Beardsley: [10], 11-105, [3] pp; Sixteen black and white illustrations of which twelve are full-page. Derain: [8], 9-71, [1], [1, limitation], 1, blank] pp. Ten inserted color plates on black paper. Publisher's full terra cotta cloth with gilt decoration (Beardsley), and black printed wrappers (Derain). The Derain volume in original mylar as issued. A fine set. Housed in the publisher's red cardboard slipcase (a little worn at extremities). When Salomé was first published in February 1893, the Pall Mall Budget magazine asked Beardsley for a drawing in response. They rejected the macabre, fantastic image he based around the play's last scene, in which Salomé embraces the severed head of John the Baptist. J'ai Baisé Ta Bouche, Iokanaan. Here, it is redrawn as 'the Climax', without the text. In April, however an art publication, The Studio, ran it as part of its first edition. Wilde saw the drawing pre-publication and liked it; in March, he inscribed a copy of the earlier printing of the book "March '93. For Aubrey. For the only artist who, besides myself, knows what the Dance of the Seven Veils is, and can see that invisible dance." Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (21 August 1872 - 16 March 1898) was an English illustrator and author. At the age of nineteen he achieved notable and lasting acclaim for his illustrations in the Dent edition of Malory's Le Morte Darthur in 1892. He was a leading figure in the Aesthetic movement which also included Oscar Wilde and James A. McNeill Whistler. In 1894, Beardsley became the art editor of The Yellow Book under the general editorship of Oscar Wilde but with his advancing tuberculosis and Wilde's arrest - that put an end to that satirical periodical. His drawings in black ink, influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts, emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic. Although in increasingly poor health, Beardsley continued to produce illustrations, including those in The Savoy, The Rape of the Lock, and The Lysistrata. Aubrey Beardsley died from tuberculosis at the very young age of 25 on the 16th March, 1898. André Derain (1880-1954) was a French artist, painter, sculptor and co-founder of Fauvism with Henri Matisse.

Dessin original à Nelly de Vogüé

New York , 30 avril 1938, 16,2x21,5cm, une feuille. - New York , 30 avril 1938, 16,2x21,5cm, une feuille.

15th Infantry in Tientsin and Shanhaikwan, China, 1920s. Photograph Album

1938. Hardcover. Very good condition. A scarce album of photographs of a little known U.S. military presence in China in the 1900s, between the World Wars. The album includes many images of the US 15th Infantry Regiment (2nd and 3rd Battalions) in Tientsin on the South China Sea about 90 miles from Peking. The regiment performed security duties as part of the China Relief Expedition following the Boxer Rebellion, and remained in China for 25 years. The Boxer protocols provided for foreign military contingents to be stationed in China, among other places, in Tientsin. The 15th Infantry's primary mission was to represent U.S. interests in China and to promote stability in the area. The album, set up in reverse chronological order, opens with a series of 15 stock photographs of atrocities committed by the Japanese against the Chinese, following the Japanese invasion of Manchuria and the taking of Tientsin in 1937. The album owner appears to have kept a record of his time in China right up to the end -- the time of the Japanese attack on Tientsin. The 15th Infantry departed the city in March of 1938. The majority of the album consists of numerous snap shots taken in the 1920s of the camp, the company members, and scenes of life in the city. Captions on the verso identify two company members as Paul G. Jones and [not stated] Lawe; many are dated June 1925. One such shot is captioned "Jones & Lawe. Looking north on Taku Road from Dixon Road, Tientsin, March 1925". The images depict the regiment in various locations: in the city with many landmarks, including churches, schools, parks and pagodas; posing with Chinese troops, in parade formation, practicing with artillery in the field, and in camp with rows of tents. There are numerous snap shots of city street scenes: vendors, horse drawn carriages, a curtained litter being carried through the streets, festival scenes, members of a brass band, and US Navy vessels in the harbor (includes one with "38" on the hull). There are also printed photographs and 3 Chinese postcards. Despite the circumstances, the 15th Infantry enjoyed many privileges in China. There were Chinese staff and servants, excellent food and alcohol (even during Prohibition), tailor made uniforms, and even summer camps at a nearby beach. The sharp contrast between the content of the photographs of life from the 1920s at the back of the album and the photographs of the atrocities at the front of the album cannot be overstated. 40 real snap shots, ranging in size from 1 1/4 x 1 1/4" (portrait snap shot) to 5 1/4 x 3 1/4"; with 15 stock photographs of atrocities. Album measures 12 x 7". Black stiff textured paper covered boards, cord bound, "Photographs" printed on front board; very faint white streak at front cover. Photographs in very good condition.

        Homage to Catalonia.

1938 - Secker and Warburg, London, 1938. 8vo., original cloth with supplied dust wrapper. Boards of book somewhat soiled and rubbed with a light scrape along spine, some nicks to cloth at extremities of spine, wrapper with some loss and wear with front flap detatched, otherwise a very good copy. First edition signed by the author in full on the front free endpaper (for his friend and correspondent E. G[eorge]. Barber) and rare thus. Laid-in is a letter from Barber's daughter, explaining that her father was a member of The Left Book Club and expressing her regret that Orwell's side of their correspondence was assumed to be lost, probably during a house move, although one letter is known to have survived and is included in the Collected Letters. Sold by Judy Barber to Edinburgh dealer,William Lytle, thence by private collector to Peter Grogan bookseller. [Together with]: "Almanaque de la Revolucià n Española 1937" - an illustrated wall-calendar, presumed published by The Workers' Party of Marxist Unification (Spanish: Partido Obrero de Unificacià n Marxista - P.O.U.M.), with stirring illustrations and bellicose notes for each month. This copy was sent by Orwell to Barber from Barcelona in January 1937 (the exact date of the postmark is illegible and the page for January is absent) and has Barber's address in Woolwich in Orwell's hand on the backing paper with his additional note "IMPRENTA / IMPRIMÉ" - Orwell always counted the pennies - and with a further intriguing note in pencil, possibly in Orwell's hand, possibly Barber's or possibly that of a sympathetic postal worker, upside-down and somewhat stylised to disguise the message: "VIVA EL POUM". From the dustwrapper blurb: "In December 1936, Orwell enlisted in the P.O.U.M. militia and fought on the Aragon front till April, first in a Spanish company, then with the I.L.P. contingent. On leave in Barcelona during the May fighting, he gives an eye-witness account of what really happened. Then he went back to the front, was wounded, declared medically unfit, and returning through Barcelona to England narrowly escaped arrest as a counter-revolutionary!".

ESPAÑA EN EL CORAZON, DEDICATED TO A "FRIEND OF SPAIN AND CHILE" BY NERUDA. 4to; bound conserving the original wrappers; dedication by Pablo Neruda in green ink to the Chilean poet Juan Florit: "to Juan Florit, dear friend of Spain and Chile, Salud! Pablo Neruda, 1970."Second edition of one of the most influential books of Neruda bibliography. The book immediately became one of great literary impact and went on to become an obligatory theme of conversation in all circles, receiving at the same time ample publicity in the press. From the beginning it is an enormous publishing success for its engaging poetry full of love and compassion for the mistreated, and of terrible hatred toward Franquista, especially toward his generals Mola, Sanjurjo, and Franco himself. With this work of tragic accents and ferocious denunciations Neruda surprises those of his followers who were not aware of his recently assumed role of combatant poet, one who abandons all control and composure to shout his condemnations of those whom he judges responsible for the hour of pain, blood, and death that Spain was living. This book makes Neruda convert into a poet who reaches the intellect and sensibility of the people who had to that moment neglected him. The emotional impact in Chile that the events of the Civil War had from its beginning is reinforced by this poetic work of such powerful dramatic force and such direct actuality, that it extends the influence of Nerudian poetry to yet more wide circles than had been achieved by his first work. Nobody can truly remain indifferent in those days to what occurred in Spain and thus the 1st edition of the book went out of print quickly and would be reprinted several times. At the time Neruda is making his last revisions of España en el corazón nobody could know for how long and at what cost of lives the Civil War would last.Dedicated copies of this work are EXTREMELY RARE. 43 pp páginas [Attributes: Soft Cover]
