt titles to the spine, regiment initials gilt to front board. 27 leaves of sketch-maps bound in at the rear. Ends and corners rubbed, the spine a touch discoloured, a very good copy. First edition, one of just 500 copies privately produced by the author, this a superb Royal Welch Fusiliers association copy, with gilt supralibros: "Presented to the Officers of the 2nd Bn. The Royal Welch Fusiliers by Lieutenant-Colonel D. M. Barchard", and with the ink stamp "Officers' Mess. 2nd Bn. Royal Welch Fusiliers" to front pastedown. Barchard was commissioned in the RWF in 1911 and served in the 1st Bn in the early months before the war before being captured and spending the next four years in captivity in Germany. In 1939 he was Commanding Officer, 2nd Bn in Hong Kong, then in Lucknow. An inked note to the title page identifies the author as "Dr. Dunne [sic] of Glasgow. Appears as Dr. Munro in Sassoon's 'Sherston's Progress'. Had served in the Yeomanry in South Africa and won the DCM as a trooper." During the Second World War the 2nd Bn. served in India and Madagascar. The battalion included the authors of two of the most famous literary accounts of the Great War, Graves and Sassoon, with the latter contributing a chapter to the present work entitled "A Subaltern's Service in Camp and in Action," covering the period from 12 March to 16 April 1917, which is described as, "An early draft of pages of Memoirs of an Infantry Officer." Graves offered to contribute, but Dunn was not an admirer of Goodbye to all that, and declined his offer. Graves is mentioned, disparagingly, a handful of times in the text. Dunn's is an extraordinary book; in the Face of Battle John Keegan described it as "one of the most interesting and revealing books of its type … a genuinely truthful and fascinating picture of the war as it was for the infantry." Compiled in diary form from the reminiscences of around 50 members of the Battalion, it is without doubt the most authentic account of the experience of the Western Front at Battalion level. Providing complete confirmation of the old cliché that war is "90 per cent boredom and 10 per cent sheer terror", these accounts provide remarkable insight into the mental state invoked by the conditions of trench warfare.

Chapman & Hall Ltd, London 1938 - First edition Scoop by Evelyn Waugh, Chapman & Hall Ltd, UK 1938, The first edition Scoop is in very good condition with an unclipped dust jacket with repairs. The book remains a highly collectable first edition. Evelyn Waugh based this satire on his stint as a war correspondent for the Daily Mail in Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) in 1935. The resulting novel was a satirical, farcical book that takes lighthearted but steely aim at the journalistic profession and the newspaper industry. Original red and black patterned covers with minimal signs of wear to the extremities. The contents are lightly browned and in very good condition. Clean end papers. Tight bindings. The dust jacket has the missing parts of the original spine and edges repaired with paper sections. Chipping on the folds and edges. Rubbed covers. 8v0 308pp [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First Edition of "the first book of world literature on this issue! "In Germany of the pre-war period Ernest Vaubel at Wiesbaden was the most emminent arthroscopist. The optic was definitely longer than the trocard and the electric bulb at the tip was in danger during manipulation in a narrow joint. -Vaubel did a rather small series of arthroscopies from 1936 to 1939 at the University hospitals of Leipzig and Frankfurt, using local anaesthesia and air medium. 1938 he held a paper at the International Congress of Rheumatologists at Bath. In the same year he published a monograph titled "Die Arthroskopie", the first book of world literature on this issue. 1939 he leaved the Frankfurt university hospital and went in his own private practice. 1941-1944 he did military service as medical officer of the air force. After war he hadn't more facilities to practice arthroscopy. - His ideas and his instrument were revived in the german speaking countries in the late fifties by the sports surgeons Gottwald Heiss at Stuttgart and Reinhold Suckert at Linz."         Norm Nevills--Collection of 15 Photographs

Photographs. This collection of photographs chronicles the river trips of one of the most famous whitewater river runners, Norm Nevills. Collection includes 14 photographs and 1 postcard with images taken between 1938 and 1952. Most photographs depict "Nevills Expedition" river trips with one photograph of a "Mexican Hat Expeditions" river trip, one photograph of Otis "Doc" Marston, and one photograph of Norm and his wife Doris. Three of the photographs depict the same image, each a different size, of the group with the dory "Music Temple" of Nevills Expeditions. Photographs vary in size, measuring as follows: eight 7"x5", two 10" x 8", one 8"x 4 ¾", one 4 ¾"x 3 ½", one 5"x3", one 8 ½" x6 ½", and one postcard measuring 5 ½"x 3 ½". All photographs are in very good condition, all have pencil marginalia and/or rubber stamp with date, photographer or provenance on verso; some photographs have light wear to edges and a few have light soiling affecting content; postcard has blue marginalia on front, affecting content. Norm Nevills, river runner, is most widely known for his river trip down the San Juan and Colorado Rivers in 1938, which lasted 43 days and was historic due to the two women who accompanied him and completed the trip. Dr. Elzada Clover, a University of Michigan botanist, and a graduate student, Lois Jotter, wanted to catalogue the flora of the Grand Canyon and engaged Nevills to organize the trip. One photo included here, depicts three of the crew of the 1938 river run, Nevills, Don Harris, hired to pilot the dory "Mexican Hat", and Dr. Elzada Clover, eating a melon in Lee's Ferry, Arizona. Another remarkable photo included is of Nevills, Randall Henderson, founder of Desert Magazine, and Al Millate sitting in the "WEN," Norm Nevills' boat he took on the 1938 trip. These are marvelous photographs documenting an extraordinary time in river running history. Please call for more images. .

La Famille Cardinal [DESIGN BINDING - Gruel] , [Degas Illustrations]

Paris: Auguste Blaizot & Fils, 1938. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Degas, Edgar. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. 161 p. Signed by Illustrator(s). Limited edition, this no. 142 of 325 copies (plus 25 hors de commerce), in a lavish design binding, the only book considered to have been illustrated by Degas. Bound by the Parisian bookbinding atelier of Gruel, with their stamp on the front turn-in. Sarah Prideaux, one of the noted women bookbinders of the period, stated that the Gruel atelier 'is the oldest established of all described in this paper (Bookbinders and Their Craft).founded in 1811. from its earliest days the business has always had the highest reputation, both for initiative in artistic matters, as well as for irreproachable execution in the detail of its many-sided achievements. It has indeed been the nursery of all the chief binders of the time, and no other house in any country has a roll-call of such distinguished names'. Considered the only book illustrated by Degas. His close friend Ludovic Halevy, writer and librettist of Carmen, "documented Paris backstage activity in short stories gathered into one volume called La Famille Cardinal. Degas illustrated these fictional adventures of Pauline and Virginie Cardinal and their parents. Halevy, however, failed to recognize the greatness of these monotypes", which remained unpublished until 1938 when they were purchased at auction, reduced and reproduced by photogravure for this work (N.B., from web site of Virginia Commonwealth University, published January 15, 2014). ***DESCRIPTION: Binding of full rust-coloured morocco, lavishly decorated on both the front and back boards with gilt and black, in a pattern of swirls and dots recalling the gaiety and footlights of the Parisian stage; the spine has four raised bands, gilt lettering, the compartments decorated with gilt and black rules and dots; the edges of the boards have thin black and gilt lines, the turn-ins are decorated to match the boards. All edges are gilt, lined with rose-coloured watered silk doublures, with the original wraps bound in. Title page in red and black; chapter headings, initial capitals, and page numbers in red. Illustrated with 32 photogravures of monotypes by Degas, the etchings done by Maurice Potin, with an additional two in-text etchings; of the 32 photogravures, six are in full colour.         SINA-JAPANESE HOSTITLITY IN SHANGHAI, 1937. Japanese Title: SHINA JI-HEN SHA SHI

[Shanghai 1938]. Leatherette binding, spine 3/4 chipped away & back cover lacks 3+cm. paper covering, book solid, sound, captions & preface in English/Japanese, 23 x 31 cm., 400 b.w photos, all in all good plus. FIRST & ONLY RARE EDITION GRIM JAPANESE MILITARY PHOTOS:THE FALL OF SHANGHAI & NANKING *** This work was the results of three photographers: the famous and celebrated Tamagawa Toyokichi of Osaka, the main photographer, who was assisted by Tamagawa Denn [his brother or ? relative], and Yamazaki Yoshimi. Each traveled with a different military group of the Japanese army in China, recording for posterity, the true and brutal Japanese take-over of civilian Shanghai and environs. It covers the "Incident" from July 7, 1937 -August 15, 1945. Co-editor was Nishino Yoshio. The work was officially censored by the Riku-Kai Gun Hodoh-Bu Kenn-Etsu, or the press bureau of the Japanese Imperial Navy and Army. The photograps were taken by Tamagawa Toyokichi, Tamagawa Hiroshi and Yamazaki Yoshimi. * This photographic resource was taken to record the actions of the "Glorious Japanese Army" and their successful results in the Fall of Shanghai & Nanking, China's capitol. Japan's provocation for this battle was famous incident staged by Japanese politicians, known as the "Marco Polo bridge incident."Wherein the Japanese claimed that on July 7, 1937, two Japanese military men were murdered at their post on the Marco Polo bridge by Chinese Kuomingtang regulars. After this a full-scale Japanese invasion of Shanghai and the rape and sacking of Nanking occurred. Japan's brutal air bombing of civilian targets continued. This is the record of that landing and those military assaults on the Chinese population and on Chinese soil. It was the key instrument for Japan to occupy China setting the stage for the Pacific War. * Taken from the Japanese point of view, the whole work is a celebratory publication to commemorate successful Japanese military in action during the capture of Shanghai and the brutal Rape of Nanking. Ultimately ending in the Japanese establishment of a Chinese puppet government in Nanking. This was the ultimate goal of the Japanese to militarily and politically control all of China and Manchuria as found in the secret plan of war. * This work contains superb photos of the victorious Japanese army and navy in action. From the beginning of this book, we are presented a grand view of Japan's elite and highest military officers. Excellent tipped-in photos grace this book, showing: Minster of Navy: Mitsumasa Yonai; Vice Adm- ial Kiyoshi Hasegawa and General Iwane Matsui; General S. Hata, commander of the Central China army; historic group photos of the commanders and leading officers; followed by a great number of action photos showing the advance, bombing, attacks on the Chinese and their cities. Panic in Shanghai streets as rumor spread of the eminent war breaking out. The removal of Japanese from China as they leave China homeward bound. War council meetings of the Japanese military as they prepare for the attack on Shanghai. Arrival of Japanese lan- ding party: marines and soldiers follow plain-clothes Japan- ese agents who pointed out the enemy strong-holds. China's early response to the Japanese invasion by six Chinese air- force planes. Great battle at Character Bridge by Japanese sailors, and fierce attacks. Chinese bombardment of Japanese military vessels in Pootong. Cooperation of Japanese naval & army forces to bombard coastal areas; retalitation of Japan- ese air force. Japanese sinking of Chinese shipping across the Wanpoo River, and blockade. Tremendous & terrible attac- ks on the Chinese army and civilian targets. Eastern Shang- hai, schools, universities, factories now main targets. Chi- nese poison water wells. Japanese capture of Chinese head- quarters located in Shanghai city government buildings. * Japan's air attack on Shanghai's railway superintendent offices, Chapei battle, naval air fleet attacks on Nanking, devastation of all Chinese air-dromes, arrival of massive Japanese naval vessels on the Yangtze River. Woosung landing of additional Japanese forces, air bombing of Ninpoo city and rail station, landing at Hangcow, route of Chinese. The sinking of large number of Chinese war ships, fall of Nan- king, December 17th, 1937.and the triumph march of Japanese troops through the Chenhwa Gate. * Japanese attack and capture of Tsingtao in Shantung Province the victory march of Japanese army cavalry over the famous Shanghai land-mark the Garden Bridge, and infantry marching down Nanking road. The Japanese Consulate General's office under fire from Chinese war planes, and a final review of the troops by Admiral Hata on March 10th, Japanese Army Day. * The historic establishment of the Chinese puppet government in Nanking showing the new Japanese-appointed Chinese admin- strators [collaborators !!] wearing traditional Chinese long gowns. More photos of that celebration, pomp and ceremony. * A final page shows a series of four photos: with a note in Japanese [with English translation] about the death of the editor of this book who was mortally wounded on Oct 14th, from a Chinese mortar shell; another shows the editor, Mr. Nishihara being helped by other colleagues who were photog- raphers of this book; and a photo of the actual and deadly mortar shell and the impression it left in the street ! There is a typed note tipped on to the first fly leaf in English: "As a momento of the eventful days we went through in August-October, 1937. With compliments T. Tamagawa, September 17th, 1938." * The overall condition of the binding is fairly good, there is some darkening to the covering material, and the spine covering is nearly gone, and also lacks a strip f rom about 1-5 cm. missing on the back leading edge. A small spot on the front cover also gone but polished. We are overly crit- ical on the condition of our books so be assured it's prob- ably in better condition than we express here. The book is otherwise stable, internally clean & solid, without any fox- ing or other defects whatsoever. Due to the condition, one can theorize that the book may have either survived the American fire-bombing of Osaka where it was printed, or in Shanghai where a copy remained based on the English language presentation slip tipped, one could assume it was held by a foreigner located in the war zone...perhaps a German Axis colleague or other friend. * This work shows for all time, the actual events carried out by the Japanese from their point of view. The Chinese natur- ally have & recorded a substantially different set of brutal photographs & historical works on this same battle. Suffice to say, there are very few records from the Japanese side about the fall of Shanghai and the rape of Nanking. This is certainly one of a very few, a true and definitive primary resource on resource on the subject. * CONDITION: The book was bound in a brown "leatherette" type paper covers looking like leather. There are some 3/4 of the spine cover lacking, and the back covers lack a strip at the leading edge from top to bottom, approximately 1.5 x 4 cm. wide. The work was printed on heavy paper, which is soild and firm. The binding is solid, and the book is NOT shaken. There is minor corner and edge wear to the covers. Given the age and nature of the materials used, this book is still by and large, in remarkably good condition. * RARITY: This book is rare. Printed in a Deluxe edition, binding and size for the period. It was clearly a work designed to show the world of Japan's strength and willingness to conquer China at all cost, regardless of the opinion of others. It was the "New Japan" and they were going to give the world a good look at their success over the Chinese. While the book does not state any limitation in terms of number of copies printed, this sort of word was limited to a small number of copies. By and large they were distributed to their allies and other foreign diplomatic corps as a 'warning' and 'advice' to the Japanese sentiment and eagerness to consume China. After all, just which people on the planet during this time would find such a book interesting and of benifical use ? * .
